YOU ARE A WORD SPOKEN BY GOD!

Good soil is critical to the harvest. In the 1930s, by deep-plowing, the farmers on the prairies of the high plains had ruined the land. They plowed so deep they displaced the deep-rooted grasses that trapped soil and moisture. Com-bined with severe droughts, devastation came. The great dust storms did the rest, displacing more than two million people. Today’s Gospel (Matt 13:1-23) presents us with a parable about seeds. After many perils, only the seeds that were sown in good soul were able to grow. They yielded much grain. The par-able teaches us to recognize that the seed is God’s invitation to us. We are the farmers who must prepare our soil to receive these seeds. If we are successful, then we will enjoy a bounteous spiritual harvest in our lives.

Although the parable of the sower, seed and soil is quite long, Matthew copies it almost without change from his source in Mark. Matthew does make one significant addition. In verses 14-16, he elaborates on the citation of Isaiah 6:9-10, explaining that knowledge of the kingdom of heaven is granted only to some. As Ben Witherington explains in The Gospel of Mark: “The parables give insight to the open-minded but come as a judgment on the obdurate…listening intently is the necessary prerequisite to understanding because no one has this knowledge already within them.” Aside from the explanation that Jesus himself gives, this Gospel hints much more at what it takes to receive the word of God. The key to the whole story is that the good soil was receptive. We see what that means by looking to the disciples who admitted that Jesus had confused them. “Why do you speak to them in parables?” was a question that really meant, “We don’t get it!” That was exactly the attitude they needed for Jesus to be able to break through to them, for the seed of his word to go deep into the interior space they opened with their questions. Just as the planting and harvesting were ongoing activities, so too, the word of God comes again and again, begging a hearing. When it comes to having ears to hear, this Gospel assured us that questions are more fruitful than answers.

Note from Jo-Ann Stigliano … Dear Parishioners of Our Mother of Good Counsel,

Immersed in Beauty and Holiness!

Hopefully, everything we’ve done together emanated from this vision, becoming the hallmark of our work as a worshiping community since my coming to be your Director of Music Ministries in November of ’05.

Everything we strove for concerning our Liturgies, was to elevate our prayers, the prayers of the faithful, by wedding them to the beauty and holiness of sacred music.

Whether singing the parts of the Mass, prayers, psalms, antiphons, hymns or anthems, we sang as one voice, lifting our hearts to God in thanksgiving, contrition, petition and praise. Through this, you have blessed me through the years as we experienced the full gamut of the Liturgical Seasons, Advent, Christmas, Lent, Holy Week, Easter and Ordinary Time, in tones of anticipation, solemnity, joy, sorrow and wonder. To be with you in this mission has become the most fulfilling aspect of my life’s work in music.

I pray that from time to time, our song touched souls, placed us in the presence of God, and reached our innermost places, that we would come to know a moment of the divine, which music can uniquely deliver. I am ever grateful that God called my heart from a wonderful career in music, to culminate in the ministry of music to His holy church, here among you, serving Our Mother of Good Counsel to my utmost.

Thank you for your prayers, love, support, care and friendship over the years and especially this special year of recovery. Your goodness brought me to a place of restoration, where I can now bridge my life’s work into a faith filled retirement journey.

With all my appreciation and looking forward to continued parish fellowship with a new view from the pew!

Sincerely yours in Christ, Jo-Ann

WELCOME Father Paul W. Galetto,

OSA

Fr. Paul is the newest member of the Augustinian friary here at OMGC. He is working on a project at Villanova. Fr. Paul has been in education most of his ministerial life, most recently in Chicago at St. Rita of Cascia High School; he has also served at St. Augustine Prep and Villanova University. Fr. Paul has also spent time in the missions in Peru, Nigeria, and South Africa.

One unique title that Fr. Paul holds is that he is the only Augustinian to have had a heart transplant. It took place a little over a year ago at the University of Chicago. He is doing well, and we will see him from time to time helping out here at OMGC.

THEMES OF CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING

United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

The Catholic approach to faithful citizenship begins with 7 moral principles, not party platforms. The directions for our public witness are found in Scripture and Catholic social teaching. The following are key themes at the heart of our Catholic social tradition.

5. Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers: The economy must serve people, not the other way around. Work is more than a way to make a living; it is a form of continuing participation in God’s act of creation. Work is a way of fulfilling part of our human potential given to us by God. If the dignity of work is to be protected, then the basic rights of workers, owners, and managers must be respected – the right to productive work, to decent and fair wages, to organize and join unions, to economic initiative, and to ownership and private property.

6. Solidarity: Because of the interdependence among all the members of the human family around the globe, we have a moral responsibility to commit ourselves to the common good at all levels: in local communities, in our nation, in the community of nations. We are our brothers and sisters’ keepers, wherever they may be. As Pope John Paul II has said, “We are all really responsible for all.”

7. Care for God’s Creation: The world that God created has been entrusted to us, yet our use of it must be directed by God’s plan for creation, not simply by our own benefit. Our stewardship of the earth is a kind of participation in God’s act of creating and sustaining the world. In our use of creation, we must be guided by our concern for the welfare of others, both around the world and for generations to come, and by a respect for the intrinsic worth and beauty of all God’s creatures.

LET ME LIVE GRACE-FULLY In Praise of Summer

Thank you, Gracious God, for this season of sun and slow motion,

of games and porch sitting, of picnics and light green fireflies

on heavy purple evenings; and praise for slight breezes.

It’s good, dear God, as the first long days of your creation.

Let this season be for me a time of gathering together the pieces

into which my busyness has broken me. O God, enable me now

to grow wise through reflection, peaceful through the song of the cricket, recreated through the laughter of play.

Most of all, O God, let me live easily and grace-fully for a spell,

so that I may see other souls deeply, share in a silence unhurried,

listen to the sound of sunlight and shadows, explore barefoot the land of forgotten dreams and

shy hopes, and find the right words to tell another who I am.

Ted Loder from Guerrillas of Grace

GOD’S WORDS Each day we are bombarded with thousands of words. From the moment our clocks click on in the morning, until the last moment of the day when the television is turned off or someone bids us “good-night,” our life is filled with words. Some words that we hear bring news that leaves us feeling low. Some words lift our spirits. Many of the words we hear are trying to get us to buy something. Some words are hurtful. Today the Church focuses our attention on hearing the word of God. Are God’s words just more of the same—part of the endless stream of words that flow into our ears each day? The challenge today is to allow God’s word to inspire us in new ways so that our outlook and attitudes align themselves more closely with the heart and mind of Christ Jesus.
