A MESSAGE FROM OUR BISHOPMy Dear Friends in Christ, There is a pressing issuebefore our country today - the future of a veryimportant group of young immigrants called the“Dreamers”. The Dreamers are the 1.8 millionyoung people who were brought to the U.S. as

children by their parents. They often know America as theironly home. Dreamers are woven into the fabric of our countryand of our Church. Dreamers live out their daily lives with hopeand find a determination to flourish and contribute in society.Through no fault of their own, they are living in constant fear ofdeportation. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops hasasked bishops to inform their faithful of the national “Call-inDay” to Congress this coming Monday, February 26, 2018.Individuals across the country will be calling their Senators andRepresentatives to urge them to support a legislative solutionto give Dreamers protection and a path to citizenship beforethe March 5th deadline. There are flyers with all the informationyou need, including toll free numbers to call and leave amessage you can share with your legislators. With every best,I remain Sincerely yours in ChristMost Reverend Arthur J Serratelli, S.T.D., S.S.L., D.D.Bishop of Paterson.

LITURGY CORNERFASTING AND ABSTINENCE Lent began with thecelebration of Ash Wednesday on February 14th thisyear. It has always been an important custom of ourCatholic tradition and faith to fast and abstain. But it

can be very hard to actually understand and know exactly howto or what it means to “fast” and/or “abstain”. These arevaluable and important activities that are meant to include ourbodies with our spiritual and motivational goals. Fasting andabstaining cannot be merely in our thoughts or intentions.Every Friday in Lent is a day of abstinence, which means wedo not eat any meat. This is done to acknowledge that Christdied for us on a Friday. Every baptized Catholic over the age of14 years should abstain from meat on all Fridays of Lent.

FAITH AT HOMEThe Transfiguration of Jesus stands apart fromother stories in his ministry. Jesus’ transcendent

nature is displayed to the disciples as he stands betweenMoses and Elijah. But his revelation promises, to thosewho believe in him, a similar glory. Adults: Can Iremember a time when it was clear to me that I wasbeloved of God? Children: How can I always rememberthat I am a beloved child of God? A Family Perspective:Every family has special moments that they rememberand share again and again. In sharing these stories, themeaning and importance of these events develop anddeepen over time. This is how it was with the disciples'remembrance of Jesus' Transfiguration. The fullsignificance of what they had seen and experiencedcould only be understood after Jesus' death andResurrection. As they told other believers about this eventand recorded the story for us in the Bible, ourunderstanding of what it means to call Jesus God's ownSon has also deepened. As you gather as a family, thinkabout some special family memories that your family tellsover and over again. Talk about why these memories areimportant to you. Recall that in the Bible we find manyimportant memories about Jesus that have beenrecorded for us so that we can believe that Jesus is God'sSon.

Dear friends,

While we continue our Lenten Journey, we have some prelude of spring. After the big snow lastSaturday night we enjoyed wonderful weather and all is now melted. I couldn’t believe onWednesday we had a high temperature of 75 ¨H. It is a nice break for us to experience days likethose of this past week during the Season of Lent. It reminds us of the springtime and with it, ofthe Easter Season when everything will be full of life and joy. Let us give thanks to our Lord forhaving these foretastes of His glory.

The sacrament of Confession is one way of restoring our friendship with the Lord. No wonder theChurch emphasizes the practice of this Sacrament during the Lenten Season in order that thefaithful prepare themselves for the celebration of Easter with hearts pleasing to God. As you know,we have our Diocesan “Welcome Home to Healing” program every Monday from 7:00PM-8:30PM.At every parish in the Diocese of Paterson, the doors of the Church are open to welcome thefaithful who would like to receive forgiveness through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Here atOLM it is celebrated at our Chapel. All are welcome; however, you actually can go to any parish ofthe Diocese. The Last Monday of Lent before Holy Week, March 19th, we will have our ParishPenance Service and this will take place at the Church. We also will celebrate the Sacrament ofReconciliation with our children from Religious Formation and with our teens from ourConfirmation Program as we did for Advent. Just yesterday, we had First Penance with ourchildren who are receiving their First Eucharist in May. It is a great joy to see how the relationshipbetween our children and God is growing.

Another opportunity to be more prayerful during Lent is our Stations of the Cross on Fridays. Thislong time Church devotion takes place every Friday of Lent at our Chapel. This year the Stationsare guided by a different group of people from our parish and it becomes another way toparticipate in the Liturgical life of the parish family. The last Friday now that we will have Stations, will be on Good Friday night and it will be guided by the clergy of our parish.

Finally, I want to express my gratitude to those who are coming to the 12:05PM Mass at theChapel Monday-Friday. I wanted to start this new Mass during the Season of Lent as anotheropportunity to be at Mass for people of our Parish, but also for the workers who may want toattend Mass during Lent. I sent a letter to Bayer and Met Life inviting them to our Mass since I seethat during Holy Days of Obligation some of them come here. We put a banner outside the Chapelannouncing it also. To my surprise, more and more people from our Parish are coming to our12:05Pm Mass also. I am very happy to give you another chance to be at Mass during the LentenSeason and see that this initiative was not in vain.

My dear friends, through little things our Lord shows us his mercy and love. We can meet Him inthe most unexpected places and people. The Lenten Season invites us to find His presenceamong us in our daily lives. Let us use these opportunities to find Him right here in our ParishFamily.

God bless you all,

Fr. Roberto
