Our Mission StatementThe mission of the Lafayette Diocesan Foundation, Inc. is to encourage and facilitate

the growth and development of the Catholic Church within the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana by: 1. Promoting and assisting in securing new endowment funds; 2. Providing

information to the staff of prospects contemplating charitable gifts; 3. Serving as advisor for the management of endowment funds to maximize returns with prudent investment

practices; 4. Encouraging responsible stewardship through regular communications with the Pastoral Offi ce for Stewardship and Development; 5. Marketing.

Joseph A. Bonner Memorial

This year’s report is dedicated to the late Joseph A. “Joe” Bonner. Aft er reti ring as president of Lafayett e Bank & Trust Company in January 1997, he was named director of the fl edgling Lafayett e Diocesan Foundati on and became the diocese’s fi rst planned giving director.

Almost seven years later, on Dec. 31, 2003, Bonner reti red – again – but he conti nued to serve as the foundati on’s board chairman.

He died of colon cancer on June 21, 2014. He was 82.

“We need to energize these giving opportuniti es to meet the needs of the Church. Joe Bonner is just the one who can make it happen,” Bishop William L. Higi said in 1997. “We are fortunate to have someone with his knowledge and experience. I know that he is moti vated by his love for the Church.”

When the bishop asked him to work for the diocese, Bonner said he had misgivings. He asked himself, “Do I need another job? What is reti rement, anyway?”

Then, fatefully, he happened upon a passage from the Second Vati can Council’s “Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity.” It read:

“As parti cipants in the functi on of Christ, priest, prophet and king, lay men and women have an acti ve part in the life and acti on of the Church. Their acti on within Church communiti es is so necessary that without it the apostolate of bishops and pastors will frequently be unable to obtain its full eff ect. They will be always ready on the invitati on of their bishop to

make their own contributi on to diocesan undertakings … It is for Christi ans a duty and an honor to give God back a porti on of the goods they have received from Him.”

The die was cast. “I needed to think about the matt er no more…on Feb. 1, 1997, I took the job,” Bonner said.

He explained that his focus would be “planned giving – trusts, annuiti es, wills, long-term giving -- not annual giving.”

“We believe that the foundati on, like the mustard seed, will grow and fl ourish from these humble beginnings,” he wrote in his fi rst annual report.

It did. During his years as director, total contributi ons to the foundati on grew to nearly $3.8 million from $44,917. The number of funds set up to serve ministries rose to 41 from fi ve.

Bonner also led eff orts to expand the foundati on board to include clergy and laity. He formed the Crosier Society to recognize major donors. Committ ees were created to focus on strategic planning, fi nance, estate planning and marketi ng. Donors were introduced to opportuniti es to make restricted gift s, targeted to their special interests, and unrestricted gift s that could be spent at the discreti on of the bishop.

Bonner, a member of Blessed Sacrament Parish in West Lafayett e, graduated from St. Lawrence School, Lafayett e; St. Francis Seminary, Mt. Healthy, Ohio, and Duns Scotus College, Detroit. He earned a master’s degree from Purdue University.

He joined Lafayett e Bank & Trust in 1969. Aft er he reti red as president, he conti nued to serve as the bank’s board chairman unti l 2002.

Bonner was long acti ve in the community. Among other things, he was former chairman of the Greater Lafayett e Chamber of Commerce, and past president of the Lafayett e Area Catholic Schools Foundati on, Greater Lafayett e Community Foundati on, Inc. and Tippecanoe County Public Library Foundati on. The governor of Indiana named him a Sagamore of the Wabash in 1996.

Bonner and his wife, Joann, were married 52 years. They had four children, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Upon his death, in lieu of fl owers, the family asked that memorial gift s be made to fi ve local Catholic insti tuti ons. One of them was the Lafayett e Diocesan Foundati on.

Message from Bishop Doherty On each page, we recognize many good

works that these endowments fund. I

am grateful to those who donated to an

endowment or established a new one.

Each addition puts faith into action.

No bishop’s biography is entitled “Loves

going to meetings.” But the Foundation’s

board and board advisory committee

members, as well as our planned giving

officer, view their labors as a ministry.

They have a justifiable pride in this work,

and a sense of joy in benefiting others

in the Body of Christ. Well aware of

their fiduciary responsibilities, they

are attentive first to people, then to

processes and financial returns. You

should know, as they should, that I

enjoy my attendance at their meetings

because they bring together faith and

good human feeling.

Pope Francis said, “In the humble act of

washing his disciples’ feet, Jesus is showing

all Christians how he wants them to serve

others with love.” Two decades have

now passed with the Lafayette Diocesan

Foundation, Inc. lovingly serving the Body

of Christ. Through the volunteerism of its

board and board advisory committee, along

with hundreds of Christ-focused donors,

our Catholic roots have grown deep and

provided for the spiritual, physical and

financial needs of many.

Looking back we see a beautifully

landscaped path benefiting many travelers.

Bishop Higi, Joe Bonner, John Bodle and

others stewarded the Foundation along

the way. Those volunteers gifted their time,

talent and treasure in serving the Body of

Christ so that it could serve those in need.

Now it is our turn to continue their service.

You can continue or start your journey by

traveling through this annual report. It is

landscaped with personal witness notes

from former board members, donors and

recipients. Your time will be spent with

memorials of those who came before us

and endowments that provide for the needy

into the future. There are directional signs

from Pope Francis and travel tips from

those who are already on the journey.

Perhaps Pope Francis put it best: “Life

is a journey. When we stop, things don’t

go right.”

Donor Spotlight: Cindy Bouggy Cindy Bouggy was 37 when her breast cancer was detected. She was 55 when she succumbed to multiple myeloma in 2013. Her husband, Bob, a West Lafayette dentist, says that the “Cynthia L. Bouggy Memorial Fund” established through the Lafayette Diocesan Foundation, perpetuates her love of the Church. “We had four kids under the age of 10 when she was diagnosed,” he says of his wife of 31 years. “She wouldn’t let it stop her from doing things.”

After she died, a friend suggested the idea of a memorial fund. It was established April 20, 2014, Cindy’s 56th birthday. Bob’s gift was augmented by gifts from friends and family. As of December 31, 2014, the total was $22,280. The earnings will be used for projects within the diocese.

Cindy would be “humbled and surprised by how much we’ve accumulated in such a short time,” Bob says. “I’m very pleased we did it.”

Memorial Spotlight: Alice Van Handel’s LegacyRalph Van Handel loved books. He directed public libraries in three states and in four cities, including Lafayette. He was named “Indiana Librarian of the Year.” So when he died in 2002, at 83, his widow, Alice, worked through the Lafayette Diocesan Foundation to establish the “Van Handel Memorial Educational Endowment Fund” to buy library materials for Lafayette’s three Catholic grade schools. “I didn’t want Ralph’s name to be forgotten, and I wanted it to be associated with books,” she said a year ago. Mrs. Van Handel died Feb. 3, 2015 at 94, but thanks to her generosity and vision, the endowment will go on and on. “I hope the children are enjoying whatever they buy for them to read,” she said. “That is the main thing.”

Gifts Of SecuritiesYou can make a donation of stocks, bonds, or mutual funds

and take a charitable deduction for the current value of

the security.

Gifts Of Real EstateYou may make a gift of your residence, farm or vacation home,

and claim a charitable deduction for the current value of

the property.

Deferred GiftsDeferred gifts include:

• Bequests through a will or trust. For specific language,

please contact the foundation office.

• Gifts of life insurance. If you make the foundation the

owner as well as the beneficiary of a paid up policy, you

are entitled to an income tax deduction for roughly the

cash value of the policy. If you purchase a new policy

and name the foundation as sole owner and beneficiary,

you can claim a tax deduction for the amount of the

annual premium.

The Lafayette Diocesan Foundation acts as a central clearing

house, allowing the board and/or the donor to direct the funds

to support the various ministries in our diocese, a parish, a school,

or other ministry; is professionally manages, centralized, and cost-

effective; is an accountable way of financing a wide variety of

services within our diocese, a parish, a school, or other ministry.

There are many good reasons to invest in the foundation.

Here is a partial list of the benefits to donors and beneficiaries:

Simplicity It’s easy and convenient to make a donation to a new or

existing foundation account. A single gift can benefit several

worthwhile projects.

Performance A contribution to the foundation will benefit the diocese, a parish,

a school, or other ministry indefinitely.

Flexibility• A Donor Advised fund allows a donor to take an active role in

determining which charitable cause to support each year.

• A Designated fund allows a donor to support specific causes

into the future.

• A Field-of-Interest fund allows the donor to choose the area of

interest such as education, mission outreach, seminarians, etc.

• A Non-Restricted fund allows the Board of Directors maximum

flexibility in addressing the ever-changing needs of the

diocese and its ministries.

Tax Benefits Contributions to the Lafayette Diocesan Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3)

not-for-profit organization, qualify for maximum allowable tax deductions.


Professional Investment Management

The officers and directors of the Lafayette Diocesan Foundation,

Inc., acutely aware of their fiduciary responsibility, have elected

to use the same investment managers chosen by the Diocesan

Finance Council to manage diocesan assets.

These managers were selected after an exhaustive screening

process and have committed to manage investments in compliance

with a comprehensive Investment Policy approved by both the

Diocesan Finance Council and the Foundation Board.

The investment managers must adhere to diocesan social

responsibility guidelines. They have as their primary objective

the preservation of capital with an emphasis on its consistent

long-term growth, without undue exposure to risk.

A secondary focus is to be placed on income generation to assist

in providing for the Funds’ distributions. These objectives are to

be accomplished utilizing a strategy of equities, fixed income and

cash equivalents in a mix which is conducive to participation in

rising markets while allowing for protection in falling markets.

Gift Annuities: How it Works

Put a Lafayette Diocesan Foundation Gift Annuity to Work for YouHere is how the charitable gift annuity works. In exchange

for your gift of cash or securities, The Lafayette Diocesan

Foundation, Inc. agrees to pay a specified dollar amount

to you each year for as long as you live.

The annuity payments are based on the age of the annuitant(s)

at the time of the gift. For example, assume that Ima Older,

age 75, creates a gift annuity with a $20,000 cash gift to the

foundation. Her interest rate is 5.8%, which means she receives

a guaranteed, fixed annual payment of $1,160 for as long as she

lives. Equally important, Ima designates the balance to be given to

the Diocese of Lafayette Priests Retirement Fund. This gift carries

a federal income tax deduction in the year the gift is created!

• Minimum gift annuity amount is $5,000

• Payments begin at age 60

• Rates subject to change

Donors become eligible for membership in the Crosier Society

by pledging $2,000 each year for five years or by making a one-

time gift of $10,000. (The gift may be to the foundation itself,

to an existing endowment fund within the foundation, or to a

new fund established by the donor.)

Crosier Society members and their families will be invited

each year to a special Mass, celebrated by the bishop, and to

a reception following.

Member names are listed on a special plaque in the Bishop’s

Office. In addition, they will regularly receive information on

planned giving and other topics of interest.

Vision & MissionTo recognize benefactors that have contributed planned

gifts to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana,

its institutions and/or ministries.

MembershipAn individual or a couple may become a member of the

Saint Francis and Saint Clare Society. A Legacy in Giving

to the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana by gifting a planned

gift to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana.

Initiatives There will be an annual Mass and dinner with the bishop of

the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana for members

of the Saint Francis and Saint Clare Society: A Legacy in Giving

to the Diocese.

Joseph A. Bonner Memorial

This year’s report is dedicated to the late Joseph A. “Joe” Bonner. Aft er reti ring as president of Lafayett e Bank & Trust Company in January 1997, he was named director of the fl edgling Lafayett e Diocesan Foundati on and became the diocese’s fi rst planned giving director.

Almost seven years later, on Dec. 31, 2003, Bonner reti red – again – but he conti nued to serve as the foundati on’s board chairman.

He died of colon cancer on June 21, 2014. He was 82.

“We need to energize these giving opportuniti es to meet the needs of the Church. Joe Bonner is just the one who can make it happen,” Bishop William L. Higi said in 1997. “We are fortunate to have someone with his knowledge and experience. I know that he is moti vated by his love for the Church.”

When the bishop asked him to work for the diocese, Bonner said he had misgivings. He asked himself, “Do I need another job? What is reti rement, anyway?”

Then, fatefully, he happened upon a passage from the Second Vati can Council’s “Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity.” It read:

“As parti cipants in the functi on of Christ, priest, prophet and king, lay men and women have an acti ve part in the life and acti on of the Church. Their acti on within Church communiti es is so necessary that without it the apostolate of bishops and pastors will frequently be unable to obtain its full eff ect. They will be always ready on the invitati on of their bishop to

make their own contributi on to diocesan undertakings … It is for Christi ans a duty and an honor to give God back a porti on of the goods they have received from Him.”

The die was cast. “I needed to think about the matt er no more…on Feb. 1, 1997, I took the job,” Bonner said.

He explained that his focus would be “planned giving – trusts, annuiti es, wills, long-term giving -- not annual giving.”

“We believe that the foundati on, like the mustard seed, will grow and fl ourish from these humble beginnings,” he wrote in his fi rst annual report.

It did. During his years as director, total contributi ons to the foundati on grew to nearly $3.8 million from $44,917. The number of funds set up to serve ministries rose to 41 from fi ve.

Bonner also led eff orts to expand the foundati on board to include clergy and laity. He formed the Crosier Society to recognize major donors. Committ ees were created to focus on strategic planning, fi nance, estate planning and marketi ng. Donors were introduced to opportuniti es to make restricted gift s, targeted to their special interests, and unrestricted gift s that could be spent at the discreti on of the bishop.

Bonner, a member of Blessed Sacrament Parish in West Lafayett e, graduated from St. Lawrence School, Lafayett e; St. Francis Seminary, Mt. Healthy, Ohio, and Duns Scotus College, Detroit. He earned a master’s degree from Purdue University.

He joined Lafayett e Bank & Trust in 1969. Aft er he reti red as president, he conti nued to serve as the bank’s board chairman unti l 2002.

Bonner was long acti ve in the community. Among other things, he was former chairman of the Greater Lafayett e Chamber of Commerce, and past president of the Lafayett e Area Catholic Schools Foundati on, Greater Lafayett e Community Foundati on, Inc. and Tippecanoe County Public Library Foundati on. The governor of Indiana named him a Sagamore of the Wabash in 1996.

Bonner and his wife, Joann, were married 52 years. They had four children, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Upon his death, in lieu of fl owers, the family asked that memorial gift s be made to fi ve local Catholic insti tuti ons. One of them was the Lafayett e Diocesan Foundati on.
