INFANT BAPTISMS For children under 7 years of age, the sacrament is celebrated the FIRST Sunday of the month at 2:00 pm. The parents must register in the parish office at least 4 weeks prior to the baptism. Both parents and godparents are expected to attend one catechetical session in advance, on the Wednesday before the baptism, at 7:00 pm.

SACRAMENTS OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION Before being fully initiated into the sacramental life of the Church, children over the age of 7 will need catechetical prepa-ration through the RCIC process. Teenagers and adults will par-ticipate in separate RCIA processes. CONFIRMATION and COMMUNION For those already baptized, preparation for these Sacraments will take place according to the person’s age and knowledge of the Catholic Faith. For further information contact the Office of Faith Formation Program.

MARRIAGES Couples should contact the parish office at least six months in advance to make the proper ar rangements for the Sacrament of Matrimony.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Dear Parishioners, We are in the second week of the six weeks of Lent. In five weeks it will be Easter Sunday! The word Lent comes from an Old English word that means the lengthening of days or springtime. This week Wednesday is the first day of spring. For many of us, the idea of spring coming gives an uplift-ing feeling. We look forward to more sunshine and warmer weather. At the same time, in our faith life, the anticipation of celebrating Easter uplifts us spiritually because we know that it is the saving action of Jesus that rescues us from the destruction of from sin and death. We are reminded of the importance of having physical daylight from the positive changes that come naturally from more sunlight giving us vitamin D and better moods as well as artificially in Day-light Savings time we are encouraged to be more activity and it helps increase safety in traffic and on the streets. In Lent, we are reminded of the importance of the illumination and warmth of God’s love that comes from allowing God to take away the darkness of corruption and sin in our lives. It is a process we go through to slowly allow God to penetrate our lives and raise us up from whatever separates us from him. In the upcoming weeks, one of the invitations and reminders you will hear is to give alms. The Annual Catholic Appeal is a source of funding that supports different services in the Diocese. It is a way that you can share your resources to shed light on people in need through services that the church offers all over Brooklyn and Queens. Please pray about how much you can help the work of Church to be a beacon of light for those in need in our neighborhoods as well as helping to sustain the church internally as well. I thank you for your donations last year and I thank you for donations that you generously give each year.

Fast and Abstinence

Good Friday, April 19th, is a day of Fast and Abstinence. Limit of one full meal on this day for those who are 18 years old and have not reached 60.

Days of Abstinence

All Fridays of Lent those who are over 14 years of age abstain totally from meat.

El 19 de abril es Viernes Santo, es día de Ayuno y Abstinencia. Se limita a una comida completa durante este día para los mayores de 18 años hasta adultos de 60.

DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PÁRROCO Queridos Feligreses:

Nosotros estamos en la segunda semana de las seis semanas de Cuaresma. ¡En cinco semanas será el domingo de Pascua! La palabra Cuaresma proviene de una palabra en inglés antiguo que signifi-ca el alargamiento de los días o la primavera. Esta semana el miércoles es el primer día de pri-mavera. Para muchos de nosotros, la idea de la llegada de la primavera da una sensación edifican-te. Esperamos más sol y un clima más cálido. Al mismo tiempo, en nuestra vida de fe, la antici-pación de la celebración de la Pascua nos eleva espiritualmente porque sabemos que es la acción sal-vadora de Jesús la que nos rescata de la destrucción del pecado y la muerte. Nos recuerdan la importancia de tener luz física a partir de los cambios positivos que surgen natu-ralmente de una mayor cantidad de luz solar que nos proporciona vitamina D y mejores estados de ánimo, así como también artificialmente en el horario de verano. Se nos alienta a realizar más ac-tividades y ayuda a aumentar la seguridad en el tráfico y en las calles. En la Cuaresma, se nos recuerda la importancia de la iluminación y el calor del amor de Dios que se obtiene al permitir que Dios quite la oscuridad de la corrupción y el pecado en nuestras vidas. Es un proceso por el que pasamos para permitir que Dios penetre en nuestras vidas y nos levante de lo que nos separa de él. En las próximas semanas, una de las invitaciones y recordatorios que escuchará es dar limosna. El Llamado Católico Anual es una fuente de financiamiento que apoya diferentes servicios en la Diócesis. Es una forma en que puede compartir sus recursos para arrojar luz sobre las personas necesitadas a través de los servicios que la iglesia ofrece en Brooklyn y Queens. Por favor ore acerca de cuánto puede ayudar a la obra de la Iglesia a ser un faro de luz para los necesitados en nuestros vecindarios, así como también a ayudar a la iglesia internamente. Les agradezco sus donaciones el año pasado y les agradezco las donaciones que generosamente donan cada año.

SPECIAL MASS IN HONOR OF ST. JOSEPH Next Tuesday, March 19th is the Solemnity of St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. There will be Masses at 7 AM and 8:30 AM in his honor.

Church Regulations Regarding Fast and Abstinence

Abstinence from meat (beast or fowl) is to be observed by all Catholics fourteen (14) years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent. This obligation prohibits the eating of meat, but not eggs, milk products, or condiments of any kind, even though made from animal fat.

Fasting means limiting oneself to one full meal on a given fast day. Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. La abstinencia de carne (animal o ave) debe ser observada por todos los católicos 14 años de edad y mayores el dia Miércoles de Ceniza y todos los viernes de Cuaresma. Esta obligación prohíbe el consumo de carne, pero no los huevos, los productos lácteos, condimentos o de cualquier tipo, a pesar de que contienen grasa de animal.

Ayunar significa limitándose a solo una comida completa en un día. Católicos entre las edades 18 y 59 años están obligados a ayunar el Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo.
