How parents can help:

- Listen to your child read for 15-20 minutes per day and ask them questions about what they have read.

- Support your child with their Mathletics challenges and working on their Number Stars.

- Encourage your child to learn their spellings and complete the activity each week. Spellings are given out on a Monday and the children are tested on the words the following Monday.

Please make sure your child has a water bottle in school.

English

Reading (word reading and comprehension)

Children will develop reading skills using VIPERS.

Vocabulary – meaning of words, root words, suffixes, prefixes and synonyms.

Inference – make and justify inferences using evidence from the text.

Predicting – guessing what may happen from details given and implied.

Explaining – how meaning is enhanced through choice of language.

Retrieving – identifying key details from fiction and non-fiction.

Summarising – the main events from more than one paragraph.

Writing (handwriting, composition, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation.)

Children will:

Write a job description using organisational features and ambitious vocabulary looking for a Yeoman Warder.

Write narratives with an interesting plot, setting and characters based on Katie in London.

Write non-narrative material, which uses organisational devices e.g. designing a poster persuading people to come to London on holiday.

Write a diary entry from several points of view about a journey around London.

This term, we will be particularly focusing on using commas after fronted adverbials, which tell us how, when or where something was done, using pronouns and nouns appropriately, apostrophes for plural possession and using and punctuating direct speech correctly.

There will be a strong focus on expanded noun phrases, which give more detail about nouns e.g. describing the Crown Jewels.

Accurately, use direct speech based on conversations in Katie in London.

Maths

This term, the children will be consolidating learning from the Autumn and Spring term, as well as learning some new material.

The topics covered this term are as follows:

Addition and subtraction of money – virtual shopping trip to Hamleys.

Addition and subtraction in a word problem context.

Measurement conversions, including mm, cm, m, kg and g.

Recording and interpreting data from tables and bar charts.

Fractions and decimals (money – cost of tourist attractions in London.)

Negative numbers.

Telling the time to the nearest minute.

Reading and interpreting timetables.

2D and 3D shape within architecture of London Landmarks.

Consolidate times tables and related division facts.

Roman numerals – Big Ben.

Describing movements between positions as translations.

Science

This term, our topic is Rivers and The Water Cycle. This is an exciting topic as we can extend our outdoor learning and make the most of our beautiful school.

The children will be able to:

Compare and group materials together, according to whether they are solids, liquids or

gases.

Observe that some materials change state when they are heated or cooled, and measure

or research the temperature at which this happens in degrees Celsius (°C).

Identify the part played by evaporation and condensation in the water cycle and associate the rate of evaporation with temperature.

Topic – London

We are lucky enough to have another fantastic topic to learn about this term – London. The children will learn about their local city and the history of London.

Children will cover the following History objectives within the topic:

apply knowledge of chronology.

make a timeline of events/developments.

describe similarities and differences between time periods.

describe the ways of life of people who lived in this country.

describe the ideas and beliefs people had.

describe why events and people are significant.

select appropriate information from different sources to find out about the past.

Write as if they live in the past.

Geography – Rivers.

The children will:

Name and locate counties and cities of the United Kingdom,

geographical regions and their identifying human and physical

characteristics, key topographical features (including hills,

mountains, coasts and rivers), and land-use patterns. Understand

how some of these aspects have changed over time.

Identify the position and significance of latitude, longitude, Equator, Northern Hemisphere,

Southern Hemisphere, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, Arctic and Antarctic Circle, the

Prime/Greenwich Meridian and time zones.

Human and physical geography

Describe and understand key aspects of physical geography.

Geographical skills and fieldwork

Use maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate countries and describe

features studied.

RE – Why do you judge me?

In what ways are people discriminated against today?

Why do some people judge or ‘label’ others without knowing them?

What is the significance of Holocaust memorial Day 27th January?

What is the significance of the ‘Golden Rule’ which can be found in many traditions?

How can we be bridge-builders between people? Why do you think that some acts of

bridge building and asking for forgiveness take courage?

How have the actions of any one individual or organisation that has campaigned against discrimination made a difference?

Art and Design

We will be looking at pictures of the River Thames by different artists through the ages, trying to put them in chronological order and recreating our own.

Design & Technology – Food

We will be linking our learning to London and fish in the Thames to make Fish Paté. Our International Day will also look at food from around the world where we will embrace the multicultural society of London.

PE - Athletics

The children will develop skills and accuracy in running, throwing and jumping, which will

gradually become more competitive. These skills will help them in the run up to Croydon

Athletics and Sports Day.

Swimming

The children will travel on the minibus to Royal Russell School, where they will have a 1/2 hour

swimming lesson from a qualified swimming instructor.

Children with long hair will need to wear a swim hat and have their hair tied up.

Computing

- Select, use and combine a variety of software (including internet services) on a range of

digital devices to design and create a range of programs, systems and content that accomplish

given goals, including collecting, analysing, evaluating and presenting data and information:

- Photos

- Art/Design

- Film

- Audio/Music

Time to master skills/cover any missed objectives.

Music

The children will continue to learn how to play their instruments, they are doing so well!

They will be working on how to:

Play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts, using their voices and playing musical instruments with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression.

Improvise and compose music for a range of purposes using the interrelated dimensions of music.

Listen with attention to detail and recall sounds with increasing aural memory.

Use and understand musical notations.

The children will also learn about how sound travels within a couple of our Soundstart sessions.
