Many Catholics from around the State of Georgia have contacted Catholic Chari-ties in Savannah asking about ways to assist our brothers and sisters in south Georgia. According to officials with the Diocese of Savannah, it is preferable at this time to work with agencies already on the ground providing aid and assistance to affected families; e.g., the American Red Cross. If you would like to contribute to help ease the pain and suffering of our sisters and brothes in South Georgia please send your donation to the American Red Cross. We may contribute electronically at www.redcross.org by clicking on the Donate tab, choosing Donate Online, and then, under “I Want to Support,” selecting “Southern Tornadoes and Storms.” According to the bishops of Georgia, the important thing is not the way our Catholic families assist, but rather that we do. The Beatitudes –a way of life, a map to happiness Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Week of January 29, 2017 Listen to the Word (Matthew 5:1 — 12) When you heard the Beatitudes proclaimed today, which one struck you? What one word from this reading lingers now in your memory? Look into your life Question for children: Choose one of the Beatitudes and share how you will make it part of your life. Question for youth: Jesus gives us a plan for our happiness in the beatitudes. Do the things that make you happiest also lead you towards God? Do they follow God’s plan? Question for adults: How do you describe what it means to be “blest” in your own life? Activities for the week Take these activities to futher reflect: As a family, read the Beatitudes together. Have each family member reflect on one of the Beatitudes that he or she finds most meaningful. Invite each person to share his or her Beatitude out loud. After one of the Beatitudes is shared, everyone prays, “Blessed are you!” Discuss the Beatitudes with your child. Help your child find mag-azine pictures of things that bring happiness to him or her or to the family. Have your child cut out a picture that represents his or her favorite Beatitude. Read the Beatitudes and discuss what they mean with your family. Print a different Beatitude each day on a sheet of paper. Each evening discuss how your family can carry out this Beatitude. Brainstorm as a family: Happiness is... Talk about ways that your family is happy or blessed. Create a happy corner on your refrigerator. ULTREYA All parishioners who have participated in either a Cursillo Weekend, a Walk to Em-maus Weekend, a Three Days Weekend, or a Christ Renews His Parish weekend and all parishioners interested in finding out more about the spirituality of the Cur-sillo movement are invited to attend and participate in the parish Ultreya on the 2nd Sunday of the month after the 11:00am Mass. Saint Eulalia (born in Barcelona c. 290 – died on 12 February 303) was a 13-year-old Roman Christian virgin who suffered martyrdom in Barcelona during the persecution of Christians in the reign of emperor Diocletian. The tradition surrounded St. Eulalia recalls that because she refused to recant her Christiani-ty, she was subjected to thirteen tortures; including: putting her into a barrel with knives stuck into it and rolling it down a street (according to tradition, the one now called Baixada de Santa Eulalia or Saint Eulalia's descent), also cutting off her breasts, crucifixion on an X-shaped cross and finally decapitation. A dove is supposed to have flown forth from her neck following her de-capitation. She is depicted with an X-chaped cross, the instru-ment of her martyrdom. The festival of Saint Eulalia is held in Barcelona for a week around her feast day on February 12. The devotion to St. Eulalia is found also among the people of Guatemala, especially among the people in the Municipality of St. Eulalia, Department of Huehuetenango. The Mercedarian Friars (Order of the Blessed Virgin of Mercy) who were responsi-ble for the evangelizatioin of the region, might have brought with them the devotion to St. Olaya (St. Eulalia) around the 16th cen-tury. However, there are many legends about the arrival of St. Eulalia to the region. Many of our Guatemalan parishioners come from St. Eulalia and therefore have a particular devotion to her patron saint. Every year they celebrate the Memorial of St. Eulalia. This year we are all invited to join the devotees of St. Eulalia and pray a novena in her honor to help us prepare to celebrate her memo-rial. Prayer of St. Eulalia in her agony Lord Jesus Christ, hear my prayer and perfect your merciful goodness in me, grant me to be received among the number of your elect into the rest of life eternal, making of me a sign of righteousness, that all who believe in you may behold and praise your power. Building the Domestic Church The Family Fully Alive Enrichment Program. Building the Domestic Church is a worldwide initiative sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. Starting the first week of January, 2017, the Knights of Columbus will sponsor a program designed to spiritually nourish family life. This initiative refers to activities focused on promoting the new evangelization, strengthening our parishes and growing the Order. It is designed to help members, their families and all parishioners reflect the holiness of the universal Church. In promoting each family as a domestic church, the Knights of Columbus primarily seeks to integrate the knights and their fami-lies more fully into the sacramental and social life of the parish.
