With the terrible weather over Christmas and at the beginning ofJanuary, the local shops need your support more than ever - businessesall over the country have suffered, except perhaps for those selling snowshovels, sledges and wellies!
A Thank You as always must go to everyone who has advertised with theOssett & Horbury Review and to all our readers who use the advertiserswithing the magazine - your support is very much appreciated and all theteam wish you all a very happy and prosperous 2010.

Break theCycle of Yo-yo DietingwithLighterLifeMost people know obesity is on the increase,
and so are all the medical conditions
associated with it. What you may not realise
is that being just three stone overweight
classifies you as being clinically obese and
this can affect self confidence, fitness levels
and more seriously, according to figures
released by the NHS puts you at an
increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes,
hypertension and cancer. Obesity is
estimated to shorten life by an average of
nine years. But you no longer have to be
another statistic thanks to LighterLife.
LighterLife is a unique weight-loss and
weight-management programme that has
been designed specifically for men and
women who have a Body Mass Index (BMI)
of 25 or over, and the programme has
successfully helped thousands of people to
make lasting changes and enjoy happier,
healthier lives.
The medically monitored programme was
developed over a decade ago by three
professional women with personal
experience of obesity who wanted to offer a
lasting solution to the familiar phenomenon of
yo-yo dieting. It is the only national weight-
loss and weight-management plan that looks
beyond food to examine lifestyle and
emotions in order to help clients to break the
weight loss / weight gain cycle.
“There is more to weight loss than eating
less and exercising more,” comments Peter
Barrett, a LighterLife Counsellor for the
Wakefield area. “If it was that easy everyone
would be slim and healthier. That is why
LighterLife uses a powerful combination of
very low calorie nutritionally complete soups,
shakes and bars, which enable fast and
effective weight loss, along with counselling
techniques which include cognitive
behavioural therapy (CBT) and transactional
analysis (TA) to examine the thoughts,
feelings and behaviours that have led clients
to become overweight.”
Peter runs LighterLife meetings in small,
single sex groups of 7-12 people and “by
removing conventional food from the
equation, his clients are able to focus on
themselves and to question their eating
habits, whilst at the same time having the
motivation to keep on the programme
because they see the weight coming off
week after week, which is really important
when you have a lot of weight to lose. The
counselling, coupled with motivational tools,
enables people to make lasting changes to
their diet and ultimately their life,” says Peter
The nature of the weekly groups is extremely
supportive and clients can also make
additional visits to Peter if they feel they need
a little more support. And the support
doesn’t stop there. Once the target weight
has been achieved, the qualified LighterLife
Counsellor re-introduces clients to
conventional food slowly and educates you
on healthy choices in order to help you
maintain your weight loss and new figure
for life.

Distress, low mood and worry are
the major mental health problems
of the 21st Century and affect
more than one in three of us at
some time.
This course has been designed to give
easier access at an affordable cost to an
effective Psychological treatment and
doing so in a way that cuts through
jargon.
By empowering users to understand why
they feel as they do, and to learn new
ways of improving how they feel, the
course aims to provide ready access to
key information on how to be more
confident and happier.
The course uses cognitive behaviour
therapy (CBT) which is an effective and
practical way of helping people tackle
common problems such as low mood
and anxiety as well as helping them
cope with longer-term physical health
problems.
It aims to provide a range of life skills
that are practical and effective, and is
based on “Helping people to help
themselves”. A crucial element is to
inform, educate and teach key life skills.
The course is supported by a series of
CBT self-help workbooks that can be
used between the sessions. They
encourage the reader to put what they
are learning into practice, and to stop,
think and reflect on what is being
learned.
The course is designed for groups of
between 7 and 10 people and is split
into 8 one and a half hour sessions.
There is also a free to use website to
compliment the course at:
www.livinglifetothefull.com
The course is run locally at Ashfield
House in Ossett by Peter Barrett
Dip.couns MBACP who has many years
experience of using CBT within a group
process.

Local foot health practitioner, LornaBottomly, has written a series of articles footrelated problems. In this third article she islooking at problems with Heel Fissures
Heel FissuresHeel fissures, also known as cracked heels, can be a simple cosmetic problem and anuisance, but can also lead to serious medicalproblems.Heel fissures occur when the skin on thebottom, outer edge of the heel becomes hard, dry and flaky, sometimes causing deepfissures that can be painful or bleed.Heel fissures can affect anyone, but riskfactors include:• Living in a dry climate• Obesity• Consistently walking barefoot or wearing
sandals or open-backed shoes• Inactive sweat glandsLike many foot conditions heel fissures canbecome more serious of they go untreatedand become deep or infected. This is
especially dangerous for people withdiabetes or compromised immune systems. While, in contrast, the regular application ofemollients is indicated for dry heel fissures. In some cases the edge of the heel may beheavily calloused and need to be reducedwith a drill or scalpel before medication isadministered.
CornsA corn is an inverted cone of hard skin whichis pushed into the skin. The most commontypes of corns are divided into two subtypes.A hard corn appears as a dry, horny mass ofhyperkeratosis (hard skin) with a centralcore. They appear mainly on the sole of thefoot and prominent bony areas. A soft corn results from the absorption of anextreme amount of moisture fromperspiration and is noted by it’s characteristicmacerated appearance. A soft corn can be anextremely painful lesion that can develpbetween any of the toes but it is mostcommonly found between the fourth andfifth toes. A Hammertow deformity can be a commoncause of hard and soft corns. Most lesionscan be managed conservatively by the use ofproperly fitting shoes, enucliation andpadding to redistribute mechanical forces.

Movement and dance classes are available for girls
and boys of all ages, from basic movement classes
which focus on getting children to be active,
through jumping around, stretching, running and
even being still, to more advanced dance classes
for older children with more advanced motor skills
and coordination and better concentration.
Dance classes are often available for children
from the age of two or three upwards. They can
cover all forms of movement and creative dance,
including ballet, tap, modern jazz and freestyle.
Many schools also run classes in cheerleading,
gymnastics and theatrecraft or drama.
Dance classes are a great introduction to
physical exercise and being active. They help
develop key skills, such as coordination, balance,
flexibility, strength, stamina, discipline and even
memory. Being active in this way also helps boost a
child’s self-esteem, making them feel good about
their own abilities and increasing their self-
confidence. And one of the greatest benefits of
dance is that it sparks a child's imagination and
nurtures individual creativity in a unique way. Dance
classes share the joy of physical self-expression in
a supportive and structured setting. This can have
a positive impact on children who have limited
physical abilities, who act out or who have a difficult
time sitting still. Involving children in dance also
teaches the basic elements of creative movement,
such as time, space, rhythm and design.
Younger children have short attention spans, so
dance and movement classes are often no longer
than 30 minutes. A good teacher keeps the class
exciting and moving, so no-one is able to get
bored. The focus of classes for young children
tends to be wide ranging, which helps gain their
interest for longer, and is likely to explore all the
different styles and approaches to dance and
movement.
As children get older, they may find that they
prefer one type of dance or movement over others,
or develop certain preferences. Classes for older
children tend to focus more on certain styles, such
as ballet, tap, contemporary and jazz, so offer ideal
options for them to move on to study and learn in
more depth. Some higher grade dance exams
awards qualification equivalent to GCSE’s and A
Level and may be used towards the points
requirements of universities and colleges. The
length of classes tends to increase with age too,
with an hour or more becoming the norm, and the
classes become more disciplined in terms of
behaviour, practice, effort and presentation.
The benefits of attending dance class are
undeniable and as well as those discussed above
will show themselves in all aspects of life, from
swimming instructors commenting about beautifully
pointed toes when your child is learning to swin, to
drama teachers commenting on how creatively
your child is able to express themselves and move
and even in adulthood, other adults commenting
on how graceful ex dancers move and carry
themselves.

After the fantastic success of the last event, with an
incredible 2235 visitors in just two 7hr
days, l suppose it was more a question of
not if but when would the next event be,
l'm very pleased to inform everyone that
the Ridings management team lead by
Barbara Winston have once again made a
shop unit available to us for next year,
starting on the 10th Mar 11am press
launch by invitation only and the 12th
&13th March open to the public 9-30am to
4-30am each day, but please keep looking
in the windows from mid January for items
been displayed and information regarding
the event, the shop unit in question is at the moment
been used to sell Christmas calendar's, its next to H
Samuel,s as you enter from the Cathedral entrance.
The event will be run under the banner of A
Window To Your Past, the theme will be Births
including Christenings, Marriages and Deaths. or as
some might suggest, Cradle to the Grave.
A Window To Your Past team and its invited partners
will have local and knowledgeable experts available
through out the event, so visitors can ask any question
about the exhibits or their own family history, below is
a list of all societies and groups who will be taking part
and a brief description of what they will be displaying.
This time we will have the added attraction of a
professional film company who will be making a
documentary of the event, so if you have an interesting
story or photographs please let me know, also a
number of magazines will be carrying a full feature on
the event in their February issues.
We will be displaying a large number of old family
weddings photographs, plus photographs of
Christenings, and memorials and churches etc. will form
a continuous exhibition around most of the shop unit,
to compliment and add further interest there will be
lots of items of memorabilia.
One of the displays that will undoubtedly attract
media attention, will be the story of a local couple who
met before they were born? "correct" went to the
same school together, got married and were the centre
of a media story that attracted press coverage from all
over the world, including ITN and Yorkshire Calendar,
we now have the actual TV footage along with lots of
photographs etc taken at the time, including the brides
actual wedding dress, all will be shown on a screen at
the event, this story will guarantee lots of press
interest.
Wakefield & District Family History SocietyAt the last Window To Your Past event Wakefield &
District Family History Society took as their theme the
name of Sidebottom's hardware shop which used to
stand in Marygate before the row of shops were
demolished around 1900. Using parish registers, census
returns, newspaper reports, wills, the IGI and
monumental inscriptions we traced the
family tree of the Sidebottom family and
eventually found a living descendant. For the
coming event in March we are using
photographs and original documents to
show aspects in the lives of the ancestors of
some our members. For instance, in the
