Preface

Inflammation is a central process in health and disease . The immune system´s response to pathogens, repair of tissue and organ damage and many other processes are intricately linked to inflammation . A rapid and strong response of inflammation is necessary for the defense against pathogens . On the other hand uncontrolled or undampened inflammation may lead to acute or chronic organ damage such as necrosis or fibrosis . Central for the understanding of the role of inflammation in health and disease is its regulation . In recent years important insights have been gained in this crucial process and continue to lead to novel therapies for patients suffering from uncontrolled inflammatory conditions .

Inflammation has always been Prof . Jürgen Schölmerich’s main research interest . However, he did not focus on a single organ . His scientific questions came from his clinical experience and thus his research included conditions such as pancreatitis, liver cirrhosis and its complications and certainly inflammatory bowel diseases . He always tackled scientific and clinical problems with a broad vision and stimulated the exchange of ideas between gastroenterologists, rheumatologists, endocrinologists and specialists in infectious diseases . Using his thorough scientific approach he has trained and inspired dozens of researchers in his academic career at the Universities of Freiburg and Regensburg .

This symposium on the occasion of his retirement has two purposes: to honor his achievements for scientific research and clinical medicine and to bring the pieces of the puzzle together- as many as we can lay our hand on yet . More importantly Jürgen Schölmerich’s integrative scientific approach will be mirrored by this symposium . Researcher in the fields of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Rheumatology, Endocrinology and Infectious Diseases will share their latest results to provide insights into cutting edge research thus creating novel overarching insights and stimulating innovative ideas .

We cordially invite you to share this outstanding event with us and to honor Jürgen Schölmerich’s accomplishments .
