  • FROM FATHER JOHN: By the President of the United States of America. A Proclamation – October 3rd, 1863. Our nation, and our American Catholic Church, will celebrate Thanksgiving this coming Thursday. Thanksgiving Day is one of my two favorite national holidays because it is a day in which we intentionally give thanks to God for the many graces and blessings He has given to us. I always like to spend a portion of my Thanksgiving Day in prayer and reflection because the one thing that I try to keep in mind is I have so very much to be thankful for in my own life. Prayer, scripture reading and reflection help me keep this in the forefront of my thoughts. But, even though each of us has so much to be grateful for, we need to remember that we do not give thanks alone but rather as one people, “one nation, under God”. We are a people of thanksgiving, so much so, that the aluminum cap that sits on the top of the Washington Monument has two words inscribed on it. The words are Laus Deo which literally means “Praise be to God” but can also be rendered as “Thanks be to God.” These two words Laus Deo, “Praise be to God”, “Thanks be to God”, often go unnoticed, out of sight and out of mind, but I think it is significant that they are placed on the top of the monument to George Washington, our first president, the father of our republic. It is this monument that overlooks our nation’s capital, the most powerful city in the world. It is the words “Praise be to God”, “Thanks be to God” that look down upon this city and across our great nation. It is a reminder that each of us, both individually and collectively, as members of our community of faith, have much to be thankful for, have many reasons to give thanks to God who showers us with His graces and blessings. The following is the gospel reading for Thanksgiving Day mass.

“As Jesus continued his journey to Jerusalem, he traveled through Samaria and Galilee. As he was entering a village, ten persons with leprosy met him. They stood at a distance from him and raised their voices, saying, ‘Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!’ And when he saw them, he said, ‘Go show yourselves to the priests.’ As they were going they were cleansed. And one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. He was a Samaritan. Jesus said in reply, ‘Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine? Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?’ Then he said to him, ‘Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.’ (Lk 17:11– 19)

It is telling the Samaritan is the only one who comes back to give thanks to God. The Samaritan was considered to be a foreigner, an alien and an enemy by the people of ancient Israel. Yet, he was the one who had the good sense to give thanks to God; “realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him.” Realizing, as the great Abraham Lincoln realized did when he established Thanksgiving Day as a national holiday as our nation was enduring the horrors of civil war. Namely, that God has given us countless blessings, that He has healed us in so many ways and that He has offered grace upon grace throughout our lives, let us return to the Lord, glorify God in a loud voice, and give Him thanks. By the President of the United States of America. A Proclamation. – “The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defense, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and Union.

  • The Story of the Advent Wreath

Advent wreaths were originally part of folk traditions of Northern Europe. Wreaths of evergreens were decorated with candles to

symbolize life and light and during the dark months of winter. Legend has it that Saint Boniface first gave the wreath its Christian meaning in the eighth

century, and we have been using these wreaths as part of our Advent preparation ever since.

The circle of the wreath, which has no beginning or end, symbolizes the

eternity of God. The evergreens signify continuous life. Each of the four candles represents on of the Sundays of Advent. The purple candles represent the prayer, penance, preparation and good works we are called to do during Advent. The color purple signifies the “royalty” of Jesus Christ. The pink candle is lit on the Third Sunday of Advent, which is the Sunday of rejoicing. The light of the candles reminds us that Jesus comes into the darkness of our lives to bring newness, life and hope. We gradually add more light each Sunday until Christ, our Light, comes at Christmas. Each week families are invited to take part in the beautiful tradition of lighting the Advent Wreath at the beginning of Mass. Please sign up in the Church Narthex and arrive to Mass at least 10-15 minutes early and check in with the Mass Captain and the priest as you will be processing in at the start of Mass. Please contact Connie Hinkleman @ [email protected] or call the Parish Office at 815-725-1527 if you have any questions.
