On Saturday, April 13th, Opportunity House Athletics Unified Soccer Team, who
partnered with Northern Illinois University students, traveled to the University of
Illinois at Champaign-Urbana to participate in the Special Olympics Unity Cup.
This is the first year that OH Athletics has had a Unified Soccer Team.
Danny Trevino, Will Davis, Cody Zimmer, Michael Castritsis, Brennan Morrissey
and Jacob Hickey are the OH athletes that participated on the Unified Team.
The tournament was an outdoor soccer tournament (7on7) as part of the Region
III Spring 7v7 Soccer Championships through NIRSA (National Intramural and
Recreation Sports Association). There were Men’s, Women’s and a Unified
Division within this tournament, with five unified teams present
(University of Illinois, Illinois State, North Central College, Morton College, and
Northern Illinois University).
OH Unified Team won their three games played to earn a
gold medal. Congratulations, athletes!
Above: Aktion Club members are excited for the winners they
selected for the Roger Hoffman Memorial Scholarship
Aktion Club held its annual fundraiser at Tom & Jerry’s
in Sycamore on Tuesday, April 2nd to raise money for the Fourth Annual Roger
Hoffman Memorial Scholarship. With funds raised, this year Aktion Club was able to
select two scholarship winners at their April meeting. After sifting through ten
applications, they chose a young lady and a young gentleman that will be going to
school to become a paramedic and the other to study speech and communication
disorders. Roger’s sister and mother were in attendance at the meeting and were
excited about the applicants that were selected. Next month, members of Aktion
Club will attend the Genoa-Kingston Senior Awards Night and present the winners
with their scholarship.
This is by far one of Aktion Club’s favorite events of the year and the club would like
to thank everyone for their support at the fundraiser!
Venture Crew has been immersed in studying the spring
season! All Venture Crew sessions have been busy planting beans, sunflowers,
potatoes, avocados and more while learning about root systems and plant growth.
The Morning Venture Crew session has been studying birds and
different plants, as well.
The Afternoon Venture Crew session has been working on their community
service project of painting bird houses that they will donate to a local nursing
home so that the residents may enjoy watching the birds in the warmer months.
The Evening Venture Crew session will be finishing their Pet Merit Badge
soon and will begin working on their Nature Merit Badge by raising
and studying ladybug larvae.
