1 Safety

1.1 Action-related warnings

1.2 General safetyinformation

1.2.1 Danger caused byimproper operation

Improper operation may presenta danger to you and others, andcause material damage.▶ Carefully read the enclosed

instructions and all other ap-plicable documents, particu-

larly the "Safety" section andthe warnings.

1.2.2 Risk of death dueto explosions andscaldings from brinefluid

The brine fluid ethylene andpropylene glycol is extremelyflammable, both as liquid andsteam. A potentially explosivecombination of steam/air mayform.▶ Keep away from heat, sparks,

naked flames and hot sur-faces.

▶ Prevent steam/air mixturesfrom forming. Keep brine fluidvessels closed.

▶ Observe the safety data sheetthat accompanies the brinefluid.

1.2.3 Danger due to improperuse

There is a risk of injury or deathto the user or others, or of dam-age to the product and otherproperty in the event of im-proper use or use for which itis not intended.Only use the product in accord-ance with the provisions.

1.2.4 Preventing the risk ofinjury from corrosivebrine fluid

The brine fluid ethylene glycol isharmful to health.▶ Avoid contact with the skin

and eyes.▶ Always wear gloves and pro-

tective goggles.▶ Do not inhale or swallow.▶ Observe the safety data sheet

that accompanies the brinefluid.

1.2.5 Preventing the risk ofinjury due to scaldingfrom hot and coldcomponents

Particularly in the coolant cir-cuit, the components of the heatpump can reach high temperat-ures or extremely low temperat-ures.▶ Do not touch any uninsulated

pipelines in any part of theheating installation.

▶ Do not remove any casingsections.

1.2.6 Risk of being scalded byhot drinking water

There is a risk of scalding atthe hot water draw-off pointsif the hot water temperaturesare greater than 50 °C. Youngchildren and elderly persons are

particularly at risk, even at lowertemperatures.▶ Select the temperature so

that nobody is at risk.

1.2.7 Risk of death due to lackof safety devices

A lack of safety devices (e.g.expansion relief valve, expan-sion vessel) can lead to poten-tially fatal scalding and otherinjuries, e.g. due to explosions.▶ Have your competent person

check that all required isolatordevices are present in yourheating installation.

1.2.8 Preventing the risk ofinjury from freezingas a result of touchingcoolant

The product is delivered withan operational filling of R410Acoolant. This is a chlorine-freecoolant which does not affectthe Earth's ozone layer. R410Ais neither a fire hazard nor anexplosion risk. Escaping coolantmay cause freezing if the exitpoint is touched.▶ If coolant escapes, do not

touch any components of theproduct.

▶ Do not inhale any steam orgases that escape from thecoolant circuit as a result ofleaks.

▶ Avoid skin or eye contact withthe coolant.

▶ In the event of skin or eyecontact with the coolant, seekmedical advice.

1.2.9 Danger due tochanges to the productenvironment

There is a risk of injury ordeath to the user or others, orof damage to the product andother property, in the eventof changes to the productenvironment.Changes must not be made tothe following equipment:

– The heat pump– The heat pump environment– The drain line and expansion

relief valve for the heatingwater

– The water and electricity sup-ply lines

– The heat pump's condensatedrain pipework

– The structural conditions thatmay affect the operationalsafety of the product.

1.2.10 Risk of injury andmaterial damage due toincorrect maintenanceor repairs

As a result of unauthorised in-terference or tampering with theproduct or parts of the system,

the operational safety of theproduct can no longer be en-sured and the guarantee there-fore becomes void.▶ Never interfere or tamper with

the product or other parts ofthe system.

▶ Never try to carry out main-tenance work or repairs onthe product yourself.

▶ Do not damage or removeany seals on components.Only qualified competentpersons and factory servicepersonnel are authorised tomake modifications to sealedcomponents.

▶ Have inspection and main-tenance work carried out by acompetent person.

1.2.11 Frost damage due to anunsuitable installationsite

Frost poses a risk of damageto the product and the wholeheating installation.▶ You should therefore ensure

that the heating installationalways remains in operationduring freezing conditions andthat all rooms are sufficientlyheated.

Even if rooms, or the wholedwelling, are not in use for cer-tain periods, the heating mustremain in operation.

Frost protection and monitoringdevices are only active whilethe product is connected tothe power supply. The productmust be connected to the powersupply.

1.2.12 Frost damage causedby insufficient roomtemperature

If the room temperature is settoo low in individual rooms, itcannot be ruled out that sec-tions of the heating installationmight be damaged by frost.▶ If you are going to be away

during a cold period, ensurethat the heating installationremains in operation and thatthe rooms are sufficientlyheated.

▶ You must observe the frostprotection instructions.

1.2.13 Frost damage causedby a power cut

During installation, your com-petent person connected yourproduct to the power mains.If the power supply is cut, it ispossible that parts of the heat-ing installation may becomedamaged by frost. If you wantto use an emergency powergenerator to maintain the oper-ational readiness of the product

during a power cut, note the fol-lowing:▶ Contact your competent per-

son for advice on installing anemergency power generator.

▶ Ensure that the technical val-ues of this generator (fre-quency, voltage, earthing)match those of the powermains.

1.2.14 Malfunction causedby incorrect systempressure

To avoid operating the systemwith too little water and thusprevent resulting damage, notethe following:▶ Check the system pressure

of the heating installation atregular intervals.

▶ You must observe the systempressure instructions.

1.2.15 Malfunction due toincorrect power supply

The power supply must remainwithin the specified limits so thatthe product does not malfunc-tion:

– 1 phase: 230 V (+10/-15%)~50 Hz

– 3 phases: 400 V (+10/-15%) 3N ~50 Hz

1.2.16 Avoid environmentaldamage caused byescaping coolant

The product contains R410Acoolant. The coolant must notbe allowed to escape into theatmosphere. R410A is a fluor-inated greenhouse gas coveredby the Kyoto Protocol, with aGWP of 1725 (GWP = GlobalWarming Potential). If this gasescapes into the atmosphere,its impact is 1725 times greaterthan the natural greenhousegas CO2.Before the product is disposedof, the coolant that is containedin it must be completely drainedinto a suitable vessel so thatit can then be recycled or dis-posed of in accordance withregulations.▶ Ensure that only officially cer-

tified competent persons withappropriate protective equip-ment carry out maintenancework on the coolant circuit oraccess it.

▶ Arrange for the coolant con-tained in the product to berecycled or disposed of bycertified competent persons inaccordance with regulations.

1.3 Intended use

1.3.1 State-of-the-arttechnology

The Vaillant aroTHERM heatpump systems are construc-ted using state-of-the-art tech-nology in accordance with therecognised safety rules andregulations. However, there isa risk of injury or death to theuser or others, or of damage tothe product and other property,in the event of improper use oruse for which it is not intended.

1.3.2 User qualification

This product can be used bychildren aged from 8 yearsand above and persons withreduced physical, sensory ormental capabilities or lack ofexperience and knowledge ifthey have been given supervi-sion or instruction concerninguse of the product in a safe wayand understand the hazards in-volved. Children must not playwith the product. Cleaning anduser maintenance work mustnot be carried out by childrenunless they are supervised.

1.3.3 Intended use

The Vaillant aroTHERM heatpump is designed for use as aheat generator for closed heat-ing installations. Operation of

the pump outside the applic-ation limits results in the heatpump being switched off bythe internal control and safetydevices.

1.3.4 Improper use

Any use which is not explicitlymentioned in the section "Inten-ded use" is deemed improper.Any other or additional usedoes not comply with the inten-ded use. Any direct commercialor industrial use is also deemedto be improper.

1.3.5 Observing otherapplicable documents

Intended use also includes theobservance of accompanyingoperating, installation and ser-vicing instructions for Vaillantproducts as well as for otherparts and components of thesystem.

1.3.6 Liability and secondaryclauses

The manufacturer/supplier isnot liable for any claims or dam-age resulting from improperuse. The user alone bears therisk.Caution.Improper use of any kind isprohibited.

1.4 CE label

 The CE label shows that theproducts comply with the basicrequirements of the applicabledirectives as stated on the iden-tification plate.The declaration of conformitycan be viewed at the manufac-turer's site.

3 Product description

3.1 Design of the heat pump system

The heat pump system consists of the following components:

– Heat pump– VWZ AI heat pump control module– Additional hydraulic components, if required– System controller

The heat pump can be operated by the VWZ AI heat pump control module. The exten-ded operation of the heat pump is carried out by the system controller.

The display lights up

– if you switch on the product or– if you press a button in the DIA system

while the product is switched on. At first,pressing this button does not trigger anyother function.

The light goes out after one minute if youdo not press any button.

4 Operation

4.1 Operating concept

You can operate the product using the se-lection buttons and the plus/minus buttons.

Both selection buttons have a soft keyfunction, i.e. their function can change.

By pressing :

– You can cancel the change to a setvalue or the activation of an operatingmode

– You can go one selection level higher inthe menu.

By pressing :

– You can confirm a set value or the activ-ation of an operating mode

– You can go one selection level lower inthe menu.

By pressing and at the same time:

– You can navigate to the menu.

By pressing or :

– You can scroll through the entries in themenu

– You can increase or decrease a selec-ted set value.

Adjustable values are always displayed asflashing.

You must always confirm a change to avalue. Only then is the new setting saved.You can press to cancel a procedure.If you do not press any buttons for longer15 minutes, the display returns to the basicdisplay.

4.2 Basic display

As soon as a fault message is present,the basic displays switches to the faultmessage.

4.3 Operating levels

The product has two operating levels.

The operating level for the operator showsthe most important information and offersset-up options which do not require anyspecial prior knowledge.

The operating level for the competent per-son is reserved for the competent persononly and is protected by a code. In thislevel, the competent person can set sys-tem-specific parameters.

4.6 Displaying the building circuitpressure

– You can display the current filling pres-sure of the heating installation in digitalform.

4.7 Reading the operatingstatistics

Menu → Information → Heating op.hours

Menu → Information → Cooling op.hours

Menu → Information → Total operatinghours

In each case, you can display the operat-ing hours for the heating mode, the coolingmode and the overall operation.

4.8 Displaying contact data

Menu → Information → Contact details

If your competent person has entered theirtelephone number during the installation,you can read this data under Contactdata.

4.9 Displaying the serial numberand article number

Menu → Information → Serial number

– The product's serial number is dis-played.

– The article number is found in thesecond line of the serial number.

4.10 Setting the display contrast

Menu → Basic setting → Display con-trast

– You can use this function to adjust thedisplay contrast to suit your needs.

4.11 Setting the language

If you want to set another language:

▶ Press and hold and at the sametime.

▶ Also press the fault clearance key for ashort time.

▶ Press and hold and until thedisplay shows the language setting.

▶ Select the required language by press-ing or .

▶ Press (OK) to confirm your selection.▶ Once you have set the correct lan-

guage, press (OK) again to confirm this.

5 Operation

5.1 Switching the product on/off

▶ Use a partition with a contact openingof at least 3 mm (e.g. fuses or powerswitches) to de-energise the product.

In various operating modes, the noisescome from the heat pump (Start, Thawing,Stop).

5.3 Activating frost protection

▶ To prevent the product from freezing,ensure that the product is switched on.

5.4 Setting the target feedtemperature in heating mode

The actual target flow temperature is auto-matically determined by the system con-troller (you can find further informationabout this in the operating instructions forthe system controller).

5.5 Setting a room thermostat orweather compensator

▶ Set the room thermostat or the weathercompensator (1) and thermostatic radi-ator valves (2) as specified in the relev-ant instructions for these accessories.

5.6 Checks and maintenancecarried out by the operator

The product switches off if the filling pres-sure in the heating installation falls below0.05 MPa (0.5 bar).

▶ Top up with water.

5.6.1 Cleaning the product

1. Switch the product off before you cleanit.

2. Clean the product's casing with adamp cloth and a little soap. Neveruse scouring or cleaning agentswhich could damage the casing or theoperator control elements.

3. Do not clean the product with a high-pressure cleaner.

4. At regular intervals, check that nobranches or leaves have gatheredaround the product.

5.6.2 Checking the maintenanceplan

Danger!Risk of injury and risk of ma-terial damage due to neg-lected or incorrect mainten-ance and repairs.

Neglected or incorrect mainten-ance work or repairs may leadto personal injury or damage tothe product.

▶ Never attempt to carry outmaintenance work or repairson the product.

▶ Employ an authorised heat-ing specialist company tocomplete such work. We re-commend making a mainten-ance agreement.

1. Regular inspection/maintenance ofyour product by a competent personis a prerequisite for ensuring that thesystem is constantly ready and safefor operation, reliable and has a longservice life.

NoteFailure to carry out mainten-ance and repair work, and non-compliance with the specifiedinspection, maintenance andreplacement intervals, leads toa loss of potential guaranteeclaims. We recommend makinga maintenance agreement witha competent person.

2. The maintenance intervals depend onthe local conditions and the use of theproduct.

3. Have parts that are relevant to thefunction and safety replaced by a com-petent person.

5.7 Having the producttemporarily decommissioned

6.2 Detecting and rectifying faults

This section shows all of the fault messages that can be rectified without seeking helpfrom the competent person in order to start up the product again.

The power supply has been disconnec-ted

Ensure that there hasnot been a power cutand that the product iscorrectly connected tothe power supply. Whenthe power supply is re-established, the productautomatically starts up.If a fault is still present,contact your competentperson.

Noises (hissing, knocking,humming)

If the heating demand stops, this may lead to bubbling and whistlingnoises. These noises are caused by the coolant.When the product starts up or stops, this may lead to creakingnoises. These noises are caused by the casing as it expands orcontracts when the temperature changes.If the product is functioning, this may lead to humming noises.These noises are caused by the compressor when the product is inheating mode.

The product releasessteam.

In winter and during the thawing procedure, steam may escapefrom the product. (The heat of the product melts the ice that hasformed.)

7.1 Having the productpermanently decommissioned

8.1 Recycling and disposal

▶ The competent person who installedyour product is responsible for the dis-posal of the packaging.

If the product is identified with thissymbol:

▶ In this case, do not dispose of theproduct with the household waste.

▶ Instead, hand in the product to a collec-tion centre for old electrical or electronicappliances.

If the product contains batteries thatare marked with this symbol, these bat-teries may contain substances that arehazardous to human health and the envir-onment.

▶ In this case, dispose of the batteries ata collection point for batteries.

8.2 Arranging disposal of coolant

The Vaillant aroTHERM heat pump is filledwith the coolant R410A.

▶ Coolant must only be disposed of byqualified competent persons.

9 Guarantee and customerservice

9.1 Guarantee

Vaillant provides a full parts and labourguarantee for this appliance for the dura-tion as shown on the enclosed registrationcard which must be fully completed andreturned within 30 days of installation. Allappliances must be installed by a suitablycompetent person fully conversant andin accordance with all current regulationsapplicable to the appliance type installa-tion. In the case of gas appliances the GasSafety (Installation and Use) Regulations1998, and the manufacturer’s instructions.In the UK competent persons approved atthe time by the Health and Safety Execut-ive undertake the work in compliance withsafe and satisfactory standards. Installersshould also be fully conversant with andcompetent with all necessary electrical andbuilding regulations that may apply to theinstallation.

In addition all unvented domestic hot watercylinders must be installed by a compet-ent person to the prevailing building regu-lations at the time of installation (G3). Allappliances shall be fully commissioned inaccordance with our installation manualand Benchmark commissioning check list(this will be included within the installa-tion manual). These must be signed andgiven to the user for safe keeping duringthe hand over process. Installers shouldalso at this time advise the user of the an-nual servicing requirements and advise ofappropriate service agreement.

Terms and conditions do apply to the guar-antee, details of which can be found on theregistration card included with this appli-ance. In order to qualify for guarantee afterone year the appliance must be servicedin accordance with our installation manualservicing instructions. The benchmark ser-vice history should be completed.
