OUR LADY OF GRACE
NEWSLETTER
Welcome back to term 3, I hope you all enjoyed some extra time with
your children over the break.
We come back to a very full term 3, with lots of activities and events
to complement our learning at Our Lady of Grace School. Please
take note of the dates of school concert, School Masses and parent
sessions.
We especially welcome back Suzanne Goh, who is returning from
long service leave. Suzanne will be working in a variety of teaching
roles over the next 2 terms, in all the Villages. She will be working with
small focus groups, especially in literacy and maths. Suzanne will also
replace any teachers who are on leave – helping with continuity of
learning in the Villages.
Welcome also to Charlie, who joins our OLOG community in the R/1
Village this week. The learners in the R/1 Village have been very
welcoming and displayed our Big 5 Learner Values:
• Be Christ-Like
• Be Respectful
• Be Supportive
• Be Safe
• Be Brave
Amanda and I spent the last 3 days of term 2 attending a course
designed to deepen our understanding of teaching students with
dyslexia and evidence based multi-sensory teaching. Good
teaching in literacy, especially phonics based, is a focus of our
professional learning this year. We will be sharing our learning with all
staff and continue to develop a whole school scope and sequence.
A reminder we have an excellent parent session on offer this term, for
parents/carers of learners in all year levels.

Our learners look wonderful in their school uniforms,
and we ask that you continue to support our
uniform policy.
I have noticed a few learners who have come back
from holidays with coloured sneakers. Learners are
able to wear black or white sneakers only.
Visible Learning
On Tuesday, I joined staff from Marymount College
and Sacred Heart Middle School to further our
understanding about what makes for great learning
in schools! The day was very affirming as the
information presented is based on strong research
and is evident in what we are working on at Our
Lady of Grace School. The Professional Learning
around Visible Learning is focused on John Hattie’s
research. It draws on John’s internationally
acclaimed research in Visible Learning: A Synthesis
of over 800 meta-analyses relating to achievement
(2009) and his book Visible Learning for Teachers:
Maximising impact of learning (2012). This research
involved millions of students and represents the
largest ever evidence-based research into what
actually works best in schools to improve learning.
The research tells us that the things that have the
most significant impact are all about making
learning visible (and explicit) to students. This is
reflected in the work we are doing in developing
learner identities in our learners: questioning,
thinking, connecting, reflecting, persisting and
managing. The diagram below comes from the
Visible Learning, Foundation (Corwin Education
2017).
Thank you for your continuing support.

The FLoSS Rule
Whenever a one syllable word with a short
vowel sound ends in a F, L, S or Z, we double
the last letter- the Floss Rule. FLoSS rule reminds
us to double the final consonant in words with:
One syllable
One Short vowel
End in ‘f’ ‘l’ ‘s’ ‘z’
For example:
skill dress frizz cliff toss stuff bell buzz
Here is a clip explaining the rule:

This year we will be participating in the
Woolworths Earn & Learn program. Through
this program we will be able to get new
educational resources for our school – and
all we need you to do is shop for your

From Father Anthony Kain…
VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE REALITIES
What did you see at the Baptism of your
child? Water, certainly, but not water alone;
you saw our families gathered, the priest or
deacon exercising the ritual, asking questions
and calling this child to holiness, wholeness.
Someone from your family read a passage of
scripture, someone led the Prayers of the
Faithful, the Priest blessed the water and it
was poured over your child’s head. Your
child was then anointed with the oil of Chrism
to be used again at their confirmation, they
were given the light of Christ as the
Godparents lit their baptismal candle, their
ears and mouth were touched by the priest
praying that they would hear the word of
God and act upon it. We gathered at the
altar where the child would receive
communion later on and we were blessed,
first the mother, then the father and then all
of us who were to journey with your child
through time to eternity.
St Paul taught us to look not at what is visible
but at what is invisible; for visible things will
pass away but the invisible things are eternal.
The invisible aspect of the baptism of your
child is that they were given eternal life that
day and set out on a journey of discovery
and faith. At Baptism we believe that the
invisible God is a present God and is at work;
we are called to have faith in what God does
that day and throughout the years of our lives
This is a very ancient mystery written about in
the first book of the Bible, Genesis, and
brought to the present moment by our ritual.
‘In the beginning God made the heaven
and the earth…The Spirit moved upon the
waters. And God said “Let there be light”
and this is the light of God that is invisible but
always active in our lives; from that light all
creation came, especially us. Your child was
drawn out of darkness to light by the water,
the candle and the laying on of hands.
We invite you to a Sunday Mass to pray
especially for your children whom we ask to
be present in the great Act of Faith that is the
mystery we enter into, a mystery that will
sustain their lives now and always.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data
Students with Disability:
Once again this year our school has been asked
to implement the Nationally Consistent Collection
of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD).
From 2015, all government and non-government
schools in Australia are required to participate
annually in the Nationally Consistent Collection of
Data on School Students with Disability. The Data
Collection will provide all Australian schools,
education authorities and the community with
nationally consistent information about the
number of school students with disability and the
level of adjustment being made to enable the
students to access and participate on the same
basis as their peers. The information needs to be
reported by the 4th August 2017.
Students’ personal details will be de-identified in
the data collection and aggregated information
will be provided to Catholic Education SA who will
further de-identify and aggregate the data
before providing the data to the Department of
Education.
Parents/Carers can decide whether they want
their child’s information to be included in the Data
Collection. Please notify Amanda Walker if you do
not want your child’s data included. There are no
consequences for not participating in the
Nationally Consistent Collection of Data.
Please contact me if you have any questions in
relation to this process.
