Mission Statement Our Lady of Good

Counsel Parish Lawrence ~ Methuen

Our Lady of Good Counsel is a diverse multi-cultural parish serving the Catholic community of Methuen and Lawrence. We are committed

to building a community of faith intent upon God, in unity of mind and heart.

We are a family of believers, joined by our Baptism, and nurtured by the Eucharist.

As children of God, we endeavor to bring the love of Christ to all we meet. We are committed to be the Body of Christ, rooted in the tradition of the Catholic Church. Together we worship

and praise our God. Guided by prayer and the counsel of the Blessed Mother, we minister to the community through faith formation, fellow-

ship, and service. With diligence, compas-sion, and love we endeavor to help others

come to know and love Jesus. Empowered by grace, constant in our mission, we strive to

be led by the Holy Spirit.

March 22, 2020 Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish , Methuen ~ Lawrence Fourth Sunday of Lent

Dear Parishioners, This week we have a powerful reading from the Gospel of John, the story of the healing of the man born blind in John 9. Jesus uses this encounter with the blind man to teach people about spiritual blindness. The ques-tion raised is “whose fault is it that this man is blind? Is it because he is a sinner or is it because his parents are sinners?” Jesus settles that question in short order with the words “Neither this man nor his parents sinned; he was born blind so that God’s works might be revealed in him.” Does that mean that God willed that the man be blind so that he would be available for Jesus to perform this miracle? Is he like an extra on a movie set waiting around forever until he’s finally called in to action? That strikes me as very cruel. Instead, doesn’t Jesus make the point that in nature there will always be some born able and some born disa-bled? In the animal kingdom only the strong survive. In a humanity that is called to follow a commandment of love the disabled are not shunned or neglected, but rather provide us with the means and motivation to love. The obligations we bear towards one another provide countless stories of inspiration of love in action. Wheth-er you are “walking for a cure” or “pledging to end” this disease or that, or supporting those with disabilities to live full and equal lives you are doing the work of God, and you are about the work of Love. In this system of thinking the world is a richer place because of the disabled. Cardinal Sean brought this point out in a homi-ly he gave a few years ago about the cleansing of the Temple. After the Temple was cleansed of the money-changers the “blind and the lame” came into the Temple and went to Jesus and were healed. They had been excluded from the Temple for centuries, which you can read about in Leviticus 21:17-24 and 2 Samuel 5:6-8, and also see Matthew 21:14. Jesus changes forever a rule that was made long before He came; the disabled will have a place in the Temple, and have a place in society. But to be guided by Christ in how we treat our disabled sisters and brothers is just one small lesson we can draw from this week’s readings. A much more important lesson is to understand who Christ is. He tells us in this passage. When the blind man is cured it causes such a scandal that he is thrown out of the synagogue. “When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, he found him and said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” He answered and said, “Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” Jesus said to him, “You have seen him; the one speaking with you is he.” Before healing the man Jesus said “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” Jesus proclaims that he is the light of the world because his life among men has given us the ultimate meaning of the world, of the life of every man and every woman, and of mankind as a whole. Without Jesus all creation is in darkness, it does not understand itself; it does not know where it is going. “Only in the mystery of the Incarnate Word does the mystery of man take on light. […] Through Christ and in Christ, the riddles of sorrow and death grow meaningful; apart from his Gospel they overwhelm us” (Vatican II, Gaudium et spes, 22). There is a strength that comes from the Holy Spirit that enables us to be strong in the midst of great difficulty, and to persevere in faith even in the midst of suffering and pain. This is the spiritual sight that Jesus calls us to today. He IS the Light of the World, and in His Light we see Light and know the splendor of God! God Bless, Fr. Chris

A Letter from Fr. Chris. . . Dear Parishioners,

We are living through an incredibly difficult period of time as we take all these precautions to isolate from one another as a means to counter the spread of the Covid-19 Virus. As extreme as the measures like cancelling Masses and closing restaurants are, I’m sure we all pray that these are the correct strategies for stunting the spread of the virus while our medical professionals develop treatments, vaccines, and cures. We need to pray diligently for them and their success, as well as all on the front lines in fighting the pandemic, its spread, and dealing with patients.

The Catholic Church is a Communion of Love. We live that communion primarily by coming togeth-

er at Mass and sharing the Word and the Sacrament of Holy Communion. To be without the Mass, even tem-porarily, seems to be the opposite of being Catholic. However, we are bound together by Love, which is the Spirit of the Living God that unites us together in a union not only with each other, but with the world in its entirety and with our God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. That Love is nourished by the Eucharist and by our coming together, and it is also nourished by our generous prayer for each other. Let us live through these diffi-cult days strengthened by the knowledge of God’s closeness to us and continue to battle the darkness with the Light of Christ who is our strength. I find great encouragement and consolation in the words of Pope Bene-dict’s beautiful encyclical Deus Caritas Est, God Is Love, #39 where he wrote: “Faith, hope and charity go together. Hope is practiced through the virtue of patience, which continues to do good even in the face of ap-parent failure, and through the virtue of humility, which accepts God’s mystery and trusts him even at times of darkness. Faith tells us that God has given his Son for our sakes and gives us the victorious certainty that it is really true: God is love! It thus transforms our impatience and our doubts into the sure hope that God holds the world in his hands and that, as the dramatic imagery of the end of the Book of Revelation points out, in spite of all darkness he ultimately triumphs in glory. Faith, which sees the love of God revealed in the pierced heart of Jesus on the Cross, gives rise to love. Love is the light—and in the end, the only light—that can al-ways illuminate a world grown dim and give us the courage needed to keep living and working. Love is possi-ble, and we are able to practice it because we are created in the image of God. To experience love and in this way to cause the light of God to enter into the world—this is the invitation I would like to extend with the pre-sent Encyclical.” (Benedict XVI. (2005). Deus Caritas Est. Vatican City: Libreria Editrice Vaticana)

We may not be together, but we are not alone. We are united in the Spirit of God. Practicing constant

prayer, we can experience a spiritual closeness to each other as brothers and sisters, and to our God, whose love conquers all. I call your attention to the beautiful letter and prayer offered by Archbishop Jose Gomez, President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, which is included with this bulletin. Until we are together again, let us pray for each other, and for the whole world! Have mercy on us, dear Lord, have mercy!

God Bless, Fr. Chris

USCCB President’s Reflection and Prayer During Coronavirus March 13, 2020 WASHINGTON- Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, has issued the following regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19):

With the worldwide outbreak of the coronavirus, we are confronted once more with the fragility of our lives, and again we are reminded of our common humanity — that the peoples of this world are our brothers and sisters, that we are all one family under God.

God does not abandon us, he goes with us even now in this time of trial and testing. In this moment, it is important for us to anchor our hearts in the hope that we have in Jesus Christ. Now is the time to intensify our prayers and sacrifices for the love of God and the love of our neighbor. Let us draw closer to one another in our love for him, and rediscover the things that truly matter in our lives.

United with our Holy Father Pope Francis, let us pray in solidarity for our brothers and sisters here and around the world who are sick. Let us pray for those who have lost loved ones to this virus. May God console them and grant them peace.

We pray also for doctors, nurses, and caregivers, for public health officials and all civic leaders. May God grant them courage and prudence as they seek to respond to this emergency with compassion and in service to the common good.

In this time of need, I invite all the faithful to seek together the maternal intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and I share this prayer with you:

Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas. We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you did at the wedding in Cana.

Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness.

For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust.

In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind. Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts.

We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy.

Shelter us under the mantle of your protection, keep us in the embrace of your arms, help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen.
