Keep Your Shop Front lit Up For security reasons we advise all businesses to turn on their verandah light outside their businesses and also their display window lights when they leave for the day. Thieves like to operate in dark places where they are not easily seen-keeping your lights on helps to deter thieves. Credit Card Fraud A credit card fraud in Onehunga recently is a good reminder for all of us to be vigilant and to be aware of some of the behaviours that fraudsters could demonstrate:

The person not caring about price or warrantees etc

Foreign cards

Asking you to swipe a chipped card rather than insert it into the card reader.

Trying multiple cards if one is declined

Using a card from a pocket rather than a wallet

Wearing disguises – hats, sunglasses etc

Remember to look closely at the card and if suspicious ask for photo ID. And If you fall victim to credit card fraud, phone 111. Counterfeit notes Remember to check notes for the security features below. And also be alert to anyone asking to change a $100 into other notes or purchasing a small item with a $100.

Onehunga Winter Promotion Ends Next Week Final day for entries into promotion is Saturday 31 August Customers have one more week to spend money in your business and go in-the-draw to win a holiday—use this last week to encourage your customers to spend. All purchases made from July 1 to Saturday 31 August are eligible to go in the draw.

We will be collecting all completed entry forms from businesses in the first week of September. If we have not come to collect your entry box by Saturday 7 September, please give us a call on 636 8535 and we will come and collect it. New Members Of The Community Policing Team Valuable skills and knowledge to benefit community

This week we were introduced to two new recruits to the Onehunga Community Policing Team—Andrew and Dwayne. The Onehunga community is in good hands with these two — Andrew grew up in the Onehunga area and attended Onehunga High School so knows a lot of people in the area and Dwayne knows everything there is to know about road policing. Welcome aboard guys, great to have you in the area!

Successful Manukau Harbour Working Bee Great community effort to clean up the area More than seventy people helped to remove some mangroves and pick up rubbish at the Manukau Harbour last weekend. People have been saying how great it is to have the inlet opened up and be able to see it from Mangere Reserve. Kudos to Onehunga Enhancement Society, Manukau Harbour Restoration Society and Mangere Bridge Residents and Ratepayers Association for organising such a successful event!

Please put your bins out ready for Tuesday collection on Monday nights after close of business and remove bins off the footpath and back onto your business property first thing Tuesday morning. Progress Report on Litter Around Onehunga OBA addressing issue with Auckland Council As we mentioned a couple of weeks ago, a number of car parks and streets surrounding the Mall are littered with rubbish — the Countdown and Community Centre carpark, Onehunga Train Station, Bus Station, St Peter’s Church playground, Workingmen’s Club alleyway, RSA alleyway, Brays Rise and Selwyn St, in particular. We made complaints with Auckland Council over a month ago and it was only yesterday that someone from Auckland Transport agreed to meet with us. We expressed concern that our regular street cleaner has had his designated areas reduced significantly so that now the areas mentioned above are no longer being maintained. The representative from Auckland Transport acknowledged that this is not good enough and is working through each of the areas that are problem spots and hopes to get back to us shortly with further information. We will advise you of the outcome as soon as we know.

If you see any rubbish/areas that need cleaning, please let us know — we are doing regular walks around the town centre to identify the rubbish but it is always helpful to have your input.

Heritage Activities Happening In Onehunga Historical walks, Victorian tea, talks and more As we have mentioned previously, we are unable to deliver the Onehunga Heritage Festival this year. However, there will be a range of heritage events going on in September and October that we’d like to highlight. Please keep this information handy so you can advise customers that would like to know more.

buildings in Jellicoe Park, Journey’s End, Laishley house and Blockhouse of the 1850-60 era will be

open for viewing, with displays of Onehunga’s history.

Lecture on Auckland’s caves: Peter Crossley, well-renowned Auckland speleologist will give an

insightful presentation on the Auckland’s lava caves at 7.30pm on Saturday 28 September. Entry by

gold coin donation.
