M 25, 2018 2 — O L L V C C

Holy Week begins this weekend with our observance of Palm Sunday. This is the most sacred time of the year for Christians. During this week our focus is on the most important events in the earthly life of Jesus: His suffering, death and resurrection; also known as the Paschal Mystery. Palm Sunday begins the solemn memorial of Jesus’ last days on earth and the events that lead up to his death and resurrection. The liturgy of Palm Sunday begins with the blessing of palm branches and the reading of the Gospel narrative of Jesus’

triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Palm Sunday is also known as Passion Sunday because, during mass, the lengthy Gospel narrative of the Passion of Jesus is read. This year we read from the narrative according to St. Mark. Lent actually comes to an end this week on Holy Thursday. In the evening of Holy Thursday, the short, three-day liturgical season, called the Easter Triduum, begins. The Easter Triduum encompasses the events of the Last Supper, the crucifixion and death of Jesus on Good Friday, the burial of Jesus, and finally the resurrection on Easter Sunday. The Holy Thursday evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper remembers the last meal Jesus shared with his Apostles. It recalls the institution of the Sacraments of the Eucharist and Holy Orders. The holy oils that were consecrated by the bishop at the Chrism Mass in the cathedral are presented for sacramental use in the parish throughout the year. The liturgy of the washing of feet occurs to remember how Jesus washed the feet of His Apostles and prepared them for service. At the end of Mass the Eucharist is taken to the Altar of Repose and all the ornaments and furnishings in the sanctuary are taken away so it is left bare as a reminder that Jesus was taken away into custody and will face his crucifixion the next day. Good Friday is the somber memorial of Jesus’ horrific crucifixion and death on the cross. It is a day of fasting and penance. It is a day for personal reflection and examination of conscience. The church is bare on Good Friday. Mass is not celebrated this day. Instead, the liturgy of Good Friday is celebrated, which includes the reading of the Passion of Jesus according to St. John, the solemn General Intercessions of the Church, the veneration of the cross by all the faithful, and the reception of Holy Communion using the Eucharist that was consecrated at the evening mass of Holy Thursday. At the end of this liturgy, the congregation departs in reverent silence. Holy Saturday is the day that the Church somberly waits at the tomb of the Lord. It is a tradition that baskets of food items that will be eaten for breakfast on Easter Sunday are blessed on this day. Food blessings will be at 11:00am in English, and 12:00pm and 1:00pm in Polish. The Easter Vigil begins at dusk on Holy Saturday. It is the powerful celebration of the resurrection of Jesus. The liturgy begins with the blessing of new fire, which reminds us that Christ is the Light of the World. Several selected passages from the Old Testament are read reminding us of God’s ever faithful covenant with His people throughout history. Water is blessed and new Christians are baptized into the Catholic faith. The newly baptized, and baptized Christians who have been preparing through the RCIA program, will complete the process of initiation into the Catholic Church by receiving the sacraments of the Eucharist and Confirmation. Easter Sunday masses will follow the regular Sunday Schedule. The nine day novena to the Divine Mercy begins on Good Friday, and concludes on the Sunday after Easter. The entire schedule of the Divine Mercy Novena can be found on page 4 of the bulletin. Please see the back page of the bulletin for the Holy Week schedule. I hope that you will be able to participate in some of the liturgies of Holy Week. Through our participation, may we come into greater communion with our crucified and risen Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Fr. Gerry

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, As we journeyed through the Season of Lent, our thoughts may have turned to places of the Holy Land where our Lord lived, ministered, died, and rose from the dead. You may have been blessed to experience these holy places first hand. Whether first hand or a passage from the bible, our memories bring this ancient land to life. However, the reality of the current situation in the Holy Land often does not match the scenes of our imagination. On Good Friday, the annual collection taken in our churches will benefit Christians living in the Holy Land, as well as support the ministries of the Franciscan friars entrusted with its care. For almost 800 years, the Franciscans have cared for the principal shrines of our Christian faith. The work of the friars also includes the care of refugees and those marginalized people throughout the region and the preservation of the Holy Land’s missions and schools. These schools and parishes are signs of present, as well as future, peace and hope. The Collection for the Holy Land, in the words of Paul VI is "not only for the Holy Places but above all for those pastoral, charitable, educational, and social works which the Church supports in the Holy Land for the welfare of their Christian brethren and of the local communities." The Pontifical Good Friday Collection is applied to these programs below: Faith, Memory & Culture – The Holy Places Holy Land Franciscans staff and maintain the Holy places and shrines. This enables those who live in the Holy Land and those who visit to deepen their faith and their spiritual and cultural connection to Salvation history. Social & Charitable Activities In order to assist Christians to remain in the Holy Land, including the poor and young couples, the Custody builds thousands of residential units. Additionally, they build senior care facilities. Medical assistance is provided for the needy. Educational & Scientific Activities The Franciscans operate and support schools open to all, regardless of religion or nationality. They provide scholarships for students to prepare them to get jobs and remain in the Holy Land as part of living Catholic communities. Funds are distributed to young men studying to become Franciscan priests or brothers. Finally, Franciscan archaeologists pursue ongoing research at the Holy Places discovering historical artifacts. Pastoral Activities The Franciscans provide pastoral care in 29 parishes in the Holy Land offering Worship, Christian Formation, youth and family programs. Liturgical, Ecumenical and Communications Programs The Franciscan Media Center tells the story of the Holy Land through multimedia distributed throughout the world in more than seven languages. The friars organize Liturgical Celebrations for the local Christians and Pilgrims and share with other Christian communities in the Holy Land in ongoing Ecumenical cooperation. Please be as generous as your abundance allows. Donating to the Good Friday Annual Collection allows the “living stones” to inhabit the Holy Places, provides indispensable support to the Franciscan Custody and their mission, but in doing so, bears witness to the Resurrection of Christ. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Joseph A. Pepe, D.D., J.C.D. Bishop of Las Vegas
