The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ June 7, 2015

I will take the cup of salvation, and call on the name

of the Lord. Alleluia Psalm 116-13

The word “thanksgiving” most often calls to our mind the holiday in November. But as early as the middle of the second century Justin Martyr referred to the blessed bread and wine of the Lord’s Supper as “food we call ‘thanksgiving’ ” (in Greek eucharistia). The Thanksgiv-ing we celebrate in the autumn is at times marked by a sort of proud societal self-congratulation and the con-sumption of food until we sink into an inert stupor. The “thanksgiving” that we call our Eucharist is just the oppo-site: we are led to it by an acknowledgment of our own failings; we remember our humble place in the scheme of things by giving praise to God alone. While the food of Christ’s body and blood fills our spiritual hungers, it also creates in us a greater hunger. We are not sent to our spiritual sofas to let the Lord’s Supper settle; we are sent to be living signs of that thanks-giving for the world by looking out for the poor and pow-erless, feeding the hungry, caring for the sick, speaking out against the self-righteous. In short, the hunger created by our doing in remembrance of Christ must lead us to living in remembrance of him.

Sister Celine Bautista (pictured right) is a Holy Redeem-er/St. James parishioner who encountered the joy of Christ in the Eucharist at a Life Teen retreat several years ago. Celine entered into the Dominican Sisters of Mary Mother of the Eucharist last year and is moving forward with her vows to receive her initial habit and new name on July 30th, 2015. Please keep Celine and her family in your prayers for her vocation.

Let Your Parish Be There For You Communion for Sick and Homebound Parishioners Please call the parish offices if you would like to receive Communion –we will make the arrangements with the Eucharistic Ministers to the Sick. Anointing of the Sick Please notify the parish office as early as possible for the Anointing of the Sick, the sacrament intended for the seriously ill or dying. It is Our Lord’s special presence and companionship in serious time of need. Anointing may take place in the home, at the hospital or elsewhere, and as often as once a month. If someone should die without anointing, remember that the desire to receive is sufficient and the Lord cares! If You Should Experience the Loss of a Loved One Please call the parish offices. If you feel you will be in need, or your loved one has passed, our Bereavement Ministers will assist in making arrangements with your chosen funeral directors and offer you helpful guidelines that will aid in the Liturgical planning of the Mass or Me-morial Service. We know that this can be a tough time and we want you to know that your parish is there for you.

Safeguard the Children DID YOU KNOW? You can help children know they are understood As parents, educators and volunteers, we want children to know that we are not only authori-ty figures in their lives, but also people they can trust. To foster authentic trust with children, it is important that they know that you understand them. One of the simplest ways to do this is by repeating back what children are telling you. When you do this, you are affirming to the child that they are heard and understood. For complete VIRTUS® Article and more communication tips email: [email protected].

Brothers’ Helpers Needs Your Help! Your generosity and the blessings of the Holy Spirit have Brothers’ Helpers to expand to a sixth church and a new meal service location: All Saints Episcopal Church in Highland Park. This changing area, be-tween South Pasadena and downtown, has many fami-lies, veterans and people in need, including homeless who live in encampments along the east side of the 110 freeway. What do they need most? Fresh water. Socks and blankets are high on their list as well. As we provide them with a hot, nutritious meal a few times a month, we pray for a source to more regularly provide fresh water. If you’d like to donate fresh wa-ter, clean socks, and new/ gently used clean blankets or sleeping bags, please drop them off at Healy Hall on Tuesday afternoons any time from 3:00 PM until 5:45 PM. If you or someone you know works for one of our local water bottlers and can make an introductions for us, it would be most appreciated. Your blessing will be many for helping those less fortunate.
