OPENING THE DOORS TO SUCCESS2017 Annual Report

a p u b l i c a t i o n o f t h e

Kathy L. Hall, CFRE Executive Director Kirkwood Foundation

Dear Friends,

In today’s economy, a postsecondary credential is the key to a better job and higher wages. Institutions like Kirkwood Community College open the door to success for many individuals who seek to build a better life by attaining an educational degree or certificate.

In the 2016-2017 academic year, Kirkwood awarded credentials to 2,119 graduates. They represent 66 Iowa counties, 20 states and 30 countries. Student graduation, retention and transfer rates have increased for each of the last eight years at Kirkwood, leading to greater student success that benefits the eastern Iowa corridor.

But even an affordable college like Kirkwood is out of reach for some. The reasons for this are many, including competing priorities outside of school and the lack of adequate financial resources. Recent cuts to higher education spending along with insufficient financial aid only adds to the problem.

The Kirkwood Foundation helps open the door to success by providing scholarships that bridge the gap between the cost of college and our students’ resources. Thanks to the support of alumni and friends like you, last year the Foundation provided $2,864,783 in scholarships to 1,428 students, giving them the opportunities they need to learn and grow. Additionally, the Foundation provided $364,032 in program support and $67,906 of in-kind support, enabling Kirkwood to maintain its tradition of excellence in the classroom.

This Annual Report is in recognition of your generosity, which makes this possible. Thank you for helping Kirkwood students open the door to success for the rest of their lives.

Sincerely,

Dr. Mick StarcevichPresidentKirkwood Community College

2016–2017 HIGHLIGHTSDuring fiscal year 2017, the Foundation awarded $2,864,783 in scholarships from 324 internal scholarship funds to 1,428 students. Nearly $3.1 million is budgeted to be awarded in fiscal year 2018.

From July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2017, the total assets of the Kirkwood Foundation grew from $18 million to $32.6 million. During that same ten-year period, the Kirkwood Foundation awarded $21,158,288 in institutional scholarships to Kirkwood students.

The annual Samuel J. Kirkwood Society dinner recognizing donors who have made endowed and planned gifts was held on October 26, 2016. In honor of Kirkwood’s 50th birthday celebration, the Legacy awards were posthumously given to B.A. Jensen, founding Trustee Chair, and Ira Larson, the author of the 1965 enabling legislation for Iowa’s community college system. The Legacy Award is Kirkwood’s highest honor and it is given to individuals who exemplify leadership and involvement in philanthropy.

On March 7, 2017, Dr. Elizabeth Stone, University of Iowa associate professor and founder of the Stone Research Group in the Department of Chemistry, presented “The Air We Breathe: Air Quality in Eastern Iowa” at the annual Oliven Lecture. This lecture was founded in 1977 in memory of Mel Oliven, long- time Astronomy and Physics Professor at Kirkwood. It is made possible by the Oliven Endowment of the Kirkwood Foundation.

The following 2016-2017 Endowed Faculty Chair recipients were honored at a program on April 12, 2017: Roy Pettibone, “Addressing the Gap in Critical Thinking Skills between the Graduate and Employer,” supported by the Henry B. and Patricia B. Tippie Endowed Chair; Dr. Scott Samuelson, “Seven Ways of Looking at Pointless Suffering;” D.J. Hennager, “Creating a Spatially Organized Open Education Resource Textbook in Human Anatomy and Physiology;” Joe Greathouse, “Creation of a Searchable Database for ACE Activities;” Carolyn Stephenson, “The Influence of Self-Regulation Skills on Self-Efficacy;” Sondra Gates, “College Students Writing About Abuse;” supported by the Kirkwood Endowed Chairs. This program was established to honor President Emeritus Norm Nielsen upon his retirement in 2005.

Kirkwood Alumni & Friends presented the sixth annual Celebration of Success on April 7, 2017, recognizing distinguished alumni, business partners and leaders in higher education. Honorees included: Sharon Cummins, Ryan Lebeda, Mike Sanden, and Fred Timko, Distinguished Alumni; West Music, President’s Award; and Jim Zach, Trustees’ Award.

On May 11, 2017, Kirkwood Community College dedicated the Tippie Business Education Center at Nielsen Hall in a ceremony on Kirkwood’s main campus. The center was named in recognition of a $1.1 million gift made to the college by Iowa native, businessman and philanthropist Henry B. Tippie. The latest chapter in a 25-year history of giving to the college, the donation will be added to the Henry B. and Patricia B. Tippie Business Scholarships Endowment, which was established in 2012 with a $1 million gift. The annual President’s Circle reception recognizing annual donors of $1,000 or more was held in conjunction with this event.

Life took Jerry in a direction that did not include graduating from high school or college right away. Early responsibilities of fatherhood and providing for his family took precedence over his own education. Yet, one of the biggest milestones in his life has been earning his high school equivalency diploma and enrolling in college classes at Kirkwood. Jerry’s journey to Kirkwood wasn’t an easy one. Living in poverty, dealing with homelessness and constantly being burdened with the economic challenges of Chicago street life were realities that consumed his early adult life. He worked several jobs, barely making a living wage, and realized this was not the kind of life he wanted. Raised by a single mother of four, who put herself through school earning her associate, bachelor’s and two master’s degrees, Jerry knew it was time to follow his mother’s example. An above average student all throughout grade school, he knew he had the intelligence and was simply not reaching his full potential. Moving from Chicago to Cedar Rapids in his early 30s, Jerry started working on his high school equivalency diploma at Kirkwood. He worked harder than ever that year, and will never forget the rush of excitement and sensation of true accomplishment as he walked across the stage to receive his high school diploma. It truly was a shining milestone for him. With the motivation to keep going, he enrolled as a college student at Kirkwood and began working toward his next goal of obtaining his Associate of Science degree. However, despite his strong motivation to keep going, financial challenges set in once again. As

a thirty-two-year old father of three, the funds necessary to continue his education stretched an already tight budget. Help came when Jerry was awarded the Rockwell Collins STEM Scholarship. Receiving this scholarship allowed him to continue classes while providing for his family. The scholarship also meant more than just funds to him. It meant that someone cared enough to invest in his education, which increased his likelihood of success. “When I enrolled in classes to start my associate’s degree, I literally had tears of joy in my eyes because I had not foreseen

being here today,” said Jerry. “I will always remember this opportunity given to me … to transform my dream into a reality.” Attending college as an adult came with both rewards and challenges for Jerry. At Kirkwood, he’s on the Dean’s list, involved in LSAMP IINSPIRE

and a member of the STEM Club. He is respected by his peers and his instructors care deeply about him reaching his full potential. Outside of the classroom he balances a part-time job, family time, household chores and many late-night study sessions. Though his life may be chaotic at times, he’s in a good place right now and wouldn’t change a thing. Kirkwood has proven invaluable to Jerry to further his education. By focusing on one day at a time, he knows he’ll accomplish all of his goals, and one day hopes to become the inspiration and rock to his children that his mother was to him.

“This scholarship has

given me more than hope.

Doors are starting to open

that I thought were closed

a long time ago.”

For Kirkwood alum Denise Kassis, attending college in her hometown of Cedar Rapids felt like the right decision. Unsure about choosing a major, Kirkwood seemed like the logical fit and the right place to complete a Liberal Arts degree while figuring out her interests. Affordable tuition and the number of opportunities available also helped seal the deal. Denise graduated in May 2017 with an Associate of Arts degree and still holds ties to Kirkwood as a member of the Alumni Leadership Council. Denise describes herself as an active, social and studious student. She did not waste any time getting involved at Kirkwood and truly believes that helped her connect more with the faculty and staff. Being engaged in campus life also opened the door for more opportunities and helped her form several strong friendships. Denise was a Student Ambassador, a member of the Student Leadership Council, a peer leader for orientation, a leadership member of Dance Marathon and the sports editor for Kirkwood’s student newspaper, Communiqué. Now a junior at the University of Northern Iowa majoring in communications with a journalism minor, Denise credits the opportunities she took advantage of at Kirkwood for her easy transition to UNI. Currently she is on both the Family Relations and Community Relations committees for Dance Marathon, part of the Northern Iowa Wishmakers, an Ethnic Student Promoter, a staff member of Cedar

River Productions, UNI’s student-run production company, president of Circle K Club, and a member of Alpha Xi Delta. In addition, she has a position working at the UNI-Dome. “Don’t worry,” laughs Denise. “I’m a serious student, too. I value my studies and education.” In fact, if it weren’t for all the resources available at Kirkwood, she claims she would not be as successful as she is academically. Resources from the Writing

Center, Tutoring Services, her professors, and her academic advisors all helped her succeed. “Kirkwood has a great support system,” commented Denise. “I was never afraid to ask for help.” After graduating from UNI, Denise hopes to find a job in sports journalism

or broadcasting. She would also love to travel the world and gain a new knowledge for different cultures, and continue to learn and grow as a person. She wants to be successful in her career and build on all of the skills she has learned. “Get out of your comfort zone and try something new! Join clubs, meet new people, go to school events and take advantage of the many opportunities Kirkwood has to offer. I guarantee you won’t regret any of it,” said Denise.

“I chose Kirkwood because of the affordable

tuition and the great opportunities that they

had to offer.”

COUNCIL

2017 CELEBRATION OF SUCCESS RECIPIENTS

Founded in 1941 by Pearl West, West Music has grown to international prominence supplying instruments and expertise to music programs at all levels throughout the U.S. Now in its third generation as a family-run company, West Music is a key supporter to Kirkwood’s music programs as well as an enthusiastic booster of the Kirkwood Foundation. Steve West has been a tireless volunteer and leader in Foundation campaigns and initiatives since 1980, making him our longest-serving Foundation board member. In 2006, West Music established an endowed Kirkwood scholarship for students beginning their studies at Kirkwood, then transferring to the University of Iowa or University of Northern Iowa, pursuing degrees in music education. West Music has also generously supported Kirkwood’s piano practice studios on the main campus for many years.

Kirkwood Agricultural Science Professor and Coordinator Jim Zach has been a literal “driving force” in the college’s Diesel Agriculture Technology program for nearly 40 years. His colleagues and students alike credit both his deep and extensive knowledge of the tools and methods to keep agriculture diesel equipment in good working order, plus his friendly and open demeanor that builds and enriches relationships in the farm implement and heavy machinery industries. Since his arrival at Kirkwood in 1978, Jim Zach’s positive influence continues to start careers and keep professional ties strong throughout Iowa and the nation.

TRUSTEES’ AWARD

Kirkwood President Mick Starcevich (left) with the 2017 Celebration of Success Honorees: Steve West (West Music), Mike

Sanden, Sharon Cummins, Fred Timko, Ryan Lebeda and Jim Zach.

Mike Sanden brought his innate mechanical skills and a deep work ethic to Kirkwood Community College in the 1980s, where he earned a degree in Automotive Technology. He quickly put those skills and knowledge to work as an employee at Webb’s Transmission on the south side of Cedar Rapids. Over the next several years he helped the shop grow an increasingly loyal and enthusiastic clientele. When the owner of Webb’s chose to retire in 1992, Mike decided to purchase the business. The next quarter century has seen a continued growth and strengthening of business, including an expansion of Webb’s Transmission facilities and services. Among Mike’s many customers are Kirkwood faculty, staff and students—and The Hotel at Kirkwood Center. Mike is the service provider for the Hotel’s guest services vehicles. Mike Sanden is a positive role model for a new generation of Kirkwood Automotive Technology students and a living example of the success that honest business dealings and hard work can accomplish.

Fred Timko came to Kirkwood in the early 1970s to study Architectural Drafting. For nearly 40 years, he has been a key figure in building and development in the Cedar Rapids area. He was founder and president of Point Builders, leading many influential construction and development projects in Linn County and the region. He has developed and owned more than 30 properties and industrial park zones in Marion, Hiawatha and Cedar Falls, Iowa. In recent years, he has launched a new company, Down to Earth Development. One key current project is the renovation and expansion of the Kingston Village neighborhood along the west side of the Cedar River. Fred is also well-known for his civic involvement, serving on the boards of Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust and Tanager Place, among others.

Following a tour of duty in the U.S. Navy, Ryan Lebeda came to Kirkwood as one of the college’s many student-veterans. He decided to study Construction Management and impressed his instructors with his natural abilities, world-aware knowledge and drive to succeed. Ryan was recommended to a project management internship with Knutson Construction during the company’s major renovation of Linn Hall on Kirkwood’s main campus. His exemplary classwork and job experience earned him the Kirkwood Outstanding Student award in 2013. His work with Knutson earned him a full-time job offer just before his graduation. Since that time, Ryan has worked on major Knutson projects, including the new University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.

When Sharon Cummins earned her General Secretarial diploma from Kirkwood in the 1970s, she took those beginning skills to a series of rising roles in leading and managing public event spaces for VenuWorks on behalf of the City of Cedar Rapids. For more than 25 years Sharon took on increasing responsibilities in public facilities management, culminating in her role as executive director of the Cedar Rapids public venues: The U.S. Cellular Center, Cedar Rapids Ice Arena, Paramount Theater and the McGrath Outdoor Amphitheater. Her strong organization and leadership talents also led her to a key role as national director of planning and development for the facilities’ national management company, VenuWorks. Sharon Cummins led the 2003-2004 campaign to revive and renovate the Paramount Theater, a $7.8 million renewal effort. She is widely praised and admired for her energetic and positive “can-do” attitude and approach to her work.

Don and Miriam BergmanTee off a l asT ing legacy

The youngest of seven children born to first-generation Swedish immigrants, Don Bergman lived a life rich in accomplishments. Over the course of his 80-year lifetime, he became a star athlete, lettering in football, basketball and baseball during college; a professional golfer who qualified to play in four U.S. Opens; a U.S. Navy veteran during the Korean War; a dedicated and well-respected teacher, coach and guidance counselor; a beloved father to four sons; and a loving husband to his college sweetheart, Miriam, for 58 years. Don’s teaching and coaching career took off as soon as he graduated from Simpson College in 1955. He moved his growing family to New Sharon, then Belle Plaine, and finally settled them in Cedar Rapids. He dedicated his entire career to mentoring young people as an educator, guidance counselor and coach. While he had great devotion to education, coaching was his true excitement and golf his true passion. During his time as an educator, Don became a strong advocate for Kirkwood. He believed the community college was a great next step after high school. Kirkwood offered options for students interested in furthering their education, as well as options for those wanting to obtain the necessary education and training to enter the workforce. Making education affordable was important to Don, so to honor his memory, Miriam established a scholarship

for students with financial need. The Donald and Miriam Bergman Endowed Scholarship gives special preference to veterans pursuing a Kirkwood education, as well as preference to students enrolled in education career courses. In recognition of this most generous gift to student scholarships, Kirkwood’s new Donald J. Bergman Golf and Recreation Complex was dedicated in Don’s name last September. This beautiful legacy pays tribute to his support of education and sports at Kirkwood Community College. The complex, once complete, will include a two-hole golf course, a one-mile fitness and interpretive trail, and two intramural fields for flag football, soccer and ultimate Frisbee. Adding to the student experience, the complex will also serve as a hands-on laboratory for turf grass management students. Expanded recreational offerings are planned for the future, allowing students even more educational opportunities and options to stay active. To memorialize Don’s legacy, and because of Miriam’s generosity, the doors of success will open for other students at Kirkwood for many years to come.

“Don depended on scholarships to get

through school. He believed in Kirkwood and students getting a strong, solid education. I know Don would have been proud to pass that on.”
