Our School Values: Aspiration, Confidence and Respect Term 4 Issue 33 – November 1 2019 Principal: Ms Simone Roy Phone: 03 5754 4005 Email: [email protected] Website: www.mbsc.vic.edu.au PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Congratulations to Nicole Lodge and the students who contributed their work to the Mount Beauty Secondary College Art and Technology Show held in the 2nd week of term. It was an opportunity for the senior students to show off what they have been working on for most of the year in Studio Art, Product Design and Technology (textiles), Media, Visual Communications & Designs and VET Furnishing and Engineering. There were also displays from middle school art classes and the TF09 Baker’s Shoppe class provided some catering for the opening night. It is always wonderful to have the opportunity to see some of the work from our talented students. Congratulations to the Year 12s for the way they conducted themselves and cleaned the school after their ‘end of school celebrations’ last week. We wish them luck with their exams, which started this week.

HOMEWORK Homework is set on a consistent basis. Students are required to hand in homework on the due date. Not submitting homework by the due date can result in marks being deducted, and in the worst-case scenario, a fail mark given on the end of semester report. ‘Homework Club’ is held each lunchtime, giving all students an environment to complete their set, overdue task(s). It is a student’s responsibility to collect homework if they have been absent. Creating a regular home study pattern will greatly benefit all students entering into the senior years of schooling. NB: Students may receive other homework as necessary for other subjects.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Dear families and students,

Wednesday saw the beginning of the Year 12 exams for most students with English being the first exam. In what can be a stressful time, the Year 12s seem to be taking it in their stride. Psychology was yesterday and Further Maths and Biology are on today. It has been great to see so many of the Year 12 students coming in for extra assistance during their designated study times. Keep up the positive attitude guys, and keep doing your best. That is all anyone can ask of you and all you can ask of yourself.

Our school has a career education program to help your child make career decisions. But it's also a good idea to talk to them about what they want to do. Research shows that children look to their parents first when they want career advice. A career includes all the roles you undertake throughout your life, including education, training, paid and unpaid work, family, volunteer work, leisure activities and more. The concept of a job for life is no longer a reality. Young people now are likely to experience five to eight major career changes in their life. They will have more fluid ways of working, like casual, contract and part-time work options. Making the best career choices involves knowing what you like (your interests), knowing what you are good at (your skills and abilities), knowing what is important to you (your values), understanding the world of work and knowing about your available options and what jobs are out there, learning how to make informed decisions about your possible options, and deciding and setting about achieving your objectives.

Attendance Matters: It’s never too late to improve attendance. Going to school more often makes a huge difference to educational outcomes.

Everyday counts and we’re here to help. If you’re having any attendance issues with your child, please contact the relevant Year Level Co-ordinator or myself, so that we can work together to get your child to school every day.

HPV: This coming Tuesday we have a non-compulsory working bee starting at 10am. We then have our (hopefully) final working bee on Wednesday 13th Nov form 5pm. It’s time to make sure our trikes are up to race specifications, and now with a little under three weeks to go until the event, we are certainly in need of getting ‘race ready’. Thank you to all of our current sponsors – Mt Beauty & District Community Bendigo Bank, Foodworks, Falls Creek Coaches, Slide Star, Mount Beauty Towing, Rotary Club of Mount Beauty, Team Mount Beauty, The Angelini Family, Upper Kiewa Valley Lions Club, Tawonga South Butchery, Rocky Valley Sports, Mt Beauty Bakery, Mt Beauty Hardware & Drapery, Mount Beauty Medical Centre, and AGL.

Our Values: ASPIRATION; CONFIDENCE; RESPECT – For the next two weeks we will focus on Respect ‘Out in the Community and Assemblies’. Positive behaviours that can show these values include treating everyone fairly, being humble in victory and gracious in defeat, listening attentively to others, and always being considerate of others. If you see any examples of our wonderful students showing these behaviours whilst out and about, please don’t hesitate to let us know so that we can recognise and acknowledge their efforts. Students receive ‘Positive Behaviour Tokens’ for exhibiting these types of behaviours and can then access the ‘Values Cabinet’ to claim a reward for showing these positive behaviours.

Thank you, Ross Wilson

OUTDOOR EDUCATION CAMP OUTDOOR EDUCATION MOUNTAIN BIKE CAMP Last week, the 2019 Outdoor Education class prepared and left for their three-day camp at Mountain Creek. After the celebration morning that the Year 12 students hosted had concluded, we had prepared our bikes, our water supplies, food and our packs and loaded them onto the bus. We then had the all clear to leave school and began our bike ridden journey towards mountain creek. On the journey, we went into Freda’s lane as a shortcut. After going through some horrid smelling mud and with some dirty shoes and bikes, we popped out on the final stretch towards camp. After feeling like we had climbed hills endlessly, we made it to camp. Everyone had craved their tasty lunches and couldn’t wait any longer to consume their food. Camp had been set up and an afternoon walk had been planned along a short loop. After a lot of mucking about and more eating, it was time to hit the sleeping bags and go to sleep. The next morning, after breakfast and hot beverages, we put the bikes on the trailer and hit the road for a day full of shuttles. We started off doing two runs down a four wheel drive track with a creek crossing down Simmonds Creek Rd. Once we loaded the trailer to leave Simmonds creek, we headed towards Big Hill for survey track from Cranky Charlie corner. We made our way to the caravan park by the river for lunch and a dip. Greeny made the great decision to do an amazing descent from Camp Creek / Eskdale Spur almost halfway up Bogong. We lost one of Zoe’s wheels along the way – lucky we had a spare bike. However, it wasn’t all fun or sunshine or lollipops. There were punctures and crashes through puddles and creek crossings and a close call with falling trees. High speeds were reached and pile ups took place, however, we did make it back to camp in time for dinner and bed, all in one piece. On the third and final day, we woke up to the pitter patter of raindrops on the tents and tarps. An early start called for an early pack up. However, the rain had broken away for some midday activities including a blind partner walk through a small loop of bush and a few rounds of sardines. After the activities concluded, we put our wet weather gear on and saddled up for a wet, wild and fast ride home. Lots of panting and pedalling later, we arrived at school, where the major clean up began. After the packing up outside was over and done with, a few congratulations went around and happiness was shared. Our journey was now over with everyone wanting more. The next camp is waiting and we’re all eager for it to commence. Kobe Bell (on behalf of the middle school outdoor ed class)

SCHOOL FOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP Expressions of Interest for 2020 School For Student Leadership (SFSL) for current Year 8 students. Sorry for the late notice; this year, we weren’t allocated spots at SFSL. We put our name on the wait list and were informed yesterday that a school had withdrawn, allowing us to send a team of 3 boys and 3 girls to the Snowy River campus at Marlo, in Term 1. Information letters and application forms were given out in Home Groups this morning to Year 8 students. An email will also be sent to all Year 8 Students and families and students must return their application form by next Friday, 8th November. Students will be shortlisted from this application and invited to attend the information evening, being held at school on Wednesday 13th November, 6pm. Interviews will take place after then, to determine the 6 students who will represent us in 2020. We can confirm that the price will be reduced from this year’s price, being $935 for the shorter 8 week term. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Hannah Little or Simone Roy at the College.
