“Jesus said to him, ‘Go and do likewise.’” (Luke 10:37)
This was Jesus’ command at the end of the Good Samaritan story. Did you know that the Samaritans
and Jews despised each other. The moral of the story is to love our neighbor. That means loving someone you may not know or someone that looks different
than you or someone that you don’t like. All without expecting anything in return.

Please remember to "make up" your weekly gift to our parish when you are away at your "summer home" or on a much deserved vacation. OLMV doesn't take a vacation and we are called upon to meet our financial obligations even during the summer. Thanks for you assistance each week.

On July 1st the Vatican announced that Blessed John Henry Newman would be canonized a saint of the Universal Church on October 13. Newman (1801 – 1890) was a theologian, a poet, and a priest. He was first an Anglican priest, but then converted to Catholicism in 1845. Already recognized as a leading churchman of his times, Newman’s conversion strained his relationship with both family and friends. He was ordained a Catholic priest in Rome in 1846. There is no room here to do justice to all the accomplishments of this leading educator, scholar, and defender of Catholicism. Suffice it to say that in recognition of his work for the Church, Pope Leo XIII elevated Newman to the rank of cardinal in 1879, a rare honor for one who was neither a bishop nor the head of a dicastery in Rome. Newman took as his motto, cor ad cor loquitur, heart speaks to heart.
It gave me great joy to see this important Nineteenth Century Catholic convert and apologetic being recognized as a saint. My history with Newman goes back to my undergraduate days at the University of Pennsylvania. While there I was an active member of, and eventually president of, the Newman Association. Newman Associations are the official Catholic presence on non-Catholic college and university campuses. The movement was started in 1893 at Penn. Some 25 years after graduating from Penn, I again found myself affiliated with Newman. It was then that I began my studies at the Maryvale Institute, a center for Catholic learning located just outside of Birmingham, England, where I was eventually awarded both a bachelors and a masters degree in theology. It was at Maryvale that Newman resided following his conversion to Catholicism.
At Maryvale I had the opportunity to visit and spend time in Newman’s room, which famously had a
window through which Newman could see into the chapel and pray before the Blessed Sacrament. I had the rare opportunity to be present for Newman’s beatification by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010 which took place in Birmingham. I remember it being a typically Birmingham kind of day, overcast and drizzling. That is until the papal helicopter appeared. Then, almost on cue, the sun came out and remained out until the Mass ended and the Pope departed, when, again almost on cue, the drizzle returned. Finally, while I was on my diaconate assignment in Littleton, Massachusetts during my final year in seminary, I became friends with a charming parishioner who turned out to be one of the closest living relatives of Newman. Carol and her husband have graciously invited me to join them for the canonization in Rome.
Newman is perhaps the greatest Catholic author and scholar of the Nineteenth Century. I would not be
at all surprised if in the not too distant future he is declared a Doctor of the Church. Among the many quotes attributed to Newman, I would offer the following for your reflection:
“A man would do nothing if he waited until he could do it so well that no one could find fault.” “We can believe what we choose. We are answerable for what we choose to believe.”
“If we are intended for great ends, we are called to great hazards.”

PARISH REGISTRATION: In order to be considered a registered parishioner, an adult (persons 21 years of age or older) must complete and submit a registration form. These forms can be picked up at the parish office. Completed forms must be brought to the parish in person. Please remind young adults (family and friends) that they must be separately registered with the parish. To be eligible to receive sacraments or to receive sponsor letters, persons must be registered and active members of OLMV.
ELIGIBILITY LETTERS FOR GODPARENTS AND SPONSORS: Canon Law requires that a person seeking a “sponsor letter” to serve as a godparent for the Sacrament of Baptism or a sponsor for the Sacrament of Confirmation must have received all three Sacraments of Initiation and be a Confirmed Catholic who is active in his or her parish and, if married, be in a valid, Catholic marriage. An “active” Catholic is understood to be a person who is registered, attends Mass regularly, contributes to the support of the Church, and whose lifestyle is in keeping with the Catholic faith. They must ensure that their own school age children are attending Mass, are enrolled in religious education, and have received their sacraments.
