Mission Statement Under the protection of the Mother of God,
We are a faith community called by the Father, energized by the Son, and moved by the Spirit to
unite in witnessing and proclaiming the Good News.
We share in friendship, gather in worship, and do proclaim our desire to
minister, welcome, celebrate and extend His
Kingdom.
Our Lady of the Woods Parish Orland Park, Illinois
June 9, 2019 Pentecost Sunday

Dear Parishioners, This weekend nearly 250 parishioners from Our Lady of the Woods and five adjoining parishes are constructing homes for the needy at the St. George Parish parking lot in Tinley Park. This same
weekend, over 60 young people and their adult leaders are leaving for Harlan County, Kentucky, to assist those in need. These events share a common purpose and that is to provide housing for those in need. This is actually a Gospel imperative. We will be judged on how we feed, clothe, and shelter others. We will be judged on the way that we welcome a stranger or care for someone who is ill. All of these actions enhance human dignity. Every person is made in God’s image and that is often forgotten. Last week two events occurred which should cause us to reflect on the mystery of life in its earliest stages. In Illinois, the misnamed “Reproductive Health Act” was rushed to passage in the Illinois legislature. There is no doubt that the governor will sign it. There is a line from the bill that is worth reflecting upon. It says the following, “a fertilized egg, embryo, or fetus, does not have independent rights under the laws of this state”. That same week, Sharp Mary Birch Hospital released information about Baby Saybie, who was born 23 weeks after conception (at under 9 ounces) and is now home with her parents. Yet in Illinois a fetus much farther along from conception is not entitled to independent rights. A fetus that can begin to hear at 18 weeks and knows his or her mother’s voice at the beginning of the third trimester is not to have “independent rights”. This means that he or she is not considered a human being yet. This should all give us pause. One of the criticisms leveled at pro-life actions is that we care only about life in the womb. It is my experience that this is largely false. Most of those seeking to protect life care about men, women, and children. Sadly, however, I have had conversations with some who seem to validate that incorrect image. Pro-life means respecting the lives of all people. It is more than pro-birth and we must assist people at every level. And it is my experience that most people and groups committed to protecting the unborn try to do that. For the past three months we have had an account with FORMED. Many of you have signed up. FORMED is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about your faith at no cost. You can go to the parish website and information about FORMED will appear. Follow the prompts and you can register to receive movies, books, and courses, all at no cost. Finally, I had the privilege of traveling to Saginaw, Michigan last week for the priestly ordination of Matt Federico, who served as a seminarian and deacon at Our Lady of the Woods. It was a beautiful day and Matt will do well in his first assignment. In Christ,
Father Mike
