DEVELOPMENT OF ORGANIC AGRICULTURE IN SLOVAKIADevelopment of this type of agricultural production inSlovakia started in the year 1991 in connection withexperience and development trends in West Europeancountries.

In this period the !asic regulatory framework for thesystem of ecological economy !ecame "#ules of organicagriculture valid for the territory of the Slovak #epu!lic$which were !ased on principles and re%uirements ofecological agriculture defined !y the I&'(). *1 farms

have entered the system mostly agriculturalcooperatives with a total area of 1+ ,,* ha ofagricultural land. (fter the conclusion of the conversion*1 entities were allowed to la!el organic production fromthe 199+ harvest as "!io$.



CONCEPTION OF ORGANIC

AGRICULTUREIn the year 199- a "onception of 'rganic (griculturein Slovakia$ was worked out and approved !y thegovernment of the Slovak #epu!lic. /his fundamental

document determined the !asic direction of ecologicalagriculture in the Slovak #epu!lic in a hori0on until theyear 212 and has adopted a set of measures for itsrealisation.

( !asic change in the legal performance of ecological

agriculture occurred in the year 1993 when was passed (ct of the 4ational ouncil of the Slovak #epu!lic 4o.+51993 oll. on Ecological (griculture and the6roduction of 7io8&oodstuffs.



PRESENT STATE OF ORGANIC

AGRICULTURE IN THE SLOVAK REPUBLIC/he area of ecologically cultivated land is approximately- *33 ha at present of that 1 112 ha of ara!le land +3911 ha of permanent grass cover *+ ha of orchards and1** ha of vineyards. 1*1 organic entities are registered of

which - organic producers of !io8products -9 entitiesare in conversion and there are 1 organic producers of!io8foodstuffs.

With respect to the geographical distri!ution of farms theirhighest density is in mountain and su!8montane areas

mainly in the districts of :adca ;ysuck< 4ov< )estoSvidn=k 7arde>ov Stropkov and ?umenn< while thenetwork of organic enterprises is lower in lowlands.
