IP Video Market Trends • User-generated content dominates IP video today: Heavy
Reading 2011 survey of US video consumers finds 51% of online video content is user-generated
• YouTube stats: 4 billion views/day, 60 hours/minute, 30% growth in past year: by 2020, 75% of TV channels will be born on the internet
• Heavy Reading 2011 survey: 24% of respondents view internet video content several times a week; 20% view several times a month
• High bandwidth, professionally-produced video content becoming more popular
• IP video experience and service price are key concerns for consumers

Video Transcoding Use Case One
Many different video formats need to be transcoded for specific consumer devices

Comprehensive Video Transcoding
Transcoding different video formats using Cisco’s Transcode Manager (CTM)
Procedure: Copied a range of video types to external file server
Transcoded ten types of prevalent video content formats
Played transcoded video content using emulated clients and relevant unmanaged devices such as iPad and PC
CTM automatically: Detected new video content Transcoded multiple popular video content types to
Apple’s Adaptive Bit Rate (ABR) Streaming All videos played to emulated and real clients without failure
Video Transcoding Use Case Two
Many types of consumer devices require videos to be streamed in different formats
Video Source Format
Multi-Format Content Delivery
Cisco Transcode Manager (CTM) transcodes videos to multiple formats
Multi-Format Content Delivery
Procedure: Played all streaming formats using Ciscos’s CDS-IS on
Content Delivery Engine (CDE) as Streaming device
Down/Upshift video quality level
Repeat the test with ASR9010 Integrated Service Module (ISM) instead of CDE
Multi-Format Content Delivery – Results
Results:
Ciscos’s CDS-IS and ASR 9010 ISM blade deliver: ABR based Smooth Stream Format (SSF)
ABR based HTTP Live Streaming (HLS)
Flash player media content
Windows media (WMV)
Multi-format streaming delivery to unmanaged devices via CDE streaming device and also via ASR 9010 ISM blade

MediaSuite
• Functional spot-check verification of Mediasuite carried out • Steps as shown here were observed by EANTC in general • Handling of encrypted video files was successfully
evaluated as a functional demonstration as well
Adaptive Bit Rate Video Scalability
How much video content can be served to thousands of users using a single CDE250-2S6?
Procedure: Emulate 12,000 clients to play cached and non-
cached Video on Demand (VoD) content concurrently for 72 minutes
Adaptive Bit Rate Video Scalability - Results
Results: Each client received an
average of 3 Mbit/s streaming bit rate
Total Ethernet throughput: 39.5 Gbit/s across four 10GigabitEthernet interfaces
CDS-IS sustainably delivers 37 Gbit/s of video traffic to 12,000 concurrent users
Live Streaming Redundancy
What happens when Cisco Media Processor (CMP) fails while transcoding live feeds?
Procedure: Play video using HLS client (iPad) and SSF client (laptop)
Disable CMP1 while watching video
Live Streaming Redundancy
Cisco Media Processor provides multiple encoders for clients to switch to when one fails
Observations: Both HLS and SSF clients receive “Page Not Found”
HTTP messages after Cisco Media Processor 1 has been disabled
HLS client continues to play video without visual impact after CMP failure
SSF client continues to play video with a minimal visual impairment after CMP failure
VoD Transcoder Redundancy
CTM reallocates failed transcoder jobs
Can Cisco Transcode Manager (CTM) can reallocate failed transcoder’s work load to other active encoders?
Mobile Video
Cisco mobile video optimization avoids mobile network congestion
Mobile video features: Video Pacing - Reduce unwatched video downloads
Real-time Transrating – Reduce video bandwidth
Mobile Video
Procedure: Demonstrate mobile video features by watching videos
