INRI by Rev. Paul Turner Atop a crucifix in a Catholic church or home is

sometimes found the inscription INRI. The letters commonly appear on a banner affixed to the uppermost quadrant of the cross above the head of the cruci fied Christ. Not all crucifixes bear the letters, but many do.

The letters abbreviate the Latin inscription Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudæorum, or “Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews.” According to John’s gospel (19:19-22), Pontius Pilate ordered this inscription to give the name and hometown of the victim and to publicize the grounds for his execution. Soldiers wrote the words in Hebrew, Latin and Greek—the languages of the Old Testament, the Roman government, and the New Testament. In Christian art, the words are sometimes completely spelled out, but more commonly the Latin text is rendered as a simple acronym.

The chief priests of the Jews objected that Pilate should have written, “This man said, I am King of the Jews.” Pilate refused to change the text. His reply became a chilling aphorism of authority in Latin: “Quod scripsi scripsi.” “What I have written, I have written.” Thus Pilate let stand the words intended for condemnation, now transformed as affirmation. Pilate would not acknowledge the kingship of Jesus in the trial, but he proclaimed it publicly—if sarcastically—on the cross.

The inscription appears in the other gospels (Mark 15:26, Matthew 27:37, and Luke 23:38), each time with slightly different wording. These are the only known words written about Jesus during his lifetime. To believers, they affirm the humanity and divine royalty of Jesus.

In Rome, the Church of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem claims to have the relic of the original sign. Copyright © 2012 Resource Publications, Inc. 160 E. Virginia St. #170, San Jose, CA 95112, (408) 286-8505.

CELEBRATE YEAR OF THE EUCHARIST Archdiocese of Seattle June 14, 2020—June 6, 2021. Archbishop Paul D. Etienne invites everyone to celebrate a Year of the Eucharist. Through this year of prayer and study, we will foster and strengthen our celebration of the incredible gift of the Eucharist. Over the next year, we’ll explore different dimensions of the Eucharist, echoing the shape of the Mass: Gathering – What makes us community? (It’s the Eucharist, of course!) Word – How the Scriptures can come to life in our lives. Presence – The Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, the center of Church and of our lives. Sending – Our mission to carry on the work of Jesus – serving the poor and vulnerable, proclaiming the Gospel, and sanctifying the world. We encourage you to join in the celebration of the Year of the Eucharist. Visit http://www.seattlearchdiocese.org/ for more information.

INDOOR MASS GUIDELINES We will begin to have indoor Mass (Church/Hall) that permits a maximum of 40 people in each facility. While we enjoy the good news to celebrate Mass indoor, we are taking every precaution and will follow all necessary guidelines. Furthermore, the obligation to attend Sunday Mass will remain dispensed for the time so we will continue to live-stream the outdoor Mass as we slowly resume the public celebration of Mass. Before reserving a space, please read the following. Mass will continue to livestream at 10:00 AM on Facebook.

GENERAL INFORMATION Anyone attending public Mass does so at their own risk. Anyone who has even the slightest symptoms or feelings of sickness must remain home. Vulnerable and at-risk persons should remain home. Parishioners are required to sign-up for Mass as each Mass Please self-assess your temperature before attending Mass. Bring: your own mask, hand sanitizer, glove If using the restroom, please keep 6 feet apart from each other and sanitize after yourselves (all areas you touched)

when finished. No childcare will be available. Parishioners must check in upon arrival.

LITURGY Special dispensation remains in place. We will continue to live-stream the 10:00 AM Sunday Mass. Masses will be shortened to reduce exposure. No collection during the Mass instead, baskets will be placed near the church entrance (you are invited to drop off

your contribution upon arrival or right after you receive Communion). No presentation of the gifts by the faithful. No exchange of the sign of peace. No congregational singing. No cantor or choir. Children’s Liturgy of the Word will be discontinued during this time. Celebrant will not greet parishioners before and after Mass.

DISTRIBUTION OF COMMUNION The Precious Blood will be consumed by the Priest only. Communion must be received on the hand only (not on the mouth) – with flattened palm rather than cupped hand. Holy Communion will be distributed at the end of Mass. When departing after Communion, continue to maintain

physical distancing.

SIGN UP Visit the parish website to make a reservation through Mission Pathways. When signing up, select the facility preference (Church or Hall). Enter the number of people in your household that will be attending Mass. Please note – contact information will be required for mitigation (information will be kept on file for 30 days). If you do not have access to internet, please call Maggie at 425-888-2974 ext. 2 BEFORE 5:00 pm on Fridays. When

calling, please leave a voicemail and include: your name, phone number, how many people in your household will be joining you, and the Mass you will be attending

PHYSICAL DISTANCING Parishioners will be ushered to their seats after checking in (please no gatherings to socialize or greet others before

or after Mass). Physical distancing must be practiced at all times on Church property (minimum of six feet apart, except members of

the same household). Hand sanitizers will be available inside the church/hall buildings. Based on requirements from the Archdiocese and State, facial coverings/masks are required and need to cover the

nose. If you don’t have one, we are to provide you with one (please know that we have a limited supply). If you are unable to wear a mask for medical reasons or unwilling, please continue to attend the livestream until these restrictions are removed.
