FOR: THE HOMELESS YLI is collecting a variety of items to be donated to various organizations in Selah and Yakima that. are providing outreach to the homeless in our area. There will be a collection box in Mel Allen Hall for donations. Items needed include: Back Packs - Toiletries - Socks - Gloves - Hand and Feet Warmers - Sweaters - Hats - Blankets - Zip Lock Bags, etc. FOR: BIRTHRIGHT, A PRO-LIFE ORGANIZATION
YLI will be collecting donations in January of cash and new or gently used baby clothing or disposable diapers that will be delivered to the Yakima Birthright center at the end of the month. Donations may be left at the OLL Church office. Thank you!

It is Christmas! Our Gospel reading on this festive holy day is the opening words of the Gospel of John. St. John says, “The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came to be through him.” That is why we celebrate today. Pope Francis opened his sermon on Christmas day last year by saying this: “Christmas is joy, religious joy, an inner joy of light and peace.”
The prophet Isaiah again records a remarkable prophecy in our First Reading from the Book of Isaiah. Within the context of that Scriptural reading Isaiah says, “The people who walked in dark-ness have seen a great light.” Just prior to that Isaiah speaks of two areas of Israel that are also the names of two of the twelve tribes of Israel — Zebulon and Naphtali. These tribes were located at the northern end of Israel adjacent to the Sea of Galilee. When the Assyrians invaded and occu-pied Israel, it was the northern tribes like Zebulon and Naphtali that suffered the most. It was they on whom the greatest gloom and darkness descended. However, the prophecy speaks of the coming of the Messiah, the birth of Jesus, the Light of the World. Thus, “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.” Christ is still the light of the world, and He still provides this light and hope to those of us who may feel like we are in dark-ness and distress. We must embrace Him nonetheless and follow His way by becoming His disciple. If we do that, our lives will indeed be filled with light and great rejoicing. It is up to us to respond. Abortion is a human rights issue, but politically speaking, it does involve competing rights. On the one hand, you have the mother's "right" not to be pregnant. On the other hand, you have the baby's right not to be killed. The question that must therefore be answered is which right is more fundamental? Abortion advocates argue that out-lawing abortion would, in essence, elevate the rights of the unborn over and above those of the mother. However, in reality, outlawing abortion would not be giving unborn children more rights; it would simply re-establish for them the most fundamental right that no one can live without, namely the right to life. If a baby is not to be aborted, then the pregnant mother must remain pregnant. This will also require of her sickness, fatigue, reduced mobility, an enlarged body and some new clothes. Fortunately, it is not a permanent condition. On the flip side, for a pregnant woman not to be pregnant, her child must be killed (unless she is past 22 weeks of pregnancy, in which case the baby may well survive outside the womb). Abor-tion costs the unborn child his or her very life and it is a thor-oughly permanent condition. That is what's at stake, both for the child and for the mother. It is not an issue of who is more im-portant, but rather who has more on the line. Any time there are competing rights, the government must protect the more funda-mental right. For example, the law requires the driver of a car to slow down and stop so a pedestrian may cross the road in front of him. This is not because the pedestrian is more valuable or im-portant than the driver, but rather because, if the driver does not stop, it might cost the pedestrian his life. Obviously, for a woman to remain pregnant, she gives up far more than a few minutes of drive time, but she gives up far less than her baby who would otherwise be killed.
