FREEPORT ART MUSEUM

You may have noticed a new logo appearing on many of the museum’s printed materials arriving in your mailbox. Designed by Marcy Folgate, the logo helps identify the programs associated with the celebration of FAM’s 40th anniversary. So far, the year is off to a great start! The opening of the FAM at 40 exhibition was a great success with a standing room only crowd at Dr. Hartog’s talk (see pg. 4) Next up is the Annual Dinner Gala on October 17th. This year’s gala will be special indeed, with the Ruby Anniversary as the theme, the evening will be filled with music, specially themed cocktails, and a delicious dinner (see pg. 3). Bookending the celebration will be the first Slow Water Arts festival held downtown. This two-day arts festival is organized by FAM and the Freeport Downtown Development Foundation and is part of our continuing effort to be part of the revitalization of our community. More details are on pg. 10. We have several exciting exhibitions and programs planned for the next several months; from the Regional Juried Exhibition to the return of the Artful Living series, there is always something creative to see and do at the Freeport Art Museum!

Backstrap Loom Talk & Demonstration

The FAM at 40 exhibition contains many superior examples of textiles from around the globe and many of them were woven using a backstrap loom, popular in Latin America and Asia. University of Wisconsin graduate student in textile studies, Carolyn Jenkinson, just returned from a visit to Oaxaca, Mexico where she focused on mastering this type of loom and researching the tradition of this weaving method. Attend this very special members only talk and demonstration to further appreciate the textiles of our collection, and maybe even try your hand at using this loom. There is no charge for this event, but please let us know if you plan to [email protected] - 815-235-9755

EXHIBITIONS

The opening reception for the show that kicks off the museum’s 40th anniversary was a huge hit with a standing room only attendance for the talk by Freeport native and collector, Dr. Tom Hartog. Presenting a number of fine examples of textiles from the important Bakwin collection at FAM, Dr. Hartog also provided a very engaging and interesting account about how the collection, containing over 140 Indonesian textiles, found their way to the Freeport Art Museum. The exhibition was coordinated by an exhibition committee including Patricia Johnson (chair), Becky Connors, Nanette Mosher, Carolyn Mastroianni and museum intern, Lauren Hartog. Many of the works included have rarely been on display. Several additions and changes have been made to the Near and Far East gallery as well as the Native American Gallery.

FAM at 40 July 31 - October 31, 2015

The annual Regional Juried Exhibition at the FAM features work by artists living in the tri-state region of Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Created to encourage contemporary art, this show provides an opportunity for established and emerging artists to debut their latest work and it has grown to now attract over 200 submissions in a wide variety of media each year.

The juror for this year’s exhibition will be Dawn Wohlford-Metallo, Visual Arts Director for Quad City Arts in Rock Island, IL. She oversees the art gallery at the Quad City International Airport, as well as a gallery in Rock Island. Additionally, Wohlford-Metallo is a working visual artist with a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture, from the University of Colorado, Boulder.

The annual Aspiring Artists exhibition celebrates the creative talents of youth in our area. Open to all schools in Northwest Illinois, the show invites art teachers from participating schools to select up to 35 pieces representing the most accomplished student work done throughout the year. Awards are given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each age group and a special award category for best use of recycled materials adds an extra fun challenge. Opening in time to launch March as Youth Education in the Arts Month, Aspiring Artists also recognizes the highly skilled professionals working as art educators in our schools.

In celebration of the Freeport Art Museum’s 40th anniversary and in conjunction with the FAM at 40 exhibition, the 2nd floor Contemporary Gallery features the Local Heroes exhibition. This exhibition recognizes seventeen artists from FAM’s permanent collection by acknowledging their contributions as artists from the Freeport area. Most of the selected pieces are by artists who are well known by the community. Other pieces, such as The Gothic Rhino, were selected for their iconic representation of FAM over the past forty years.

The featured artists include: J. Eric Anderson, Merl Blackwood, Richard Boschulte, Theodosia (Park) Breed, Philip Dedrick, Dan Edler, E. Dale Erickson, Florence (Wilkens) Furst Riner, Arthur Geisert, Tom Heflin, Charles F. Johnson, Michael Johnson, Andrew Langoussis, Carolyn Mastroianni, Stella Perkins, Roland Poska, and Duane Smith.

Josh Naujokas joined the art museum staff this summer as an intern in the Youth Employment in the Arts program. This was made possible by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council and matching funds from Hughes Resources and McPherson Law Office. Josh is an Arts Honors student at Freeport High School and enjoys playing piano. His internship included assisting with the summer art camps, providing much needed assistance in preparing materials, helping youth with activities and cleaning the studio classroom. We hope to be able to continue this rewarding program each summer.
