Don’t Commit Academic Suicide- APC Tells Osun State Varsity Students

NEWS has just reached the All ProgressivesCongress (APC) secretariat that somestudents in the Ejigbo Campus of Osun

State University are selling their voters’ cardsto the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) agentsat N10,000 each. This is a shame and a tragedy ifit actually happened. And it speaks volumes onthe quality of mind of those involved.

The APC therefore, calls on other students inthat campus, or any othercampus of the university, not to sell their birthrightto criminals who did nextto nothing to help thempay their educational bills,(but actually increasedschool fees) when theywere in government.

Osun State Universitystudents should begrateful to God in the firstplace that He broughtOgbeni Rauf Aregbesolanot only to reduce theirschool fees from anaverage of N200,000 toN75,000 but also toincrease their bursaryfrom N3,000 to N10,000for others, and fromN10,000 to N100,000 forlaw and medical students.Any student who sells hisvoter’s card therefore, commits a crime againsthimself because the PDPhas vowed to reverseeverything Aregbesolahas done in the statewhich means theuniversity fees will revertto N200,000 if not more, that is totally beyond thecapacity of parents inOsun to pay, whilebursary will come downto N3,000 again.

The APC is urging thestate university authoritiesto intervene and make thestudents understand thatby selling their voters’cards, they arecommitting “academicsuicide”.

“That is the tragedy ofit all. The authorities ofthe university mustintervene and otherstudents should help theircolleagues come out ofthe bewitching situationthey have been put by thePDP”, the statementread.

The governor, who wasalso decorated on theoccasion as the patron ofboth associations, stressedthat the honour bestowedon him was a motivationand encouragement to bemore dedicated indeveloping the state.

He then thanked themembers of theassociations forrecognising hisadministration’s bold stepsto place the state on globalmap.

In his address, theChairman of TORA, AlhajiIbrahim Folorunsho, stated that theendorsement of thegovernor was a result ofthe numerous projects theadministration hasexecuted in the last threeand a half years, which hedescribed asunprecedented in thehistory of the state.

He noted that thei n f r a s t r u c t u r a ldevelopment of the stateunder Aregbesola’sadministration has greatlyimproved the welfare ofthe people in the state.

He added that the

massive roadconstruction by theadministration hasreduced the patronage oftheir members tomotorcycle mechanic

workshops.The unions, after the

endorsement, decoratedthe governor as the Patronof the association.

The event also witnessedthe presentation of awardsto some eminent citizens ofthe state, including theSpecial Adviser to theGovernor on Works andTransport, Engineer SabituAmuda and the StateChairman of the NationalUnion of Road TransportWorkers (NURTW).

Osun ASMON Canvasses Support For Aregbesola’s Re-electionBy BOLANLE BABALOLA

A political group under the All ProgressivesCongress (APC), Asiwaju Movement ofNigeria (ASMON), State of Osun Chapter,

under the chairmanship of Mrs Ariyo OluwayemisiObuseh, has canvassed support for the re-electionof the state governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.

The ASMONchairperson in a chat withOSUN DEFENDER inOsogbo on Tuesday saidno one changes a winningteam, adding thatAregbesola’s superlativeperformance within thelast three years has shownthat he did not gate-crashinto Oke-fia GovernmentHouse.

Obuseh hinted that thegovernor has changed theplight of the state fromgrass to grace.

She said it has becomea thing of joy to say in anypart of Nigeria and

beyond that one hails fromthe State of Osun becausethe governor rolls outunique programmes day-in,day-out.

The ASMONchairperson, who appealedto all progress-lovinginhabitants of Osun tocontribute their quotastowards the return ofAregbesola in the August 9governorship election, disclosed that all themembers of her movementhave been assignedresponsibilities towards there-election of the governor.

She said, parts of the

aims and objectives of themovement are tocomplement the effort ofAsiwaju Bola AhmedTinubu to entrenchmeaningful democraticculture in the act ofgovernance in Nigeria.

Her words: “Thenumerous contributions ofAsiwaju Tinubu have beena pointer to the effect thathe is selfless and he hasbeen prioritizinginstitutionalization of goodgovernance in this country.

“Without AsiwajuTinubu, there would nothave been an opportunityfor the State of Osun toenjoy dividends ofdemocracy that aboundacross the state today.

“Aregbesola, who is aproduct of AsiwajuTinubu’s school of politics, has touched the lives of the

citizenry in various forms.“A case in point is

Osogbo, the state capital, that has shed the toga of aglorified local governmentheadquarters, which hasnow been positivelytransformed throughubiquitous constructionand rehabilitation ofroads.”

According to theASMON boss, it is onrecord that no governmenthas ever, after the creationof the state in 1991,performed superlativelylike Aregbesola, adding that“the record is there for allto see.”

She said, as it is inOsogbo with the provisionof infrastructural facilities,so it is in all the localgovernment council areasacross the state.

THERE are indications that the Peoples DemocraticParty (PDP) may have commenced a well-coordinated move to split the rank of the Independent

National Electoral Commission at its headquarters overthe fate of the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun,Ambassador Taiwo Akeju.

Osun PDP’s Move To Penetrate INEC National Commissioners Fails

Informed sources inAbuja have hinted that theMinister of Police Affairs,Mr. Jelili Adesiyan, PDPgovernorship candidate inthe state, Senator IyiolaOmisore and some PDP

stalwarts had invited five ofthe six nationalcommissioners to a secretmeeting in Abuja last weekwhere the plot to break theranks of the NationalCommissioners was

hatched.The meeting, which

reportedly took place in thehouse of one the PDPleaders, excluded the sixthcommissioner, Professor LaiOlurode, who incidentally isfrom the South-West, fromthe said meeting.

The mandate given to thecommissioners was to moveagainst Professor Jega, should he (Jega) refuses toredeploy the Osun REC by

endlessly putting the issueup as an agenda at meetingsof the commission.

It was reliably gatheredhowever, that two of fiveinvited INEC commissionersdeclined to support themove as, according to them, such move is capable ofcreating confusion anddisrupting order in thecommission.

The three others, whoagreed to play along thewritten script, were said tohave drafted a memo to thateffect, which was submittedat the INEC meeting withJega in attendance lastweek.

The memo, a reliable

source at the meetinginformed OSUNDEFENDER, was tabledbefore Jega, with a covertplan to arm-twist the INECboss into succumbing intoredeploying Akeju from theState of Osun.

It was gathered that theresult however, did notfavour the conveners of themeeting, as Jega disagreedwith the resolutions of thememo, saying his decisionto retain Akeju in Osun wasnot based on personalinterest but that thecommission could not besuccumbing to pressures totransfer its officials based

on unproved allegations.Sources added: “The

memo submitted at themeeting was one of theseries of strategies the PDPat its headquarters wants todeploy to cause disquiet inthe commission ahead ofthe August 8 election.”

It would be recalled thatfew months ago when theINEC Chairman, Jega, visited Osun, the PDP andone other political partieshad asked for the removalof the state REC.

Jega however, turnedthan the call against thebackdrop of the fact that theallegations on which the callwas based remainedunsubstantiated withconcrete evidence.

By FRANCIS EZEDIUNO

THE National Co-ordinator of Peoples’ Welfare League(PWL), Mr. Abiodun Agboola, has stated that availableeconomic indices in the State of Osun have clearly

shown that it has moved up the ladder of development. He also stated that the recent

classification of the state by theNational Bureau of Statistics(NBS) as the seventh largesteconomy in Nigeria and therating by Renaissance Capital,an international financial ratingagency, were indications thatthe state was in the “first rowof developed economies” in thecountry.

The NBS and RenaissanceCapital had in 2012, rated theeconomy of the state as theseventh largest and fastest-growing in Nigeria, while theyalso rated it as the second bestin the country in terms ofGross Domestic Products(GDP) after Lagos.

Agboola made theobservation in Osogbo at a two-day Economic Summitentitled: ‘Orisun Aje 2014:Crux of EconomicDevelopmental Masterplan’,which was put together by theleague to critique economic

activities in the state and theradical development of thestate under Governor RaufAregbesola.

He said the summit affordedstakeholders drawn fromdifferent segments of thesociety, the opportunity toexamine the state’s economycritically.

According to him, the usefulindices emanating from thestate were responsible for thedecision of the league to do athorough critique of theeconomy, with a view tofinding out the veracity of NBS’rating, as well as the impact ofthe economy on the people ofthe state.

In his speech, GovernorAregbesola said no Nigerian hadany reason to be poor, in viewof the enormous resourcesavailable in the country.

He emphasised theimportance of developmentaleconomics, adding that his

administration had performedexcellently in this regard byimpacting on the people of thestate through thoughtful

programmes of his government. He, however, decried the

reduction in federal allocationto the state, noting that federalallocation accruable to the statehad reduced by 40 per cent inrecent times.

Aregbesola’s Achievements HaveMade Campaign Easier - Osun Speaker

SPEAKER of the State of Osun House of Assembly,Honourable Najeem Salaam, has stated that GovernorRauf Aregbesola’s achievements would make the

efforts of the All Progressives Congress (APC) easier inthe course of its electioneering campaign.

Speaking shortly afterbeing inaugurated as theChairman of the APCCampaign Committee in EdeFederal Constituency onMonday alongside others,he said the party has againshown its seriousnessconcerning the re-electionof Aregbesola in the August9 governorship election.

According to him, because some politicians ofthe opposition aredesperate to cause violenceand rig the election, thecommittees would doeverything possible to

sensitise the people asregards the election andallow them to decide freely.

“The only way you cannotice a serious party isthrough its activities andprogrammes. Theinauguration of thecommittees is an indicationthat the APC is a seriousparty that believes instrategising for good resultin anything we are doing.

“We believe in mobilisingthe people, selling ourprogrammes and leavepeople to decide.

“The task is tedious, but

simple because theperformance of thegovernment in terms oftransformation has made itso simple.

“We believe in one man,one vote and thesecommittees will go all out tosensitise the people. Ibelieve that through jointefforts, we will deliver.

“With what we have inOsun, violence and riggingcannot be possible, because you can only rig anelection where you arepopular, at least, to anextent,” he said.

Salaam then stressed thatthe committees might haveto set up various sub-committees to be able to getto all the nooks and cranniesof the state.

Omisore’s Harvest Of Lies And Deceits

For a start only a pathological liarcould claim that OgbeniAregbesola’s programmes in thestate of Osun have no human faceeven as his programmes haveimpacted positively on the lives ofthe people and broughtunprecedented development to thestate. While Aregbesola’sachievements which cut across allsectors in the life of the state arebeing given national applause andglobal acknowledgement bynumerous people who value goodgovernance Omisore on his partrevelled in rubbishing Aregbesola’sachievement in that interview. Thisis quite mischievous!

To claim that Aregbesola’s poli-cies – as progressive and as pro-people as they are – lack humanface is the height of hypocrisy. Andsuch a position not only exposesthe hypocritical nature of Omisorebut it also diminishes his integrity– if he had any. And if we may

ask here; how much of integrity doesOmisore even have? Therefore it’snot totally surprising that he ex-pressed such level of lies in that in-terview. Omisore must be an excep-tional liar not to see anything goodin Aregbesola’s policies when thelatter has succeeded in beatingPDP’s record of achievement justwithin three years of governing thestate even as Omisore’s party –PDP – held power for seven and ahalf years.

Quite unfortunate that Omisore, who now lays a spurious claim topossessing a doctorate degreecouldn’t even articulate very wellthe plans he has for the state. Thisis a big shame. For a man whowants to be governor to lack a clearcut vision of what to do for the stateif he becomes the governor, showshis level of intellectual poverty inspite of his claim of being a PhDholder.

On Omisore’s claim that if he be-comes governor he would give Osunyouths better jobs and better pay

than what the visionary and creativeAregbesola is giving them the ques-tion people are wont to ask is; whatwas he able to do for the youths whenhe was a senator even as he was thechairman of the Senate’s Appropria-tion Committee? In serious climeswhere competence and people’s an-tecedents are the basis of beingelected into political office a charac-ter like Omisore who had a murdercase hanging on his neck couldn’thave even emerged as a senator notto talk of heading a Committee as sen-sitive as Appropriation Committee. His nauseating fraudulent entry intothe Senate plus his ridiculous emer-gence as chairman Senate Commit-tee on Appropriation could only hap-pen in Nigeria being a country of any-thing goes.

The same lies Omisore fed the pub-lic in that interview he repeated againduring the launch of his governorshipcampaign in Osogbo, the state capi-tal recently. But quite important tostate it again as we have alwaysmaintained in this medium that

Omisore has a right to contest forthe number one seat of Osun. Notonly does he has the right to con-test, he also has the right of expres-sion. He is free to rubbishAregbesola’s achievements as helikes. One thing is however clear;no matter the level of contemptu-ous talk against the honey, it will re-main sweet still. Whatever he likeslet him continue to say againstAregbesola, he cannot succeed inrubbishing Ogbeni’s good workwhich is being globally applauded ev-eryday.

As election is around the cornerAregbesola’s work will continue tocampaign for him. He has done welland the people of Osun are notready to replace him in the comingelection with a visionless desperadowho has nothing to offer the statesave negative politics. Until Augustthis year when the people will speakwith their voting power and returnthe man who has turned Osunaround within three years who saysOmisore should not continue to livein fool’s paradise?

Above all the points earlierraised, the name of the road inquestion has not changed! Thisis quite deserving of the lateChief Obafemi Awolowo wholoved his people and societyto a fault and whose love forthem are forever undying.

Surely, the legacies ofAwolowo should be undying.Thank God then that the roadconstruction efforts of theincumbent Aregbesolaadministration are of such asort that is specially designedto last for several decades. Yes!We know and appreciate thefact that nothing lasts forever.

Yet the era of putting up ofliabilities and shoddy death-traps in the name of roadbuilding is gone forever. Thewaste, risks and liabilitiesincurred by our ousted captorsthrough these pseudo-roads areof immeasurable gravity.Today, we stand a better stead

as we are having in place farbetter roads which servemotorists, commuters andvehicles with greaterconvenience and offer themlengthier durability.

It is on the note of theforegoing that I make a case forputting in place a statue of thelate sage at some convenientand appropriate junctionwithin the city. In my ownopinion, such points are any

of the following: Theroundabout marking the OmoWest / West Bypass / AdesojiAderemi Exit Junction at theprecincts of the Osogbo CityStadium; the roundabout at thepopular Onisekere Junction;the junction at the famousIgbonna Market; or still, theOld Garage roundabout.

The overall effect of thismeasure would be to cementand concretize the

immortalization of thedeparted hero, who stood firmand impacted solidly on thedevelopment of the South-West especially in the area ofgood road network.

The likes of this suggestedstatue are not far-fetched. Incities of the South-West –Lagos and Ibadan, for example, street junctions are repletewith similar features. I amaware of the enormity of the

cost, but no cost is too dear tocommit to the memory of theworthy son and father of nentire nation. In Osogbo, thestatue of the late Chief BolaIge erected in front of the BolaIge House (Governor’s Office)at the State of Osun Secretariatat Abere is a miniature exampleof the suggested masterpiece. The Ori Olokun Statue at thefamous Mayfair Roundaboutin Ile-Ife, commissioned last

year by the administration ofOgbeni Rauf Aregbesola isanother example of mysuggested work of arts.

By the erection of thiseffigy, we shall be informingthe world; the incominggeneration inclusive of thenoble deeds of the departedsouls which are indelible. Also,we shall be preserving thelegacies of the dead as well asinculcating the virtuesenshrined in the ethos ofOmoluabi, currentlychampioned by theGovernment Unusual ofOgbeni Aregbesola. For theaesthetic benefit of the living,we shall be beautifying ourenvironment the more by sodoing. The effigy of Awolowois a missing necessity on thestreets of our state capital, soit is high time we made roomfor one of it.

I appreciate the listeningposture of the Rauf Aregbesolaadministration in the State ofOsun; just as I look forwardto the timely publication ofthis opinion of mine for itsdeserved timely response.Thanks. Osun a dara o!

Vision 2020: What It Should Be

•JONATHAN

THE Standard Dictionary ofEnglish Language defines“Vision”, inter-alia as “an

inspired revelation, ability to anticipateand make provision for future events.”This means that a vision refers to eventsstill to happen in the future. In otherwords, a good leader must constantlybe concerned with the future. Peoplewant to know about their future becausethey wish to know how to react to theirpresent circumstances. With whatmeasure of care, courage, prudenceand determination they should confrontthe onrush events. In other words, ifthey could only know the future, whatmust they try to do get there.

There is no doubt that Nigeria needsa vision as distinct from the vacuousslogans of greatness and patriotism.Unfortunately, the contemporarydiscourse is on election: who shall bethe presidential candidate and fromwhich zone? Which geopolitical zoneshould produce the vice-president?Nobody seems to bother about whatNigeria herself should look like in 2020or when the mandate of the currentgovernment expires. Sad, very sadindeed!.

There are critical areas thegovernment should pay attentionbetween now and 2020, so that Nigeriamay becomes a pride of all. First andforemost, there is the need for a nationalre-awakening to solve the fundamentalproblems of political restructuring andregional autonomy to serve as animpetus to release the creative energyof the Nigerian people.

Government must pay attention to theproblem of educationally disadvantagedareas. These areas should seize theopportunity of Universal BasicEducation (UBE) with both hands.

To revolutionise agriculture, thereshould be efficient distribution andstorage system, correct prices asincentives to farmers and theimplementation stage of our agriculturalpolicy must be devoid of unduepoliticisation, which usually rewardgrowth. Nigeria, by Year 2020, shouldusher in an era of abundant food securityfor all to achieve a complete banishmentof hunger. Agriculture must bemodernised and mechanised.

Preventive and curative healthservices must be available at affordablecost to the citizenry. By 2020, Nigeriashould have put behind the era of ourcitizens going abroad for medical check-ups at exorbitant costs. This can onlybe attainable if our hospitals are well-equipped with the correct amount ofpersonnel to enable the citizens enjoygood physical, mental and spiritualhealth.

There is need for rapidindustrialization. Nigeria of Year 2020should have vastly explored optionsopen to investors and acquisitions ofmachines and adaptations of some to

local conditions. Both the governmentand the industrial sector shouldrecognise themselves as partners inprogress to create the required mutualtrust, dialogue, respect and confidence.

By 2020, Nigeria must have banishedthe era of high interest rates, high rateof inflation, low returns on investment, which are impediments to small-scaleindustrial development. Our petroleumpolicy must take due cognizance of ourimmediate external environment.

By Year 2020, Nigeria should havefully embraced the information age asfar as communication is concerned, totake full advantage of globalization.

The requirements of sustainableenvironment demands, inter-alia, thatwe must control our population, controlour penchant for conspicuousconsumption, and tackle the problemof deforestation.

By Year 2020, Nigeria should haveachieved total environmental friendlinessor “going green”. This policy should bepursued with abiding faith.

By Year 2020, Nigeria should havedone away with some aspects of ourculture on inheritance and widowhood, especially as it relates to the inheritanceof a widow by the relations of the deadhusband.

We must encourage qualitative notquantitative population and produceland use maps to control populationspread into areas reserved for the most

comparative advantage uses.On the issues of acquisition of

technology, power and technologytransfer, Nigeria of Year 2020 shouldbe a nation that recognise self-ability byourselves, repose in and build amodicum of confidence within our ownsystem as a prelude to the reduction ofdependence on foreign systems andtechnology.

Our revenue allocation formulashould be based on the concept of manas unit of development, rather thangeographical area.

Nigeria of Year 2020 should begoverned by rule of law. A society notruled by law will have a rule of man orof force, and its resulting uncertainties. We should put behind the era of religiousfanaticism and violence and usher in adesired era of religious harmony, understanding and co-existence. Weshould be thinking constructively asviolence is negative thinking thatdebilitates and retards progress towardsconstructive planning.

By Year 2020, all Nigerians shouldhave equal access to the vast expanseof Nigeria’s land and its bounteousnatural resources for the developmentof themselves and the nation. Thereshould be decent and affordable shelterfor all. Nigeria should by then have putbehind the era of most of her citizensliving in houses, which the late sage,Obafemi Awolowo said, were not evensuitable “for modern poultry or piggery!”

Our decadent infrastructure must be

restored. By the Year 2020, let thenation flow with clean water for all if itcannot literally flow with milk and honey. We should have put behind the era oferratic power supply and usher in theera of uninterrupted power supply. Ourroads and inland waterways should haveceased to be death traps.

By Year 2020, Nigeria should be afully democratic country with electionrigging outlawed and dissent toleratedas hallmark of representativedemocracy, support for popularorganisations of the people with thepolice and the military being in theforefront of the struggle for democracyand supporting democratic elections asthe basis for selecting citizens intopolitical offices.

Our police, judiciary and the prisonsystem need “drastic reforms” (apologyto Wole SoyinYear 2020, corruptionshould have been completely banishedfrom all aspects of our national life.Nigeria should no longer be on the listof Transparency International as acorrupt country, talkless of being themost corrupt country on earth!.

By Year 2020, Nigerians should haveput behind ethnic loyalties, nepotism andbecome one united countrypassionately committed to the unity ofthe country.

By Year 2020 latest, there should befull employment for all willing and able-bodied men and women and socialinsurance for the aged and the disabled.By then, we should have tackledeffectively the problem of ignorance, disease and poverty which ravage theland. Nigeria should have no businesswith poverty taking into considerationour bounteous natural resources andpower of the intellect.

By Year 2020, Nigeria should brookno mediocrity in any aspect of her publiclife. We should ensure good governancewith the successful interplay of thefollowing areas: responsive executive,an alert legislature, an independentjudiciary, a free press and a discerningcitizenry. There must be probity inpublic life and absolute devotion anddedication to the cause and welfare ofthe masses of the people.

By Year 2020 latest, Nigeria musthave banished economic dependence, put behind debt burden and restore intheir place self- reliance; aneconomically self-reliant anddependable nation, to whom all othercountries of Africa can look for succourand merited leadership; a nationgoverned by a proper and wellfashioned constitution operated by acrop of leaders that are able, accountable committed, democratic, fearless, humane, patriotic, transparentand visionary.

Aregbesola’s Innovative Governance:Solution To Nigeria’s Many Problems

HE promised in 2006: “Within thefirst hundred days of ourassumption of office, we will

engage 20,000 youths. We will give themmeans by which they can maintain theirsubsistence. Our youths will not roam thestreets again when we become thegovernor of our state”.

I remember vividly. It was in December2006, Engineer Rauf Aregbesola; as hewas referred to then was addressing aquite overwhelming mammoth of people ofIkirun town, State of Osun. He made anumber of promises- from agriculture toinfrastructure, education, security, commerce, revenue generation, and all.But as he started to speak on Osunyouths, one could easily read a changedemotion in his voice and face.

He expressed a strong and barelycontrollable emotion. He wondered whyNigeria’s future- the youths could be sounfortunate. He queried why successivegovernments would not see the need tostem insecurity through minimalengagement of the youths. He told thegathering then that two advantages arederivable when a government invests inthe youths- peace and security, as well aseconomic viability and growth.

Between 2007 and now, seven yearshave gone into history. However, twomajor incidents attract due reflections. Bythe time Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola wasmaking that promise in Ikirun and severalother places across the state, there wereno striking records of insurgencies inNigeria. Apart from the Niger Deltamilitant groups, whose activities werecontained within oil palavers and resourcecontrol questions, Nigeria was not sodivided as it is getting today. We did nothave Boko Haram insurgents; at leasttheir activities had not come to the fore asit has today.

Ogbeni probably knew that the risingnumber of hopeless youths in thecountry; particularly in the northernregion was reaching alarming records, sohe made it prime in his electioneeringdiscussions that Osun youths will notroam the streets, lest their idle handsbecame the devil’s workshop.

When he was going all over the places, telling the world that 20,000 Nigerians willget something doing to fetch money forthemselves every month, the PDP said itwas mare fluke. “Bawo lo se fe se e” “Howwould he achieve that. Where would heget the money to pay them?, they jested. But Aregbesola had answers to theirdoubts. Innovation is the answer.

Innovation, is described as theapplication of better solutions that meetnew requirements in articulated needs. And it takes deep reflections, determination for positive change, as wellas experience over certain challenges forsolutions to come. To Rauf, it wasapparent when in 2005 he was drawing hisaction plans on how he intended togovern Osun. He actually completeddrafts of his six-point integral action plansabout three years before the 2007elections.

At a time shortly before the 2007elections, he was discussing with us aftera rigorous political campaign. He askedwhether anybody was giving the thenunfolding situation in the country anyserious thought; the fact that what he andhis contemporaries enjoyed in term ofyouth development in the early seventieswere nowhere again in Nigeria. “I fear thatunless we re-cook the books of youthdevelopment in our land, our future isvery bleak”, He told us as he tutored onwhy OYES must be the first majorinitiative of his government.

Today, the situation pays off for theState of Osun. Aregbesola has fulfilled thepromise of youth engagement twicewithin one term !!! Two sets of 20,000Osun youths, who hitherto were just

roaming the streets for close to a decadeunder PDP have been engaged underAregbesola’s government. This isaccomplished through what experts calleffective idea that is readily availableto governments and society. This idea-OYES- is original and, as a consequence, new in governance. It breaks into themarket or society of empowerment. AndOsun government and the people arereally reaping well from the scheme. How?

Between 2011 and now, N9 billion hasbeen spent on youth empowermentscheme in Osun. That includes themonthly allowances for beneficiaries, theirkits and other logistics. The beneficiariesare residents in the state. So they spendtheir little income within Osun. They buyfood, purchase drinking water, ride on‘Korope’ and ‘Okada’, buy clothing andall. The kits they put on were sewn byOsun tailors. It is even interesting to notethat the boots they wear weremanufactured in Osogbo- in the leatherwork and footwear unit of IndustrialDevelopment Centre IDC; located aroundSt. Charles Grammar School area ofOsogbo. IDC is a Federal Governmentfacility that had gone moribund beforeAregbesola resuscitated it. Today, thecentre is a skill-acquisition centre, whereanybody can go to learn a skill. A visit tothe place is charming to any imagination.

The N9 billion so far spent on theAregbesola youth empowerment schemecould have been ‘appropriated’ by hiscronies. Instead of spending such hugemoney on Osun youths in three years, hecould have made himself and a few of his;quite richer under any guise. But whatwould have become of the 40,000 Osunyouths who today pray for this Ogbeni? Most probably, they would have formedanother version of insurgents. Theywould have gone deep; intimidating thepeople of Osun. Yes. They would;because just before God answeredprayers of Osun, situation had goneberserk; such that some miscreants havecultivated the habit of collecting whatthey tagged: “security money” on weeklybasis. They used to harass ware owners

along MDS area and Akindeko axis ofOsogbo. Business owners along theseareas must part with some money to suchmiscreant youths every Friday or they risklosing their goods. Osun was going thatbad just before Aregbesola came onboard. And God forbid that suchinnovation in governance of Aregbesolawas not in place to nip that uglydevelopment in the bud; Osun wouldprobably have had to contend with atleast about forty thousand trouble makingyouths across the state. Banks, wouldhave closed down like it is happening inOffa. And for the ones in operation, customers would have been “politely”told that they are closing down at 12noon, simply because of the fear ofburglary from some Nigerian youths ofthat space.

The good news in Osun is that the N9billion and such monies are “permanentlytrapped”, circulating within the Osuneconomy. Such monies circulate withinthe hands of Osun people. It is notconcentrated in the hands of a few. SoAregbesola would not need to ache fromthe truth that could come from any bank, whether World Bank or otherwise thatNigerians within the Osun space are poor.I giggled as our President Goodluck EbeleJonathan attempted to respond to thereality of the fact as contained in a WorldBank Report that Nigeria is one of the fivepoorest countries of the world. Twothings attracts my reflections in Dr.Jonathan’s responses- that he agrees tothe fact that his transformation agendapaid off for some of his cronies such thatNigeria’s wealth is concentrated in thehands of a few. “Our problem is notpoverty, our problem is redistribution ofwealth”, said Mr. president.

“Aliko Dangote was recently classifiedamong the 25 richest people in the world...If you talk about ownership of privatejets, Nigeria will be among the first 10countries, yet they are saying that Nigeriais among the five poorest countries.

“Probably wealth is concentrated invery few hands and a number of peopledo not have access to it and that is whymy administration is committed in terms offinancial inclusiveness and we areworking very hard to achieve this”

Another fact that worries anybody inMr President’s responses is the fact thatless than one year to the end of his six-year rule as Nigeria’s president, he stillsays he is working hard to redistributeNigeria’s wealth which; by virtue of histransformation agenda has been stackedin the hands of a few. Yet, Mr. Presidentflaunts this anomaly by his reference toDangote and other few Nigerians;including Mr President himself, whoown several private jets as being amongthe top ten jet owners of the world.

What President Jonathan needs do atthis crucial point in time is to yield theadvise of the World Bank that the Osunyouth empowerment initiative bereplicated to forestall youth restivenessand promote wealth creation in thecountry. President Jonathan needs to beinnovative in governing Nigeria. Heshould search no further for way out ofmost of the country’s challenges. Heshould check his ‘Shokoto’ (pair oftrousers) instead of traveling to‘Sokoto’ in search of solutions toNigeria’s challenges. The only‘Shokoto’ so far acknowledged by anythird party is found on Aregbesola.Okonjo-Iweala said it, and so said theWorld Bank- that Aregbesola has theinnovations to good government andgovernance in Nigeria.

DR. NGOZI OKONJO IWEALA : onAregbesola’s good governance, June2013.

“You have demonstrated that goodgovernance is possible with yourprogrammes. You have demonstratedthat your youth development ispossible. Your programmes so far havedemonstrated that you are a goodexample of good government andgovernance.”

United States Consul-General,Jefferey Hawkins- Saturday November9, 2013

“The economic, social andinfrastructural renewal of Osun Stateunder Governor Aregbesola in the lastfew years of being at the saddle ofleadership must be applauded. Thegovernment’s efforts in reformationdevelopment in all facets cannot beglossed over.

OSUN DEFENDER Thursday, May 8, 201412 FOR THE RECORDS

Address Delivered By The Governor Of The State Of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, As Re-cipient Of The ‘Most Innovative Nigerian Governor In First Term Award’ Organised By TheBusinessworld Newspaper, Held At Zenababs Hotel And Resort, Ijebu-Jesha Road, Ilesa, OnSaturday May 3, 2014.

Willing And Ready To Do MoreProtocols,

I am filled with unspeakable joy andindescribable happiness as I gatherwith all of you who have come to

rejoice with me on this memorableoccasion of my being graciouslydecorated as the Most InnovativeNigerian Governor in First Term bythe well-regarded BusinessWorldNewspaper.

May I most humbly express myappreciation to the forward-lookingmanagement and percipient EditorialBoard of BusinessWorld newspaper forfreely choosing to confer on me thisprecious award.

I am enormously grateful to you forcarefully monitoring the consistentimplementation of our people-orientedpolicies and for the encouragement youare giving to our administration throughthis award.

I sincerely dedicate the award to allthe supportive people of the State ofOsun who from the very beginningnever doubted my competence andability to productively manage theirresources and effectively transformtheir lives.

What BusinessWorld isacknowledging and identifying withtoday are the unmistakable results ofthe innovative governance which myadministration has brought to bear inour drive towards putting our state andpeople irreversibly on the path ofeconomic abundance and multifariouspeople-centred development.

What we have done in Osun sincewe assumed office is what anyoneentrusted with power is unavoidablyexpected to do. We saw manifold,human-made socio-economic andpolitical problems eroding the humandignity of our people and we respondedwith the requisite solutions.

I must, however, note that the uniquething about our obligatory interventionis its unprecedented, markedlyinnovative and unconventional nature. In its philosophical outlook andunderlining framework, the blueprint ofour administration is decidedly andunalterably people-centred.

We had clearly realised even beforewe took office that viable, sustainabledevelopment would be a sorelydispiriting mirage if it is notcomprehensively people-focused andintensely innovative. Such people-regarding governance, I am confidentto aver, is the efficacious balm withwhich we have healed Osun of itsmany avoidable socio-economic andpolitical disorders. And this happenedjust within a single term of our being inoffice.

To be precise, the innovation wehave engendered in purposefullytranslating our practicable vision ofdevelopment into enduringly beneficialreality is evident in the public educationsystem of the state.

It is there in the tablet computer(Opon-Imo) we distributed to our HighSchool students; it is there in ourElementary School Feeding and HealthProgramme (O’MEALS); it is there inthe completion of 2,000 new modernclassrooms in 39 schools; it is there inthe free school uniforms given to allpublic school students; and the in the

smart biometric ID cards soon to bedistributed to the students, amongmany others.

For us, education is number onepriority. It is the foundation of thedevelopment we earnestly work for; itis our passport to that future ofenduring socio-economic greatness. This explains why we feel no qualminvesting in it, for we are convinced, asConfucius was, that ‘no nation goesbankrupt educating its people’.

The fruits of our innovativegovernance are evident in our responseto the stinging social malaise that isyouth unemployment. That response, which is now a model favoured andrecommended by the World Bank, hasenabled us to positively engage 40,000active youths in decent endeavours.

It must be noted that 20,000 of themwere first salvaged from theunemployment lane within the first 100days of our assuming office throughthe Osun Youth Empowerment Scheme(O’YES). In other numerous areasincluding agriculture, we have createddecent jobs for our youths.

To seek development of any kindwithout the organised involvement ofyouths is akin to the futile attempt ofclimbing a tree from the top. Theloaded energy, boundless creativity, andvast competences of our youths needto be systematically tapped for the

overall good of our country. That is thepath Osun has found; and it is walkingit steadfastly.

I must also let you know that inagriculture we have broken newgrounds. In ways that have neverhappened in the history of Osun, wehave provided huge financial supportfor our farmers. We are empoweringthem towards massive food productionand food security. We believe stronglythat importing food that we can growhere does not make any economicsense.

Similarly, we are under no illusionthat agriculture also provides a viablesolution to the scourge ofunemployment problem. We do knowfor certain that agricultural economythat is grounded in food productioncannot fail. Thus, we are revamping theold farm estates across the state andare encouraging immense investmentsin farming and agro-businesses.

Moreover, there is solid proof ofinnovation in our rehabilitation, reconstruction and construction ofrural, local, intra-city, and inter-stateroads. Good road infrastructure will notonly enhance human living, it willequally boost trade and commercialactivities. We have spent billions ofnaira in ensuring that roads in Osun donot serve as death traps but greatlyenhance socio-economic activities for

the well-being of our people. In the colossal increase we have

achieved in our monthly InternallyGenerated Revenue – which is nowN1.6 billion, in contrast to the N300million we met –, we have shown thatinnovative governance is significant forprogress. We achieved this feat withoutany increase in tax. We are working toswell this figure to N5 billion.

We are not satisfied with thecontinuous dependence on FederalAllocations and its horrendous vagariesand limiting vacillations. In spite ofOsun’s position as the 34th on theFederal Allocation ladder, we haveshown that with creativity, innovationand unbending fidelity to prudencegreater favourable developmentalstrides can be actualised. Thus, arecent report put Osun’s economy asthe seventh largest in Nigeria.

I must not fail to mention that ourAgba Osun (Osun Elders) WelfareScheme is one other remarkableachievement of our Administration. This social welfare scheme targets thevulnerable elderly citizens of the state. These elderly citizens are givenN10,000 monthly in addition to the freehealth programme specially providedfor them. About N17 million is spentmonthly to keep this programme going.Generally, our healthcare delivery to ourpeople has greatly improved.

Distinguished audience, the harvestsof good governance being enjoyed inOsun is not accidental. It is madepossible through vision, passion, andinnovation. That we could do much inour first term attests to the fact that ourgoal is the development of our people.

The point must be made that whetheras leaders in their first or second termof office, there is really no excuse fornon-performance. There is no reasonwhy elected officials should not addvalue and meaning to the lives of theelectorate in any term of office.

I am seeking re-election not becauseI want to rest from all that has beendone in my first term of office. If myfirst term has been defined byinvaluable works, my second term ofoffice will be characterised by moreworks for the overall good of morenumber of our people.

Second term of office is no time torest; it is another opportunity to beatthe record set in human development inthe first term of office. The work hereis not yet finished. I am ready to domore, even breaking newerdevelopmental grounds.

I believe, as the virologist, JonasSalk, says, ‘The greatest reward fordoing is the opportunity to do more’. Iam willing and ready to do more forOsun. My inspired and inspiringmessage for my people is this: Greaterthings than you have seen under mywatch will spring forth in my secondterm of office.

I should like to thank theBusinessWorld Newspaper again fortheir good gesture and encouragement.I will do more in service to humanity tojustify the confidence you generouslyrepose in me.

I thank you all for your cordialaudience.

Nigeria’s govern-ment acting likechildren - saysWole Soyinka

The search formore than 200 girlsin Nigeria is now“beyond the capac-ity” of the govern-ment and needs in-ternational support,Nigerian authorWole Soyinka told CNN’sChristiane Amanpour on Tuesday.

“This is a government which is notonly in denial mentally, but in de-nial about certain obvious steps totake,” Soyinka, a Nobel laureatewho is often referred to as the con-science of his nation, toldAmanpour.

“It’s one of those rather child-likesituations that if you shut your eyes,if you don’t exhibit the tactile evi-dence of the missing humanity here, that somehow the problem will goaway.”

It is not just “a Nigerian problem,”he said.

“I’m calling for the internationalcommunity, the United Nations –this is a problem. This is a globalproblem. And a foothold is beingvery deeply entrenched in West Af-rica.”

The search for the girls, who werekidnapped by the Boko Haram ter-rorist group on April 14, has seenlittle progress.

The issue, Soyinka said, has beenaddressed “very late and very cur-sorily.”

Amanpour had scheduled a live in-terview with Nigerian InformationMinister Labaran Maku on Tuesday;Maku failed to show up in time forthe inter

Soyinka

A man claiming to be Boko Haramleader Abubakar Shekau said in anewly released video "I abductedyour girls. I will sell them in the mar-ket, by Allah.”

Soyinka referred to Shekau’s videoas a “charade” and “gleeful obscen-ity.”

The U.S. said on Tuesday that ithad offered, and President GoodluckJonathan had accepted, an offer todiscuss American aid in finding thegirls.

“President Jonathanshould have asked for itfrom the very beginning,”Soyinka said. “I don’t be-lieve in false pride.”

Why, Amanpour asked, does Soyinka believeJonathan is in denial?

“It’s not only he. It’s the advisersaround him. It’s a certain section ofthe nation, some of whom enjoy forvarious reasons a nation in a state ofchaos. They profit by it, and in factsome of the, are guilty of provokingthe situation.”

“The person who has no excuse isthe president of the nation.”

The problem, he said, has been fes-tering for years.

“There have been numerous inci-dents like this,” he told Amanpour; the2011 Boko Haram bombing of a UnitedNations compound in Abuja and ex-tremist unrest over a 2002 beauty pag-eant being just two examples.

“The pinpricks you’ve seen all overthe world are consolidating into a situ-ation of internal war – insurrection bythis group.”

One need only look at the history ofAlgeria or the Taliban’s rule in Af-ghanistan to understand what is hap-pening, he said.

“Let’s not beat around the bush. We’re dealing with a monstrosity. We’re dealing with an affliction thelikes of which the nation has never en-countered.”

The response must be rapid, he said.

“Abduction, terrorism, suicidebombing – these are very difficult situ-ations to deal with. But they are notunique.”

“Where it will end, I do not know. But one thing is certain: The presidentand his government cannot sleep easyafter what has happened to Nigeria.”
