Welcome Mrs. Beth Lapore! Hello STS Parents and Students! I am a graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes in Shamokin, Pa and Elizabethtown College. While at Elizabethtown I studied Early Childhood and Elementary Education and received my B.S. After graduating, I moved to New Cumberland and quickly became a member of the parish, my husband and I were married here. Before joining the STS team, I taught at Central Dauphin School District for 10 years. For the last 3 years my daughter Sophie has attended school here and is in 3rd grade here this year. My son Vincent started attending school here 2 years ago in the Preschool, and is in Kindergarten here as well. I am so excited to be back in Kindergarten especially here at Saint Theresa.
Current enrollment at St. Theresa School is 398!! That is terrific. We are thrilled to
have 3 full Kindergarten classes this year. We welcome all our new friends joining us this school year!
Thank you to everyone who came out to Hoss’s for the Back to School event. That event raised $808.02. The money goes back to the teachers. It will be
used for teacher reimbursements for the annual Education Conference and also staff luncheon on in-service days. Thank you for your support!
Middle School students are enjoying brand new desks! We a l s o h a v e brand new tables in our cafeteria.
All middle school students (6-8th) will be receiving Chromebooks for daily use in the classrooms. With the additional technology for middle school, it allows more availability of our mobile lap top stations and our mobile ipad stations for the lower grades. St. Theresa School is becoming a Google classroom and teachers are being trained on how to use these tools effectively with the students. The Chromebooks have been made possible with the generosity of an anonymous donor and funds from the Race for Education. Thank you for your support!
Dawn Marie Nguyen,
L.P.N., is a lifelong
resident of Carlisle, PA.
She earned her degree
from Franklin County
Practical Nursing
Program in 1993 and has mostly recently spent
the last 19 years working at
Claremont Nursing and
Rehabilitation Center. She and
her husband Vuong will be
married for 40 years this
September. They are faithful
members of St. Patrick Parish
in Carlisle, where her children also spent their
elementary years of education. In her spare
time, Dawn volunteers as the head sacristan at
the Marsh Drive Church, leading other
volunteers to help clean the church and prepare
it for liturgical holidays. She is an avid reader
and enjoys baking. Her favorite activities
include spending time with her husband, her
nearby sons and daughter-in-law, six (soon to
be seven!) grandchildren, and visiting Boston to
spend time with her daughter and son-in-law.
Hi my name is Patti
Martin and I am the new K
-5 Learning Support
Teacher. I have about 20
years of teaching experience
at public schools, which
includes both time as a
special education teacher and time as a reading
specialist. I’m very excited to now be a part of
the St. Theresa school staff. I earned my
Bachelor’s Degree in special education at with a
concentration in Learning Disabilities at
Shippensburg University, then my Master’s
Degree in Reading with a Reading Specialist
Certification from McDaniel College. Here at
St. Theresa School I will be teaching both
reading and math to students in small groups
that have a significant need and have gone
through the referral process.

Summer Vacation by Allen Clouser, 7th grade: This summer I went six thousand miles cross country with my grandparents. I saw many amazing things. First, we went to Ohio and met family I never even knew. I also visited the Indianapolis Speedway. We saw some of the track. On our way to New Mexico, we saw the hotel cones from the movie Cars. Also, in South Dakota we ate potato donuts that were as good as the ones at the Farm Show. We saw the Grand Canyon, but I liked Bryce Canyon better because I liked looking at the rock formations, called hoo doos. My fa-vorite stop on the trip was the Lamborghini dealership in Dallas. There was a lot of cool cars, such as the 2017 Lamborghini Hurican. We also saw the Olympic Village in Park City, Nevada. One of the most important places I visited was Salt Lake City because I learned about it last year in Mrs. McCarthy’s class. So if you get the chance, take a cross country trip, so you can see all the marvelous things that I did.
The Lenig family hosted Kenajah for the 5th summer in a row! Kenajah is a Fresh Air Child from the Bronx. The Fresh Air Program gives children from NYC the chance to have a week or 2 away from the city. Have you
ever thought of hosting a Fresh Air Child? Ask Mrs. Lenig about it!! What a great way to show your child generosity!
Congratulations to a number of our Saint
Theresa future "stars of the theater" who par-
ticipated in the summer musical theater camp.
The camp ran for three weeks in June and the
students performed the musical, Seussical Kids
on Friday, June 30th at Trinity High School.
Throughout the camp, the students learned
about singing, dancing and basic skills needed
for acting. The camp included students from
3rd through 6th grade and as you can see, a
good time was had by performers and audience
alike!
Hats off to our amazing summer workers!! They
worked so hard to make our school look AMAZ-
ING this school year! Tons of moving furniture
and cleaning, cleaning and more cleaning!
Thank you so
much. The
school looks
amazing.

We were thrilled to have the Matsiko World
Orphan Choir join us for the start of school
again this year! The students and staff of STS were
treated to a performance by the children during the
first week of school. We are also proud to announce
that we have again adopted a child for the school
year, Mathusalah from Liberia. If you would like to
participate in helping Mathusalah, you can send in a
donation with the monthly Missions collection.
Missions Collections are the 3rd Tuesday of every
month until May.
Congratulations to the
following students who
were inducted into

Connor Pushart, President of Student Council address to the parents at
Back to School Night: Hello, my name is Connor Pushart, I am an 8th grader, and I am this year’s Student Council Presi-
dent. I have been attending St. Theresa School since I started in Kindergarten. I have had so much fun
through the years and met so many friends. I have loved all the years I have been here, and I wouldn’t want
to go to any other school. One reason why is the strong faith here at St. Theresa’s. We go to mass almost
every week, and the lower grades get church buddies, who are in the middle school grades. There are
prayers every morning and afternoon. Plus, religion is always great and helps us learn something new every
day about God, Jesus and the Saints, or a major day in religious history. Some days classes will even go out
to the chapel. Learning about our faith is always so interesting.
STS has many other great traits. The technology here makes learning more fun and enjoyable. We
have computers and iPads and Smart Boards, and starting this year, the middle school will be getting
Google Chrome Books. St. Theresa’s also has lots of specific weeks dedicated towards a cause, such as
Spirit Week, and Red Ribbon week, which raises awareness on illegal drugs and tobacco, and why no one
should use them. My favorite is Catholic Schools week. It’s a fun filled week with a huge volleyball tour-
nament at the end.
STS has so many great things to do, and it will only continue to get better. Thank you for your time
and I hope you enjoy your night.

PENNSYLVANIA YOUNG READER’S CHOICE AWARD
READING PROGRAM 2017/18
STS is participating for the second year in a row in the Pennsylvania Young Reader’s
Choice Award (PYRCA) reading program, sponsored by the Pennsylvania School
Librarian’s Association. This program is designed to promote reading of quality books
by the students in Pennsylvania, to encourage teacher/librarian collaboration in young
adult and children’s literature and to honor authors whose works has been recognized by
the students of Pennsylvania.
This program began this summer and will run through early March. Students must read or have
been read to at least three books from the list provided to vote for their favorite book in March. See the
school website under Student Services/Library for the complete list of books. The winners will be
announced at the annual Pennsylvania School Library Association Conference on March 31, 2018. Please
encourage your child to participate.
Mrs. Beauduy and
Mrs. Zimmerman
met with a few of
the students from
book club on
Monday, June 26th at Sweet Frog. We read, The
City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau after the school
year ended and then gathered to talk about what a
great book it was! We are hoping to continue
reading the other books in the series. Luke Britten
was on vacation but was able to join our group
through Face time.

Just in case you have asked your student what
they have been doing in school … and you hear
the answer “nothin” ….
here is an extremely
BRIEF and very quick
overview of ALL that has
been happening at St
Theresa School!!
Preschool 4's are learning all about
apples, Johnny Appleseed and have
already started printing!
Here is a cute picture of all 3
Kindergarten classes learning how to be reverent and
respectful at church before we went as an entire school. Fr.
Dubois happened to see us walking over and spent some
time with us!
Students in first grade are learning about the Five Senses
in Lab Learner. A speaker from Vision Resources will
present an eye safety program to the first grade students in
conjunction with this unit.
Second grade is very excited to begin a yearlong
preparation for receiving the Sacraments of First Penance
and First Holy Communion. We have been working on our
first unit in our new Language Arts series on friendship
which asks the question how do friends depend on one
another?
Third grade is learning about communities in social
studies and getting ready to send Flat Stanley out to
relatives around the world.
Fourth graders in both classes are adjusting well to the
transition from a primary grade level to an intermediate one
as the shift in responsibility now lays on them. Students
are being encouraged to use technology to study for tests
and quizzes (Quizlet). On September 11th, 4A and 4B
joined together to talk about the history of that day. The
emphasis of the lesson was on the heroes God blesses us
with in our lives
Fifth grade is learning about early humans and
archaeology. To give the students a better understanding
about how archaeologists had to have patience, they each
received a chocolate chip cookie and toothpick. They had
to "excavate" each chocolate chip without crumbling the
cookie. We had our first Kindergarten buddy visit last
week.
Spanish (Señora Haver): Grades K, 1 and 2 are learning
greeting songs and numbers. Grades 3, 4 and 5 are focusing
on learning courtesy expressions, greetings and numbers
and related expressions. MS students are learning and
reviewing courtesy expressions, greetings and numbers.
are also conversing in Spanish using daily questions.
Middle School:
STS will hold a "See You at the Pole" prayer service on Wednesday Sep 27 at 7:30 around our flag pole. For over 25 years SYATP has been about one simple act: Prayer. It remains about students uniting themselves in prayer before God, interceding for their generation. Student Council will lead the prayer service. All are welcome. Come as you are. Physical Education (Mrs. Mariani): In grades 2 to 5, PE classes have started "camp fire" discussions. In groups, students gather around their "camp fire" (it is a colored cone) and brainstorm various health topics. If you visit the gym, take time to look at their work on the gym walls. In middle school, we will be discussing "what does it mean to be healthy?" Some students broke from the norm and gave excellent responses such as self-confidence, faith, and helping others. It is extremely important that students know it takes more than healthy food and exercise to be healthy. PE classes are still super active, these health discussions give students a chance to catch their breath, regroup, collaborate, and reflect upon their own health. Science:
Five students were selected to submit their science fair to the Broadcom MASTERS Competition due to their high score at CASEF. Melonie Uroda - (8th grade last year) was selected as one of the 300 Semi-Finalists out of about 2500 entries!!! That is amazing! Middle school is quite busy in the science lab. Sixth and 7th grade are learning about chemistry. Eight grade is learning how to make their own thermometers. Language Arts (Mrs. Szymczak) Religion 7 is learning
about the New Testament and just finished researching
and presenting keynote presentations on Sacred writings
of other major religions and comparing them to the Bible.
For their first group assignment, the students did
exceptionally well and worked really well together.
HLA 7 read The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and are
going to be writing an argumentative essay in
conjunction with the text. Our
discussions have been terrific!
HLA 8 is continuing to read To Kill a
Mockingbird as a class and our
discussions have been very lively.
The students are really analyzing the
text at a level beyond what I have
taught before. I'm very impressed
with their level of analysis!

Feast of Saint Theresa
Every year, Saint
Theresa School
celebrates the Feast
of Saint Theresa in a
very special way. We
start by reciting a 9-
day Novena which we
began on Monday,
September 18th.
Then on night before
we celebrate at school, helpers decorate the
school with flowers! Thank you all our volunteers,
Noha Bross and Mrs. Tanya Haller for organizing
the event. We also celebrate with enjoying cake
at lunch time, thank you PTO! As an extra special
treat this year, Mrs. Annamarie Witt is donating
her mother’s Saint Theresa statute to the
school. Chip Zimmerman took a great deal of
time restore the statue back to her original
beauty. Thank you Mrs. Witt for thinking of us
and thank you Mr. Zimmerman for donating your
time and talents!
9 day Novena daily themes: I love your people, Lord. Help me to love them more! I reflect you to the world, Lord. Help me to reflect you more clearly! I rely on you, Lord. Help me to rely on you more! I accept your will, Lord. Help me to accept your will every day! I try to forgive, Lord. Help me to forgive 70 times 7 times! I am humble, Lord. Give me more humility! I see you, Lord. Help me to see you more! I trust you, Lord. Help me to trust you more! I love you, Lord. Help me to love you more!
MISSIONS Collections
will be every 3rd Tuesday
of the month:
OCTOBER 18
NOVEMBER 15
DECEMBER 20
Thank you Mrs. Castner
for leading this cause.
For over 25 years, See You at the Pole has been
about one simple act—prayer. SYATP is still about
students uniting themselves in prayer before God
interceding for their generation.
SEE YOU AT THE POLE day is on Wednesday,
September 27, at 7:30 a.m. All around the globe, in
every time zone, students will be gathering at their
flagpoles, praying for their school, friends, families,
churches, and communities. SEE YOU AT THE
POLE is a day committed to global unity in Christ
and prayer for your generation.
ALL are invited! Come as you are! Saint Theresa
School will see you at our flag pole, just in front of
the chapel 7:30 a.m. September 27th. Thank you
Mrs. McCarthy for organizing the event.
We will be celebrating Red
Ribbon Week the week of
October 10th at St. Theresa
School. Take the National Red
Ribbon Campaign Pledge and
be a part of the creation of a
drug free America. Talk to
your children about the
dangers of drug abuse. Set
clear rules about not using
drugs. Set a good example for
our children by not using
illegal drugs or medicine without a prescription. Monitor
your children's behavior and enforce appropriate
consequences, so that our rules are respected. Encourage
family and friends to follow the same guidelines to keep
children safe from substance abuse.

Last year Alexander Zemaitis (STS ‘13) started a candle company with
his dad. Their first show was in October 2016 and since then, they have
sold hundreds of candles at shows and are in 6 retail outlets! Alexander had
been testing ideas, scents and designs for months before coming up with a
product that has been very successful for them. Check out their website
at: Moonrise Candle Co. Alexander just started his freshman year at NYU
and is loving it. He is still helping out
with the candle company and is hoping
to expand into the NYC Market.
As the summer comes to a close,
Becca Zemaitis (STS ’14) is finishing her Girl Scout Gold Award. Becca chose to
create a garden with the Shalom House in Harrisburg. In addition to creating the
garden and teaching the women about good nutrition, she also taught them about
composting and how to cook with the fresh vegetables. Although the project started
to help the Shalom House, the entire community has rallied around the garden and
it has been a huge success. Thanks to generous donations from the St. Theresa Par-
ish, the garden has had a complete renovation and has really helped to bring the
community together which was more than Becca had ever anticipated.
This past summer, Andrea Repetz (STS ‘14), was installed as President of the
Pennsylvania State 4-H Council. After a rigorous application process, eight teens
from across the state were chosen to be officers of the 2017-2018 team. Andrea was
then selected by a panel of advisers to serve as President. 4-H is a non-profit youth
organization whose mission is to help youth ages 5-19 to reach their fullest poten-
tial. With a focus on learning-by-doing, 4-H strives to teach leadership, citizenship,
responsibility, and life skills to youth all over the world by allowing members to
participate in a variety of clubs
and project areas. The State
Council is an elite team of teens
selected to be the official spokes-
people of Pennsylvania 4-H. The
team will spend the next year rep-
resenting the PA 4-H program at
local, regional, state, and national events, as well as meeting with government offi-
cials and organizing 3 state-wide conferences for 4-H members. You can see Andrea and the rest of the State Council at
upcoming events such as Penn State Football games and the Pennsylvania Farm Show.
Mrs. Deb Richard’s son,

STS. He left St. Theresa
School in 2004 and gradu-
ated from Cedar Cliff 2009.
Now he works at the Garlic
Poet and eats everything!
