It’s a DRYHEAT!

Whatever! It was a hot heat!About two-hundred of ISA’s volunteer

leaders from all over the world and key staffpersonnel gathered in Scottsdale, AZ. Whyyou ask? Good question.

Have you ever wondered how it allcomes together? I mean the standards, the benefits, the EXPO, thetraining, etc. Well, we meet in person twice a year for about a week(these meetings are call the Spring Leadership Meeting and the FallLeadership Meeting), where we have meetings concerning you and ISA.Why do I say you? Simple, we are members just like you. When wemake decisions, we carefully consider how it will benefit the member-ship, that’s you.

You know, I could go on and on about how busy we are duringthis time, instead, I’ll let the schedule for just three days speak for itself!Saturday, June 23, 2007 Meeting8:00am-8:50am LDR First Timers’ Orientation8:00am-9:50am SOC Admissions Committee (Closed)8:00am-10:50am SPLN New Venture Investment Committee10:00am-10:50am DVP 2008 Joint DLC Planning11:00am-11:50am GEN GENERAL OPENING SESSION1:00pm-1:50pm LDR ISA’s Certified Automation Professional (CAP)Program1:00pm-1:50pm SOC Executive Board Preview Session2:00pm-2:50pm DVP Section and District Issues Committee2:00pm-2:50pm LDR Section Finance (US Sections)2:00pm-2:50pm SOC H&A Joint Service Award Subcommittees(Closed)3:00pm-3:50pm LDR Section Leaders Roundtable3:00pm-3:50pm SOC H&A Technical Awards Subcommittee (Closed)4:00pm-4:50pm DVP District Budget/DLC Committee4:00pm-4:50pm SOC Honors & Awards Committee6:00pm-9:30pm GEN Group Event - Dinner at the Desert BotanicalGarden

August 2007 ISA Newsletters, Southern District 11 9

The Future for ISABy Kim Miller Dunn C.A.P.ISA President-Elect Secretary

This is the first article of a series on “TheFuture for ISA” that will appear in subsequentissues of the newsletter. It was originallypresented by Ms. Dunn at ExpoControl inMexico City in June 2007.

As the world’s leading technical societyfor the advancement of the automationprofession, ISA serves automation profes-sionals and practitioners in over 100 coun-tries. ISA has about 172 local sections in over

30 countries - 6 of these are served by this newsletter. In addition toproviding excellent networking opportunities for their members, sectionsserve as a link between the Society and the automation industry.

Our Society leaders throughout the world, are volunteers who workin every possible capacity within the automation industry. They donatetheir own time to ISA and we would not have a functioning Societywithout these dedicated volunteers.

As our tagline states, we are setting the standard for automation byhelping over 30,000 worldwide members solve difficult technicalproblems. This is done through Education and training, Certification,Standards development, Conferences and Exhibits, and publications - Thefive core competencies of ISA. The Society is “reinventing itself”through these endeavors. However, Society leaders all over the globehave said that ISA needed to make additional changes to be relevant in thefuture. It is not that ISA or the automation profession has a negativereputation it is simply that we have no reputation.

Why does the automation industry lack a reputation? There is little in our everyday life that is not touched by automa-

tion. From the food we eat, the water we drink, the energy that fuels ouractivities and the transportation that gets us where we need to be - Allare touched by automation and the automation professional. Automa-tion professionals have little stature in the executive suite within thecompanies where they work - It is ISA’s primary responsibility toenhance that stature. In the words of former Society President Bob Ives“plants that run efficiently with greater throughput, consistent highquality, and lower energy costs do so primarily because of automationengineers”. ISA and its members should be the messengers to proclaimthat and this is a challenge that we are now embracing.“We control the world”

Here and now I proclaim to you that as automation professionals -We control the world - and ISA is committed to carrying this messageglobally. It is only a matter of time before automation professionals willno longer be the un-sung heroes of industry - but the recognized leadersof process and plant floor environments.

In order to achieve this level of recognition, an all encompassingstrategy is required - A strategy that in conjunction with our five CoreCompetencies will raise the recognition of our profession and thepractitioners within the field. (To be continued next month.)

Kim Miller Dunn is ISA President-Elect Secretary and Director ofthe Council of Student Affairs and the ISA Professional DevelopmentDepartment. Kim is a member of the Council of Society Delegates, ISAExecutive Board, Executive Committee, New Ventures InvestmentCommittee.
