    Changing the GameOracle uses Intel Xeon processor 5500 seriesbased systems with Intel Intelligent Power Node Manager to increase rackdensity and propel business growth

    Oracle was intent on increasing the computing density of its data centers so it could serve more customers at a lower cost and be in astrong competitive position when the economy improves. The gating factor: power consumption. The only way to reduce the amountof power each server used would be to pack more processing capability into the same space. With the Intel Xeon processor 5500series, Oracle can match the power to the application.

    n de M gerOracle was refreshing its existing dual-socket, quad-core servers on a three- to

    ve-year schedule to increase processingcapability and energy ef ciency, but hadno signi cant power management in usein the data centers. We started investi-gating and talked with the people at Intel,says Nalezyty. They made us aware ofIntel Intelligent Power Node Manager inthe Intel Xeon processor 5500 series,and showed us how we could integrate

    it with the Oracle Enterprise Managersoftware we already used.

    pr f f c e Sh ws Res sThe Intel team helped conduct a proof ofconcept at the Oracle Advanced TechnologyLab to evaluate the Intel Xeon processor5500 series using workloads from OracleUniversity. We were impressed by boththe performance and the power manage-ment, says Frank Martin, architect forglobal IT at Oracle. Having Intel Intelligent

    Power Node Manager built into the Intelprocessors enables us to throttle them upor down for optimal frequency and power.By actively managing the power consump-tion in individual servers, we can put a lotmore processing capability in each of ourdata centers.

    Oracle is in the process of ordering IntelXeon processor 5500 seriesbased serverswith Intel Intelligent Power Node Managertechnology for its internal IT environment.

    to Oracle University and on-demandservices in the future.

    pr je ed E erg S vi gsWith active power management enabledby the Intel Xeon processor 5500 series,the Oracle team projects an energy sav-ings of approximately 35 percent. If wehave virtual machines scheduled to runon a server and it doesnt have enoughspace, we power up a second server, ex-plains Martin. But now we dont have to

    bring the entire machine up, just enoughprocessor frequency and RAM to do the job. Since its not all running, the energyuse and operational expense is signi -cantly reduced.

    M re Servers i E h R kAs a result of the reduced power con-sumption, the Oracle team projects it willbe able to get at least 50 percent moreservers into a rack using the same amountof power that is currently allocated. To

    provision 5 kW of power, we can usetwice as many Intel Xeon processor 5500seriesbased servers compared to ourprevious multi-core servers, says Martin.We no longer have to assume everymachine will use maximum power, becausewe can designate which applications needhigh-frequency processing and whichshould be executed at lower frequenciesto save energy.

    M re c s mers er D ce erThe advanced memory architecture of theIntel Xeon processor 5500 series allowsthe IT team to add more RAM on eachphysical server. We can have 64 GB ofRAM compared to 16 GB or 32 GB on ourother servers, says Martin. We can thenpartition that memory into more virtualmachines. Ultimately, it means we canserve more customers in the same datacenter space while meeting our service-level agreements.

    Nalezyty credits the Intel technology withdramatically increasing the density of thedata center space. The Intel Xeon processor5500 series is a true game-changer,enabling greatly increased density andpower management, says Nalezyty. Ourbusiness model in IT comes down to thecost per virtual machine, and we thinkIntel Intelligent Power Node Managerfundamentally improves the equation.
