Close collaboration is not only the key to Lipman Karas’ ability to deliver outstanding services, but also the reason we enjoy a strong firm ethos and culture. Teamwork is an absolute priority and strong working relationships are a feature of our projects.

LK’s social calendar includes regular Friday night drinks, Adelaide Fringe and Festival events, mid-year and end of year celebrations, sporting teams and a book club.

We promote a balanced lifestyle for all team members and support flexible working arrangements to assist them in achieving both career and life goals, whether family, sporting, musical or other extra-curricular pursuits.

LK is committed to promoting equal opportunity for all and we have been recognised internationally over many years for our innovation, promotion and accommodation of flexible working arrangements. In particular in the Euromoney Women in Business Law Awards, LK has received awards for Best Adelaide Firm, Best Firm for Talent Management in Australia and in Asia, Best Gender Diversity Initiative by an International Firm and Best International Firm for Work Life Balance.

I had a less traditional start to my legal career. I studied a degree in International Studies straight out of high school, spent a number of years in federal government roles followed by a stint in hospitality, and was married and had two children before I finally decided to undertake that law degree I had thought about doing for many years.

In February 2015 I commenced a clerkship at Lipman Karas having no idea that I would still be at the firm some five years later as a Senior Associate.

Working at Lipman Karas

When I started at Lipman Karas I had not really grasped the truly international nature of the work undertaken by the firm and the significance of some of the projects the firm is involved in (some of which I had only just learnt about at university).

For the majority of my time at Lipman Karas I have been involved in a large and complex international matter relating to a significant commercial fraud. The proceedings stemming from this fraud include multiple actions relating to areas such as company law, audit and professional negligence, international law and director liability.

This matter has provided me with experience in dealing with a range of different types of proceedings (including appeals). I have also had the opportunity to travel on a number of occasions for this matter and to meet with my overseas colleagues and counsel. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work on large-scale international litigation and obtain experience in jurisdictions such as Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and the Cayman Islands, all while being based in Adelaide. Another benefit of being involved in such significant litigation is

Our Culture Insight from an LK Senior Associate – Brooke HowardOur Firm in the Community

Contributing to our wider communities is an integral part of Lipman Karas’ culture. We actively engage in the work of the many causes we support, including access to justice initiatives, the contemporary arts, programs for some of the most vulnerable members of our community and educational and cultural programs involving indigenous communities.

LK supports a number of activities and organisations focused on ensuring access to justice by all members of the community, including the South Australian Magistrates Court Legal Advice Service, JusticeNet and the Refugee Advocacy Service of South Australia.

LK is committed to creating opportunities for indigenous youth, including supporting Yalari, an organisation that coordinates secondary education scholarships at Australia’s leading boarding schools, as well as the Aboriginal Law Studies Program through the Law Society of South Australia, The Aboriginal Law Student Mentoring Program, The Orana Foundation, the Nature Foundation of South Australia, Kids on Country Program and the Indigenous Art Council.

the opportunity to work with some of the best litigators, barristers and experts from around the globe.

As well as working on large international matters, I have had the opportunity to work on more local matters. To a certain extent, there is scope at Lipman Karas to work on a range of matters of varying scale, in a number of jurisdictions in both Australia and overseas. Lipman Karas also offers a number of opportunities for practitioners to be involved in meaningful pro bono work, which is very important to the firm.

Opportunities

Working as a lawyer is very different to studying law and the clerkship program at Lipman Karas really helps to bridge that gap by providing invaluable training, in particular in effective research methodology and writing. Research undertaken at Lipman Karas is incredibly thorough and can often involve unique points of law in various jurisdictions. Following twisted pathways of the development of various sections of legislation from their roots in the United Kingdom to their present application and interpretation in other jurisdictions is something that I have found really interesting. Clerks are also taught how to draft in a way that can ultimately feed into legal submissions or letters of advice – it is very rewarding for junior practitioners to see their work product really take on a practical application.

Throughout the year the firm offers a number of professional development opportunities including presentations by senior practitioners, former members of the Judiciary and industry experts, as well as offering well-being seminars on a range of topics.

LK is a major supporter of the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art, Ramsay Art Prize People’s Choice Award, Loreto SpringART and Sanaa: A Better World Through Creativity. The firm has a substantial collection of indigenous and contemporary Australian art that is showcased in each of our offices.

The firm also supports a variety of community programs including the Mary Magdalene Drop-In Centre, Musica Viva, Dress for Success, Operation Flinders, Ice Factor and Room to Read.

Firm Culture

The one thing that struck me from the moment I started at Lipman Karas was how approachable and supportive all of the other practitioners are. The firm culture is very collaborative and there is no purposeful hierarchical distinction between the practitioners of varying levels. Principals work alongside more junior practitioners on all types of matters. Our three offices also work quite closely together, and I have been able to develop strong working relationships with my colleagues overseas through the use of various technologies as well as occasional travel. To be able to work with colleagues from a diverse range of backgrounds with experience in a number of different jurisdictions has been invaluable to my professional development.

At Lipman Karas we work in cohesive groups based on the principles of teamwork, objectivity, creativity, integrity and unflinching determination.

Through years of specialisation, we have developed the LK method, instilled across our offices and projects. This approach to practice has enabled us to consistently deliver extraordinary results for our clients and help our lawyers develop into strong advocates.

Our method is to investigate and assess the merits of potential cases early and efficiently, with the benefit of decades of trial experience. We then formulate a case for effective presentation at a hearing from the outset. The focus is to deliver robust advice supported by clinical analysis.

Our Method

This involves the application of highly developed forensic and accounting skills in gathering, analysing and presenting complex materials in a cogent and persuasive way. Many of our team members have financial or analytical backgrounds. This expertise, combined with our investment in technology, enables us to quickly cut to the heart of issues.

We work closely with our clients and other professionals on all aspects of the investigation, analysis, strategy, presentation and resolution of legal claims to achieve outstanding results.

Above all, we strive for excellence and are committed to the pursuit of superior outcomes for our clients.

Lipman Karas comprises over 80 professionals working across our offices in Australia, Hong Kong and London.

Our team members are selectively recruited for their superior skills, drive and commitment to excellence. We invest significant resources in developing and nurturing our team. As such, we have exceptional team retention and steady growth, ensuring stability and continuity for our clients.

LK has an established training program, and our lawyers are encouraged to attend seminars and workshops to stay up-to-date with the latest legal and industry developments.

We also encourage the pursuit of post-graduate study and/or Associateships to Justices of the Supreme and Federal Courts.

We carefully put together optimal teams for each of our projects by combining specialist skills, experience and local knowledge. Each member of our team is integral to delivering outstanding results for our clients and ensuring that we exceed their expectations.

Lawyers who are self-motivated, and possess strong analytical, technical, communication and interpersonal skills excel at LK. The highest personal integrity is essential. In return LK offers consistently challenging work on projects that are exceptional for their size, complexity and geographic reach.
