PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Parents and guardians, welcome to the month of November. During
this month, we will be teaching the children about the virtue of peace as
well as highlighting the importance of peacemaking and what it takes to
live peacefully in a community that is filled with people of different
abilities, race, cultures and values. We will be emphasizing the need to
accept people for who they are as well as respect the rights and opinion of
others. As St. John Paul II once said, “Peace is not just the absence of war,
it involves mutual respect and confidence between peoples and nations. It
involves collaboration and binding agreements.” Please support the staff
and I in discussing this with your child as we strive to make our school
community a respectful and nonjudgmental one.
Sincerely, G. Danfulani
Virtue: Peace “Blessed are the peacemaker, for they will be
called children of God.” (Matthew 5:9)

Guidance Corner
As the time for Progress Reports gets closer, help your child focus on their Learning Skills and Work Habits. Responsibility, Collaboration, Initiative, Self-Regulation. Organization and Independent Work are key skills that help students take ownership for their learning, and allow them to be more successful in all areas of the curriculum. Intermediate students will be setting goals based on their Learning Skills in their Individual Pathways Plan (IPP). More information on the Learning Skills and Work Habits and how to help your child develop them, can be found at the following links: http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/policyfunding/growSuccess.pdf (pgs. 10-14) http://www.fslhomeworktoolbox.ca/homework_tips/learning_skills_and_work_habits.php November is also Bullying Prevention month across Canada. You can help your child recognize the signs of bullying and what to do if they or someone they know is being targeted. In our age of technology, bullying can happen electronically, as well as face-to-face. Be aware of your child's activities online by asking them to show you what they are doing, and by ensuring that they are using their devices in a prominent area of the home. Building empathy and compassion for other people's feelings, is key to stopping bullying before it starts. Here are some helpful websites you may wish to visit:

https://www.tcdsb.org/ProgramsServices/SafeSchools/BullyingAwarenessAndPrevention/Pages/default.aspx It's a busy time for Grade 8 students and the transition to High School! Open house nights took place last month, and the online application process through SOAR was initiated. As indicated on the application form, the closer the high school is to your child's elementary school, the greater the chance of acceptance. If your child is redirected, there are no guarantees of placement at the alternate choice school. The redirection will be to the closest high school that has space. Also, the TCDSB does not have access to information for high schools outside of our own board. You will be receiving a Transition Guide for Parents, which contains important information regarding the transition to high school. There are translated guides in a number of languages, are available online.
Catholic Graduate Expectations Virtue of the month is
Peace
Peace Affirmations:
Peace begins within ourselves and is an inner state of well-being and calm. People of peace promote non-violence, practice conflict resolution, and believe in cooperating to solve problems. The root of the Hebrew word for peace, "shalom," means "whole" and points to this twofold meaning: peace within oneself and peace between people. Peace is a goal of all spiritual people.

On October 2, the grade two students attended a performance by an Indigenous Storyteller at the Mount Dennis Public Library. The puppet show was called The Adventures of Rabbit and Bear Paws. Our students were a great audience and some of the students even took part in the performance. What did our students think about the puppet show? "The story was about animals.” (E.) “My favorite animal in the show is the turtle because turtles are slow.” (L.) “The students pretended to be the puppet animals by running around the room." (F.) “It was exciting when the puppets were talking funny.” (M.) Thank you to Karen at the Mount Dennis Public Library for the invite and to all our parents who
volunteered their time to come with us. Little Red Theatre comes to O.L.V

Our Lady’s Garden
Thank you to our ME/DD students and staff for taking care of our
Lady’s garden by ensuring it is clean and cared for. Planting the
bulbs will truly create a beautiful garden in the spring.
Goodbye…
It has been a difficult month as we had to
say goodbye to some very special people in
our school community. Educational
Assistance have hearts of gold working with
our most precious students. Ms. Luongo
and Ms. Quintero have been a huge part of
our OLV family for a long time and have
given to our students on a daily basis. We
wish you both the best of luck on your new
journey. You will be missed.
May God Bless you both always.
Our Kindergarteners celebrated the month of October with the Virtue on Gratitude. Children learned that the word Gratitude means being thankful and appreciative of the small and big things they have because they are from special people and most of all, from Jesus. The children sang the song: “Thank you God,” read stories about “Give Thanks” and “Thanksgiving,” recited “Funny Turkey,” hand painted turkeys during Art, sorted pumpkins and pinecones during Math time. They have also expressed their thankfulness by writing a short prayer to Jesus. Our children learned the importance of saying “Thank You” not only in words but by showing kind gestures to people by shaking hands, greeting with a smile, playing nicely with others and giving a hug. We have started planting our “seed of gratitude” each day and letting it grow to become a beautiful tree as we do our very best each day :) Ms. Marzo & Ms. DaSilva

School Yard Safety
Parent/Guardian we ask for your support

we have plenty of supervision.
Thank you for your continued support.

Home/School Connection
Questions to ask your child when supporting them with
homework:
• What are you working on?
• What are you learning?
• Is it challenging or not? Why?
• What do you do when you are stuck on a task?
• How do you know you are on the right track?
• What resources do you use at school to complete this
kind of work?
• What resources do you need at home to complete this
kind of work?
Reflections for a parent
• Does my child have a quiet space to complete her/his
homework?
• Have I set the framework for homework routines?
• Do I monitor my child’s homework for completion?
• Can I give my child feedback based on the learning
goal and success criteria provided?
