Jaime Casap: Global Education Evangelist at Google, Inc. Jaime evangelizes the power and potential of the web, technology, and Google tools in education. He helps educational organizations across the world find ways to utilize these tools in support of new learning

models. Jaime Casap was named one of Tech & Learn-ing’s Top 10 Most Influential in Education, and a

SXSWedu (South by Southwest) Distinguished Speaker.

Carl Hayden Robotics Speakers: Fredi Lajvardi and Students from the documentary, Underwater Dreams,

that chronicles the Carl Hayden Robotics team’s improb-able win over MIT and other colleges 10 years ago,

and the STEM legacy it inspired at the school. This inter-nationally-renowned robotics team sent scores of stu-dents to universities to study science, technology and engineering, and empowered others to advocate for

the DREAM Act.

Our Students: Sueños Para El Futuro

The B.E.E.S. Leadership Institute for aspir-ing and current principals launched on October 3, 2014!. We had a total of twen-ty-eight enthusiastic participants who are being provided excellent professional de-velopment in addition to a mentoring pro-gram through our AHSAA experienced members. We have research-based curric-ulum, program, and presenters for all ten sessions. Our leaders will be learning about ‘quality schools’ and how to create and maintain them.

The 7th Annual Alejandro Perez Memorial Golf Tournament was held on Saturday, September 21, 2014 at Legend of Arrowhead. This year proved to be a huge success for all.

The proceeds from the Alejandro Perez Memorial are used to fund scholarships for educators that are pursuing their Masters and Doctoral degrees in Education Leadership who are committed to serv-ing communities with high

numbers of Title I , ELL and Latino Students.

Congratulations to Dr. Edna Aragon-Morris! She is the new superintendent of Ba-boquivari Unified SD in Sells, AZ. BUSD is a public school district located on the Tohono O’odham Indian Reservation. Dr. Aragon-Morris served as school principal prior to accepting the position of superintendent. Her educational work began at Casa Grande Union HSD, where she taught Early Childhood Education, and quick-ly held administrative roles in Career and Technical Education, Grants, Profession-al Development, Evaluation, Curriculum/Instruction and principal of both an alterna-tive and a comprehensive high school of over 3300 students. Her career began in Mammoth-San Manuel Unified SD teaching middle school Life Skills classes. She is a English Language Learner. She began speaking English at the age of 7. She speaks, reads, and writes Spanish fluently. Her doctoral work concentrated on cre-ating a highly effective system/process for creating a culture of collaboration, con-sistency, and courageous conversation in the use of common formative assess-ments.

She will complete her 28th year in education and loves each day she goes to work. “I wake up each morning with a renewed hope that our children will become highly effective problem solvers!” She will often refer to her three daughters, amazing seven grandchildren, and husband of nearly 25 years to make her point about the importance of education and how an impactful education will create a world that we can all be proud of.

Lily Matos DeBlieux was born in New York City where she attended elemen-tary school and two years of high school. In 1973, the family moved to Isa-bela, Puerto Rico where she completed high school and college. Her profes-sional preparation includes degrees in Elementary Education (BA), Educa-tional Leadership and Supervision (MA and PhD), all from the University of Southern Mississippi. She also obtained a Business Administration (BA) de-gree from the University of Puerto Rico. Her past experiences include being a teacher, elementary principal, middle school dean, director of religious edu-cation at a military base, assistant superintendent, adjunct professor, busi-ness owner, and community volunteer. Lily owned a technology company for six years before returning to her true calling: education.

Dr. DeBlieux was appointed as Superintendent of the Pendergast Elementary School District in May 2014. Pendergast District is in the West Valley serving 13 schools and approximately 10,000 students in Avondale, Glendale and Phoenix. Lily’s leadership motto is, “All decisions will be made in the best in-terests of students.”

In 2015, the Initiative will celebrate its 25th anniversary. First created to ad-dress the alarming high school dropout rate for Latinos – a demoralizing 32 percent compared with the national rate of 12 percent – it has since expand-ed its focus to address cradle-to-career educational issues impacting the Hispanic community at large.
