Fort McKay First Nation has aimed to maximize its participation in the economy to create sustainable, long-term growth and development within its community. Given its geographic location, Fort McKay has had many opportunities to work within the oil sands industry through developing its own companies. In 1986, the Fort McKay Group of Companies (FMGOC) was established, which is fully owned by the community. The FMGOC serves a number of corporate clients in northeastern Alberta: from the oil sands, pipelines and forestry industries to the public sector. In addition to this, Fort McKay First Nation has also established numerous Joint Venture Companies. With approximately 2,000 employees within the FMGOC and over $1.7 billion in revenues in the past five years, the company plays an important role within the Fort McKay First Nation.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Human Resources Manager reports directly to the CEO and leads a team of six who report up through an HR Supervisor. Reporting to the HR Supervisor are two Recruiters, an HR Generalist, Benefits Administrator, Recruitment Assistant, Administrative Receptionist and an HR Associate. This role originates and leads Human Resources practices and objectives that will provide an employee-oriented, high performance culture that emphasizes empowerment, quality, productivity and standards, goal attainment and the recruitment and ongoing development of a superior workforce.

The incumbent coordinates implementation of services, policies, and programs through Human Resources staff; reports to the CEO and assists and advises company managers about Human Resources issues.

The incumbent is to conduct all activities in a manner that supports the mission, the vision and the values of the Fort McKay Group of Companies LP.

KEY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Coordinate the resolution of specific policy-related and procedural issues and inquires by providing advice,assistance, follow-up and documentation

• Plan, advise and assist departmental managers on HR requirements

• Perform specific research/investigation into operational issues, as requested

• Recommend, develop and maintain human resource databases, computer software systems, and manualfiling systems

ABOUT FORT MCKAY FIRST NATION

Fort McKay First Nation (FMFN) is composed of over 800 band members, including those of Cree and Dene heritage with approximately 500 members residing in the community of Fort McKay—a community located approximately 65 km north of Fort McMurray along the shores of the Athabasca River and is a signatory to Treaty 8. As a community, Fort McKay boasts a long-standing history dating back thousands of years. The First Nation is managed by an elected Chief and Council, led by the Band’s CEO and senior administrative body.

As a First Nation, FMFN is a leader in working collaboratively with industry, and holds a successful and long-established record of strong relationship building with the various mining companies operating adjacent to its land. FMFN has aimed to maximize its participation in the economy to create sustainable, long-term growth and development. • Work with managers and staff to develop HR strategies and programs that address the organization’s needs and strategic plans

• Plan, develop, implement and evaluate personnel and labour relations strategies including policies, programs and procedures to address the organization’s human resource requirements

• Work with health, safety and environment personnel to develop and implement employee wellness and workplace safety programs

• Ensure compliance with employment legislation

• Assist with labour relations and in preparing, researching and negotiating collective agreements

• Provide timely, accurate and thorough performance and appraisal reviews for supervised employees

• Ensure accurate reports for month end reviews with upper management are delivered on time,

• Provide pragmatic and consistent guidance and advice to managers on grievances, attendance, disciplinary and performance issues

• Raise proactive issues with managers, identify practical solutions to complex and diverse HR issues and recommend appropriate action plans

• Review and make recommendations on revisions of HR Policies in compliance with changing or new legislation

• Other HR related activities as may be required

THE PERSON

QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience and education in Human Resources, Business, or Organization Development

• CPHR designation an asset

• 7+ years of progressive leadership experience in Human Resources positions

• Specialized training in employment law, compensation, organizational planning, organization, development, employee relations, safety, training, and preventive labour relations, preferred

• Knowledge and experience in employment law, compensation, organizational planning, recruitment, organization development, employee relations, safety, employee engagement and employee development

• Excellent written and spoken communication skills

• Outstanding interpersonal relationship building and employee coaching skills

• Demonstrated ability to lead and develop staff members

• Excellent computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment

• Experience in the administration of benefits and compensation programs and other Human Resources recognition and engagement programs and processes

• Evidence of the ability to practise and coach organization managers in the practice of a high level of confidentiality

• Excellent organizational leadership skills
