Osun PDP Chair Escapes To London With Election Fund

UNKNOWN to many of the party members andsupporters, feelers ahead of the August 9, 2014governorship election held in the State of Osun

had already shown that the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) candidate in the election, Senator Iyiola Omisore, was heading for defeat at the poll, as prominent membersof the party were merely on self-serving mission.

OSUN DEFENDERgathered from authoritativesources that very few ofOmisore’s trusted aidesgenuinely believed in hiscandidature or hispersonality, as beingenough to win the electionagainst a formidablecandidate of the All

Progressives Congress(APC) and incumbentgovernor of the state,Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola’spolitical stature.

According to animpeccable source withinthe party, majority of thoseclaiming to be loyal toOmisore’s candidature

were actually having theirfocus on the cash to bereleased by the Presidencyfor the prosecution of theelection, which in theircalculation would run intoseveral billions of naira.

When the first tranche ofthe presidential largessearrived the state, it wasreported that the StateChairman of the party, MrGani Olaoluwa, had been restassured that he would be theone to distribute the moneyto whoever he wished.

Trouble however started,when Omisore suddenly

turned against the idea andassumed the role of beingthe one to share the cash tothose he deemed fit.

This, according tosources, nearly led toaltercation between the twoparty men but waseventually resolved inOmisore’s favour, but theparty chairman was reliablygathered to have reluctantlyshifted ground.

To have his own poundof flesh, Olaoluwa wasgathered to have sworn towhoever cared to listen thathe would have his last laugh

against Omisore. Not quite long after the

encounter, the PDPcandidate ordered for fiftytrailer-load of rice for onwarddistribution to party faithfuland supporters, directingthe party chairman andother members of hisexecutives to handle thedistribution as they deemedfit.

The trucks that broughtthe rice into the statehowever, arrived in themiddle of the night and itwas the party chairman thedrivers called, who directed

them to offload a sizeablenumber of trailer-loads ofthe rice at his wife’s shop, which was gathered to bebig enough to accommodateseveral tonnes of rice.

Omisore was gathered tohave been marvelled overthe development andreportedly expressed hisdispleasure over thechairman’s action ofdiverting the rice to hiswife’s shop.

A twist was however, introduced to the drama, when few days after the ricewas delivered, burglarsreportedly entered thechairman’s wife’s shop inOsogbo and carted away allthe tonnes of the rice.

The matter could not bereported to the Police, as thechairman could had beenthe first suspect to bearrested and detained overthe incidence but ratherdecided to treat the issue asa PDP family affair, in viewof the negative press it mightgenerate before the election.

The medium furthergathered that numerousparty chieftains refused todisburse various sums ofmoney given to them tolobby voters on the electionday, just as many of themvanished into thin air afterthe party lost the election tothe APC with their loot.

As one of the femalechieftains of the PDP whohails from Ora-Igbomina inIfedayo Local GovernmentCouncil Area of the state, was escaping to Londonwith her own share of themoney, she was heard tellingsome of her party menaround that she had had herown part of the nationalcake and whether the partylikes it or not, she wouldhave been out of reachbefore they would knowwhat has hit them.

It would be recalled thatit was reported by thismedium recently how thestate chairman of the PDPmisappropriated N500million election fund in hiscare to the surprise of thechieftains and members ofthe party in the state.

As at the time of filing thisreport, Olaoluwa was said tohave travelled to the GreatBritain to enjoy his loot.

Inability To Rescue Chibok Girls, EnoughReason To Vote Out President Jonathan - CDHR THE State of Osun Branch of Committee for the

Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has said that theinability of President Goodluck Jonathan to rescue

the over 200 abducted Chibok girls by the Boko Haram wasenough ground to vote him out as president in the 2015general elections.

The group stated thatPresident Jonathan has failedin his constitutional duties ofprotecting lives and propertyof the citizens, having failed torescue the girls five monthsafter their abduction.

The State PublicitySecretary of the CHDR,Comrade Ismaeel Uthman, stated this in Osogbo onSunday in a press statementissued to commemorate the fivemonths #BringBackOurGirlsstruggle.

Uthman chided thePresidency for “mocking” the#BringBackOurGirls strugglewith a campaign billboard forPresident Jonathan inscribed“#BringBackJonathan.

According to Uthman , theineptitude of the president andthe compromise of securityagencies were responsible forthe insecurity challenges facingthe country.

“Had the president beenproactive and responsive to theabduction of the Chibok girls

on time, they would have beenrescued.

“The president and securityagencies waited for two weeksbefore believing the abductionof the girls,” Uthman stated.

He stressed that the inabilityof the president and thesecurity agencies stated in clearterms how insecure Nigeriansare in the face of the securitychallenges.

Uthman said: “Today,September 14, marks fivemonths of the abduction of theChibok girls. CDHRcommiserated with the familyof the girls and we pray thatGod, the comforter, willcomfort them and bring theirgirls back to them.

“It is only a Nigerianpresident that will feelcomfortable with the fivemonths abduction of teenagersand instead of concentrating onthe rescue efforts, thePresident’s attention isbasically on how to return tooffice for second term.

“The Presidency has evengone senseless to the point ofmocking the#BringBackOurGirls struggleby erecting #BringbackJonathan billboardsin Abuja. That tells us the levelof insensitivity andlackadaisical attitude of thepresident to the rescue of thegirls.

“We accused PresidentJonathan of complicity in the

insecurity of Nigeria. Westrongly believe that thepresident is playing pranks onthe security situation. Thepresident is protecting thesponsors of the insurgency.

“How would the Presidentexplain his trip to Chad, acountry suspected of aidingand abetting the Boko Haram, with Senator Alimodu Sherif, who has been accused andindicted in several revelationand documents of being thebrain behind the insurgency?

“The President’s trip to

Chad with Sheriff was anotherway of telling the Departmentof State Security ( DSS) that isinvestigating the former BornoState governor to stop theirinvestigation,” Uthman said:“If the president refuses toacknowledge his inefficiencyand ineffectiveness on theabducted girls, that is evenenough to vote him out in the2015 general elections.

“We cannot continue to havea president that does not careabout the citizens’ security andwelfare.

How OSPOLY Lecturers Retard Academic Development – InvestigationsBy SHINA ABUBAKAR

FACTS have emerged for the current low quality ofgraduates being chunned out by the Osun StatePolytechnic, Iree, as the school system is said to favour

loyalty at the expense of merit for promotion and recruitmentof academic staffers into the school system.

Investigations conducted byOSUN DEFENDER inside theinstitution showed that despitegovernment financialcommitment to the school toensure high standard, theauthority is sabotaging theeffort on the reasons that itprefers staffers that wouldpledge loyalty to them thancontributing immensely to thecapacity development of theschool.

It was gathered that unlikein the past, when lecturers withrequired credentials andwherewithal to impactknowledge into students, whichwas the reason for highattraction of prospectivestudents from within andoutside the state, contrary isthe case of the institution at themoment.

This, according to a formerSenior Lecturer in the school,

was responsible for the qualityof its alumni all around thecountry, but quickly added thatthe trend is no longerimpressive, as most of thegraduates the school turned outthese days are rejected forhigher degree programmes inuniversities in the country.

Findings revealed that trendof recruitment in the school inrecent times is to first employprospective lecturers oncontract basis, after which theyare either employedpermanently or frustrated outof the system.

It was gathered that somedepartmental heads are notcomfortable with thecredentials of some of the

graduates that applied forteaching appointments becausemost of the older lecturersemployed as HND holdershave refused to upgradethemselves and would not wantyoung lecturers’ lord overthem.

Presently, the school has alot of university graduates aspart-time contract lecturers, who have either completedtheir second degrees or on theverge of completing it, cuttingacross various departments. However, these categories oflecturers’ appointments maynever be regularised despiteholding credible credentials andtheir potentials.

This has been ascribed to the

fact that if their appointmentis regularised, the younggraduates may become seniorlecturers ahead of their oldercolleagues, who wereemployed as technicians andwere converted to academicstaffers based on their“loyalty” to the authority.

Checks revealed that mostlecturers, who were employedin the last decade, wereemployed as technologists orchief technologists, only tomanoeuvre their ways tobecome academic staffers, yet, most of this set of lecturersstill possess the qualificationwith which they were firstemployed.

Findings however, showedthat the development isalready taking its toll on thestudents, as these lecturerscare only for the cash rewardthey get from sales ofmandatory hand-outs tostudents and abandon the classafter having allotted thecourses to themselves as seniorlecturers.

Meanwhile, whenever theissue of accreditation crops up,the school authority wouldpresent the part-time lecturers

with university degrees as theirmain staffers to protect itscredibility, meanwhile, most ofthem only assisted the mainlecturers, who possess lowercertificates.

Some of the young graduatesare not even allotted courses soas not to understand the “tickmoney” generated from thesales of hand-outs to students, while HND graduates, whofinished from the school areallowed to take courses even forHND classes against the NBTEregulations.

A source within theadministrative buildingconfided in the medium that theirregularities permeate throughthe whole school systemincluding the management, whose language is loyalty, ratherthan merit in an academicenvironment.

The source added that excepttangible steps are taken by thegovernment, the school may bechurning out political thugs, rather than building humancapacity to develop the stateand the country, saying asthings stand now, the school ispolitically polarised and istaking toll on the students.

Oyintiloye further reiteratedthat aside their political value, women remain the cornerstone

of economic development intrade and agriculture.

He maintained that theirroles both in formal andinformal sectors of theeconomy, especially in thesupply of labour for economicprosperity, cannot be over-emphasised.

This, he said, was the basicreason thousands of womenhave been empowered in termsof skill acquisition, soft loans, direct employment amongothers, of which, widows andaged women were not left out, noting that this gesture hadstarted yielding positiveresults on the economy of thestate.

Expressing delight on thecommitment of Aregbesola’sadministration to theenhancement of women status,he maintained that theadministration would continue

to ensure that women havesufficient access to keyresources such as education, health, empowerment andhuman capacity development.

The AP is praying thecourt to look into the resultof the election, whichaccording to the petition, was not free and fair.

Addressing newsmenshortly after filing the replyat the State High Court inOsogbo, lead counsel tothe APC, Mr KunleAdegoke, said while the AP17-page petition containsonly 14 witnesses toprove that the election wasrigged in 30 localgovernment council areas, the APC is presenting 30witnesses to prove that inmost parts of the state, theelection was free and fair.

According to him, thepetition lacks the basicrequirements that must bemet by a petitioner.

He further stressed thatthe removal of the formerChairman of ElectionPetition Tribunal, JusticeI.M. Bako, which wasinstigated by the AccordParty, ought to have beencarried out with recourseto some other partiesinvolved in the petition.

By ISMAEEL UTHMAN

The War Called The Osun Elections; By Segun Tomori Continued frompg1I just couldn’t imagine my home State go back to thedisastrous “years of the locust”. I had participated activelyin the campaigns, interacted with the people, felt their pulseand the story was the same – Osun has never had it so good, the people vowed to defend their votes by all meanspossible! From that moment I had made up my mind to givemy all and put myself at harm’s way if need be to ensurewe form a bulwark of resistance against the machinery ofState to be deployed to thwart the people’s wish.

When I was about to proceed on my journey to Osogbo, theOsun State Capital on Monday preceding the elections Iprepared for the worst. Few associates privy to my tripadvised strongly that I removed any APC sourvenir frommy luggage, any ID card that can associate me with theparty amongst other security tips. They were right to beapprehensive, soldiers, officials of the Department of StateSecurity(DSS) including the hooded ones, lorry loads ofmobile policemen had since being deployed across the nookand cranny of Osun State. Bearing in mind the desperationof their paymasters, we knew they could stop and searchvehicles and abduct anything synonymous with APC, so Itook all the precautions. I took off on the journey which initself was dramatic.

As we got close to Oshogbo, a discussion ensued in the busand I found out I was not alone in the Save-Osun initiative. Most of the passengers shared the same sentiments with meand were also natives of the State. They spoke emotionallyand fiercely about their determination to ensureAregbesola’s victory. Speaker after speaker reeled outprogrammes and interventions of the Governor that hasbrought smiles to the faces of the people. They concludedhe was the best thing to happen to the State since its creation. The menacing apparatus of State then suffocating theenviroment will not deter them, they thundered! “Ko si ohunti soja o se, a ma duro gboin gboin lati dibo Aregbe” theysaid in yoruba dialect meaning “there is nothing Soldiers cando, we will stand firmly to vote for Aregbe”. I thought tomyself, we are about to witness mass resistance unequallyin our national history if anything go against the people’swill. Hopefully, the soldiers we met on the various check-points didn’t stop and search, they just peeped through thebus windows and passed us on. I heaved a sigh of reliefwhen I arrived Osogbo safely late in the evening.

I have attended rallies, mega-rallies , name it, but what Isaw on Tuesday at the grand-finale of the campaign was

frightening. A stadium whose capacity can’t be more than60,000 almost caved in due to pressure from an unprecedentedmammoth crowd. Every space on the covered stands wereover-filled, the main bowl of the Stadium was virtuallyunpassable. My associates and I had to hold ourselves tonavigate our way through the crowd, it took us about an hourfrom the entrance of the stadium to find somewhere to perch!Yet thousands more extend to adjoining roads outside thestadium. It was the APC mega-rally and to say it wasawesomely mega is an understatement! We even heard that theLord of Aso-rock caught an instant migraine seeing themagnitude of the rally! The effect of that was seen in thesealing off of the freedom park that was supposed to hostworkers rally the next day by “hooded soldiers” They got thenow familiar, albeit emergency “orders from above” toforcefully if need be halt the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)and its affiliates endorsement rally for the Ogbeni.

Co-incidentally, Wednesday, 6th August was my birthday but Iwas in no mood for celebrations of any kind. I told my well-wishers, family and friends that you don’t clink glasses in abattle-front! Interestingly, one of my compatriots who was alsoa major ‘battle-axe” and good friend’s birthday was 8th Augustso I told him we’ll do a birthday plus victory party on the 10th,a day after the elections, when we triumph at the polls. Weknow we had the people behind us, we never gave defeat athought! By Thursday, preparations had reached feverish pitch, the towns, hamlets and villages was now massively flowingwith uniformed men of all hues and shades. Some DSSoperatives came to the restaurant we were having dinner,Thursday evening, apparently on surveillance mission. We gotthe message and we left in a jiffy! On our way to our location,we noticed a car trailing us, so we had to take a decoy to a bar.As we turned to the bar, the car also turned in another direction.Their mission still remains a mystery. Thank God for littlemercies!

When we arrived our abode, we swung into action to putfinishing touches to our master-plan which was to run a co-ordinated and effective live broadcast of the elections on socialand online media in collaboration with the APC situation roomwhich was to start from Friday evening till the announcementof the results on Sunday. This was necessary because leakingthe plans of our devious opponents was key to frustrate theirrigging machinery; announcing results online as we get itdirectly from our agents was also crucial to frustrate anymanipulation at the collation level. By Friday afternoon, I hadto tactically separate from my friends who then proceeded to ahigh security location. The curfew was going to start around 5-6pm. By 4pm, I arrived at my own secure location and quickly

moved to set up. I surveyed the enviroment to assess the possiblethreat level. I saw that it was negligible so I settled down for thetask ahead.

By Friday evening we got intelligence report that notorius electionrigger, Chris Uba was in town with a unit of 50 soldiers attached tohim. We sent that out and made sure it went viral. Later that night, information about the arrest of our leaders ranging from APCPublicity Secretary, lai Mohammed, the Attorney-general OfOsun State, barr. Wale Afolabi, Tinubu’s Special Adviser onmedia, Mr Sunday are, Commissioner for Agric among otherswere swiftly publicised with dispatch. The far-reaching effect ofthe noise we made contributed in no small measure to the releaseof most of those picked up by Saturday morning. We discoveredby Saturday morning that fake soldiers and policemen hadsurfaced in many locations. Their logo was a red ankara tied totheir left hand. Quickly we activated our instant alert to ourpeople, through all means possible. That again thwarted efforts tomanipulate the elections from the beginning.

The elections started peacefully however in most locations withaccreditation going on smoothly. The only snag was the continuedharassment of APC leaders across the State. The case of the 1stCivilian Governor of Osun State, Alhaji Isiaka Adeleke was quiteinstructive. After failing to assasinate him over-night due toresistance by his security aides, he was trailed from the pollingunit to his mother’s residence where he went after accreditation. He escaped the siege by the whisker after he was discreetlynotified. He couldn’t come back to exercise his franchise. Theresults started trickling in by afternoon and the PDP demolitionsquad sensing their rejection quickly switched to a plan B to disruptthe collation process. We instantly alerted the public about theirnorturnal meeting and evil plot. What really helped the APC apartfrom the determination of the people was our access to classifiedinformation. We were always a step ahead of them and thatfrustrated the election riggers.

I got an anonymous call from a patroitic police officer around8pm who claimed he was at a location at modakeke and that resultsbeing collated was about to be altered. You could detect the fear inhis voice as he asked me to ensure his cover. He was an igboofficer deployed from other states, he wasn’t familiar with theterrain but what was gratifying that there could still be few men ofintegrity in the corruption-ridden Nigeria Police Force. In order toconfirm the authenticity of his Statement, I asked the Apapa LocalGovernment Chairman who was with me to speak to him. Hesounded credible, he concluded. So I made some calls to theauthorities and sent text message to our men to act immediately.

Before 11pm, we already had all the results and we had won,

though unofficially. What sealed the deal for us and put paid toany manipulation the PDP had in stock was the unexpectedcongratulation of Aregbesola as the winner of the electionaround 9.40pm by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuade.Omisore according to our sources had already informed Aso-rock that there was fighting in his home-town of Ile-Ife becauseaccording to him, the results we were circulating were fake andhe was actually leading in the “original” results. The Ooniswiftly debunked that, not only congratulated the Governor-elect, but also stated that nobody was fighting in Ife! That tookthe sail out of the wind of Omisore and his treacherous gang.

If we thought the threats have been subdued, we were in for ashocker! The returning officer whose task it is to announce thefinal result was under pressure to collect a whooping N1b andannounce Omisore winner! They were ready to damn theconsequences and ask us to go to court. So we had to practicallygo on our knees! I salute the indefatigable people of Osun State, they were resolute, they stood like a rock, stayed on the streetsall through and formed a human shield around the collationcentre. Then the returning officer came in around 1.35pm. Theresults of all the local governments were announced before5am. Then we now witnessed dilly-dallying of the highestorder. It got to a point around 7am, anxious journalists andpeople started singing asking for the results. Lo and Behold, atabout 7.10am, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola was finally pronouncedthe winner!

There was instant jubilation across the nook and cranny ofOshogbo. Never in the history of elections have I seen suchspontaneous excitement pervade the landscape because ofresults announcement. Within the twinkle of an eye, the wholetown went agog with people clutching their brooms- symbol ofthe Governor’s party, congratulating themselves, okada ridersdriving menacingly in such euphoric ecstasy and finally wecould say hurray! We won! We didn’t win an election, we wona WAR with a stone like the biblical david. Goliath came tobattle with the best arsenal at his disposal but we came with thewill of a determined people that vowed that never again shallthey go the road of perdition they once trodded. Who says thevoice of the people is not the voice of God? Because ultimatelythe hand of the Almighty saved the day and gave us victory.Osun ti dara ooooooo.

THE travails of the ElectoralOfficers for Osogbo andObokun Local Governments of

Osun State are a lesson on how notto help the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP). The two officers have beensuspended by INEC whileinvestigation into their misconduct isongoing.

The Electoral Officer for Osogbo,Mr Tope Fabunmi, was suspended forthe ignoble role he played before andduring the August 9 governorshipelection in Osun State. Complaintswere lodged against him that he wasasking for the political affiliation ofregistered voters who had come tocollect their permanent voters’ cardsand would find a way to deny thosewho identified with APC. He was alsoreported to his superiors by the APCfor not releasing the identity tags forthe party’s agents on election day.He only released 70 tags out of 240and only grudgingly released the restafter a petition was written to hissuperiors and the intervention of EUobservers. But by then, accreditationhad passed. The most egregious ofthe allegation against him was thathe dumped the form EC8C, whereresult for Osogbo Local Governmentwould have been recorded, in a wastebin, thereby delayed the collation ofresult in the council area till the weehours of the next day. This was done

ostensibly to manipulate the result. Hebrought out the forms only after apetition had been written to INEC andstern warning issued to him by his boss.

The EO for Obokun, Mr AnthonyOlusegun Eshinoye, was suspended forillegally diverting election materialsbefore election day and was on the wayto a PDP leader’s house in Ilase, prompting vigilant youths to stop himand he was arrested by the police.Strangely, he was released to a PDPnational leader from the state.

Curiously, immediately they weresuspended by INEC, PDP twisted thefacts and smuggled a story into themedia, that they were suspended forrigging for APC. INEC was forced tocategorically deny this and make publicthe real reasons they were suspended.

Their suspension was meant to be anin-house affair, now it has been blownopen and all eyes are now on INEC. Theywill not come out smelling of roses. Theythought they were working for the PDP,but now they have been ditched andtheir career is on the line.

The same applies to some misguidedcivil servants, especially two permanentsecretaries and a director who took onthe garb of partisanship during theelection, throwing decency and all rulesin the book to the gutters. They wereopenly campaigning for the candidateof the PDP and were seen distributinghis vests. One even stood for him as aparty agent. It is the height of insanityfor civil servants to be so brazenlypartisan.

These civil servants naively believedthe assurances of the PDP thatthey had wrapped up theelection and at worst, theresult would be written andannounced from Abuja. Totheir regret and eternal shame,Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola wonin a landslide. The affectedcivil servants have since been

thrown into panic and unspeakable griefafter Omisore lost the election. Theycannot face their colleagues again andare sorely afraid of the inevitableconsequences of their indiscretion.

The just retribution that awaits theseignoble conducts are a good lesson forthose who may be tempted to align withthe devil at the expense ofprofessionalism and integrity.

OSUN DEFENDER Thursday, September 18, 20146 INTERVIEW

Why Prof Olawoyin-led Council ShouldBe Sacked – UNIOSUN ASUU ChairDr Abiona Oluseye of the Department of Chemical Sciences, Osun State University,

UNIOSUN, Osogbo, is the Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU),UNIOSUN chapter.

He spoke on sundry issues affecting UNIOSUN in this interview during his courtesy visit toOSUN DEFENDER office in Osogbo recently.

QUEST: The Pro-Chancellorsaid that ASUU-UNIOSUNis being instigated against

him by the Vice-Chancellor. Whatis your take on this?

Ans: Speaking on behalf of ASUU,I wish to say that this is a grossmisrepresentation of facts and agrotesque misunderstanding of thephilosophy, ideals and principles whichASUU stands for.

There is no iota of truth in thatallegation and we consider thatstatement an insult

to ASUU. ASUU is the collectivebody of academics, thinking beings whocannot be led by the nose by anybodyincluding the Pro-Chancellor, the Vice-Chancellor or Management. We discussissues appertaining to the academic andgeneral welfare of our members. Weengage Management, Council andGovernment on the direction and futuredevelopment of Osun State university.

ASUU is a body of robust scholars. We are not robots as Prof. Olawoyinis trying to portray us.

Quest: Do you have any personalgrouse against the Pro-Chancellor.

Ans: Professor Gabriel Olawoyinmay have personal grouse against me.I do not have any personal grouseagainst him. I am a culture Yorubaperson. I will also not be part of anysystem that will foster a system ofcorruption, irresponsibility anddisregard for due process in theUniversity.

I will answer your question directly.First, it is not true as Prof. Olawoyinhad claimed that I was promoted toLecturer I in 2014. My promotion waswith effect from October 2012.Second, I responded to an internal andexternal advertisement for appointmentinto Senior Lectureship cadre based onadditional publications since 2012.Appointment is another channel ofelevation in the university system. I donot want to join issues with the Pro-Chancellor on my appointment but willprovide salient points on how he hasbeen undermining UNIOSUN and howUNIOSUN has been witnessing braindrain under his watch.

Without any iota of doubt, ProfessorOlawoyin is not interested in theacademic development of the universityin any sense. Rather, he is sendingexperienced academics andresearchers away from UNIOSUNthrough his draconian policies onappointments and promotions. Forinstance, when the Appointments andPromotions Committee (Academic)recommended Dr. Adebisi TajudeenAdewumi of the Faculty of Educationfor appointment as Senior Lecturer,

Professor Olawoyin rejected therecommendation. It is a commonknowledge that Dr. Adebisi wassubsequently appointed as a SeniorLecturer at Obafemi AwolowoUniversity, Ile-Ife. Is ProfessorOlawoyin claiming to be upholdinghigher promotional standard thanOAU? In fact, brain drain has hitUNIOSUN given the number ofUNIOSUN academic staff moving toother universities. For example, Dr.Adewole Atere, an AssociateProfessor of Sociology withUNIOSUN was recently appointed aProfessor of Sociology at the FederalUniversity of Oye-Ekiti, (FUOYE).Similarly, Dr. Ajiboye Abiodun Hakeemrecently left for the Federal University,Oye-Ekiti. In the same vein, Dr.Senayon Olaoluwa, the literary guruand one of the leading scholars in post-modernist literature was poached by theauthorities of University of Ibadan.

I also wish to point out the case ofDr. Moruf Olayiwola of the Departmentof Mathematics who wasrecommended by A & PC for SeniorLectureship position but was stepped

down by the all-knowing Prof.Olawoyin. It may interest you to knowthat Dr. Olayiwola has been appointedas a Senior Lecturer at the Universityof Port-Harcourt.

Quest: Is the Appointments andPromotions (Academic) the Vice-Chancellor’s Committee?

Ans: That is another falsehood beingspread by Prof. Olawoyin.Appointments and PromotionsCommittee (Academic) is a jointCommittee of Senate and Council.Though the committee is headed by theVice-Chancellor, it has representativesfrom the Senate, Council and Faculties.Under Prof. Olawoyin’s watch, Councilis represented in the A &P (Academic)Committee by two external membersin whom he has great trust and respect. These gentlemen are ProfessorAkinyinka Omigbodun of the Universityof Ibadan and Prof. GabrielAdegboyega of the Faculty ofTechnology, Obafemi AwolowoUniversity, Ile-Ife. If the A&P(Academic) Committee consisting ofCouncil’s representatives recommenda staff for promotion and appointment

and Prof. Gabriel Olawoyin thinksotherwise, the blame should not beheaped on the Chairman of theCommittee. Prof. Olawoyin is the alphaand omega, the oracle of UNIOSUNCouncil.

Quest: What is your position onthe non-payment, promotion andsalary increment arrears of staffmembers by the Council andManagement?

Ans: The welfare of our academicstaff member is our primaryresponsibility. A labourer deserves hiswage/salary. If a staff is due forpromotion and annual salary incrementarrears, we expect the Council andManagement to prioritize that. The totalamount necessary to pay theoutstanding arrears is roughly N21million only which is within the capacityof the university to pay. We did notembark on strike in July because of thethen forthcoming August 9, 2014governorship Election. We did not wantto be branded as agent provocateur. We respected the peace ofUNIOSUN, the peace of Osun State. However, Prof. Olawoyin is always onwar path with the academic staff.

He does not need any rocket scienceto know the financial status of theUniversity or to pay our salary arrearsbefore the September meeting ofCouncil. He must have a very specialreason for postponing all academic andstaff welfare matters till September 30,2014. We thank God that GovernorRauf Aregbesola has been re-electedfor a Second Term. The Chairman ofCouncil certainly has a very sinisteragenda for the Management and selectacademic staff members of the State ofOsun University.

Quest: What is the Position ofProfessor Olawoyin-led GoverningCouncil on sustainable funding ofUNIOSUN?

Ans: The primary purpose of anyGoverning Council is to attract men andwomen of good will to providesustainable funding and financial supportfor the university. Indeed, when theSecond Governing Council wasinaugurated on November 27, 2014,Governor Aregbesola charged theCouncil to be very proactive on funding:“On funding, I want a clear departureon tuition and subvention from theowner state. It is immoral to pass theburden of full cost on the students. While we will not fail to fulfill ourobligation to the university but ratherimprove on it, we want your major tasktherefore, to be repositioning theinstitution for better endowments, income from intellectual outputs likepatents and innovative business ideas.

OSUN DEFENDER Thursday, September 18, 2014 7INTERVIEW

Why Prof Olawoyin-led Council ShouldBe Sacked – UNIOSUN ASUU Chair

Since the society is the firstbeneficiary of university graduates, it isalso necessary that the larger societybe part of the funding of the university... You must therefore task individuals, enterprises and corporation for thefunding of the university”.

Since the Olawoyin Council wasappointed by Governor RaufAregbesola, it has not generated a dimefor the university. It has not attractedany goodwill, benefaction, bequests orendowment to the University. We havegood examples of Pro-Chancellorswho invested in the universities theypresided over. A

good example is that of Aare AfeBabalola, the erstwhile Chairman ofUNILAG Council, who donated theAfe Babalola Multipurpose Auditoriumto the university of Lagos. Anothergood example is Chief WoleOlanipekun, Pro-Chancellor, formerUniversity of Ibadan, who donated 400-capacity lecture theatre at Ajibode toUI. He further directed all hisentitlements be converted to ascholarship scheme and he gaveindigent students of Law, Medicine andComputer Science Annual Scholarship. He also donated generously towardsprogramme accreditation of LawFaculty. And when the August 26, 2011flood disaster in Ibadan damagedsubstantial property in the University ofIbadan, Chief Olanipekun personallydonated the sum of N10 milliontowards ameliorating the suffering of theinstitution.

Both Chief Afe Babalola and ChiefWole Olanipekun remain veritablemodel and compass for any Pro-Chancellor seeking enduring legacy. Wejust hope that it is not already too latefor a Council that is always at war withthe Management, Senior StaffAssociation (SSANU) and ASUU-UNIOSUN. The only associationwhich Professor Olawoyin has love foris the Non-Academic Staff Union(NASU).

Quest: Do you have any otherprogrammes already suspended bythe Pro Chancellor?

Ans: I wish to plead with alleducation stakeholders in the State ofOsun to prevail on Professor Olawoyinto allow the Senate to run the academicaffairs of the university. Again, theChairman of the Council has stoppedthe take-off of our Professional andAcademic post-graduate programmes,in spite of the fact that NUC approvedthe establishment of four professionalprogrammes which are germane andrelevant to manpower needs of thenation. These programmes areProfessional Master in Disaster andRisk Management, Professional Masterin Environmental Management,Professional Masters in Intelligence andStrategic Studies and ProfessionalMasters in International Studies. Theuniversity also received NUC blessingfor four academic programmes: M.A.History and International Studies, M.Sc

Biochemistry, M.Sc Microbiology andM.Sc Geography.

The council under ProfessorOlawoyin refused to give approvalbecause he does not believe in humandevelopment. It is the responsibility ofthe Vice-Chancellor to ensure thatadequate staffing is provided to run ourPG programmes. As I speak to you, other sister universities have advertisedpostgraduate admissions for the 2014/2015 academic session. Applicationsfor PG studies are on-going at theUniversity of Ilorin, University of Lagos,University of Ibadan, ObafemiAwolowo University, among others. These are samples of advertisement foryour perusal. The Professor Olawoyin-led Council should be sacked. Thecouncil under Professor Olawoyin hasfailed in its primary responsibility ofpromoting good governance and ofproviding sustainable funding for theuniversity.

Quest: The Pro-Chancellorapproved that IJMB should run foronly one year. What is yourposition?

Ans: Again, the Pro-Chancellor andChairman of the Council, ProfessorOlawoyin lied to the public on this. Hehas a very superficial understanding ofthe role of Governing Council in theuniversity system. Senate regulates theacademic activities while the GoverningCouncil deals with policy-making and

superintends over the assets (estate, property and finances of the University). His stoppage of IJMB, is an erosion ofthe powers of the Senate as enshrinedin Osun State University Law 2006 andin the law of other Nigerian universities.

For clarity, the Senate of theuniversity at its meeting held on January16, 2014 unanimously approved theoperation of IJMB programme witheffect from 2013/2014 session. IJMBis An ‘A’ Level Programme intendedfor candidates aspiring to gain admissioninto any Nigerian universities throughdirect entry.

In February, 2014, the universitymanagement advertised the programmeand sought the council’s approval forthe appropriate school fees to becharged. Professor Olawoyin openlytold the council members and universitycommunity that the programme wouldnot receive his blessing. It was after alot of entreaties and pleadings that hereluctantly accepted that theprogramme should run for one year only.

Quest: How valid is the claim bythe Pro-Chancellor that the IJMBprogramme is not being run byuniversities in the South-West?

Ans: Again, Professor GabrielOlawoyin has little knowledge aboutIJMB and the Nigerian UniversitySystem. IJMB is an A level programme,a pre-degree programme being run inOsun, Ogun and Ondo states. You may

seek clarification from the Vice-Chancellor of Bowen University, Iwo.IJMB is also being run at the FederalUniversity of Technology, Akure. Theprogramme was established during thetenure of the highly respected formerVice-Chancellor, Professor AdebisiBalogun. The programme currentlyruns under the Centre for ContinuingEducation (CCE) headed by ProfessorJ.O. Okunola. At FUTA, IJMB isknown as the University AdvancedBasic Programmes. Furthermore,IJMB is being run at the FederalUniversity of Agriculture, FUNAB,Abeokuta. You may also wish toconfirm this from the Vice-Chancellor,Professor Olusola Bandele Oyewoleand, who incidentally is also thePresident of Associations of Vice-Chancellors of African Universities. TheIJMB programme in FUNAB hasProfessor Francis Showemimo as theDirector. At Kwara State University,IJMB is run under the KW ASUAdvanced Basic Studies (ABS)programme. IJMB is also accepted asbasic qualification for Direct Entry atuniversity OF Ilorin, the best rankingUniversity in Nigeria. What kind ofacademic standard is ProfessorOlawoyin projecting? He needsadequate and

correct information about theNigerian university system.

Quest: The Pro-Chancellorclaims that students who enroll onIJMB Programme but who areunable to gain admission to theuniversity are usually core of thecultists in universities. What is yourtake?

Ans: I am not aware that ProfessorGabriel Olawoyin has done anyempirical or scientific research oncultism in Nigerian universities. Hespeaks from a very high level ofignorance and leading sociologistsand university administrators willconfirm this. IJMB is a pre-degree orbasic studies programme. Indeed,Foundation Programme, CambridgeA level, Pre-Degree Programme andIJMB are run in most Nigerianuniversities and those who could notgain admission through the mode in aparticular year try other avenues atthe next academic session.UNIOSUN runs Pre-Degree ScienceProgramme in our Ejigbo Campusand there has not been any incidenceof cultism since its establishment in2007. We also ran FoundationProgramme successfully for a numberof years until NUC directed that theprogramme should be stopped. OAUruns pre-degree programme at itsMoro Campus and it is a highlysuccessful exercise devoid of cultism. It is indeed illogical to link the IJMBprogramme with cultism. Cultism andgangsterism is an evil in Nigerianuniversity system which requires thecollective action of all stakeholders.

A Government Full Of Lies: ReubenAbati And Olisa Metu As AgentsWHEN a government keeps

on lying to its populace, then the whole country is in

trouble. For the past three years now,we have been witnessing all sorts oflies from the presidency.

Let me start with the latest lie bythe presidency through one of hisspokesman, Reuben Abati, who FemiFani-Kayode once referred to asamateur and cheeky. Mr Abaticlaimed that the security agencies arestill investigating Sheriff and that thePresident will not interfere.

Mr Abati also claimed that thePresident did not travel together toChad with Sherrif and any contactbetween the duo was only at theairport, when Sherrif accompaniedsome dignitaries to the airport toreceive the President.

Does Mr Abati or the office he isrepresenting know the meaning ofconflict of interest? What message isthe Presidency sending to the alreadycompromised security agencies aboutalleged Boko Haram sponsor? Whena President that is directing an agencyto investigate a suspect, and the samePresident is now exhibiting a shockingact of indiscretion by hobnobbing withthe same suspect, how do you expectthe security outfit to carry out its dutywithout fear or favour?

Is the Presidency aware of anoffence called “an accessory beforethe fact, or accessory after the fact, which the President can also becharged for immediately he loses hisimmunity?

If truly Modu-Sheriff is beeninvestigated, as claimed by ReubenAbati, how was he able to find hisway to Chad? Why is he still incustody of his international passportor diplomatic passport? A crime assevere as terrorism should not betreated with a kid gloves, because wewere all aware of the incident of theformer CBN governor, LamidoSanusi, when both his internationaland diplomatic passports wereconfiscated by the highlycompromised DSS even for a lesseroffence of mismanagement. Modu-Sheriff has been indicted by differentbodies and countries, would thePresidency pretend not to be awareof this? This accused fellow shouldnot be allowed to leave the countrybecause a sponsor of terrorism is asdangerous as the terroriststhemselves.

Reuben Abati lied that Mr Sheriffonly met the President at the airport, but with the indicted photographs incirculation showing the suspecttogether with the President in ameeting with the Chadian Presidenthas blown on the face of Mr Abati.

The APC spokesman threw some

posers at the Presidency, which up tillnow, no one has the courage to reply, except a jester known as OlisaMetuh, who is known for his lousystatement with no substance, with hispropaganda style of leadership.

The posers were: Why would thePresident even allow Sheriff into thevenue of his meeting with the ChadianPresident? Can anyone just go and besitting with President Jonathan in ameeting with the Chadian Presidentjust because the fellow happens to bein the Chadian capital at the time? What happened to security clearance, protocol etc?

What message is the Presidentsending to the security agencies bycirculating the picture of the accusedwith himself? Is that subtle message tothe security agencies that the accusedis a friend of the President, hence heis untouchable?

The action by President Jonathanconfirms that he either knows morethan he is willing to admit on the issueof those who are behind the BokoHaram insurgency or he is willing tosacrifice the battle against terrorismon the altar of political expediency.Either way, this action by the

President is the height of indiscretionat best or a palpable exhibition ofcallowness at worst. Whichever waywe look at it, President Jonathan canbe charged for both accessory andconspiracy after his tenure. Just as MrFani-Kayode quoted in one of hiswrites-up “Abati should shut up andlet his boss speak for himself onthis one.”

Another latest lie by thisgovernment is the issue of thecontroversial harsh tag designed forthe re-election of President GoodluckJonathan. The #BringBackJonathanharsh-tag, which has blanketeddifferent parts of the country, withbanners and billboards, has provokedoutrage within Nigeria and abroadbecause it mimics the harsh tag ofbring back our girls for the abductedgirls who have been in captivity formore than 150 days.

This annoying harsh tag has-been incirculation for more than two weeks, which was started by the Presidencythrough one of his overzealousspokesman, Doyin Okupe. Only forMr Abati to claim that the Presidencywas not aware of the offensive harshtag. Who is Reuben Abati fooling? Heshould please respect the doctoratedegree he is parading, even if he doesnot care about his reputation and his

family name.In 2013, when Saharareporters

reported about the 600-mandelegation President Jonathan took toUN General Assembly, Mr Abatidenounced the story as lacking insubstance. Lies may travel a thousandmiles, but truth will always catch upwith it”. The Minister of ForeignAffairs, Ambassador Wali, had justcorroborated that story that PresidentJonathan did lead a 600- mandelegation to the United NationsGeneral Assembly last year. Thisdisclosure was made while he wasaddressing heads of ministries, departments and agencies. ReubenAbati, where is your conscience?

During one of the media chats ofPresident Jonathan, he claimed thatTransparency International noted thatNigeria was the second mostimproved country in the effort to curbcorruption. The group immediatelyreplied by disowning Mr. President’sclaim.

The President claimed that Nigeriais generating 5,000 MW of electricity;the Transmission Company of Nigeriadebunked that claim and said that atno time has the country electricitygeneration capacity reached a peak of5000MW.

A road project (known as fivejunctions), which was executed byEdo State government under AdamsOshiomhole, the Federal Governmentwas trying to be clever by half byshowcasing as one being undertakingby them.

The government always tell us thatthey are on top of the situation incurbing the menace of Boko Haram, only to be hearing the killing ofinnocent students in Mubi, marathonof bombing in Abuja and theabduction of the Chibok girls.

Only last year,, the government wastelling us it has created 1.3 millionsjobs. When the minister of Financewas asked where the ghost jobswere, she could not lay her hands onany.

Let me also borrow from one of thePDP chieftain, Mr Fani-Kayode, hesaid: “Permit me to make a painfulobservation here. I was thoroughlyappalled about the fact that when ourlamb President was asked about thelatest round of killings during his live“Presidential Media Chat”programme on Sunday evening, henot only told a lie to the world byclaiming that only “21 or 22 studentswere killed” at a time when the BBCand CNN had confirmed that at least45 bodies had been found”

This PDP-led Federal Governmentlives on lies, feed on lies, and operateon lies.

Osun 2014: Who Is Fooling Who?

By OLUMIDE LAWAL

•AREGBESOLA •OMISORE

COMMENTARIES have beenmade concerning the Osun2014 governorship

election convincingly won by theAPC flag bearer, Ogbeni RaufAregbesola.

There were losers, who havethe right to either raise theirvoices in favour or against theconduct of the election. This wasthe path of honour taken by theLabour Party and its flag-bearer,Alhaji Fatai Akinbade, whoconceded defeat andcongratulated Aregbesola. What atrue democrat Akinbade is?

However, the major oppositionparty in Osun, the PDP, has beencrying wolf where there is none.Again, they are entitled tofreedom of expression asenshrined in our Constitution. But through their utterances andactions, Osun PDP is standingtruth on its head to whip upsentiment. But one is happy thatdespite the odds put on the waysof the Osun electorate, beforeand during the election, with thedeployment of the so-calledfederal might, PDP was deniedvictory.

In order to give a dog a badname, to justify hanging it, theOsun PDP has gone to town towrongly assert that the twoofficials suspended by INEC, onone allegation or the other, connived to ‘rig election’ infavour of the APC. And in a jiffy,a press release was sent out bythe Osun PDP to confuse the

electorate on the issue. On the eve of the election, the

Electoral Officer (EO) forObokun Local Government,Anthony Olusegun Eshinoye, wassaid to have been arrested whileallegedly attempting to divertsome electoral materials to theresidence of a PDP big-wig in thecouncil area and he was promptlyhanded over to law enforcementagents. But what happenedthereafter is better imagined.

Be that as it may be, one ishappy that the Public RelationsOfficer of INEC in the State ofOsun, Mrs Adenike Tadese, hascategorically stated that thesuspension of the two INECofficials has nothing to do withelectoral malpractices to favourAPC, as the action resulted from“administrative lapses” on thepart of the officials, who are stillunder further investigation.

Having tried all kinds of behindthe scene maneuver, ranging froma call to change Osun ResidentElectoral Commissioner,Ambassador Rufus Akeju, whichwas effected ahead of the poll, tothe issue of deployment ofbattle-ready security operatives, which failed woefully, Osun PDPhas resorted to painting APC asthe tormentor and intimidator inthe election, whereas that isexactly what the Osun PDP show-cased.

Osun PDP should stop its

campaign of calumny againstINEC and APC and go to thetribunal to prove its case. If theOsun electorate refused to becowed into submission by thePDP, is it right for the party tocontinue to insult the collectiveintelligence of the people, whostood solidly behind their darlingparty-APC-and gave it the much-desired victory on August 9?

The APC thoroughly preparedfor the election relying on God and the good works of Aregbesola, who positivelyimpacted on the peoples’ lives, whereas the opposition party justwanted power for its sake and tosatisfy the yearnings of anindividual. They forgot thatultimate power belongs to God.But one good thing the nationalleadership of the PDP did on theelection was that it congratulatedAPC. Ditto President Jonathan. What therefore is the “stolenmandate” that Osun PDP wants toreclaim? Again, the tribunal willresolve the matter.

During the poll, manycommissioners, the first civiliangovernor of Osun, Alhaji IsiakaAdeleke, among other APCmembers, were intimidated, harassed and arrested by thesecurity operatives brought toOsun for no just cause. So, whowere the hunters and the hunted? The slogan of “we are going towar to capture Osun” by somePDP big wigs fell flat.

The Osun electorate was there

for the APC and Aregbesola 24/7 and shall continue to.

If I were Jeleel Adesiyan orMusiliu Obanikoro, I would haveresigned as minister, followingthe defeat handed to them by theenlightened electorate who, likethe biblical David, messed upthese GOLIATHS in their raw andforceful manner of wanting tocapture Osun.

Jonathan should, by now, knowthat these two ministers arepaper-weight politicians back athome, who could not win theirpolling units, as shown inAdesiyan’s case at Ago-Igbirapolling unit, Odeomu where hisparty lost the election.

I will like to appeal to APCteeming supporters to remainlike the Rock of Gibraltar behind Aregbesola.

Whatever impediments theopposition may wish to create inthe battle concerning the electionpetition tribunal shall beovercome.

I praise my boss, Senator IsiakaAdeleke, for being a gamechanger going by the good performance he recorded at the August 9, 2014 governorshipelection.

His experience at an hotel inOsogbo, sometime ago, hasturned out to be a blessing indisguise for him and the APC.

Why Ebola Is So DangerousTHE Ebola outbreak in West Africa

is the world’s deadliest to date andthe World Health Organization has

declared an international healthemergency as more than 2,100 peoplehave died of the virus in Guinea, Liberia,Sierra Leone and Nigeria this year.

What is Ebola?Ebola is a viral illness of which the

initial symptoms can include a suddenfever, intense weakness, muscle painand a sore throat, according to the WorldHealth Organization (WHO). And thatis just the beginning: subsequent stagesare vomiting, diarrhoea and - in somecases - both internal and externalbleeding.

The disease infects humans throughclose contact with infected animals, including chimpanzees, fruit bats andforest antelope.

It then spreads between humans bydirect contact with infected blood, bodilyfluids or organs, or indirectly throughcontact with contaminatedenvironments. Even funerals of Ebolavictims can be a risk, if mourners havedirect contact with the body of thedeceased.

The incubation period can last fromtwo days to three weeks, and diagnosisis difficult. The human disease has sofar been mostly limited to Africa, although one strain has cropped up inthe Philippines.

Healthcare workers are at risk if theytreat patients without taking the rightprecautions to avoid infection. Peopleare infectious as long as their blood andsecretions contain the virus - in somecases, up to seven weeks after theyrecover.

Where does it strike?

Ebola outbreaks occur primarily inremote villages in Central and WestAfrica, near tropical rainforests, saysthe WHO.

Bushmeat - from animals such as bats, antelopes, porcupines and monkeys - isa prized delicacy in much of West Africabut can also be a source of Ebola

It was first discovered in theDemocratic Republic of Congo in 1976since when it has mostly affectedcountries further east, such as Ugandaand Sudan.

Ebola deaths since 1976This year’s outbreak is unusual

because it started in Guinea, which hasnever before been affected, and isspreading to urban areas.

From Nzerekore, a remote area ofsouth-eastern Guinea, the virus hasspread to the capital, Conakry, andneighbouring Liberia and Sierra Leone.

A man who flew from Liberia toLagos in July was quarantined on hisarrival and later died of Ebola - the firstcase in Nigeria. One of the nurses whotreated him and an official who cameinto direct contact with him have sincedied.

Ebola casualtiesUp to 7 September2,226Ebola deaths - probable, confirmed

and suspected1,137 Liberia557 Guinea524 Sierra Leone8 NigeriaThe medical charity Medecins Sans

Frontieres (MSF) says the outbreak is“unprecedented” in the way the caseswere scattered in multiple locationsacross Guinea, hundreds of kilometresapart, and says it is a “race against time”

to check people who come into contactwith sick people.

Ebola: Mapping the outbreakEbola: Why is it this disease we fear? Can cultural practices spread Ebola?Ebola is spread through close physical

contact with infected people. This is aproblem for many in the West Africancountries currently affected by theoutbreak, as practices around religionand death involve close physical contact.

Hugging is a normal part of religiousworship in Liberia and Sierra Leone, andacross the region the ritual preparationof bodies for burial involves washing, touching and kissing. Those with thehighest status in society are oftencharged with washing and preparing thebody. For a woman this can includebraiding the hair, and for a man shavingthe head.

If a person has died from Ebola, theirbody will have a very high viral load.Bleeding is a usual symptom of thedisease prior to death. Those who handlethe body and come into contact with theblood or other body fluids are at greatestrisk of catching the disease.

MSF has been trying to make peopleaware of how their treatment of deadrelatives might pose a risk tothemselves. It is a very difficult messageto get across.

All previous outbreaks were muchsmaller and occurred in places whereEbola was already known - in Ugandaand the DR Congo for example. In thoseplaces the education message aboutavoiding contact has had years to enterthe collective consciousness. In WestAfrica, there simply has not been thetime for the necessary cultural shift.

The virus detective who

discovered Ebola

What precautions should I take?

Avoid contact with Ebola patients andtheir bodily fluids, the WHO advises. Donot touch anything - such as sharedtowels - which could have becomecontaminated in a public place.

Washing hands and improvinghygiene is one of the best ways to fightthe virus

Carers should wear gloves andprotective equipment, such as masks, and wash their hands regularly.

The WHO also warns againstconsuming raw bushmeat and anycontact with infected bats or monkeysand apes. Fruit bats in particular areconsidered a delicacy in the area ofGuinea where the outbreak started.

In March, Liberia’s health ministeradvised people to stop having sex, inaddition to existing advice not to shakehands or kiss. The WHO says men canstill transmit the virus through theirsemen for up to seven weeks afterrecovering from Ebola.

Fighting the fear and stigmatisationsurrounding Ebola is one of the greatestchallenges health workers face.

But health workers themselves arebecoming scared of treating patient, andare demanding better protective clothingwhen exposed to patients.

Ebola has already claimed the livesof dozens of doctors and nurses in theEbola-hit region, including SierraLeone’s only virologist and Ebola expert,Sheik Umar Khan.

This has put a further strain on thehealth services of these West Africanstates, which have long faced a shortageof doctors and hospitals.

The People’s Governor of the State of Osun, Ogbeni RaufAregbesola, has been re-elected to carry on for another term of fouryears.

Ogbeni Aregbesola recorded a resounding success in the just-concluded election.

The election shows that the Governor is well embraced by all thepeople of the State of the Virtuous.

ASUU Uniosun Faults GoverningCouncil On Undue InterferenceTHE Academic Staff Union of

Universities (ASUU), UNIOSUNChapter, has faulted the claim made by

the Chairman of the University Council,Professor Gabriel Olawoyin, that its Chairman,Dr. Abiona Oluseye, was personalising theunion’s demand.

In a refutal signed and made available toOSUN DEFENDER at the end of theircongress by its Chairman; Dr. AbionaOluseye and Secretary; Wande Olaosebikanand other members of the union executivecouncil, the union declared that the reportaccredited to Professor Olawoyin as amanifestation of mischief, malice and acalculated attempt to divide the union.

They maintained that ASUU is a union ofintellects, which could not be used forpursuing personal agenda, adding thatanybody, who thought along that directionwas indeed out of tune with universityadministration of modern days.

According to the congress: “It is also verystrange to read that Professor Olawoyin-ledcouncil accused Dr. Abiona and others yet-to-be-named as agents being used toperpetrate the culture of corruption, when thecouncil itself is an embodiment of fraud.”

They therefore, challenged the Prof.Olawoyin-led Council to give reasons why ithad to prepare sitting allowances for Mr. RemiOlowude even when he did not attend Councilmeetings.

“We give kudos to people of integrity asrepresented by Mr. Remi Olowude forrejecting cheques raised in his name for suchpurposes. What can be more fraudulent thanthis?”

The union accused Prof. Olawoyin of thefollowings:

Stoppage of Internally Generated Revenuedriven programmes of the university whichincluded Postgraduate programme, IJMB andPart-Time Degree which had been duly

accredited by the National UniversitiesCommission (NUC).

Refusal to approve therecommendations of the universitymanagement on the payment of promotionarrears of staff members.

Cancellation of Prof. Temi Ologunorisaled panel report in favour of Prof. WaleOmole panel’s report which was doctoredto deal with some targetted personalitiesin the university and

Illegal cancellation of appointments ofinternal members of staff who repsondedto the advertisements and after goingthrough the due process were foundappointable by the Appointments andPromotions Committee of the Universitywhich was a committee of Council dulyconstituted by law and referring to it asthe Vice – Chancellor’s Appointments &Promotions Committee.

Describing it as unjust, UNIOSUNASUU stated that its leadership would notfold its arms.

They challenged the Council under theleadership of Prof. Gabriel Olawoyin to apublic debate on the issues at hand so asto prove its assertion that the universitymanagement was using ASUU –UNIOSUN’s leadership to foster a cultureof corruption, irresponsibility anddisregard for due process in the university.

“The onus is on him to prove thesegrievous allegations; after all he whoasserts must prove”, it added.

They also called on Ogbeni RaufAdesoji Aregbesola, Governor of the Stateof Osun and Visitor to the younguniversity to call the Governing Councilto order or get them removed if they hadnothing to offer the university.

OPINION

Metuh, PDP’s Broken MegaphonePOOR Olisa Metuh. In him, we see a man

who derives perverse enjoyment inpublicly demonstrating that he occupies

a position that is much too big for him.Through his own actions, he is foundwanting. Through his own words, he showsthat silence would be his best policy.

In his latest tirade, Metuh seeks to criticizethe APC because of the party’s reaction tothe departure of the dour yet overlyambitious Tom Ikimi from the APC. Strangethat Metuh feels he must leap to the rescueof such a ruthless and shameless politicalfighter as Ikimi. Stranger still is that Metuhseems more concerned about the Ikimideparture than the APC is as a party. Ikimisuffers from delusion of grandeur and in theFop he will find his co-travellers. He needshis ego constantly fed and in pop he will belucky not to have it starved.

His recent attempt to denigrate theleadership of the APC, its leadership and theperson of Bola Tinubu is merely the rantingof an ant. It falls within the same time wornand tenuous arguments. It offers no freshthinking, but simply offends our nostrils. Like, his paymaster, Olisa IS shadow boxing wherethere are no shadows. He is engaged indynamic inactivity. His feeble attempt to talkdown Tinubu is easily dismissible. If not forthe pop that gave him a job, his ilk will neverhave such temerity to speak the garbage theyspill out.

Metuh seems to occupy a strange universewhere the personal feelings of Ikimi are moreimportant to him and his mission as PDPmouthpiece than are the national security andwelfare of millions of our people. Strange man.Strange party. The PDP represents everythingthat is wrong with Nil7eria. A party of ill-bredsand career politicians. Metuh s babysittingservices is more needed by a cruel Presidencythat profits from the misfortunes of the

citizens. The fact of the matter is that Metuh

thought Ikimi’s departure would be abombshell, fatally wounding the APC. Hewas set to take advantage of the matter. He may even have huddled with the carpetbagging Ikimi to help him craft his evilepistles against the APC. However, thebomb Metuh expected turned out to be asmall, damp firecracker that could not evenillicit a spark much less an explosion.

Investing hope that Ikimi’s departurewould seriously injure the APC, Metuhwas not only barking up the wrong tree,he had entered the wrong forest. Metuhhad entered deep into fantasyland. Thus, let us endeavor to give him

a piece of reality so that he might stopthese flights of fancy and actually devotesome time to the serious questions mostNigerians now ask of his party, PDP whenit comes to their security and economicwelfare.

In a sane party, Olisa Metuh would beconfined to the fringes. But here he isgiven a national platform to insult thesensibilities of millions of Nigerians withhis twisted logic and rationalization of theactions of Nigeria’s most inept and cluelessleadership. Rather than face up to the

failures of the PDP government, he seemshave been placed on full time detailattacking the APC and its leaders. Whenyou have no positive account of your own,and then attack that of the other party. Thisseems to be his motto and strategy. It isboth naked and corrupt.

Olisa Metuh represents the pettiness andarrogance that has made this governmentblind to the fact that unprecedented tragedyhad occurred on their watch while they werebusily preening themselves and reveling inthe sweet soft things that hi office providesto those who care mostly about themselves.

While Boko Haram attacks us with guns, bombs and bullets, our very governmentfights us with deceit, trickery and lack ofmoral courage. Boko Haram assaults thebody but this government and ruling partyambush our national spirit. So that we mayreach our finer destiny, both need to go andto take their broken megaphone, OlisaMetuh, with them.

It would behoves the errant messengerof the errant ruling party to waste less timein his sophomoric examination of the APCinternal dynamics and spend more timetrying to figure out and explain the grandfailures of policy and promise committedby the party to which he is so proudly amember. Why hasn’t this governmentrescued the girls of Chibok who have now

been missing for nearly SIX months? Itseems we are no closer to their freedom thenwe were the day they were abducted fromtheir families.

Why did the government deploy so vastan array and arsenal of security forces andweaponry, including hooded gunmen, tointimidate and scare people during the recentelections in Ekiti and Osun? Is this aharbinger of what is to come during the 2015general elections? If government musterssuch an energetic armed presence inpeaceful states, how come it can’t deploysuch a massive contingent in order tocheckmate Boko Haram advances innorthern Nigeria. Book Haram appears tobe gaining ground daily, even declaring acaliphate. Yet, Metu is Silent to thismomentous challenge to nationalsovereignty and safety. Yet, his pen dripswith poison because some APC membersand Tinubu tell the truth about Ikimi.

The APC is undergoing a winnowingprocess. Those whose personal views orambitions are incompatible with the partywill leave. Instead of hurting APC, this helpsthe party because it makes it more coherentand united to her core principles. That thePDP can be home to anything and anybodyno matter how craven is not a virtue. Theability of the PDP to be an indiscriminatereceptacle only shows the party’s moralbankruptcy; it is not evidence of ecumenicalappeal.

In this winnowing process, numerouspeople may depart but again the APC willbe the Detter, more harmonious for it. Ikimileft and the APC still stands.

By ADE OLUGBOTEMIIT is fashionable today for

“Men of God” to put onan emblem of

distinction, with a view toaccording them respect andtreat them like second-in-command to the Creator. This in itself was heavenly-ordained because asMessengers of God, theyare to be referenced. Theyare to be holy at all times,so as to be found worthy by God toreceive divine instructions that willsubsequently be delivered to otherhuman beings, who are incapable ofgaining insight into the celestial realmbecause they are ‘not ordained’ to doso. However, the attitude of some ofthese people of God recentlyapparently calls to question the claimthat they have minds that can wait on,and receive from their Maker.

In the early days of humanexistence, the priests were usuallyconsulted to choose leaders for thepeople of God. The priest would thenconsult God by fervently praying fordirectives that will guide them to pickthe person ordained to lead the people. When there were no clear-cutdirectives, lots would prayerfully becast, so that the chosen one wouldhave the lot falling on him. In all cases, the choice would be right because ofstrict abstinence from extraneousinfluence capable of modeling personalthoughts towards undue subjectivity.Any leader that emerged through sucha neutral process, usually had nochoice than to work in tandem withpeople’s expectations.

Our clergies today take to untowardmeans to chart a course for thepeople, who are blindly followingthem. Most of them have becomemere prognosticators, who drawcounsels from sources other thanGod’s to pave way for contemporaryspeculation of man that leads manyastray. They project the message as ifit has emanated from God and oftencompound the problems ofundiscerning folks that see them assuper medium to know the mind ofGod. Because of the special respectpeople have for them, they have led somany to reasoning wilderness, whichis basically a realm of confusion and aparallel line to the path of divineinspiration.

The recently-concluded State ofOsun gubernatorial election reallygave credence to this standpoint, whendesperation pushed people in the mainopposition party, the PeoplesDemocratic Party (PDP) to employ allantics to win voters to their side. Theyturned so fallacious that they almostexhausted the contents of lies’repository. The whole process wasunprecedented in the history ofelectioneering process in Nigeria.Added to this was the profundity ofthe whole mess coming from PDP’sarsenal. Strange multiplication of‘doubting Thomases’ pervaded theentire political atmosphere of the state;to the end that the bravery of thevaliant literally evaporated from them.

The case was made worse by thetacit support and backing given the liesfabricators by some ‘men of God’ whovirtually turned the altar of God to aninstrument meant to also fabricate andpropagate lies. The tenacity of theirapplications sent serious confusionacross and beyond the state thatpeople started wondering whetherthere was anything profitable inpositive innovation that has becomethe hallmark of governance in theState of Osun of late. Devil’s agentsbehind the pulpits recklessly fed theircongregations with spiritual junks fromhell. They openly told their membersthat Governor Aregbesola had beenrejected by God because of his anti-Christ posture; praying that the mightyhand of God might come heavilyagainst him.

Many fake Spiritualists in inventedcassocks became prayer warriorsagainst the incumbent governor. Theyentered into marathon fasting on hillsand mountains and descended afterdays of dry fast, white fast, and allmanners of fast to vaunt themselves, and boast about that the government

of the State of Osun has beenwithdrawn from Ogbeni Rauf AdesojiAregbesola. Inciting handbills weredistributed by so many pastors, whilemany of them ordered their churchmembers to have nights of vigil to prayagainst Aregbesola’s victory at polls.Insightful text messages found theirways into people’s handsets; many ofthem declaring war against the personof Aregbesola. The barrage wasendless.

It is noteworthy to recount howmany of us were vilified andcastigated. Without soundingsanctimonious, we only desired thatthe Will of God be established. Someof us who were openly branded neverreceived a dime from any quarters. We only developed passion for positivechange that will show that God ismerciful and good to us. Wedemanded that God should shamethose who were going about to fanmischief and errors, so that people willknow their true God, Who brings Hiscounsel to pass in the midst of Hispeople. We never went to any prayermountains, but with faith in God, we

fasted and prayed that Godshould manifest His power. Thatwas exactly what happened onAugust 9, 2014, when against allodds, God proved His deity as aGod of war against injustice, before Whom all powers mustbow.

The good people of this statemust be aware that those men of

God have begun a new process ofsatanic prayer to overturn what Godperfected on August 9, 2014. Theyhave gotten another gratification thatis propelling their energy to have themruled by their minds. They are seekingfor helping hand in human judgment atelection tribunal, and I am sure theywill find one at the end of their arms.At the end of the whole process, theywill find out that God’s arm is mighty, and that it is powerful enough tocompliment the frailties of man.People, who love progress, must dailypray for God’s will to manifest uponthe adjudication of man that is oftenmisguided by emotional whims.

We are at the verge of revival in ourchequered history. We are hoping thatthe ecstasy that greeted thedeclaration of August 10, 2014 will notbe punctured by any human error thathas branded our country as a nation ofdespots, whose discretions havepermanently condemned us to a realmof Lilliputians that supports a notion ofretrogression in global moves towardssocio-political emancipation. For ourrecalcitrant clergies to get it right andfulfill God’s mandate upon their lives, they must quickly respond to theirprimary ministry of praying for thegood of their ‘Jerusalem’( which inthis case is Nigeria) that is currentlyenmeshed in multifaceted crisis.

It is in Nigeria’s prosperity that theclergies’ fulfillments lie. Nobody in hisright senses will feel satisfied with thecurrent situation in which mostNigerians are ready to flee the countryfor any more economically-viablecountries of the world. We must lookbeyond any religious consideration tohave our problem fixed and advancesteadily to a bay of safety. If Nigeriaremains in her problem, no pastor orbishops, or whatever any titles theycarry, will worth any while. They musttherefore be apolitical in their duty toseek God’s face, so that Nigeria canattain her full potentials under anypolitical party or politician.

As we move towards year 2015,which many people consider as a yearof destiny, we must be courageous tocritically examine our situation and seewhere we have been missing the pointall along. If Peoples Democratic Partyand Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan arenot the media of greatness andpolitical emancipation, as some of usare sensing, they should develop largehearts to accommodate what Godintends to do; so that we can all beginto enjoy together and subsequentlyfeel proud of an emerging Nigeria, where it becomes possible to make fullproof of individual innate talents.Enough is enough with our beingunnecessarily sentimental.OSUN DEFENDER is published by Moremi Publishing House Limited, Promise Point Building, Opposite Guaranty Trust Bank GTB, Gbongan Road, Osogbo, State of Osun.
