statement issued andsigned by its Director ofPublicity, Research andStrategy, Barrister KunleOyatomi, claimed thatintelligence report from

within the PDP has it thatthe attack would commenceat the party secretariatalong Gbongan/Ibadanroad.

According to the partyspokesman, the same

strategy was used by thePDP in 2007, whenAregbesola Campaign Officewas attacked by some PDPhoodlums, who shot at thebuilding and someindividuals including theformer Editor of OSUNDEFENDER, Mr Kola Olabisiwho is now the ManagingEditor.

“This is a similar strategy

used by the PDP in 2007,when it attacked OranmiyanHouse, the campaignheadquarters ofAregbesola, shooting itsway into the premises andcreating mayhem that leftseveral people injured,”Oyatomi satated

The state APC therefore, called the people andsecurity agents to call on

the PDP to desist from itsfamiliar path of violence.

“The party is therefore, calling on all citizens ofgoodwill within and outsidethe State of Osun, as well assecurity agents to prevail onthe PDP that violence is notpart of democracy.

“Osun has been peacefulsince 2010, whenAregbesola took over andthe APC government isdetermined to keep itpeaceful.”

NBA Laments Absence OfFederal Court Of Appeal In Osun

THE Osogbo branch of the Nigeria Bar Association(NBA) has expressed worry over the absence of adivision of the Federal Court of Appeal in the State

of Osun.Addressing a press

conference as part of theactivities commemorating2014 Bar Week of the NBA,Osogbo branch, thechairman of the planningcommittee, Mr. GbadamosiAdesina and member,General Council of the Bar,last weekend in Osogboobserved that the absenceof a Federal Court of Appealin the state hinders thepromotion of lawyers toattain Senior Advocate ofNigeria (SAN) status.

He, therefore appealed tothe Chief Justice of Nigerianto facilitate the creation of adivision of an Appeal Courtin the state, contending thatsuch development wascapable of enhancing theperformance of legalpractitioners.

According to Adesina:“The nearest Courts of

Appeal to the state are inAkure and Ibadan and allappeal cases by lawyers inthe state are either filed inAkure or Ibadan”.

While calling for theseparation of the office ofthe Attorney General fromthat of the Commissioner forJustice, he maintained thatsuch approachwould promote quickdispensation of justice inthe country and givesvalues to the two offices.

“The law practice inNigeria will be more efficient,if the office of the AttorneyGeneral is separated fromthat of the Commissioner forJustice, and this will alsoallow independence injudiciary.

The office of the AttorneyGeneral is higher than thatof the Commissioner forJustice,” Adesina remarked.

Aregbesola ‘ll Win August 9 ElectionConvincingly - OYT

By KAZEEM MOHAMMED

THE lawmaker representing AyedaadeConstituency in the State of Osun House ofAssembly, Honourable Yemi Taiwo, has stated

that the state governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, stands a better chance of winning the August 9governorship election in the state convincingly.

He stated this during achat with OSUNDEFENDER recently inOsogbo, saying, thegovernor has preparedenough ground for his re-election through hisd e v e l o p m e n t a lprogrammes and policies.

According to him, thePeoples Democratic Party(PDP) and his candidate,Iyiola Omisore are onlyboasting that they will takeover without anything tojustify it.

“They don’t haveanything to justify whythey should be voted intopower. They are likeprodigal sons of Osun.

“When Iyiola Omisorewas the deputy governor,he made no meaningfulcontribution to thesuccess of thatadministration, exceptfighting his boss, Chief BisiAkande.

“Also, throughout hisstay in the senate, he wasunable to achieveanything, despite the factthat he chaired theAppropriation Committeeof the Senate, the mostpowerful committee forthat matter.

“There is no place forPDP again in Osun. Theyhave been given chance inthe past and they have

failed us completely,” thelawmaker stressed.

Taiwo added that federalpower can never work inOsun, as the people haveseen the performances ofAregbesola in all sectors ofgovernance.

The lawmaker addedthat the people of the stateare aware that the Ministerfor Police Affairs, Jelili

Adesiyan was appointed torig the election, saying thatis why he has beenboasting to use the policeagainst APC members.

He stressed that thiswould not work, as thepeople of Osun want thecurrent spate ofd e v e l o p m e n t a lprogrammes and policiesto continue.

Reject Jeun S'iku! Protect your votes

Continued from pg1 threatening fire against APC members.Going by their antecedent violence andrigging are their stock-in-trade. Andsince there is no hope for them ofwinning the coming election through'One man One vote' then their hopelies in repeating what they know howto do best.

Another way through which the PDP ishoping to claim victory is by throwingmoney and other valuable gifts out toentice voters to sell their votes. In thisregard the handwriting had for longappeared on the wall. With the distribu-tion of kerosene to their members andsome members of the public whichstarted last year their journey to enticevoters with the aim of buying theirvotes started.

This stratagem rather than strategy, being viciously employed by the PDPin the state of Osun, is what we see as'jeun s'iku' should citizens get swayedby it. 'Jeun s'iku' literally means 'eatand die' or 'eat the food that will leadyou to your grave'. The money andother forms of gift which the PDP andIyiola Omisore rely on to buy citizens'votes are nothing but 'Greek gift' and'blood money' and collecting them todo their biding means doing so at one'speril. It simply means sending our stateback to the pre-Aregbesola era; back-

water of development. May God forbid!

But it's not enough to pray to God toforbid evil things. We the citizens mustalso not use our own hands to bring evilthings on our heads. To collect PDP'sblood money to sell our conscience inthe coming election will be tantamountto 'jeun s'iku' the consequence of whichwill be dire for our state. Of course thecitizens can collect the gift of money andother gifts the PDP is ready to offerthem but they must not do so to do theirbidding. The votes in the coming elec-tion are for Ogbeni Aregbesola who hasraised the bar of good and responsiblegovernance in the state and should nevergo to any other party let alone the PDP.

The PDP and Iyiola Omisore are free togo about to throw carrot to the people intheir desperation to capture the con-science of voters but never should thevoters allow their conscience to becaptured by these unscrupulous elementswho have nothing to offer our state. The PDP has been in power for close toeight years here without any positivething to show for it. All it had to showfor its eight years of misrule are purelynegative; violence, hunger, unemploy-ment, collapsed school system, badroads and general under-developmentacross the state. party's candidate,'Mr. Money miss road' himself, he toohad nothing positive to show for repre-senting the state at the highest legislativebody of this country even as he held a

juicy position in the Senate, beingChairman Appropriation Committee forfour years.Rather than serving the people andmade positive impact in their lives hewas only there to serve his own pocket. So in what way are they - both the PDPand Omisore - going to effect anymeaningful change in the life of the stateas they are shouting around? We know that the virtuous and respon-sible citizens of our state who haveenjoyed dividends of democracy inunprecedented term under the able andvisionary leadership of OgbeniAregbesola will not waste their votes. We are sure they are notgoing to sell their conscience. We be-lieve fervently that their votes will befor Aregbesola as they are not ready to'jeun s'iku'. However, it's one thing tovote, the next important task beforethem come election day after voting isfor them to protect their votes.

Our people must guard their votesjealously so that these visionless ele-ments who rely on vote stealing likethey did in 2007 and who have nothingto offer the state and its people don'tsucceed in their fraudulent and evilplans. For them not to succeed the ballis in the court of the people. Our re-sponsibilities are clear; to vote and toprotect our votes. These are what wemust do to ensure the return of theAregbesola-led progressive governmentthat has done so well for our state.

The Dr Okonjo-Iweala Challenge

CO-ORDINATING Ministerof the Nigerian economyand the Minister of

Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iwealagave a challenge to stategovernors recently at aconvocation lecture at BabcockUniversity, Ilisan-Remo in OgunState.

At the convocation when shewas honoured with a doctoratedegree along with some otherdistinguished Nigerians, theminister made bare the amount ofrevenue collected by statesespecially, the ten which receivedthe highest revenue from thefederally-collected nationalrevenue.

According to the minister,Akwa-Ibom State, an oil-producing state tops the list, followed by Rivers, Delta,Bayelsa, Lagos, Kano, Katsina,Oyo and Kaduna. Borno, a NorthEastern state is the tenth.

The minister’s exposure wasnot only timely but revealing. Thegood thing about the expose isthat it helps the citizens to beaware of how much states weregetting. It now affords citizensthe ability to know how much thestates are getting and howefficient the resources are beingdeployed. Interestingly, most oil-producing states are ruled by thePeoples Democratic Party.Amongst the ten are Lagos andBorno States controlled by theAll Progressives Congress(APC). Lagos by every standardis the state where ingenuity isdeployed to increase internally-generated revenue (IGR).

The Federal Government thattakes more than fifty percent ofthe revenue should be able toshow the citizenry how best it hasused revenue collected. Thetragedy of the Nigerianfederation is the fact that by themisadventure of militaryinterregnum in our politics, ourrevenue is centrally-collectedand distributed unevenly. Thisunfortunate situation stemmedfrom the fact that the militarystrongly operated on thehierarchically structured system, which did not allow the stategovernors, who weresubordinates to the Commander-in-Chief to disobey any order. This was transferred to thecivilian dispensation and byextension, the Constitution leftbehind by the military.

From the reality on ground, itis no longer fashionable orrealistic for states to wait till theend of the month to get the paltrysum coming in the form ofrevenue allocation. Since July2013, the revenue due to stateshas reduced by forty percent withno tangible reasons adduced forit. The only reason offered by thefederal authority is that oil

production has been disturbedthrough the activities of oilvandals. The security operativesare under the care of the FederalGovernment coupled with thefact that Nigerians were made tounderstand that some militantkingpins were recruited by theFederal Government to police theoil installations.

It is my humble opinion that theNational Conference going on inAbuja should be able to whittledown the powers of the nationalgovernment and by extension, reduce the money allocated tothe centre. This will undoubtedly, afford the states the opportunityto do well in the generation ofrevenue locally.

People reside in the states andthe local governments, where theneeds of the people are located. The current situation givesunpopular politicians at the statesto hibernate in Abuja, only tocause problem to the politicianson ground in their respectivestates. Their sojourn in Abujaalso gives them unfettered accessto the Presidency, which theyleverage on. Democracy is all

about the people. The bestcandidate may not win but themost popular does. Our electedleaders should be those whodeserve to be at the top. If theyare, then they would beresponsive and accountable. Untilthat is done, we shall as a nation, continue to move in the wrongdirection.

The Boko Haram insurgencyhas really exposed a lot of things. The military to whom muchbudgetary allocation is givenyearly really gave themselves outwith the terror of Shekau and hisband of blood-thirsty BokoHaram.

If the military were adequatelyand appropriately equipped andmotivated as we were made tobelieve, the Boko Haraminsurgency would not have takenthem by surprise. Granted thefact that terrorism is anunconventional war and differentand obnoxious tactics may bedeployed, the military, with all itsarsenal, should not have becomea major casualty.

When the Borno Stategovernor, Kashim Shettima,

•OKONJO-IWEALA

alluded to the fact that theinsurgents were more armed andmotivated than the military, everybody condemned him.

To the oil-producing states thatearn more by way of derivation, some people are asking questionson how the revenue is being putto judicious use. In the past, theerstwhile governor of BayelsaState, Mr Dipreye SolomonAlamiesiegha, was prosecuted forhelping himself with stateresources. He plea-bargained andforfeited some assets to the stategovernment. The immediate-pastgovernor, Mr James OnanefeIbori is currently in gaol in aforeign land for public theft. Ifthe managers of the resourcesbelonging to the states are beingmisused then, it behoves on otherstates to share it equally, so thatevery Nigerian becomes abeneficiary of it. However, if thatis done, where do we place theordinary folks in the oil-producing areas whose land andwater have been devasted andpolluted respectively? It is inview of this that we urge thatwhatever formula that is churnedout from the national conferenceshould be the one acceptable toall parts of the country. If theissue is not properly handled, itcould turn out to be an explosivethat may scatter the country.

If the Minister of Financeexpects the states to beaccountable for all revenueaccruable to them, it thenbehoves on the FederalGovernment to lead the way. Ourfifteen years of uninterrupteddemocracy should be jealouslyguided, so that we do not giveroom to the military to stage acomeback.

I personally think some of ourgovernors are taking things toofar. They act as if they are notpart of our society. Or, how elsedoes one explain the new or(reformed) pension bill ofGovernor Goodwill Akpabio forformer governors of the oil-richAkwa-Ibom State?

The contentious clause that hassparked public outrage is theN100 million and N50 millionmedical expenses for formergovernors and deputy governorsand their spouses. The consent ofAkpabio on the new pension billat a time like this smacks ofcallousness and insensitivity, realizing that some states cannotafford the minimum wage ofN18,000 monthly. Nigerianswould also recall that mostpensioners are not able to gettheir pensions as and when due. Some old people die on thequeue waiting to collect theirpittance called pension.Democracy is a power withresponsibility.

Memorable Quotes From Alhaji MusbaaudeenAdekojo, Former Co-ordinator of Campaign forDemocracy and National Chairman of Disciplinaryand Arbitration Committee of Alliance ForDemocracy (AD), On The PDP Candidate In TheState Of Osun, Senator Iyiola Omisore.

How PDP Funded Omisore To Kill Bola Ige - Adekojo

•The Slain Chief BOLA IGE

The fourth allegationwas that they heldmeetings with leadershipof the PDP with the intentto present Omisore as2003 gubernatorialcandidate of the PDP. Asat then, he was still acard-carrying member ofAD. They also allegedthat Omisore groups wereplanning to put AD intodisrepute, as they werealso planning unrest inthe party by eliminatingsome leaders. They werealso alleged to have beenheavily funded by thePDP. The party stateexecutive, in line withArticle 16, rules 3 and 4of the party, thensuspended Otunba IyiolaOmisore, Jelili Adesiyan,Kunle Alao and fourothers indefinitely. Theterrible aspect of theallegation was that theywere planning toeliminate our leader,Chief Bola Ige, the thenGovernor Bisi Akande, the Secretary to the StateGovernment, EngineerSola Akinwumi, the thenCommissioner forFinance, Lere Adebayo, and then Commissionerfor Works, Barrister NiyiOwolade.

The information we gotwas that Olagbaju was in-

charge of the moneygiven to them from Abujaand some of them werenot comfortable with themanner he was sharingthe fund. They launcheddeadly attacks on anotherand later the fund waskept in custody of JeliliAdesiyan. It was afterthat process thatOlagbaju was killed incold blood. They used thatfund for several violentattacks and theassassination of ChiefBola Ige. Adesiyan, whowas very close to ChiefBola Ige was used to

gather intelligence onhow to assassinate BolaIge. His house in Ibadanwas even used as ameeting point, as hishouse was very close toBola Ige’s house.

The circumstances thatsurrounded theassassination of Bola Igewas so clear and quoteme anywhere, Omisoreand his group killedUncle Bola. When wewere investigating theallegations leveled againstthem, including theirromance with the PDP,

receiving an amountworth N3 billion todistabilise AD andeliminate some of ourleaders, including UncleBola, we confronted themand it was establishedthat they meant thethreat, and that theassignment was heavily-funded. It was in publicknowledge, how Omisoreand his groupembarrassed Uncle Bolain Ile-Ife and his threat tokill him.

Yes, I did and evenpromised to testify againstanybody. I equallygranted interview tojournalists on what Iknew about theassassination of UncleBola. Even later, Omisoreinvited me and warnedme not to grant anyinterview on the matter. He equally offered N50million bribe not to sayanything on this matterand I told him that Icould not sell myconscience, especially, ona man that had shown melove and assisted me tobecome something in life,Uncle Bola was mymentor in politics, he alsopromised to take me tothe presidency for juicyappointment, but Irejected all this offer.

THERE is enoughattestation to confirmthat the political man of

the moment in Osun today isthe state governor, OgbeniRauf Aregbesola, if the sizeof the crowd at any rallyaddressed by him is to be abenchmark for scoring him inthis regard. If the people arethe equivalent of shares to anypolitician, it would not be anunderstatement to concludethat Aregbesola, with his superlativeperformance in office, has overpreparedfor his governorship re-election race. The source of the bravado of the majoropposition party in the state is based onthe intent to rig the August 9 governorshipelection in Osun.

It is observed that while Aregbesolais busy dotting his i’s and crossing his i’sof re-election, the preoccupation of themajor opposition party in the state hasbeen looking for ways to rig the election. So many unpleasant stories about thesharp practices of the opposition havebeen heard in this regard. First wasinducement of some unsuspectingmembers of the public with kerosene. Those in need of kerosene are made tocome up with two passport photographsand their voters’ cards. This, I learnt, isa vote-securing gospel according to oneof the controversial Peoples DemocraticParty’s (PDP) leaders in the South-West, Buruji Kashamu.

Another shady ploy of the Osun PDPto illegally secure victory in the August9 governorship election is to entice theelectorate with an empowermentprogramme through assessing micro-finance opportunity. However, theprerequisite for this is submission ofvoters’ cards by the patrons. A sourcewithin the PDP secretariat in the statedisclosed that whoever is keen inenjoying the opposition’s micro-financelargesse in the state would swear thathe would not vote for any other personother than the PDP governorshipcandidate.

The voters’ cards are said to bedropped in an already-available spiritualcoffin in the PDP’s state office. Thequestion is – if the purpose of any electionis to genuinely serve the people and notone’s pocket, is it worth all the antics? Why the desperation in schemingforcefully to govern the state? Whyjettisoning the rules of the game to hitone’s opponent below the belt? Anyvictory secure through the back door willdefinitely be short-lived. No one fightsthe people and goes Scot-free. It isimportant to amplify it that any attemptto rig the August 9 governorship electioncould be likened to conferment of astatus of a suicide bomber on one as thepeople will resist vehemently.

Another illicit device being used bythe Osun PDP to secure undeservedvictory at the governorship poll is byinvading some of the tertiary institutionsin the state, purchasing gullible students’

voters’ cards for N10,000. Ejigbocampus of Osun State University is areference point where the agents of thePDP were caught corrupting thestudents electorally. The same thingwas also reported at the Okuku campusof the university. The idea is to decimatethe number of votes likely to be nettedby the ruling party. Stories of cloningof cards by the PDP agents toencourage decimation of votes are alsoubiquitous across the state.

Should this be the trend of approachesto any election in the present dayNigeria? Nigerians are fond of makingreference to successful democracies insome African countries and outside thecontinent. I am afraid that with thecontinuous illegal activities of somedisgruntled politicians in the Nigeriansociety, attaining authentic democraticsetting may elude this country. Why isit that there are some sacred cows inour midst? The foundation of socialunrest being witnessed in the North-Eastern part of the country that is

gradually extending to the entireNorthern states by the obnoxious andinhuman activities of Boko Haram maybe traced to election rigging as therecannot be peace without justice.

It is known to all discerning minds thatPresident Goodluck Jonathan-ledpresidency is the spine of the PDP’splan to rig both Osun and Ekitigovernorship elections. PresidentJonathan should know that he was, allthe while, being deceived about thepopularity of his party in any of the statesin the South-West. The President shouldsend an independent delegation to theSouth-West, especially Osun and Ekiti, with a view to knowing the true statusof his party.

Those feeding him information aboutthe South-West geo-political zone havebeen economical with the truth. WhenI saw an image of the President on thetelevision few days ago, I did not envyhim as the multifarious problems of thenation have manifested in the grey hairon his head. My appeal to the President

is that if he doesn’t wantto compound the nation’sproblem, he shouldmaintain absoluteneutrality in the incomingState of Osun and Ekitigovernorship elections asanything contrary to thiswill be an expressinvitation to chaos andanarchy capable ofconsuming the principalactors in the rigging

Aregbesola’s popularity and superlativepolitical reference in Osun today shouldtake time to attend his political rallies. The unprecedented large crowd of hisadmirers that turned up at his maidengovernorship rally in Ile-Ife, last week,is still fresh in the memory of the peopleof the state. The governor’s supporterswho thronged the GovernmentTechnical College, Ilode, Ile-Ife, inseveral thousands at the homestead ofSenator Iyiola Omisore, is a pointer tothe fact that any attempt to rig electionin the ancient city would be a suicidemission. The second leg of theAregbesola re-election mega-rallyhosted in Ikire by Ayedaade, Isokan andIrewole Federal Constituency of Osunheld in Ikire last Tuesday was also notless than a fulfilled dream in any politicalcalculation as the entire town of Ikirestool still before, during and after thepolitical colossus had left the town. Thewhole of Ikire township was turned to acarnival as different groups ofAregbesola’s admirers were singing, dancing and exchanging pleasantries incommemoration of the mega rally.

Senator Isiaka Adeleke, the firstcivilian governor of the state who isbarely a fortnight-old as a member ofthe All Progressives Congress (APC),was so carried away at the Ikire megarally. He intuitively remarked that withwhat he had seen about Aregbesola’sgovernorship re-election aspiration in theAugust 9 election, the incumbentgovernor’s chance of returning was 80per cent even if he does not campaignagain or start any new project. SenatorAdeleke who had seen it all in the PDPcannot be wrong in his appraisal ofAregbesola.

What is further compounding theimpossibility of Iyiola Omisore inbecoming a tenant at OkefiaGovernment House is that he hascreated for himself more enemies thanfriends. For instance, none of the fourgovernors that had governed Osunbeginning from Adeleke, Chief BisiAkande, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlolaand Rauf Aregbesola, the incumbent, isfavourably disposed to the infamouspolitical aspiration of Iyiola Omisore. Inessence, the August 9 governorshipelection in Osun could be said to be afierce battle between Omisore and thefour governors put together. How farhe can succeed is left for the readers tofill in the gap.
