Tune Up Your ActivitiesWith Jazz

Before you cast on for aknitting project or take a swing atyour golf putting, cue up somejazz musicto accompany you. Of all themany musical genres, jazz hasbeen shown to be the mosteffective at enhancing the finemotor skills used in activitiessuch as golf putting, knitting, sewing and painting.Researchers say the music’scalming effect can improveperformance skills and frees themind to focus on creativity.

Switch Hands for aBrain Boost

Exercising your brain can beas easy as switching hands.Doctors advise engaging in afamiliar activity using yournon-dominant hand. Try brushingyour teeth, using eating utensils, writing or drawing with your“wrong” hand. Forcing your otherhand to perform an unfamiliartask requires your brain to createnew neural pathways and canstimulate the brain’s cognitiveand creative functions.

Remembering Iwo JimaThe image of six U.S. Marines

raising the American flag on Iwo Jimais one of history’s most famousphotographs, having “recorded thesoul of a nation,” as it was laterdescribed. Every year on Feb. 23, IwoJima Day is observed to honor thatdefining moment and the brave menwho fought in the World War II battle.

Located about halfway betweenJapan and the Mariana Islands, thetiny island of Iwo Jima was needed asa strategic landing site for AmericanB-29 bombers. Beginning Feb. 19,1945, three Marine divisions totaling70,000 men battled 21,000 Japanesetroops who were entrenched in asophisticated underground network ofcaves and tunnels.

On March 26, the U.S. declared theisland secure after five weeks offighting. During that time, nearly7,000 Americans were killed and20,000 wounded, with 27 menawarded the Medal of Honor, thecountry’s highest military awardfor bravery.

The enduring image of theflag-raising on Mount Suribachi, captured by press photographerJoe Rosenthal, is immortalized as asculpture at the U.S. Marine CorpsWar Memorial outside ArlingtonNational Cemetery.
