PDP Earmarks N6bn For Osun, Ekiti Guber Polls

THERE are speculations that the Peoples DemocraticParty (PDP) has concluded plans to lure voters toelect its candidates in the forthcoming gubernatorial

elections in Osun and Ekiti states with N6 billion.

Misinformation, Bane Of National Integration- Laoye-TomoriTHE deputy governor of the State of Osun, Otunba

(Mrs) Titi Laoye-Tomori, had stated thatmisinformation and wrong perception from the mass

media can lead to the disintegration of not only thecommunity, but the nation as a whole.

Laoye-Tomori made thisobservation during acourtesy visit to her officein Osogbo by the executivemembers of the South-WestZone of the BroadcastingOrganisation of Nigeria(BON) last Thursday.

She reminded the mediachiefs on the need forobjectivity in their variousreports and shunmisinformation andmisrepresentation ofgovernment policies and

programmes.Making inference to some

misrepresentations of thevarious programmes andpolicies of the stategovernment in some mediaon school re-classificationexercise, the deputygovernor carpeted the mediareport on islamization of thestate by the Ogbeni RaufA r e g b e s o l a - l e dadministration.

She advised the mediahouses and media executives

to engage in issue basedreportage instead of beingsentimental and subjectivein their reportage.

The deputy governoralso enumerated some of theachievements ofAregbesola in the area ofcreation of 40.000 jobs forthe youths, building ofstate-of-the-art schools, construction of schools,O’Meal school feedingprogrammes and manyothers.

She added that the stategovernment has not beenpartisan in all its policies andprogrammes to the people ofthe state.

Otunba Tomori therefore

counseled the mediaoperators to projectNigeria’s cultural and moralvalues, rather thandegenerated programmesthat project the country inbad light.

In his speech earlierduring the visit, theChairman of BON in theSouth West Zone, MrAyinde Soaga, said the visitwas to acquit the mediachiefs with thedevelopmental programmesand policies of thegovernment and also to rallysupport for the annualprogramme of theassociation coming up inCalabar next month.

The State commissionerfor Information andStrategy, Mr Sunday Akerelauded the policies of thestate government and itsnon-partisan posture by notinterfering in programmesand running of all the state-owned media houses.

He therefore urged themedia chiefs to availthemselves the opportunityof their visit to the state toaccess the developmentalprojects of Ogbeni RaufA r e g b e s o l a ’ sadministration.

Some dignitaries at thevisit were the Prince SojiFadehan, Mr Sunday Akere,Honourable Kola Akanjiamong others.

Arabic Centre Marks30th Anniversary

THE Centre for Islamic and Arabic Studies, Konda, Ilobu,Irepodun Local Government Council Area of the Stateof Osun, has rolled out drums to mark its 30th

Anniversary.

Investigations revealedthat the party is relying onPresident GoodluckJonathan-led FederalGovernment, which isdesperate to win election inthe region in 2015 to actualisethe plan as a test-case for thegeneral elections.

The party is set to floatcooperative groups amongtraders and artisans in Osunand Ekiti, with a view tolending them funds for theirbusinesses, in return for theirvotes in the forthcominggubernatorial polls in the twostates.

It was gathered that thecooperative groups aretailored after that of the Stateof Osun, but the PDP factionof the group would not beregistered with any bank, hence, it would givebeneficiaries the mindset offree money.

The Federal Governmentis mopping up money fromcirculation by regularlyreducing federal allocation tostates, as an act ofdesperation to deal withopposition parties ahead of2015 polls, particularly theAPC states in the South-West, with a view to

curtailing developmentalprojects in the region.

This, findings revealed, remains the only way thePDP-led FederalGovernment believed it canset the people against theAPC in the zone.

In the party thinking, when the PDP starts to dollout money to traders and

artisan cooperative groups, the APC would not have anyexplanation to offer for notmaking money available tothe masses.

Apart from Lagos andOgun states, the other APCstates in the region are at themercy of the statutoryallocation from the federationaccount, particularly, theState of Osun, which isamong the least on theallocation table.

This is due to thedeliberate move by theFederal Government to starve

it of fund to complete itsprojects across the state, and, if the plan works out,the PDP would, during itscampaign rallies, launchattack on the APC-ledadministration, alleging it ofabandoning projects.

Also, the PDP members inthe state in a way haveconfirmed its nationalsecretariat’s plan by goinground the state to tell tradersand youths to form groupsthrough which they canbenefit from the party’slargesse.

•The detonated explosive device.

By SHINA ABUBAKAR The party in Osun, according to sources closeto the secretariat, is bankingon the N3 billion per state towin votes and find its wayback to power, afterdislodging the APC throughany means possible.

Part of their strategy is thecampaign of calumny itlaunched against theIndependent NationalElectoral Commission, calling for the sack of theOsun State ResidentElectoral Commissioner, MrRufus Akeju.

A statement by the planningcommittee said the anniversaryprogrammes will hold at theCentre Premises, Oke Konda,Ilobu on Saturday, March 8 and

Sunday, March 9, 2014.Major activities lined up for

the anniversary, according tothe planning committee, include the launch of N100million endowment fund for thedevelopment of the institute onSaturday and conferment ofIslamic titles on dignitaries, who have contributed to thedevelopment of the religion andthe centre.

No One Can Shatter The Peace Of Osun•Says Govt After Explosive Device Was Detonated In Osogbo

By SHINA ABUBAKAR

THE State Government of Osun has reiterated thatno one can shatter the current peace being enjoyedin the state, just as commercial activities were

paralysed along Station road in Osogbo, capital of the Stateof Osun, as bomb scare forced bankers to close businessabruptly last Tuesday.

Findings disclosed that astaff of First Bank situatedat the ever-busy areadiscovered the material andalerted the security officialsof the bank, who quicklyalerted the police.

It was learnt that whenthe Anti-Bomb Squad of theNigeria Police arrived thescene, they had difficultydetonating the alleged bombmaterial, prompting thebanks across the statecapital to close businessactivities for the day.

The alert from the bank, according to a source in thebank, was sent to otherbanks, which quickly puttheir banks under lock andkey.

Also, shop owners at thecommercial area, werethrown into confusion, asthe news of the inability ofthe police to detonate thebomb spread to theadjoining areas.

The staff of the bank, who pleaded anonymity, told OSUN DEFENDER that

the bomb was sighted beforeraising alarm and a call wasput to security operatives.

Eyewitnesses in the areaconfirmed that a material wasfound in the bank, but couldnot ascertain whether it isindeed a bomb.

In a swift reaction to thedevelopment, the stategovernment reminded thepeople of the various pro-active measures taken bygovernment of the State ofthe Virtuous on security oflives and property

generally, while calling onthe security agencies to getto the root of the strangediscovery in Osogbo andtell the whole world how thedevice found its way into abanking hall.

According to a statementissued and signed by theDirector, Bureau ofCommunication andStartegy in the Office of theGovernor, Mr. SemiuOkanlawon; “Consideringthe usually impregnablefortification of banksthrough their variousscreening machines, whichdetect metals and otherobjects of lesser dangers, itis unthinkable how thedevice scaled through thisfortress of the bank beforeit got into the banking hall, where it was discovered.

“To be specific, wesuspect a deliberate foulplay in the antics of thosewho desire to create a senseof insecurity in this statethrough their variousmachinations andmanipulations.”

The state governmenthowever revealed itsconviction of the readinessof the security agencies to

conduct a thoroughinvestigation on thedevelopment in order tostrengthen the assurancesof the people and visitorsthat Osun remains a safehaven for businesses andpleasure.

“We are however, assured of the readiness ofthe security agencies toconduct a thoroughinvestigation on thedevelopment in order tostrengthen the assurancesof our people and visitorsthat Osun remains a safehaven for businesses andpleasure,” Okanlawonemphasized.

Since the advent of thecurrent administration in thestate under Ogbeni RaufAregbesola, the state hasremained peaceful andinviting to more people everthan before in her 21-yearhistory, the medium hasdiscovered.

However, efforts by themedium to confirm theincident from the policeheadquarters in the stateproved abortive, as thephone line of the policespokesperson wasswitched off.

PDP Can’t Rule Yorubaland Again - Osun APCBy SHINA ABUBAKAR

“SHORT of war or brutish violence, there is no way thePeoples Democratic Party (PDP) can capture, recaptureor reclaim any state in Yorubaland again.

“And the reason issimple: the destruction ofthe developmentinfrastructure created by thelate Chief Obafemi Awolowofor the well-being of Yorubanation was ruthlesslydestroyed by the PDPbetween 1999 and 2010 andthe Yoruba nation will neverforgive the PDP for it.”

This statement wascontained in a pressstatement issued in Osogboby Osun All ProgressivesCongress (APC) Director ofPublicity, Research andStrategy, Barrister KunleOyatomi in reaction to thereported plan of the PDP torecapture the West, startingfrom Ekiti and Osun statesthis year.

The APC reminded thePDP that it was during itsreign that some Yorubaleaders were killed withouttrace of their killers and theessential infrastructure forhuman capital development,as well as the industrialinfrastructure that Awolowolaid down, were recklesslydestroyed or sold off tocompetitors of the racewithin Nigeria and to foreigninterests.

Since 2010 whenAwolowo loyalistsassembled in ActionCongress of Nigeria (ACN),

now merged with otherpolitical parties to form theAPC, finally recaptured allstates in the West, exceptOndo, that the Yorubanation has been trying toreconstruct itself to attainthe standard that Awo leftand move forward fromthere.

“It is thereforeinconceivable, that thesepeople who have been sohurt by the PDP will for anyreason whatsoever vote thatparty into power again.”

The APC argued that onbalance, the PDPexperience, both at theFederal and state levels, forthe Yoruba people was andis an unmitigated disaster, from which people are stillstruggling to recover.

“Our educationalinstitutions were destroyed;our leadership in businessand industry wasstrangulated between 1999and 2010. The greatagricultural infrastructurelaid down by Awolowo wasleft to rot and/or destroyed.

“Our children were forcedout of schools, when theseschools became non-accessible to them becauseof Federal characternonsense. And today theYoruba suffer the worseform of injustice through

marginalisation inpractically all aspects ofgovernance at the centre, ina country, where they wereonce the pace-setters.

“All of this happeningunder the PDP rule.”

The APC stressed that ascurrently constituted, thePDP lacks the personnel,

the intellectual capacity andthe philosophicalbackground to provide theYoruba people with any formof well-being from Lagos toAbeokuta, to Ibadan toOsogbo, to Akure and toAdo Ekiti, because thepeople’s experience withthem was that of

monumental failure.The APC therefore called

on Yoruba people to bewary of those politicians ofpreys assembled in the PDP,because all they are out todo is to feed fat on theYoruba people and theirresources.

Why PDP Wants Osun INEC Boss, Akeju OutBy ISMAEEL UTHMAN

THE consistent calls for the removal of State of OsunResident Electoral Commissioner (REC), AmbassadorRufus Akeju by the rattled Peoples Democratic Party

(PDP) might not be unconnected with the failure of the INECboss to compromise and allow himself to be used by the PDP,said the Alliance of Collaborating Political Parties (ACPP).

The State of Osun chapterof the ACPP said theunprecedented defeat sufferedby the PDP in the 2011 generalelections, where the thenAction Congress of Nigeria(ACN) candidates swept all theelected offices in the state, waspart of the reason the PDP iscurrently aggrieved with Akeju.

According to the ACPP, thePDP is not comfortable with

the fairness anduncompromised principle ofAkeju, hence has to resort toblackmailing the INEC boss, with a view to relieving him ofhis duty in Osun and influencethe transfer of a compromisedINEC official to the state.

Addressing a pressconference on Monday inOsogbo, the ACPP maintained

that the PDP’s call for Akeju’sremoval is a ground plan of theparty to rig the August 9, 2014governorship election, and alsoprepare an excuse for its failure,if it loses the election.

The opposition partieschallenged the PDP to comeforward with any evidenceproving Akeju’s misconductand illicit act, saying that theparty’s allegation against theINEC umpire was baseless andbarbaric without evidence.

It maintained that the 2011general elections supervised byAkeju were free, fair andcredible to the extent that onlya House of Representatives’candidate of the PDP,

Honourable Wole Oke, couldcontest the results of theelection at the tribunal andeventually lost at the court.

The ACPP condemned whatit described as untowardattitude of the PDP and its‘illegal attempt to scandalizethe electoral body withbaseless and false allegations, saying that the call for Akeju’sremoval was aimed at achievingsome sinister agenda.

Describing the protest heldby some youths against Akejuin Osogbo recently, asshameful and gathering of somehandful of disgruntledelements, who were paid forthe dirty job by the PDP, the

ACPP said the PDP’s activitiesagainst Akeju do not representthe position of the oppositionparties in the state.

The ACPP said: “The truthof the matter is that while otherpolitical parties are busymobilizing their supporters inthe forthcoming election, thesePDP elements are hell-bent oncreating a situation where theywill be able to explain awaytheir impending doom in theelection, as it is very clear thatthe entire Osun people hadrejected them.”

However, the ACPP calledon the Independent ElectoralCommission (INEC) todisregard the PDP’s call and do

Osun PDP Allegation Against INECPedestrian - Attorney-General

THE Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justicein the State of Osun, Barrister Wale Afolabi, hasdescribed the recent campaign against the State

Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr Rufus Akeju,as calumnious and unfounded.

In a statement issued andmade available to journalists in

the state on Monday, Afolabidescribed the attack on the

person of the REC as ‘not onlypedestrian, but idle’.

It would be recalled that theState of chapter of the PDPhad disclosed in a nationalnewspaper last week thatINEC committed contempt ofcourt.

Afolabi said Akeju is neitheran agent of the stategovernment, nor that of theruling party in the state, describing the allegation as apropaganda orchestrated by thePDP.

Reacting to the issue of courtcontempt, Afolabi disclosedthat the PDP played to thegallery, as the case was stayedby an order of an Appeal Court, enabling the electoral umpire toconduct the 2011 election inthe state.

The statement reads: “Thetruth here is that during thegeneral elections in April 2011,the PDP approached theFederal High Court sitting atOsogbo in suit No FHC/OS/26/2011 by way of originatingsummons, seeking for thedetermination of 5 (five) issuesall relating to the competence/legality or otherwise of theREC, Mr. Akeju to conduct theApril 2011 general elections inthe State of Osun.

“An order preventing theREC, State of Osun fromconducting general elections inthe state was granted on the28th March, 2011 and whichorder the INEC has appealedagainst at the Court of Appeal,Akure.

“It is important to

emphasize again that theinterlocutory orders granted bythe Federal High Court,Osogbo has been properlyappealed against and thenceput the enforcement andfurther proceedings in the casein abeyance, pending theoutcome of the appeal.

“Curiously, it was even thecounsel to the Plaintiff/nowRespondent (PDP), against allknown practices, thatapproached the lower court forstay of proceeding. Thepractice, which the courtdescribed as “curious andbizarre”, albeit was granted andthe proceedings stayed.

As a result of theapplication, the Attorney-General said: “The originatingsummons and the prayerssought therein were in respectof April 2011 general elections. It is trite and an elementaryprinciple of law that no courtwill grant what is not soughtor prayed.

“Therefore, the impressionthat the court gave a perpetualorder against INEC restrainingits officer from conducting anyelection in the State of Osun isnot only erroneous, mischievous or at best, adisplay of ignorance of thisuniversal principle of law.

“The order made by thecourt and the competence ofthe said originating summonsis at present a subject ofAppeal at the Court of Appeal,Akure.

It was the counsel to theplaintiff in the suit (PDP), whocuriously sought and obtainedthe stay of proceedings of hisown suit,” the commissioneradded.

Defence counsel, Mr S.

Gbenle, applied for the bailof the accused person in themost liberal term, saying thatthe accused person will notjump bail if granted.

He maintained that themagistrate has thediscretionary power to grantbail, adding that the suspectwould provide crediblesureties to guarantee hisreadiness to face trial.

However, the prosecutor,Micheal Ubi opposed thebail application; on theground that the offence wasserious in nature.

He further stated that ifthe accused person was

granted bail, he wouldinterfere in the investigationand make it impossible toarrest his accomplicesbelieved to be still at-large.

Ubi then urged the courtnot to grant the accusedperson bail, saying he wasnot ready to face trial andwould only jeopardise thecourse of justice.

Presiding Magistrate,Olusola Aluko, howeveradmitted the accusedperson to bail in the sum ofN100,000 and two suretiesin like sum beforeadjourning the matter tillMarch 29, 2014 for mention.

ETHICAL ISSUES?

the Nigeria National Petroleum Cor-poration (NNPC), and which has alsosadly led to drastic reduction in alloca-tions to states.

This is a damning condemnation of thegovernment at the center. It also showsthe difference between the two ap-proaches. For example, the central gov-ernment is just prepared to as it wereswim along with the tide. Whereas incontradistinction the government of thestate of Osun really wants to make aconcerted effort to break out of the vi-cious circle of boom and bust. Here thedifference in approach is clear.

The emphasis placed on growing thestate’s internally generated revenue(IGR) is important. It is a very sensibleway out of breaking out of the depen-dency syndrome and unhealthy relianceon the centre. As the Ogbeni stated in-novative financing is essential to providethe necessary financial structure for mostof the state’s developmental projects. This is a commendable example of theOgbeni’s capacity to think outside of the

box.

Think outside of the box, thiscontrarian has actually done. Nota-bly for example in being able to usenew emerging financial instrumentssuch as the sukuk. A key element hereis that the Ogbeni appreciates theneed for the use of ‘social capital’.Social capital is more than importantat this stage of development. It fulfillsthe need to direct long-term capitaland finance as a way of developingthe state’s social and physicalinfrastructural base. It is only a co-habitation of the state and the privatesector through Public Private Partner-ships (PPP) that can achieve this.

This the Ogbeni realizes. Thismeans that co-partnerships in this di-rection will be intensified in the yearsahead. The enhancement of prudentmanagement of meager resources andthe emphasis on social capital will cer-tainly help to deepen the state’s de-velopmental base. Furthermore it willlead to social cohesion and social soli-darity. This has already manifested it-

self. Osun state has demonstrablyknown peace for the first time in a longwhile.

Gone for example are the days ofblood and thunder under Oyinlola an-cient regime. This is as a result of theongoing socio-economic transforma-tion. Employment generation for ex-ample is absorbing a lot of hitherto rest-less unemployed youth. A future is nowbeing created for them. This means thatthere is less canon- fodder for peoplelike the discredited Iyiola Omisore touse and subsequently dump.

We commend the symbol of our as-pirations in the state of Osun for thepolicy thrusts in this budget. Through itthe foundation for the construction of anew era in Osun state is being laid. Aglorious future awaits a much deniedpopulace. The expected overwhelmingendorsement of the Ogbeni through re-election this year will further consoli-date this. In the state of Osun, we areon our way to ‘life more abundant.’ Andabout time too.

Social Solidarity And PoliticalEconomy At The Time Of Aregbesola

“Some men they think about thingsthat have happened and askthemselves, why? For myself I havedreams about all those things thatnever were and then I ask myself, whynot?”

SENATOR Robert FrancisKennedy gave the admonition ofthe Roman philosopher fresh

impetus when he used it as his raisond’etre for his ill-fated presidential bid in1968.

The Editorial Board of IndependentNewspapers Limited also anchored onthis proposition when considering andeventually in making the Osun statehelmsman, Engineer Rauf Aregbesolaits man-of-the-year 2013.

In a dismal landscape, men likeAregbesola stand out. He is a significantforce in presenting a very much neededalternative perspective. A clearalternative is very much needed in orderto break out of the present long-jam ofperennial underachievement.Aregbesola’s intervention in the polityrepresents a new wave of thinking. Thislinks theory (in this instanceAregbesola’s intellectual preparation)with praxis (his performance in practicalgovernance).

In a lot of ways Aregbesolarepresents a throwback to the past. Thepast in many ways was far more

edifying. Tune was when the politicalactors came into office, armed with awell worked out manifesto. Suchpreparation has helped to act as aroadmap and a veritable compass withwhich to navigate the ship of state.

Preparation for office is crucial. Inthe end it’ shows. Aregbesola’spreparation manifests itself in the formof the six-point agenda on whi.ch he ranfor office. It is a mission statement ofwhat he will do in office. Unlike thosewho sell the electorate a falseprospectus, he has been true to hiscommitment.

Aregbesola has delivered by aligningadministration in such a way as torekindle the concept of the socialcontract in governance. The long yearsof military governance inevitablydestroyed the very centrality of a socialcontact, which is a societal pact betweenthe political establishment and those theygovern. The military did not need andindeed could not contemplate such a pactin the first place. It would have been acontradiction in terms anyway for suchis the nature of dictatorships.

A significant wave inspired by peoplelike Aregbesola is that the concept of asocial contract is back on the frontburner. The obligations of governmentsare now clear. In the case of Aregbesolathis obligations are being met across allthe sectors.

This has been met through theinstrumentality of the streamlining of the

public finances. Vitally under his watcha hitherto chaotic and opaque publicfinance system has been made open andaccountable. Technically it is now basedon a performance planning budgetsystem. This has delivered the goods. The latest budget for instance sees 55%been allocated to capital votes. This is apractical translation of accepting a socialcontract which is based on building upthe physical and social infrastructure. No infrastructure will be built under aframework in which recurrentexpenditure takes the lion share of thebudget.

Across the sectors the state of Osunis seeing the construction of thefoundations for long-term sustainabledevelopment. Osun for this reason willnever be the same again. For exampleaccess to both Education and Healthfacilities has seen a quantum increase.

The opening up of opportunities hasbeen achieved by imaginative means.Examples abound. The provision of freemeals in the schools has pushed upenrollment figures. The introduction ofthe knowledge tablet, the Opon Imo hasbeen a masterstroke. Through thismechanism a whole new tech-savvygeneration is being brought up to havethe technological skills in order to becompetitive in the future. It’s a realgame-changer.

Again in the Health Sector theemphasis has been on the provision offree health services through primary

health care and secondary healthcare. There can now hardly be any family unitthat has not benefitted from wideraccess to health. The effect of all thison overall development is decisive. Fora healthy population is a more productiveand competitive economic unit.

As a result of the Aregbesolaintervention the political economy ofOsun has taken a lift. Increasedeconomic activity has led to moreemployment as well as an increase inthe Internally Generated Revenue. It’sa welcome development.

If we take a backward glance onething is clear. The state of Osun has gonethrough a transformation; there are nowtwo phases which will guide futurehistorians. These are pre and post-Aregbesola.

Aregbesola the mould-breaker hasinfused the polity with bold, imaginativeinitiatives. The long-term effect will bememorable. Under his watch thepromotion of social harmony hasreplaced the ancient regime’s polities ofdiscord. Social solidarity anchored on thebelief in the collective good of thecommunity is now paramount. Socialcohesion is cementing the new directionaway from consumption towardsbuilding a sustainable development.

History will judge him veryfavourably. Not the very least becausepre-Aregbesola was so unedifying.

Aregbesola Is An Icon Of New Thinking, Says Osun SpeakerIn this interview with Gbenga Faturoti, Speaker of the

Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Najeem Sallam, speaks on Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as Independent Man-of-the-Year 2013. Excerpts:

WHAT is your takeon Governor RaufA r e g b e s o l a

emerging as the Man of theYear 2013 of IndependentNewspapers?

Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola isone man who brings a lot to thetable of governance in Osun, and as the Speaker of the Stateparliament, I am privy to domany things this man is capableof, and the yardstick used by thenewspaper to elect Aregbesolais not only-unique, but also un-precedented in the history of theaward in this country, and I maysafely say that so it is in thiscontinent.

So, my ‘take on the award isthat the man, Aregbesola actu-ally merits the symbol of newthinking used as indicator, be-cause he brought so many ini-tiatives that were not found any-where in the world, he hasbrought development consid-ered unbelievable to the state, and I stand to be corrected, Hisschool feeding programme hasdrawn the attention of the in-ternational community to us, hiseducation policy coupled withtablet of knowledge ‘Opon Imo’has won the state international

accolades, and his employmentgeneration has placed Osun asthe seventh largest economy inthe country. However, it wasobvious that the resources ac-crued to the state could not evenfinance salaries and pensionalone. Aregbesola is eminentlyqualified.

Having had his achieve-ment acknowledged, don’tyou think the award is ca-pable of whitt1ing down hismorale to do more?

Thinking that award wouldwhittle down Aregbesola’s pas-sion is an underestimation ofwhat Ogbeni is. One thing isvery clear, Aregbesola is drivenand motivated to carve a nichefor himself in the (history of thisstate in particular, and the coun-try in general. So, all his moves, his projects, and initiatives areattributed to the creation of anew man who is complete men-tally, behaviourally, emotionally. And a cursory look at his six-point integral

action plait is interwovenaround the concept of emotionalintelligence called ‘Omoluabi’.

So, Aregbesola is not a manwho seeks power to hoodwinkor window dress, but to make a

lasting impression that will makehis name indelible in the plaqueof history. I think he reads ourlate sage, Chief ObafemiAwolowo like book, and he ismaking effort to re-establish thelost era, and I am sure he is stillrunning a time bound race thatdemands more for positive re-sult.

But the opposition insiststhat Aregbesola has notdone anything to warrantcelebration?

That is expected of the op-position, I was once in the op-position, and I know that our jobis to keep the government onits toes by pointing out its flawsand be silent on its achievement, but the opposition we have inOsun of today is not a thinkingopposition they are just beggingfor relevance, when they oughtdo their homework, and engagethe government in a construc-tive criticism, but they seem tolove blackmail and rumors asinstrument of propaganda. Suchan opposition does not worth adime. I pray they turn a newleaf, So that we can have a com-plete process of democracy inplace.

What is your advice onthe forthcoming governor-ship election?

I am confident that the goodpeople of Osun, the employerof any office holder would notbe hoodwinked into another ter-rible experiment that drew thestate back for years before theadvent of Aregbesola’s admin-istration. But what matters isfor the Independent NationalElectoral Commission (lNEC)

to do justice to the election bybeing free, £cur and credible.

Let it be known that whatobtained in Anambra electionwould not happen here, be-cause our people would notsleep until the winner is de-clared, that shows we are go-ing to positively make one man,one vote counts.

What Ife People say on the recent commissioning of Baptist Elemen-tary School, Ilare, Ile-Ife by Governor Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola of theState of Osun.

Hon Sola LawalIt is a great positive turn in Ile- Ife and the

only institution that can rival this architecturalmasterpiece is Obafemi Awolowo Universityin terms of concept, building and facilities.

For Ife indigenes, it is an unthinkable turnof event and that it is happening in ourgeneration. It is a wonderful experience and aclear demonstration of Ogbeni Aregbesola’svision of functional education for all andsundry, irrespective of one’s status in thesociety.

Oluomo Gbenga OwolabiThis is unprecedented and as an Ife chief, I

feel very proud of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola. The taste of pudding is in the eating. We’veseen what Aregbesola can do and he is stillworking. So, we should support him with ourvotes and prayers, so that he will return for asecond term in office to continue with thegood works.

Aristotle once said: “Political tools shouldbe given to those who will use themeffectively.” So Aregbesola should be given themandate to return for a second term in office.

Sooko Bunmi Adegoke, President, IfeRecreation Club

We, people of Ife, thank God and ObaOkunade Sijuwade, as well as our governor,

Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, for this edifice. Godwill keep protecting the governor. It is a goodthing.

Professor Moses AwogbadeThis is a model, a legacy that can only be

bequeathed to the people by a caring governor. There are few of this kind of school in thisnation. We were not privileged to attend suchschools.

It shows a purposeful Aregbesola in actionin the state.

I was impressed at the record of themanifestation of the policy he had stuck to inthe last three years.

Hon Posi OmisakinChairman, ICLG Education BoardIt is a giant stride that has never happened

in the history of the nation; that a publicschool could be this massive and well-stocked.

It requires a visionary, masses-oriented andpurposeful governor of a state in Nigeria toachieve this feat.

It is marvelous to us, irrespective of ourpolitical leanings.

This will, in no doubt, add value to thelearning culture and development of educationat the grassroots.

Hon Taiwo OlaiyaExecutive Secretary ICLGI feel on top of the world. I feel as if my

age could be thirty years aback and I should goback to school to enjoy this kind oforientation.

When Nigeria is at the forefront ofeducational crisis in Africa and a governor canexecute this kind of project, I feel on top ofthe world.

I made bold to say that this structure is thebest in the whole of the State of Osun today.

I therefore, charge parents and wardowners to come and compare this school tothe privately-owned ones, where they pay somuch and get little, but avail themselves theopportunity that this present administrationof Ogbeni has offered all to send our futureleaders to befitting public schools.

Ogbeni has once again etched his name ingold, as nothing can surpass this in the historyof this state.

I pray that we will all encourage him tocontinue with our votes, come August electionin Osun.

Chief Oduola Fawole, Otun Tobalase ofIfe

It was beautifully done, no doubt aboutthis.

It shows good things can happen, but oneof such people that can make good things tohappen is our governor, Ogbeni RaufAregbesola, who is a typical good example tofollow.

The execution of the project was done tothe specific standard. This is because we havea professional and one who is committed toexcellence at the helm of affairs.

I thank him as a professional for a job welldone.

Mr Ajibesinro Olalekan, ModakekeIt has never happened in Ife Zone. This

shows the passion of a caring governor. His care is all-encompassing, as he cares for

the youths, aged, children, men and women. Imade bold to say all.

We’ve withdrawn our children from privateschools back to the public schools.

Therefore, we are urging our people at thegrassroots to enrol their children in publicschools and support the second term ambitionof Aregbesola.

Hon. Taju LawalExecutive Secretary IELGI am very happy for what is happening

today in Ifeland. We’ve not seen publicschools like this in our life time. You can seethat Oba Okunade Sijuwade was there with allthe traditional rulers in Ifeland and in the stateas a whole.

We, Ife indigenes, appreciate what Ogbenihas done for us. The people in Ife-East LocalGovernment Council Area are here in a largenumber to show our support for the governorthat is doing this for us.

Chief Mrs Sariyu ObawoleOtun Iyalode of IfeThis is not a political statement; I want to

thank Ogbeni Aregbesola for doing these for usas mothers and children.

The task of educating our children takes tollmuch on mothers.

Sometimes, our children refuse to go toschool because of the poor learningenvironment. Some children refuse because oflack of food, while others do not have schooluniforms, because of their poor background. All these have become history in the State ofOsun.

The vision and passion of Aregbesola havechanged the story. Thank you Ogbeni, we,mothers, appreciate your effort, more powerto your elbow.

Sekinat AdewolePepper Seller,Oja TitunI ‘ve never physically seen Ogbeni before

in my life. I only saw him before ontelevision, but today, I saw him when hisconvoy passed through the market road. Hewaved at us and that has changed myperception of him. He wore primary schooluniform to identify with the children of thecommon man like me.

By his singular act, he has won my heart.I will vote for him so that he will continue

to provide good things for common man in ourstate.

THE State of Osun Ministry ofHealth under thecommissioner, Dr. (Mrs)

Temitope Ilori, last year emphaticallycampaigned on cancer, the dreadeddisease ever present of all time.According to her, the mortality andmobility can be put under control witha lot of sensitization and creatingawareness. It was recalled, that theministry collaborated with the first ladyof the State of Osun, Mrs. SerifatAregbesola, to curb the menace of thisdreaded disease by educating womenon the need to go for preliminarycheck up on their breast periodicallyand subsequently go for adequateoverall diagnosis at the cancer centernearest to them. She noted that, provision of cancer screening centre ispart of the vision of the presentadministration. She further stressedthat the present administration directedand guided by Ogbeni RaufAregbesola, is poised to deliver healthcare services to the people of the stateof Osun.

Here are some of the cancerscreening tests recommended.

a . Breast Cancerb. Testicular Cancerc. Colorectal Cancerd. Lung Cancere. Cervical Cancerf. Endometrial Cancerg. Urinary Tract and Bladder

Cancerh. Oral Canceri. Throat Cancerj. Prostate Cancerk. Skin CancersCancer has robbed a lot of souls to

their untimely death, leaving behindmillions of loved ones, who mourn inpains, anguish and traumatized for theloss of their fellows to this disease. Allover the world, scientists, scholars, professors, government agencies andsome notable agencies are craving forthe lasting solution for humanity tobreak free from this terminal disease. This release is cancer update fromJOHNS HOPKINS HOSPITALS,US.

After years of telling peoplechemotherapy is the only way to try(try being the key word) to eliminatecancer, Johns Hopkins is finallystarting to tell you there is analternative way.

•Every person has cancer cell in thebody. This cancer cells do not show upin the standard tests until they havemultiplied to a few billions. Whendoctors tell cancer patients that thereare no more cancer cells in theirbodies after treatment; it just meansthe tests are unable to detect thecancers cells because they have notreached the detectable size.

•Cancer cells occur between 6 tomore than 10 times in a person’s lifetime.

•When the person’s immune systemis strong, the cancer cells will bedestroyed and prevented frommultiplying and forming tumors.

•When a person has cancer, itindicates the person has multiplenutritional deficiencies. These could bedue to genetic, environmental, foodand life style factors.

•To overcome the multiplenutritional deficiencies, changing dietand including supplements willstrengthen the immune system.

•Chemotherapy involves poisoningthe rapidly-growing cancer cells in thebone marrow, gastrointestinal tract etc,and can cause organ damage, likeliver, kidneys, hearts, lungs etc.

•Radiation, while destroying cancercells, also burns, scars and damageshealthy cells, tissues and organs.

•Initial treatment with chemotherapyand radiation will often reduce tumoursize. However, prolonged use ofchemotherapy and radiation does notresult in more tumour destruction.

•When the body has too much toxicburden from chemotherapy andradiation, the immune system is eithercompromised or destroyed, hence theperson can succumb to various kindsof infections and complications.

•Chemotherapy and radiation cancause cancer cells to mutate andbecome resistant and difficult todestroy. Surgery can also causecancer cells to spread to other sites.

•An effective way to battle canceris to starve the cancer cells by notfeeding it with the foods it needs tomultiply.

CANCER CELLS FEED ON:•Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By

cutting off sugar, it cuts off oneimportant food supply to the cancercells. Sugar substitute likeNutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc. Aremade with Aspartame and it isharmful. A better natural substitutewould be Manuka honey or molassesbut only in very small amounts. Tablesalt has a chemical added to make it

white in colour. Better alternative isBragg’s aminos or sea salt.

•Milk causes the body to producemucus, especially in thegastrointestinal tract. Cancer feeds onmucus. By cutting off milk andsubstituting with unsweetened soymilk, cancer cells are being starved.

•Cancer cells thrive in an acidenvironment. A meat-based diet isacidic and it is best to eat fish, and alittle chicken, rather than beef or pork.Meat also contains livestockantibiotics, growth hormones andparasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.

•A diet made of 80% freshvegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help putthe body into an alkaline environment.About 20% can be from cooked foodincluding beans. Fresh vegetable juicesprovide live enzymes that are easilyabsorbed and reach down to cellularlevels within 15 minutes to nourish andenhance growth of healthy cells. Toobtain live enzymes for buildinghealthy cells try and drink freshvegetable juice (most vegetablesincluding bean sprouts) and eat someraw vegetables 2 or3 times a day.Enzymes are destroyed attemperatures of 104 degrees F (40degrees C)

•Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine. Green tea isa better alternative and has cancerfighting properties. Water-best to drinkpurified water or filtered to avoidknown toxins and heavy metals in tapwater distilled water is acidic, avoid it

•Meat protein is difficult to digest

and it requires a lot of digestiveenzymes. Undigested meat remainingin the intestines become putrefied andleads to more toxic build up.

•Cancer cell walls have a toughprotein covering. By refraining from oreating less meat, it frees moreenzymes to attack the protein walls ofcancer cells and allows the body’skiller cells to destroy the cancer cells.

•Some supplements build up theimmune system (IP6, Florssence,Essiac, anti-oxidant, vitamins, minerals,EFAs etc) to enable the body’s ownkiller cells to destroy cancer cells.Other supplements like vitamin E areknown to cause apoptosis orprogrammed cell death, the body’snormal method of disposing ofdamaged, unwanted or unneeded cells.

•Cancer is a disease of the mind, body and spirit. A proactive andpositive spirit will help the cancerwarrior be a survivor. Anger, unforgiveness and bitterness put thebody into a stressful and acidicenvironment. Learn to have a lovingand forgiving spirit. Learn to relax andenjoy life.

•Cancer cells cannot thrive in anoxygenated environment. Exercisingdaily, and deep breathing help to getmore oxygen down to the cellularlevel. Oxygen therapy is anothermeans employed to destroy cancercells.

Note the following:•No plastic containers in micro.•No water bottles in freezer.•No plastic wrap in microwave.•Dioxin chemicals causes cancer,

especially breast cancer. Dioxins arehighly poisonous to the cell of ourbodies. Do not freeze your plasticbottles with water in them as theserelease dioxins from the plastic.Recently, Dr. Edward Fujimoto,Wellness Programme Manager atCastle Hospital, explain further on thishealth hazard. He talked about howbad dioxins are to us. He condemnedheating of food in microwave usingplastic containers. This especiallyapplies to foods that contain fat.. Hesaid that the combination of fat, highheat, and plastics releases dioxins intothe food and ultimately into the cells ofthe body. Instead, he recommendsusing glass such as Corning Ware,Pyrex or ceramic containers forheating foods. You get the sameresults only without dioxin. Paper isnot bad, but you do not know what isin the paper. It is just safer to usetempered glass, corning ware, etc. Hereminded us that some of the fast foodrestaurants now moved from the foamcontainers to paper. He pointed outthat plastic wrap, such as saran is justas dangerous when placed over foodsto be cooked in the microwave. As thefood is nuked, the high heat causespoisonous toxins to actually melt out ofthe plastic wrap and drip into the food.Cover food with a paper towelinstead.

More frequently than ever before, cancer can be cured. The probabilityof a complete cure and extendedsurvival is continually improvingbecause of knowledge andunderstanding of the biology of cancer. As a result, new therapies thatselectively kill cancer cells are steadilybeing developed. These therapies arenot more effective but also safer. Themanagement of pain also has beengreatly improved over the years to thepoint that most pain of terminal illcancer patients can be decreased.

Centenary Celebrations And The Slaughter Of SoulsON 26th February 2014, one Mr.

Adegoroye wrote “only an insanegovernment will be celebrating

centenary while the youths, women, childrenand citizens are being killed daily in coldblood. Rather than mourn the dead, we wantto celebrate one hundred years of a failed stateruled by a failed and cursed generation. Thiscountry (Nigeria) needs more than justprayers if the government will be unable, forjust twenty four hours, to protect thecitizens. Who says we don’t have a warsituation in Nigeria? Oh! Families of thepained and the dead should celebrate too?Why not invite them all to Abuja to come anddance and entertain you? Shame has only onedefinition - shame!”.

These are deep and powerful words andthe rage, frustration and despair that fuelsthem reflects the thinking of many. Mr.Joseph Tobi Daniel drove home the pointwhen, on the same day, he used his twitterhandle to ask; “what kind of leader focuses ona centenary celebration when the souls ofslaughtered children are crying out forjustice?”

Millions of Nigerians would like an answerto that question and they were utterlyappauled as they watched our President gliblydelivering his centenary broadcast speech onnational television the night of 25th February2014, where he extolled the so-called virtuesof 100 years of our national existence. And ashe spoke, more innocent people were beingslaughtered. Yet, the concerns did not stopthere.

My friend and brother, Mr. AzubikeIshiekwene, who is undoubtedly one of themost formidable and compelling columnists inour country today, spoke the mind of virtuallyevery self-respecting and civilised Nigerianwhen, after watching the obscenity that wascalled the centenary ball on NTA on the nightof 27th February 2014, he wrote: ‘’I can’tbelieve that President Goodluck Jonathan andco, are having a centenary ball, literallydancing on the graves of over 50 innocentchildren murdered by Boko Haram. I can’tbelieve it. I’m bereft”. Azu got it absolutelyright. As a matter of fact , so shocked anddisgusted was yours truly that the centenaryball actually went ahead barely three daysafter the mass murder of those innocent soulsthat I couldn’t even bear to watch it ontelevision. We are in trouble in this countryand our nation clearly needs deliverance.

The war against terror is raging and weappear to be losing it. Hundreds of people arebeing killed on a regular basis and it appearsthat no-one really ‘’gives a damn’’. Thebowels of our compassion have run dry andwe no longer shudder or shed a tears when wehear that hundreds of our citizens have beenbutchered in one go by Boko Haram. We arejust not interested anymore and as long as itdoes not affect any member of our immediatefamily, the best we can do is to shake ourheads and whisper ‘’what a pity’’. We feel noempathy with the victims and neither is thereany sense of outrage. We simply feel numb fora few seconds and after that we couldn’t careless.

Yet, the truth is that the minute we becomeso dehumanised and so insensitive that westop caring about those that are beingslaughtered, then we may as well give up hopeand conclude that life is no longer worthliving. The minute we begin to regard thosethat are being butchered on a daily basis asnothing but distant numbers, we may as wellstop regarding ourselves as human beings andinstead we ought to describe ourselves as acolony of beasts or a nation of vampires.

The minute we stop caring about what isgoing on in the North and we no longer feelthat it is necessary to honour the dead or toprotect the living, we are no longer worthy oflife. It is for this reason that I believe it isnecessary to once again remind mycompatriots about what is happening in someparts of Northern Nigeria today and to remindthem again about the sheer havoc that BokoHaram is unleashing on our people. They areindeed an affliction for which there appears tobe no cure. Please consider the following:

On 1st March 2014, in the heart ofMaiduguri, the capital of Borno State, BokoHaram suicide bombers detonated twomassive bombs, slaughtering at least 53innocent Nigerians, including women andchildren.

On 26th February 2014 in Madagali andMichika Local Government Council Areas ofAdamawa State, three communities wereattacked and 37 innocent Nigerians wereslaughtered by Boko Haram. They alsoattacked some banks and police stations andburnt them to the ground. There areeyewitness reports that allege that on sightingthe large number of well-armed insurgents intheir Hillux vans, our soldiers fled the sceneand ran into the safety of the bush to hide.

On the night of the 24th February, 2014 at

Federal Government College, Buni in Yadi,Yobe State, 59 innocent school children wereslaughtered by Boko Haram in the middle ofthe night in their dormitories, as they slept.

On 23rd February, 2014 in Malari and Izgevillages, Borno State, 12 innocent Nigerianswere slaughtered by Boko Haram and bothvillages were levelled. On 19th February,2014, in the town of Bama, Borno State, 91innocent Nigerians were slaughtered by BokoHaram. Again on 19th February, 2014, BokoHaram attacked the Buratai, Borno Statecountry home of the Commander of the JointTask Force in the Niger Delta Area, MajorGeneral Tukur Buratai, and they killed onesoldier.

On 17th February, 2014, in Galga village,Gombi Local Government Council Area,Adamawa State, 11 innocent Nigerians wereslaughtered by Boko Haram. On 16thFebruary, 2014, again in Izge Village, BornoState, 90 innocent Nigerians were slaughteredby Boko Haram. On 15th February, 2014, inBaga Village, Borno State 10 innocentNigerians were slaughtered by Boko Haram. On 12th February 2014 in Borno State, 60innocent Nigerians were slaughtered by BokoHaram and 24 young girls were abducted andcarted off without any trace.

On January 27th, 2014 ,in Adamawa andBorno States respectively, 70 innocentNigerians were slaughtered by Boko Haram ina series of attacks. On January 14th, 2014, inthe heart of Maiduguri, the capital of BornoState, no less than 50 innocent Nigerians wereslaughtered by Boko Haram in a suicide bombattack. Not too long before then, Boko Haramattacked an army barracks in Borno State, killed 200 soldiers, carted off the wives andchildren of our military personnel and burntthe barracks to the ground. The soldiers werelater buried in mass graves.

A few weeks prior to that, numerousschools were attacked and hundreds of ourchildren were either shot to death, hacked topieces or had their throats cut and blooddrained. Consequently, many schools havebeen closed down in Borno and Yobe statesrespectively. A few weeks back, no less than160 of our soldiers were killed by BokoHaram in one skirmish, simply because theyran out of bullets.

In June 2013 at Government CollegeSecondry School, Damatru, Yobe State, eightyoung students and one teacher wereslaughtered by Boko Haram. On July 6th,2013, at the Government Secondry School,Mamudo, Yobe State, 41 young students andone teacher were slaughtered by Boko Haram. On September 29th, 2013, at the College OfAgriculture, Gubja, Yobe State, 44 studentsand a number of teachers were slaughtered byBoko Haram. On the night of April 19th, 2013till the early hours of April 20th at Baga townin Borno State, 228 people, including women

and children, were slaughtered by BokoHaram. On March 8th, 2010, in DogoNahawa, Plateau State, 500 villagers, includingwomen and children, were slaughtered byaffiliates and associates of Boko Haram. Therewere many other attacks on churches, markets, motor parks and schools in variousparts of the north including Kano State, NigerState, Abuja, Kogi State and others between2009 and 2014. In each of these attacks, manywomen and children were killed. The situationseems to have degenarated even further todaywith vast areas of the Nigerian state in thenorth-east literally being overwhelmed by theterrorists and insurgents, even though there isa state of emergency in place there. Worststill, it has been generally acknowledged thatthe Boko Haram fighters are better equippedand better supplied than our soldiers. Thebeleagured governor of Borno State himself,my friend and brother, Alhaji KashimShettima, sent out an S.O.S to Nigerians lastweek, when he told journalists at thePresidential Villa in Abuja that “Nigeria is atwar.” The Boko Haram insurgents are betterequipped than the Nigerian military. We needmore equipment and more troops’’.

President Goodluck Jonathan responded tothe governor’s concerns during his PresidentialMedia chat on 24th Feb. 2014 by saying thefollowing- “Boko Haram is not easy to fight. If the governor of Borno feels the military arethat useless against Boko Haram, I can pullout the military for one month and see whathappens there and after I can send the militaryback to take charge. The governor should besensitive in his choice of words. It’sunfortunate”.

Clearly we are in trouble. The governor ofBorno State is asking for more help and moretroops from the Federal Government becausehundreds more of his people are being killedand abducted EVERY DAY by Boko Haramand this is the best response that ourPresident can give to him? Are those beingslaughtered and abducted not Nigerians?Would this have been his response if thosebeing killed on a daily basis were his own Ijawpeople?

Finally, no less than 130 churches wereburnt down in Borno State in 2013 alone andthe Catholic Church alone lost 53 churches outof that figure. This genocidal pattern ofbehaviour and cycle of butchery by BokoHaram is systemic and has been recurrent andregular for the last three years. All in all,Nigeria has lost almost 8000 innocent civiliansto Boko Haram in the last three years and thatincludes women and children. It does nothowever include the vast number of womenthat have been captured and kidnapped bythem and that are now being used as sex-slaves. President George W. Bush once said

“I believe the most solemn duty of theAmerican president is to protect the Americanpeople.” President Goodluck Jonathan hasmuch to learn from this. . The truth is that we

as a people have lost all sense of compassionand decency when it comes to such mattersand our feelings and consciences have becomeseared. To the majority of Nigerians, thoseprecious souls and compatriots that have beenkilled by Boko Haram over the last three yearsare just a number- they are nothing but distantnames, from a distant place, belonging todistant figures. There is simply no sense ofnational outrage from our people about thisinsidious rebellion and about these brutalkillings and vicious attacks and neither is theirany sense of urgency on the part of ourgovernment to bring them to an end.

Given the way we conduct ourselves, onewould not have thought that Nigeria iscurrently enmeshed in the most brutal waragainst terror in its entire history. Yet, as wego on with our day to day business and act asif all is well, thousands are being killed in theNorth-Eastern part of our country by BokoHaram. There can be no greater evidence ofman’s inhumanity to man when one considersour attitude. Such inhumanity andinsensitivity to the plight of others has takenfirm root in the Nigeria of today.

What a monuemental tragedy this is. Whendid we, as a people, degenerate to thisabysmal level of lack of empathy and whendid we stop becoming our brother’s keeper? As millions of Nigerians ‘’celebrate’’ our onehundred years of national unity, I hope thatthey find it in their hearts to spare a thoughtand say a little prayer for those whose lovedones are not with them today simply becausethey have been murdered or kidnapped byBoko Haram. May God heal their woundsand have mercy on them even as we grievewith them. And may God forgive ourPresident and the majority of the Nigerianpeople for simply ‘’not giving a damn’’ abouttheir sad and unfortunate plight.

There is no question in my mind thatNigeria is presently being governed by vile andevil men. These are cowardly men that arebeing guided by satan, that have no fear ofGod and that are more interested inpersecuting the innocent and attempting tointimidate the opposition than in providinggood and accountable government, protectingthe lives of our citizens or fighting the waragainst terror. We have become a nation ofvampires that is being run by a vampirePresident, who feels no pain andwho harbours no remorse when the blood ofchildren is shed and when the lives of theinnocent are cut short.

Permit me to end this contribution withtwo parting shots. The first is from thegovernment of the United States of Americawho have said that ‘’

Boko Haram is the secondmost dangerous terroristorganisation globally’’. The report says ”apartfrom the Taliban in Afghanistan, Boko Haramin Nigeria recorded the highest number ofterror attacks last year, whilst Boko Haramkilled the second highest number ofpeople’’. The statistical report called‘START’ which was conducted by theUniversity of Maryland for the Americangovernment on global terrorism in 2012revealed that ’’while the Taliban killed 1,842people in 525 terror attacks last year, andcame tops on the infamous ranking, BokoHaram came second, killing 1,132 in 364 terrorattacks. Both the Taliban and Boko Haramhave killed more than Al-Qaeda in Iraq, theMaoists in India, Al-Shabaab, Al-Qaeda in theArabian Peninsula, rolled into one.”- UnitedStates Government, June 11, 2013. This isindeed food for thought. The second partingshot is a chilling and insightful contributionfrom Governor Murtala Nyako of AdamawaState, who is a man that has proved to be farmore discerning and forthright than most whenit comes to this matter. Barely 24 hours after37 innocent people were butchered by theterrorists in his state, he asked the followingpertinent questions. ‘’In Buni-Yadi, YobeState, the soldiers withdrew from checkpointshours to the attack. Who ordered thewithdrawal? In Shuwa and Michika, soldierswithdrew and shortly after that, Boko Haramattacked. Who ordered the withdrawals? Wealso have the case of General MohammedShuwa (who was killed) in Maiduguri by theso-called Boko Haram. There is an army unitthere but they didn’t respond during theattack. Who told them not to respond? TheAirforce Base was raided in Maiduguri. Therewas a military base nearby. Who gave the basethe order not to respond during the raid on theairforce base? Either, this thing is controlledby unknown fellows or an unknown BokoHaram strategic commander, who is in thedefence system or are things being stagedmanaged?’’ Needless to say these questionsneed to be answered. May God help us all.

The attention of theGovernment of theState of Osun has beendrawn to the discoveryof an object suspectedto be explosive deviceat the banking hall ofone of the branches of abank in Osogbo, thestate capital.

Reports available yet indicatethat the object was foundconcealed in a polythene baginside the banking hall.

This led to the invitation of theAnti-bomb squad of the OsunCommand of the NigeriaPolice whose men evacuatedthe dangerous object from thebanking hall.

While reminding the people ofOsun and Nigerians in generalof the various pro-activemeasures taken by governmentof the State of the Virtuous onsecurity of lives and propertygenerally, we are compelled tocall on the security agencies toget to the root of this strangediscovery in Osogbo and tellthe whole world how thisdevice found its way into abanking hall.

Considering the usuallyimpregnable fortification ofbanks through their variousscreening machines whichdetect metals and otherobjects of lesser dangers, it isunthinkable how the devicescaled through this fortress ofthe bank before it got into thebanking hall where it wasdiscovered. To be specific, we suspect adeliberate foul play in theantics of those who desire tocreate a sense of insecurity inthis state through their variousmachinations andmanipulations. We arehowever assured of thereadiness of the securityagencies to conduct athorough investigation on thedevelopment in
