The cultivation of a spiritual garden of the soul is very similar. The more difficult the dispositions of the people you encounter, the more necessary it is for you to increasenot to decrease your efforts, even though no results are apparent at all. Take heart because God, the Master of the spiritual field entrusted to you, will lovingly bless the efforts of a faithful and tireless laborer, and will reward you. The Promise of God’s Presence

I have never been called to go and stand on a mountain, like Elijah was. I have never been invited to walk to Jesus on water, like Peter was. I once got a job offer-a summer job, teaching basicreading and math in a men’s prison. Everything about thiswas scary, but it was my only job offer, and I needed the money. Like Peter, I cried out, “Lord, save me.” Knowingthat God was with me, I broke through the fear, got the joband that wonderful prison experience has colored my life to this day. We have all taken steps out in faith. In scary momentswhen we are faced with a life-changing, faith-testing decision-the new job, the new relationship, the new life path-faith in God is all we have. Our faith emboldens us to call out to the One who says, “Take heart, it is I; do not beafraid.” Things might not always turn out the way we want them to, but God remains with us to see us through it. Let us give thanks for God’s presence and for our calling, as we step forth in faith to answer that call.

Scripture Insights

In Romans 9, Paul turns from discussing an Adamic humanity to the people who have descended from Abraham.Earlier Paul asserted the priority of Jews in God’s salvationplans (Romans 1:16; 2:9-10). Paul has already asked in Romans 3: 1-8 if the Jews’ rejection of the messiah can revoke the entrusting of God’s Word given to them, and hence whether God is faithful. This issue is important, especially given the long anti-Jewish history of the Christ-ian church. Just as-and because-Paul adamantly declared God’s goodness and generosity in Romans 8, he will arguefiercely for Israel’s salvation and God’s faithfulness.

We see Jesus’ faithful determination to save in our Gospel reading today. Although the disciples mistook himas a ghost and Peter doubted, Jesus walks on the stormy sea to join them and reaches out to save sinking Peter. Psalm 85 and Elijah’s story in 1 Kings 19 affirm this divine and faithful determination to save. Because of Jezebel’s death threat against him, Elijah becomes fearful, runs away, feels sorry for himself, and even asks God to take his life. But God’s angel provides for him, and God assures him that he still has a mission to perform and that God will have a faithful following despite how things may look (1 Kings 19: 15-18). Paul also expresses a wish for self-destruction in Romans 9, not as a way to end one’s disappointment, but so his fellow Jews would replace him in God’s redemption. To be condemned and cast off himself so others would be saved is precisely what happened to Jesus. By alluding to this, Paul points to God’s faithfulness while showing his own commitment to salvation through solidarity withJesus’ suffering.

What implications does this divine and faithful determination to redeem have for us today?

How may we mistake setbacks or detours as divine failures?

Whenwe find ourselves in deserted places, we seek to have the courage to meet the Lord in whatever way he appears and allow ourselves to be transformed. Seek inspiration in the witness of those lives have been transformed by their encounter with God. Who has been an example for you, showing courage to meet God wherever God chooses to be revealed? Consider the new perspective that emerged from Thomas Merton’s openness to encountering God. In Conjec- tures of a Guilty Bystander, he wrote of standing on a corner in Louisville, Kentucky, and realizing that he is at one with each person there. He writes, “I have the immense joy of being man, a member of a race in which God Himself became incarnate.” In your prayer seek to encounter God as a friend and restin the knowledge of God’s love for you.
