Summers are made for travel--and the mild weather we’ve experienced this summer has certainly made travel even more enjoyable. Recently, I was fortunate enough to be able to take some time to roam around parts of the great American west. This territory was largely new to me and had been on my travel list for many years. From the bright lights and late nights of Las Vegas to the grand vistas of Zion National Park and the awesomeness of the Grand Canyon, the trip reminded me of how much there is to experience traveling within the borders of our United States. Along the way I visited many museums, of course, and enjoyed the benefits of showing my FAM membership card at the admission counters. The Freeport Art Museum has participated in NARM, the North American Reciprocal Museum program in recent years, which allows FAM members who join or renew at the $125 level or above to be treated as members at all the participating museums nationwide. This adds up to great savings on entrance fees, discounts on museum shop merchandise and even discounted tickets to special events and access to member-only events. Plus, I am able to use my card for a guest too. From my estimates, this saved me $70 on this trip alone and the way I was able to impress my travel partner, well that was just priceless.

Earlier this year, there were significant changes to NARM that limited many museums’ ability to maintain their affiliation with the program. However, I am pleased to announce the development of a sister program called ROAM (Reciprocal Organization of Associated Museums). This program replaces NARM and has seen many more well-known organizations across the nation join the roster of participating museums including the Dallas Museum of Art The Norton Museum of Art, Figge Art Museum, Loyola University Museum of Art and the San Diego Museum of Art, just to name a few. So if you have plans to do some traveling in the future, I encourage you to put your FAM membership card to work and enjoy being treated like a VIP at the museums you visit this year. You are now free to ROAM about the country!

FAM’s Mini MasterpiecesApril 27 - October 4, 2013

Organized In conjunction with the Mini Masterpiece fundraiser and exhibition, the Contemporary gallery, located on the second floor, features miniature works of art from the museum’s permanent collections. Miniature art is a genre that has been produced for many centuries and spans several cultures. The nature of their size allowed them to be transported easily with travelers as they began to explore different lands.

Visit the Contemporary Gallery to view miniature paintings and prints, by Hans Sebald Beham, William Blake, Guston Casimir Saint-Pierre, Michael Rothenstein, Philip Dedrick, Merl Blackwood, Richard Boschulte along with snuff bottles, netsuke figures, baskets, ceramics and more.

CONTEMPORARY GALLERYMichael Johnson

November 1 - February 21, 2014

Michael Johnson has been photographing rural America for more than thirty-five years. Known for his large format black and white images, Johnson uses traditional photography techniques on gelatin silver paper produced by view camera negatives. A self-taught artist, he traces his inspiration to the European master painters of the 17th century. However, his vision has been shaped by the land itself, especially by the landscape of the driftless area of Northwestern Illinois.

Michael Johnson’s works have been exhibited throughout the United States, Asia, and Europe. His photographs can be found in both public and private collections including the Freeport Art Museum’s permanent collection. Save the date for the opening reception of this exhibiton on November 15th, 2013.

A Special Fundraising Exhibition

The second presentation of the Mini Masterpieces biennial was a resounding success. Over 60 artists from Freeport, Rockford and surrounding communities contributed close to 150 original miniature works of art for this special exhibition and fundraising event. A new ‘buy-it-now’ option became highly popular and allowed guests at the opening night reception to claim a work before bidding escalated. Combined with a wide selection of art techniques and media to choose from, this exciting atmosphere helped the majority of pieces to sell within a few hours of the exhibition’s opening. The Freeport Art Museum wishes to thank all those who helped make this event such a fun and creative show. Thank you to each and every artist, guest and art purchaser--your participation supports FAM’s educational programming and helps keep the museum free to visit. Missed out this year? The next Mini Masterpiece event will take place in June of 2015--plenty of time to create your own one-of-a-kind miniature work of art!

Prairie Wind LiveSeptember 28 - November 9, 2013

Opening Reception Friday September 27th5-7pm

Prairie Wind Live brings together the visual, literary and performance arts in an exciting collaboration between the Freeport Art Museum and Highland Community College (HCC). For over ten years, HCC has produced an award-winning magazine publication called Prairie Wind, featuring art, poetry, short stories and music selected from the annual District exhibition at the college. This fall, these works will come to life at the Freeport Art Museum through a dynamic exhibition featuring interactive audio and visual recordings. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to listen to selected original music compositions on MP3 devices while viewing the art and a special video installation which will present interviews with the artists.

The opening reception will be a unique chance for visitors to interact with artists, writers and musicians as they present their works live through demonstration, talks and readings. Following the exhibit opening, a series educational programs are scheduled to take place at FAM, HCC and at the Freeport Public Library where visitors can experience the multi-media project through readers theatres of featured poetry and short stories and demonstrations of artistic media and technique throughout the duration of the exhibition. Special guest speaker and former Prairie Wind contributor, Austin Smith, will make a visit to Freeport in October to talk about his newly published book of contemporary poetry titled Almanac, due out in September. Most of the programs are free and open to the public thanks to the support of a grant by the Freeport Community Foundation. Dates, times and locations will be advertised in print, on our website and on our Facebook page. Stay tuned for more details.

The main galleries have been completely transformed by Rockford “street” artists Corey Hagberg and Sarah Danielle Stewart along with photographer, Mike Smith for an exciting new exhibition, Festering Auras. Large spray-painted murals covering the gallery walls surround other multi-media works that support the show’s overall theme of beautification versus decay. Festering Auras deals with the juxtaposition of pleasing and appealing life experiences such as dreams and positive aspects of our society versus these opposites including catastrophe, nightmares and a multitude of societal ills representing the decaying and taboo or undesirable and avoided elements of life. Using spray paint, oil paint and oil enamel partnered with sketched or screen printed backgrounds, Corey Hagberg creates multi-layered paintings that are part street art, part collage and part surrealist self-portrait. Born in suburban Chicago,

Corey was introduced to art at a young age through skateboard graphics and graffiti. Corey eventually landed himself in art classes at McHenry County College, and later Northern Illinois University, where he earned a BFA in 2005 Sarah Danielle Stewart lives for the oddities in life. Inspirations include kitsch and vintage oddities, cartoons, comics, Mod and Rod culture, nature, mechanics, decadence and gluttony. She works most with enamels, oils, acrylic, illustration markers and colored pencils on a wide variety of surfaces. Her experience and work range from hyper-realistic fantasy based fine art, to both realistic and cartoon illustration, to pin-striping and custom hot rod painting. The show is up for only a few short weeks--stop by and see it while you can.

Fiber Art by Kathleen WilkenJune 18 - August 24, 2013

Kathleen Wilken lives and works in Freeport, Illinois. She creates two dimensional works with wool, felt and other fiber materials. Kathy says “I am not a painter but I love to make others think that my work is like a painting with fiber as the medium.” For Kathy, art making is a way of escaping the monotonousness of life and becomes a portal to convey her

thoughts about the complexities of modern day life. Felting is a technique that she has established in her recent work which has transformed into a more abstract and painterly process.

Leather by Linda Hoch AumanAugust 27 - November 9, 2013

Linda Hoch Auman lives and works in Freeport, Illinois. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Art Education from Northern Illinois University and has been interested in art since she was a child. Now retired and creating art in her home studio, Linda previously taught art and was a supervisor of art for several schools and education programs in the Northern Illinois area. Although she works in a variety of media, this series displays her drawings and paintings on leather. She explains “a former student gave me some samples of leather to use in my art work, and I decided to explore the possibilities and began to use what I had.” Linda created these works by drawing and painting directly on each piece of leather.

Paintings by Duane SmithJuly - September 30, 2013

New at the Monroe Clinic in Freeport is a selection of works by Duane Smith. For 35 years, Duane taught elementary and High school art in Freeport, He graduated from Western Illinois University and later received his Masters of Art degree from the University of Iowa. The subject matter of most of his paintings are landscapes found within a few miles of Freeport. Using a loose brush-stroke, some of his works may begin as more realistic compositions but become more abstract in later versions.

Goldenrod by Duane Smith

J. eriC anDersonOur community recently lost a great talent and a bright spirit. This spring, at the age of 91, J. Eric Anderson passed away peacefully in Freeport. Mr. Anderson built his career as an architect by studying at the University of Illinois and then establishing his own architecture firm in Chicago.

Enchanted by the landscape they found in Northwest Illinois, He and his wife Leone (Lee) moved his business to the Stockton area in 1975. Before retiring in 1990 Eric designed numerous banks, churches and homes throughout the region.

Here at the museum, we know him best for his skillful watercolor paintings representing the very landscape he fell in love with many years ago. We are very proud to own two of his works in our permanent collections, of of which is pictured above. Not afraid of the limited palette which the colder months provide, Eric captured the unique characteristics of winter in the Midwest in ways that make us almost nostalgic for snow covered streets.

Beyond his talents as an artist, Eric was also an engaging, and delightful person always ready to promote the appreciation of the arts to future generations. He will be greatly missed. The museum would like to acknowledge the following individuals who gave donations in memory of J. Eric Anderson: Phillip Kniskern Duane and Ruth Smith John and Elizabeth Fye Dan and Bobbie Edler Joe and Carolyn Mastroianni Dean and Ellen Bartels
