Theycontain important information on itssafety, use and maintenance.Keep these instructions in a safeplace and ensure that new users arefamiliar with the content. Pass themon to any future owner of themachine.

Correct usageOnly use the washing machine towash items which are specified by

the manufacturer to be machine-wash-able on the wash-care label, and tex-tiles composed of hand-washable woolor wool blend fabrics as well as satin, lace, silk and other hand-washablegarments.Any other applications may be danger-ous. The manufacturer is not liable fordamage resulting from improper use oroperation.

Technical safetyBefore setting up the machine, check it for any externally visible

damage. Do not install and use adamaged machine.

Before connecting the machine, ensure that the connection data on

the data plate match the mainselectricity supply. If in any doubt, consult a qualified electrician.

The electrical safety of thismachine can only be guaranteed

when continuity is complete betweenthe machine and an effective earthingsystem which complies with local andnational regulations. It is most importantthat this basic safety requirement ispresent and regularly tested and wherethere is any doubt the household wiringsystem should be inspected by aqualified electrician. The manufacturer cannot be held liablefor the consequences of an inadequateearthing system (e.g. electric shock).

Do not connect the machine to themains electricity supply by an

extension lead. Extension leads do notguarantee the required safety of themachine (e.g. danger of overheating).

The machine is built in accordancewith current safety requirements.

Unauthorised repairs could result inunforeseen dangers for the user, forwhich the manufacturer cannot acceptliability. Repairs should only beundertaken by a Miele approvedtechnician.Ensure current is not supplied to themachine until after maintenance orrepair work has been carried out.

The machine is only completelyisolated from the electricity supply

when:– it is switched off at the wall socket

ships, caravans, aircraft etc. if a riskassessment of the installation has beencarried out by a suitably qualifiedengineer.

Do not install your washingmachine in rooms where

temperatures below freezing mayoccur. Frozen hoses may burst or split. The reliability of the electronic controlunit may be impaired at temperaturesbelow freezing point.

Before using the machine for thefirst time, check that the transit

fittings at the rear of the machine havebeen removed (see section on"Installation"). During spinning, a transitfitting which is still in place may result indamage to both the machine andadjacent furniture or appliances.

Turn off the stopcock if themachine is to be left for any length

of time (e.g. holiday), especially if thereis no floor drain (gully) in the immediatevicinity.

Flooding dangerIf hooking the drain hose into a

wash basin, check that the water candrain off quickly enough to prevent thesink from overflowing.Make sure the drain hose is secure, sothat the force of the water flowing out ofthe hose does not dislodge it.

  • Before using the machine for the firsttime ensure that it is correctlyinstalled and connected. See"Installation and connection". Alsocheck that the drain filter is securelytightened. Otherwise there is a riskof water leakage during use.

For safety reasons spinning is notpossible until the machine has beenprepared for using for the first time. Toactivate the spinning function you mustrun a wash programme without laundryand without detergent.

Using detergent could result in anexcessive build-up of foam.

This also activates the ball valve. Theball valve prevents detergent escapingfrom the suds container into the sumpduring a wash programme, thus makingmaximum use of the detergent.

    ^ Open the stopcock.

^ Press the I-On/0-Off button in.

^ Turn the programme selector toCottons 60°C.

  • Energy and water consumption

    – Water consumption and energyusage are determined by the size ofthe load.To make the most out of yourmachine, load the maximum dry loadfor the programme you are using.

    – Use the Automatic and Expressprogrammes for small loads.

    – When smaller amounts of laundry arewashed using the Cottonsprogrammes, the automatic loadrecognition system will reduce theamount of water, time and energyused. This may mean that the timeleft shown in the display is adjustedduring the course of the washprogramme.

    – Using the Cottons 60°C programmeinstead of the Cottons 95°Cprogramme will give energy savingsof between 35% and 45%. This issufficient for most levels of soiling. For stubborn or old stains, use theSoak option.

    – Use the additional option Soakinstead of Pre-wash. If Soak isfollowed immediately by a mainwash, the same suds are used.

    Detergent

    – Do not exceed the amounts ofdetergent recommended by themanufacturer on the packaging.

    – Reduce the amount of detergent withsmaller loads (approx. 1/3 less thanthe amount recommended can beused when washing a half load).

    Additional options(Short, Soak, Pre-wash)

    Select:

    – A wash programme together with theShort option for light to normal soilingwhere there are no obvious marks.

    – A wash programme without anyadditional options for normal toheavy soiling with visible staining.

    – A wash programme together with theSoak option for heavily soiledlaundry.

    – The Pre-wash additional option forlaundry with large amounts of dirt(e.g. dust, sand).

When drying with a tumble dryer

    – Selecting the highest possible spinspeed for the wash programme willsave energy when drying in a tumbledryer afterwards.

  • HAdd detergent

It is important to dispense the correctamount, because . . .

. . . too little detergent results in:

    – Laundry not getting properly cleanand and in time becoming grey andhard to the touch.

    – Greasy particles clinging to thelaundry.

    – Limescale deposits on the heaterelements.

    . . . too much results in:

    – Excessive foam which causes a lowlevel of agitation and poor wash, rinse and spin results.

    – Higher water consumption (anadditional rinse cycle willautomatically switch in).

    – A burden to the environment.

^ Pull out the detergent drawer andplace detergent in the compartmentsas follows:

    i

Detergent for Pre-wash (if selectingPre-wash, add 1/4 of the total amountrecommended). This compartment isalso used for starch formulationswhen starching separately.

  • The correct detergentAll modern detergents produced for automatic washing machines are suitable.Use dispensing aids, e.g. balls, if these are supplied with the detergent. Tabletsare suitable for full loads but note that it may be impractical to reduce tablets forsmaller loads. Some tablets do not dissolve as rapidly as others and may not besuitable for programmes with short durations.

Do not use biological detergents on silk as the enzymes may damage the silk!Instructions for use and recommended amounts for a full load are given on thedetergent packaging.

Liquid detergent should be dispensed using a ball provided by the manufacturerfor programmes without a pre-wash.

For programmes with a pre-wash you will need to purchase a special containerfrom the Miele Spare Parts department which sits in the main wash compartmentj of the detergent dispenser drawer. Add liquid detergent to this container forthe main wash and to compartment i for the pre-wash.

  • Installation surfaceA concrete floor is the most suitableinstallation surface for a washingmachine, being far less prone tovibration during the spin cycle thanwooden floorboards or a carpetedsurface.

    Please note the following points:

^ The machine must be level andsecurely positioned.

^ To avoid vibrations during spinning, the machine should not be installedon soft floor coverings.

If installing on a wooden joist floor:

^ We recommend a plywood base(at least 59x52x3 cm). The baseshould span several joists and bebolted to the joists and not only to thefloorboards. Check for the presenceof pipes and cables.

If possible, install the machine in acorner, as this is usually the most stablepart of the floor.

,If the machine is installed on araised plinth, it has to be securedagainst slippage during spinningusing retaining clips (available fromthe Miele Spare Parts Dept).

Installing the washing machineTo manoeuvre the machine out of itspacking case to its installation site holdit by the edge of the lid where itprotrudes to the rear of the washingmachine as well as by the handlerecesses at the front.

Do not lift the machine by the drumdoor.

  • The Miele Waterproof systemThe Miele Waterproof system protectsthe washing machine from waterdamage.

The system consists of three maincomponents:

    1) the inlet hose

    2) the electronic unit and the washingmachine housing

    3) the drain hose

    1) Inlet hose

    – The inlet hose is fitted with anadditional electrical safety valvewhich works like an automaticstopcock and is housed in the inlethose connection box.

    – It is pressure tested to between7,000 and 10,000 kPa.

    – The inlet hose has a protectivesleeve.

Any leaking water from the inlet hoseis fed into the sump through thisprotective sleeve. A float switches offthe safety valve, preventing any morewater from flowing into the machineand water in the suds container ispumped away.

    2) Electronic unit and washingmachine housing

    – Sump

Any leaking water is collected in asump in the base of the machine. Afloat switches off the safety valves, preventing any more water fromflowing into the machine and water inthe suds container is pumped away.

    – Overflow protection

This prevents the washing machinetaking in too much water. If the waterlevel exceeds a certain level, thedrain pump switches in and pumpsthe excess water away.

    3) Drain hose

The drain hose is protected by aventilation system which prevents thewashing machine from beingemptied completely.

    Do not get wet.

The protective sleeve of the hosemust not be damaged or kinked.

The machine should be connected tothe mains water supply in accordancewith local and national safetyregulations. The German authorities donot require it to have a non-return valveas the washing machine has beendesigned to comply with DINregulations.

The machine is designed to operatewith a flow pressure of between 100and 1,000 kPa (1-10 bar). If it is higherthan 1,000 kPa it is essential to fit apressure reducing valve.

Connection to the mains water supplyshould incorporate a mains stopcockwith 3/4" thread. The stopcock shouldbe fitted by a qualified plumber.

,The connection point is subjectto mains water pressure. Turn on thestopcock slowly and check for leaks.Correct the position of the washerand union if appropriate.
