SONSHINE NEWS
Beloved Family,
The arrival of September and Oc-
tober always feels like a fresh begin-
ning to me. Students have returned to
school, college football is back, and
the coming of fall is forecasted by
cool crispness in the mornings. Simi-
larly, this time of year marks the kick off of some new things
in FBCD’s Sunday School ministry.
FBCD moves into the fall quarter of Sunday School with
five new teachers. These individuals have felt, and the
church has affirmed, God’s calling to lead one of three new
classes or to provide a much needed respite for other teach-
ers. Judie Jackson and Marjorie Miller will now teach 1st-2nd
Grades and 3rd-5th Grades, respectively. Tiffany Craun will
lead a new class for kindergarteners, allowing our church to
better minister to these children in light of their distinct de-
velopmental needs. Becky Lynn will facilitate a new class
specially designed to minister to couples with young chil-
dren as well as those without children and single young
adults. Finally, as a result of capacity attendance in FBCD’s
senior adult class, Larry Jackson will be leading a new class
designed to minister to retired adults.
“...All the peoples on earth will be blessed
through you.” - Genesis 12:3(HCSB)
FBCD’s Participation in the Promise In our worship services over the past several weeks,
we’ve been looking at the covenant that Yahweh made with
Abram/Abraham (cf. Genesis 12:1-3 and following), and
focusing specifically on the promise that God would bless all
the peoples of the earth through Abraham. We’ve looked
ahead to the “rest of the story” as we’ve seen that this prom-
ise of blessing will find its fulfillment in the salvation that is
available through the Lord Jesus Christ, a descendent of
Abraham. Ultimately, Revelation 7:9-10 reveals the final
result of God’s promise to Abraham as the Apostle John sees
a heavenly vision of “a vast multitude from every nation,
tribe, people, and language, standing before the throne and
before the Lamb.... And they cried out in a loud voice: Sal-
vation belongs to our God, who is seated on the throne, and
to the Lamb!”
It is important that you know that our church is actively
participating in this promise to carry salvation throughout
the world. The first way we do this is through regular contri-
butions to the Cooperative Program of the Southern Baptist
Convention (CP). Of every undesignated dollar given to our
church, we have committed to give 10% of that to the CP,
where it is used by various Southern Baptist agencies to fund
missions efforts, from here in Butler County to the farthest
reaches of our planet. Friends, through the end of August, we
have joined together to give $10,529.13 through the CP to
help other people become part of that vast multitude standing
before the heavenly throne!
In addition to the regular contributions our church makes
in support of missions, we also occasionally have special
emphases on certain missions areas. You may be familiar
with these as the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering (for Inter-
national missions), the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering (for
North American missions), and the Viola Webb Missions
Offering (for Kansas/Nebraska and local association mis-
sions). In each of these special missions offerings, 100% of
the funds given go to reach people for Christ in the given
geographical areas. As you’ll note on page 2, we are current-
ly emphasizing the Viola Webb Missions Offering, of which
50% of what is given goes to our state convention to fund
missions work in Kansas/Nebraska generally, and 50% goes
to our local South Central Association for mission work here
in Butler, Cowley, Sumner, and Harper counties.
Our church can be justifiably pleased with our financial
contributions toward the fulfillment of God’s promise that
all people on earth will be blessed by an understanding of
salvation through Jesus Christ. Over 22% of our church’s
receipts have gone toward support of missions. However, I
eagerly look forward to the day when we join our financial
contributions with personal, face-to-face involvement in mis-
sions activities. Later in October I’ll be attending a confer-
ence in Texas that should help me understand how we might
begin to lay a foundation for such involvement in interna-
tional missions. I pray that each of us would begin, if you
haven’t been already, praying fervently
about how God might use us, individual-
ly and corporately, to personally carry the
Gospel of salvation to our neighbors in
Douglass, throughout Kansas, the United
States, and to the Ends of the Earth.
Agape,
Pastor Voyt Lynn
As Jesus instructed in Matthew 9:38, First Baptist Church of Douglass has prayed
“to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers,” and God’s people have responded.
As the fourth quarter of 2011 begins on September 4, qualified workers will be fill-
ing the teaching positions in all Bible study classes of the Sunday School at FBCD.
The youngest class is babies through two years of age! Brooke McClintock and
other nursery volunteers teach these little ones about the love of Jesus through nur-
ture, pictures, stories, and activities, all building a positive and happy church experi-
ence. Janice Spencer nurtures the biblical exploration of pre-school children, ages 3-5.
We welcome Tiffany Craun as the God-called, new kindergarten teacher for whom
FBCD has been praying! First and second graders have a class with Judie Jackson, a fa-
miliar and caring presence in the children’s department. Marjorie Miller brings years of
passion and experience to the class of third, fourth and fifth grades. Middle and high
school students are challenged in the exploration of their faith by Janey Mahlandt and
Amanda Baughman.
The adult Sunday School department has added two new
teachers. Becky Lynn, an experienced teacher with a seminary
degree, will be teaching a class designed to minister to 20 and 30-something individuals and
couples. Larry Jackson will be teaching a new class for retired adults, birthed as a result of
the growth of Walt Sloan’s excellent class! These are great opportunities to resume or begin
attending Sunday School and be a part of a new class. Teachers continuing to minister by
leading adult classes are Barbara Lahar, Lois Cox, and Walter Sloan.
Sunday School begins at 9:30 a.m. There is a place waiting for everyone!
COMING IN OCTOBER: ANNUAL MEETING OF THE SCASB - MONDAY, OCTOBER 3.
The 64th Annual Meeting of the South Central Association of Southern Baptists will be Monday,
October 3, at FBCD. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend; however, only those elected to
serve as messengers may vote. Dinner will be served at 5:15 p.m. followed by pre-session music by
FBCD musicians. The Annual Meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. There is no charge for meals or child-
care, although donations will be accepted. Reservations should be made by September 26.
