Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary

December 8 On Tuesday we celebrate Mary’s immaculate conception. Chosen by God to bear the Son of God, free from the stain of original sin from the moment of her own conception, Mary was uniquely qualified to carry Jesus in her womb. Because of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, we are all able to carry Jesus in our hearts. Let Mary’s obedience in-spire us to give God our assent to bring Christ to the world.

Genesis 3:9–15: I will put enmity between your offspring and hers.Psalm 98: “Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous deeds.”Ephesians 1:3–6, 11–12: He chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world.Luke 1:26–38: Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. The whole story of Jesus’ sacrifice and our redemption was set in motion by Eve, “the mother of all the living,” whose disobedience was humanity’s first rejection of God’s grace. Mary, the Blessed Mother, our Mother, enables God’s Son to be born into our world by her obedience, her accep-tance of God’s grace. Saint Paul tells us that we too were chosen long before we were born to live in God’s grace. Let us reflect on our response to God’s grace as we listen to God’s word.

Fr. Dave Zimmer

Twice today we hear Isaiah’s di-rective: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.” How are we preparing for the Lord to make inroads into our lives, into our hearts? What ob-stacles has our self-centeredness placed in the way and how can we remove them? For what do we need forgiveness and what repentance can we make? As we prepare to receive the Lord today in the Eucharist, let us also prepare to truly receive him in our hearts.

The Pastor’s PointsIntroducing…Our 2020 Christmas ProjectSocks for the Homeless … In memory of Fr. Mychal Judge, OFM Our parish Christmas project for this year is called “Socks for the homeless.” From now until Christmas we will be collecting new socks to be given to homeless people who need them to keep their feet warm and dry this winter. Socks for men, women and children of all ages will be gratefully accepted. Through a charity called, “Mychal’s Message” I became aware of a ministry worth our attention and partici-pation. It certainly has mine. “Mychal’s Message” is now a part of my story and I would like to introduce it to each of you to become a part of your Christmas story this year and thereafter. The project was discovered early this year when my brother and I when we were fortunate enough to meet the grandparents of a young girl who, at the young age of elev-en years old, established a charity in memory of her friend, Fr. Mychal Judge. So, let us begin with Part One of this incredible story. Part One: Who is Fr. Mychal Judge, OFM? Father Mychal F. Judge, OFM was a busy Franciscan priest who dedicated his life to serving God’s people. He is known for his work with the homeless, recovering addicts, AIDS patients, and his work as chaplain to the New York City Fire Department. Fr. Mychal was always responding to the needs he noticed. “He said yes” many times in his life. “He said yes” to help others who were in trouble or less fortunate. When TWA Flight 800 exploded shortly after takeoff from New York in July 1996 and fell into the Atlantic off Long Island, Father Mychal helped counsel the families and friends of the victims every day for three weeks and worked to arrange a permanent memorial at the site. He had since returned every summer to offer a memorial service and comfort the families. Over the years, Father Mychal won the hearts of the firefighters and their families by his char-ismatic Irish personality and warm Franciscan outreach to them in all their needs – baptisms, weddings, funerals, hos-pital visits – wherever and whenever he was sought. On September 11, 2001, Father Mychal rushed from the friary at Saint Francis of Assisi Church to the scene of the World Trade Center attacks. After administering last rites to a firefighter, Father Mychal was hit by debris and killed. He became the first officially recorded fatality following the at-tack. More than 2,800 people attended the Mass of Christian Burial for Father Mychal on Saturday, September 15, at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Manhattan. During his life, Father Mychal spent much of his time ministering to the homeless on the Breadline at St. Francis of Assisi Church in New York City. This is one of the many places where he found God - in the hurting, the broken, the suffering, and the poor. His dedication to homeless men, women and children has become a calling to us that mani-fests itself as Mychal’s Message.

Memorare Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. In-spired with this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrow-ful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.OUR FINANCIAL OFFERING TO GOD - Fiscal Year 2020-21 - Week 22
