Sunday, October 2, 2016 - Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
This Sunday, October 2, coffee and donuts will be served after all of the morning Masses, in the Marian Room. All are invited to stop down for a donut and conversation with your fellow parishioners.
This Friday, October 7, we will celebrate our parish Feast Day, the Feast of Our Lady of Victory (also called Our Lady of the Rosary). The Feast Day Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday morning. Of course, all are invited to attend. This is also the day on which we recognize those employees of the Our Lady of Victory Institutions (the Basilica, the Homes of Charity, and Baker Victory Services) who have served here for a significant number of years, thanking them for their service in keeping Father Baker’s legacy alive today. On Friday, say a prayer for them.
As you may know, each year in May, the Our Lady of Victory Homes of Charity sponsors a pilgrimage to some of the most beautiful shrines and churches in the world. Last spring, we were in Italy (Rome, Florence, Assisi, among other places). This coming year, from May 10 to May 19, we will be travelling to the heart of Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. We will begin in Vienna, Austria. Here we will visit the cathedrals, churches, and palaces associated with Imperial Austria. In Austria, we will also visit the city of Salzburg, home of the Van Trapp Family, and setting for the film “The Sound of Music,” then on to Innsbruck, in the Alps, and the famous village of Oberammergau, the home of the famous Passion Play. We will finish our pilgrimage in Lucerne, Switzerland. Each day, we will celebrate Mass in one of the most beautiful churches in Europe. Brochures for this pilgrimage can be found at the exits of the Basilica or at the rectory, along with a registration form. The cost is $3,395 (plus approximately a $195.00 departure tax), per person, double occupancy. If you have any questions, please contact me. It will be a great pilgrimage!
We have had the privilege of being one of the churches of the diocese and of the world to have had the Holy Door for this Jubilee Year of Mercy. It has brought many pilgrims and visitors to the Basilica – and, I am sure many graces to many people. Looking ahead to the fall calendar, the ceremony for the closing of the Holy Door will take place on Sunday, November 13, at the Noon Mass. On that day, all of the Holy Doors throughout the whole world, including St. Peter’s in Rome, will close. Remind anyone you know who has not been here to visit before that date.

Pray for the canonization of our founder, Venerable Nelson Baker
Sacrament of Baptism: Our Parish offers a special Pre-Baptism preparation program for parents who desire to share their faith with their children. Parents-to-be must attend this class prior to the birth of their child. Baptisms are usually scheduled two times each month. Call the Rectory to register for classes. Godparents must be Confirmed and practicing Catholics. Non-parishioners are required to have a Letter of Recommendation to serve as a sponsor.
Sacrament of Marriage:
To be married in the Basilica, you must be an active parishioner for at least 9 months prior to setting a date. Engaged couples should contact the pastor before making other wedding arrangements. Couples are required to attend a Pre-Cana Conference, or equivalent pre-marriage preparation program.
Letters of Recommendation:
Recommendations to act as sponsors for Baptism or Confirmation can be issued only to registered members of Our Lady of Victory Parish who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation, attend Mass and receive Holy Communion regularly, have their children attending a Catholic school or Religious Education class. If married, the marriage must be in conformity with the regulations of the Catholic Church.
Devotions:
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament begins immediately after the 12:10 p.m. Mass in the Basilica on Fridays and concludes with Benediction at 5:00 p.m.
First Friday:
On the eve of the First Friday of each month there are confessions from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Mass is celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on First Friday.
Care of the Sick:
Please notify the rectory office for a visit to any family member who is sick, in the hospital or confined to home. Regular home Communion visits are usually on the First Friday of the month by a priest, deacon, or minister of the Eucharist.

Summary of the Readings Twenty-seventh Sunday
in Ordinary Time
Many twelve-step programs use the phrase “Let go and let God.” In all their simplicity, these five words are the heart of today’s readings. For people who struggle with addictive behavior, these words plainly remind us that we can’t manage, control, or manipulate certain areas of our lives. How many times can we look back in our lives and find evidence of some plan at work other than our own? These are the moments when, for whatever reasons, we let someone greater than ourselves work the plan. We probably didn’t even recognize at the time that we were letting go of anything, but in retrospect, we see God’s hand and loving presence. It is our awareness of these moments that gives us the courage and initiative to let go again later on. It is this courage and initiative that are highlighted in today’s readings. Our Welcome Back to School signs are all put away and pumpkins and scare crows are making an appearance around the building.
Fall is here and along with the cooler temperatures comes studying and homework. Our students are getting into the swing of a happy school year.

Bible Study to Resume
Our Bible Study program will resume on November 7 and continue each Monday thereafter through December 19. Each session will be held in the OLV School Cafeteria, and sessions will begin at 7:00 p.m. We will be reviewing a new series developed by Bishop Barron entitled “Pivotal Players.” This new series is an examination of the lives and contributions of various Saints, Mystics, Evangelists and Artists. Subjects include St. Francis, St. Thomas Aquinas, Bl. John Henry Newman, St. Catherine of Siena, G. K. Chesterton and Michelangelo. All are welcome to attend.

Everyone (especially Altar & Rosary Society members) are invited to join us in the presentation of the “Living” Rosary, sponsored by the Altar & Rosary Society in honor of our Blessed Mother. This is our first effort and we hope to make this powerful prayer to Our Lady and annual event. All parish organizations are encouraged to participate.
The Traveling Chalice
Would you like to host the “Traveling Chalice” in your home to promote vocations to the priesthood and religious life?
Father Sam invites families with school-aged (including college-aged) children still living at home, to bring his personal chalice home for a week to help promote vocations through brief prayer each evening with your family.
The week begins with the presentation of the chalice at the end of a Saturday evening or Sunday Mass, and may be concluded with Father Sam celebrating a Mass in your home on the following Friday evening. Please contact Father Sam at the rectory at 716-828-9428 or [email protected] for more information or to sign –up.
Do You Feel You Might Be Called to the Priesthood?
Are you a young man in high school who thinks he might be called to the priesthood? Then consider meeting up with guys like yourself to discuss your thoughts and feelings about the priesthood with Father Andrew Lauricella, the Vocation Director. It is called the “St. Joseph Club.” Pick up a copy of the green pamphlet in the main vestibule of the church for more information. Talk to Father Sam, too!

Feast of Our Lady of Victory
Friday, October 7, is our feast day, the Feast of Our Lady of Victory, also called the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Our Feast Day Mass will be in the Basilica at 10:30 a.m., followed by a reception in Baker Hall School cafeteria. All are invited to attend.
Grief Support Group
The next meeting of the Grief Support Group will be held on Tuesday, October 4, at 12:45 p.m. in the Marian Room on the lower level of the Basilica. For more information, please call Father Romulus at 828-9425.

Are you new to the parish and not registered? Are your envelopes not coming to your home?
Are you a newlywed planning to remain in the parish?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, please call the rectory (828-9444) and help us to update our records. Many times mail is returned because of an incorrect address and this is costly to the parish.
Also, be sure to use your envelopes so that we can give you proper credit for your participation and financial support. This is important for your year end income tax preparation and also so that we can provide you with a letter of recommendation if you are asked to be a sponsor for Baptism or Confirmation.
