1.Barney Bean is collecting his and Elsie’s rations. There doesn’t seem to be much for two growing kids to eat. What are rations and why do you think there was so little food?? 2. Barney mentions rotten teeth and swollen gums in this chapter. What causes teeth to rot and gums to become swollen and why did it happen in New South Wales (you might have to do a bit of research)? 3. Barney refers to his “Ma” in Chapter 1. Who and where is his Ma? What hints tell you where his Ma is? 4. There are a lot of new words in this chapter. With the help of a dictionary (real or online), look up “lag”, “pannikin”, “salt pork” and “pickpocket” and write these definitions in your workbook. 5. Who are the “wild Indians” Barney refers to in this chapter?

• Barney feels a great need to protect Elsie. Why do you think he feels so strongly about this? Give as many reasons as you can.

• What is bracken? Find a picture of it online and say why you think it might be useful for making beds like Barney and his ma did.

Look closely at the clip and imagine that you are actually there. What can you see? What can you hear or smell? What can you taste or feel (remember you can write about things that you feel with your emotions, as well as what you can touch)? Record your thoughts on the Five Senses Graphic Organiser worksheet (scroll down). **Don’t just write about one or two things for each column – try to challenge yourself to find as many things as you can for each column!

Decide on a name for your character. Decide on a personality. Create an ‘All About My Character’ poster. Draw a detailed picture of your character and make it the salient (main) image on your poster. Try to get across your character’s personality in your picture. Answer the following questions in the space around your picture:

• How old is your character?

• What is your character’s personality?

• What is your character interested in?

• What is your character afraid of?

• Does your character have a special talent?

• What do others from the camp think or feel about your character?

• Give some other adjectives to describe your character. You may like to use some of the words on the Character adjectives tool at the bottom (scroll down).

Write a list of some problems that one of the children in this video might have. For example:

• A fierce storm comes while you are stuck up a tree

• Your aunty warns you not to go beyond a certain place, but you and your cousins disobey her. What problems arise?

• You have lost a special stone that you believed brought good luck

• You suddenly turned invisible!

Mathematics: Patterns Turn in task Patterns where a rule is applied are sometimes called function patterns. You might have seen a function machine like this before?

Mathematics: Patterns Look around you, can you see a pattern? A pattern is an arrangement of shapes, numbers or objects formed according to a rule. Patterns are everywhere, you can find them in nature, art, music and even in dance! In this topic, we are looking at number patterns. A number pattern is a sequence or list of numbers that is formed according to a rule. Number patterns can use any of the four operations (+, –, ×, ÷) or even a combination. In the example below, if we follow this instruction:

Mathematics: Patterns Today we will be looking at a similar function patterns as yesterday but this time the rule involves multiplication. Look at the table below as an example of a function pattern that uses multiplication.

Mathematics: Volume & Capacity Find 6 things in your household that are measured in millilitres and litres. Investigate the items you have listed.

• What were the items measured in?

• What is the biggest measurement?

• Where do you find the measurement on each item?

Mathematics: Volume & Capacity Today, we are creating a magic potion. Will you be a nice witch/wizard or an evil one? Brainstorm on a piece of paper what type of potion you will create. For example, an invisibility potion, truth potion, flying potion, strength potion….. The potion you create will need to be 600 millilitres. If it is under or over it will explode! You can use 6 ingredients (not real ones, only pretend) in your potion. ONLY 6! What are some ingredients you might use?

There are many function patterns in real life. For example: At their Christmas fair, Middle Street Primary School charges $1.50 for a gift wrapping service. The table below shows the total cost of each wrapped gift and shows the function rule that has been applied to change the total cost of each gift. i.e. a gift at ($7) + gift wrapping ($1.50)=Cost altogether ($8.50)

A bakery makes 10 cupcakes in one hour. Therefore the rule is: Number of hours x 10 = number of cupcakes. Question: How many cupcakes will the bakery make in one day? Now this table only goes up to 8hrs but we can use the rule to help us find the answer.

Now, go to your kitchen and search for a measuring jug or an empty container with a measurement on it and a smaller container with no measurement on it. For example: In my kitchen I found a 1litre jug and a plastic cup. Using your two containers (one big and one small), investigate how many cups of water will fill the 1litre jug (or whatever measurements you are working with). In my example, I discovered that it took 10 plastic cups of water to fill my 1L jug. How could I use this activity to work out the measurement of the container with no measurement? If possible, take a picture of this and upload it for your teacher.

Examples: blood, unicorn hair, frog’s skins, toe nails etc… How many millilitres might each ingredient be if our potion is to be 600 millilitres? You must not have any ingredient equalling 100 millilitres. If they do their potion will not work and will explode. Challenge yourself to think of other numbers that you could use to reach 600mls. Using the Magic Potion worksheet below, record the recipe for your potion.

Project- Based Learning We will focus on this in our Zoom on Wednesday Today’s lesson is important because you will need to do some research, make notes and be prepared to work in groups of 4 in next week’s Zoom. Jog to 2nd cone and do 2 burpees, jog backwards to start. Jog to 3rd cone and do 3 burpees, jog backwards to start. Jog to 4th cone and do 4 burpees, jog backwards to start. Jog to 5th cone and do 5 burpees, sprint back to the start. Rest for 2 minutes. Repeat this as many times as you can in 30 minutes. How many times can you do it? To really test yourself complete this activity in the soft sand on the beach.

Now act out a scene in your castle, fort or palace.
