Message from St Aloysius Parish Priest St Aloysius Parish would like to invite you to a very special evening.

Tonight, we have invited St Joseph’s Choir and St Aloysius Junior School Choir to launch a very special couple of weeks at our church. We are hosting our first ever art exhibition which will showcase the talents of a wide variety of people within our local community.

If you look round the church you will see work from students from our local Catholic Secondary school (the displays you will see has work from Year 13 to Year 7); as well as this you see pieces of art from our parish school, and you will see artwork from pupils aged 11 to 3 years old. As well as this, you will see showcased work from Abacus Nursery school, from children as young as two. Finally, you will also have a chance to see photographs and artwork from the wider community of Hebburn. As part of this project we have invited pieces to be submitted from anyone who has an artistic talent for paintings or photographs. I hope that you enjoy looking at the artwork.

When thinking of the project we had two themes in mind. Firstly, ‘Our Local Community’ and secondly the theme of ‘Mercy’. The different groups have interpreted the themes in very different ways and I am really pleased with the way our church looks. Over the coming weeks I am hoping that the many visitors that pass through our doors enjoy the artwork.

I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to making this evening successful and anyone who has produced a piece of art to go with the exhibition. I would like to thank in particular; Wynn

Schembri who has played a key role in the Heritage Lottery bid, Carl Nixon who was helped set up the church this week and a variety of parishioners who have supported the exhibition with flow-ers and putting pictures up.

Thank you for your attendance and support. With very good wishes,

Fr Martin Morris

Heritage Lottery Fund have pledged 79% of the total cost for the

roof at St Aloysius (£132,000). In order to access the money we

have to exhibit an artwork display for the whole community. Our

display will be open until December 13th.

Greetings From the Head Teacher of St Aloysius

It is with great pleasure that I write this foreword to our concert at the launch of our exhibition. We are very proud to

have been asked by Fr Martin to sing tonight and thrilled to perform a small repertoire for you. Our choir meets at least once a

week with Miss Doughty and Mr Richardson and we love singing together; firstly - because we enjoy singing but secondly because we enjoy each other’s company. As a group, we regularly perform in front of the school, as well as this over the last year we have performed at a variety of venues around our local community, for example, in The Tyne Theatre (Newcastle), at the Customs House (in South Shields), in church at parish masses and at a variety of school wider school events. Our choir is made up of children from Year 4 and 5 and we are very proud of them. You will also have a chance to see our Year 3 and 6 Dancers who will perform for you and launch the musical extravaganza.

Over the last few months I have thoroughly enjoyed working closely with staff of St Joseph’s and Abacus Nursery to help to plan the art exhibition and the musical launch evening. It has been a pleasure to cement an already very strong relationship between our schools.

I know that you will enjoy our art work. Each year group enjoyed producing it and we are very proud of it now it is on display. Thank you to all our wonderful pupils and hard working staff; in particular Miss Clarke, Miss Doughty and Miss Kelly for co-ordinating the display of artwork.

We are really proud to be the parish school of St Aloysius and very proud to serve the community of Hebburn.

I know that you will enjoy tonight. Our Parents Association has organised nibbles afterwards so thank you to them and I do hope that following the concert you take some time to look at the artwork because it truly is something very special.

Welcome from St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy On behalf of the staff and students involved in the Creative Collaboration let me thank everyone for supporting tonight’s launch exhibition. It is a delight to see so many members of the school and parish communities joining together to celebrate the talents of our young people.

The exhibition has been many months in the making and has further strengthened the working relationship between St Aloysius Primary School and St Joseph’s Catholic Academy. Since September students from nursery to sixth form have produced individual pieces of work based on the theme ‘Mercy’ or ‘Our Community. The creative collaboration has enabled staff from St Joseph’s to work in St Aloysius school with students from various year groups and pupils from as young as Year 2 taking their first steps in to the world of St. Joseph’s.

Taking inspiration from ‘The sheep and the goats’ parable students worked with different media in Creative Arts Week (St Aloysius) and the school curriculum (St Joseph’s) to produce their work. Around church you will see clay work, textile items, etchings, Sellotape sculptures and illustrations to name just a few of the techniques employed. The work produced by Year 2 has been combined to form several decorative textile pieces. The patchworked panels reflect the joining together of the various aspects of our local community: St Aloysius primary school, St Joseph’s Catholic Academy and St Aloysius parish.

Also included in the exhibition are various pieces from our GCSE and A

Level students’ examination portfolios.

A special mention must go to St Aloysius staff and Mrs Crombie, Mrs Renwick, Mr Adlington and Mr McCaffery, our dedicated Art department, who have worked tirelessly with the students to produce the work on display tonight. Thanks also to Mr Nelson and Mr Middleton (Music

department) for creating the musical showcase.

I hope you enjoy the artwork and artefacts on display tonight. I am sure you will recognise the hard work involved and agree that the various pieces showcase the many talents within our community.
