INSIDE THIS ISSUE Dear Friends,

On Sunday, July 15 we begin a new series simply entitled,

Number 1. The idea for this series actually began 25 years

ago when I was sitting in a preaching class in seminary. One

day the professor handed out record albums that were

currently at the top of the charts. Our assignment was to

listen to the albums and glean what we could about the

culture of the day. We would use the lyrics to help us write a

message that would speak relevantly to people who were

immersed and bombarded with the sounds and writings of

the day.

The songs were cultural markers that we could use to bridge

the gap between God and the secular world. Paul did the

same thing some 2,000 years ago when he entered the city of

Athens. The scriptures tell us that when Paul arrived in Athens

he was distressed to see the city full of idols. After talking with

several people he finally received an opportunity to speak to

the city council. He begins his message with these words…

Men of Athens! I see that in every way you are very

religious. For as I walked around and looked carefully

at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with

this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. Now what you

worship as something unknown I am going to proclaim

to you.

I thought he was distressed – he went from distressed to inquisitive to informative fast, but

why? The idols that were distressing him were part of the cherished culture of the people of

Athens so Paul used them as connecting points to reach the people of Athens. That was

the point my professor wanted the class to learn – connect to the people so you can

connect them to God.

Back to July 15, 2012. We chose a Number 1 song of each decade to write a message

about. I believe it will be a great series, and I am asking you to invite some unchurched

friends to join you for this unique series. If they like music, they are going to like this

series. We begin on July 15 with a message about a #1 song of the 50s. I can hardly

wait! Join me in praying for this series, and invite someone who likes music to join you. By

the way, the result of Paul’s connecting message: several citizens of Athens became

believers – may the same happen at Altoona United Methodist.

Rockin around the clock with you,

Pastor John

Coming July 15—

A 6-week series as

unforgettable as the

chart-topping songs that

dominate each decade

Successful June Meeting

Approximately 60 Top Notchers enjoyed a pizza buffet and an informational talk from

Master Gardeners Judy and Bill Goshorn at the Altoona Pizza Ranch on June 12. We found

out how to grow scrumptious tomatoes and what to do when you have too many to eat.

There are lots of recipes for those tomatoes, and the food pantry will also take your extra

produce, so it doesn't go to waste. Tomato plants were given as door prizes.

July 10 Tour

Do you know this man? If not, join us for our July meeting and find out all

about him! We will tour the Hall of Laureates at the World Food Prize building

and have lunch in Pleasant Hill at Okoboji Grill. Okoboji Grill has lunch specials

for $5.99, or you can order off the regular menu. See the time schedule

below. Sign up in the Narthex on Sunday. Questions? Call Herb Phillips (967-4641).

August Meeting Change of Plans The August meeting has undergone a change

of plans. It will still consist of a noon potluck, but

the program will be a trio from Floyd, IA called

Three Redeemed instead of a talent show. Join

us for a great afternoon!

We extended the choral season an extra Sunday so the

Dads could have their song for Father’s Day. Both

Mother’s Day and Father’s Day brought many smiles as

we recollected all the momisms and fatherly advice set to

music. Chancel Choir will now take the summer off and

resume the last Wednesday in August.

We are planning a 1960s boy band and a number one hit from 1980s using choir backup.

If you are a singer looking for a one-morning gig, you may want to get involved. We

would love to see you! Contact Steve at 967-2991 or [email protected].

Orchestra will rehearse on Sundays prior to the traditional service at 7:50 a.m.

On Friday, June 29 at 6 p.m. C23 is beginning a new study

called Twisting the Truth. If you are college-aged, home for the

summer, or in your 20s or 30s, join us! Led by Anna

McLellan and Melissa Hanson.

In this study, Andy Stanley exposes some common ways God’s

truth gets twisted. Each one has the potential to destroy your

relationships, cloud your decisions, and distort y our perception

of Him. This study helps us discover the ways the truth gets

twisted in our lives and culture and how we can recognize and

overcome them.

A church-wide small group study and sermon series in a home near you this fall.

The Bible isn’t meant to just inform us, it is meant to TRANSFORM us.
