We have shared wonderful news, as well as unfortunate sorrow, and we know we have many blessings for which we should be thankful and possibilities that await us as we approach the months to come. The year ahead brings with it new opportunities to help fellow neighbors in our community and to support the larger community that surrounds us. Keep an eye on this newsletter as we bring you notice of familiar events and important news, and let us know if you have an idea for something new and exciting we can plan together. As always, give us a call, or stop by during office hours, to discuss activities that might benefit all residents of our community. We wish you a safe, healthy and happy new year! All of the staff at Belmont Village would like to thank all of the residents, families and others who donated to the Holiday Fund! It made all of the staff at Belmont Village feel very special and appreciated for all their hard work they do throughout the year. We take pride in providing excellent care to our residents and will continue to do so as we move into 2013! Everyone at Belmont would like to welcome our Activity Program Coordinator, Laurie Evans, back to Belmont Village. She was greatly missed these last few months, and we want to wish her a healthy new year.

Give Your Brain a BoostStuck in the dreary doldrums of

winter? Clear out the cobwebscollecting in your mind byfocusing your attention on somebrain-boosting grub. Start yourday with whole-grain cereal and aglass of O.J.—both are loadedwith folic acid, which aidsmemory function and keepsneurons firing fast. Snack on somepeanuts; they contain choline, which is known to enhancemental energy. Fruits andveggies—especially berries, grapes, apples, plums, broccoli andspinach—help protect againstmemory loss. And don’t forget thefish oil, which is also good foryour brain. Get the essentialomega-3s from fish such assalmon, sardines and herring, ortake a fish-oil supplement to keepyou thinking clearly.

Create a Story:Fill-in-the-Blank

Ask friends to provide nouns (n.),verbs (v.), adjectives (adj.) andadverbs (adv.) to fill in the blanksbelow. Then read the story out loudfor an outlandishly funny tale.

Another new year has arrived. Ihave resolved to (v.)_____. Ohdear. Why did I (v.)_____ that? Then I look in the refrigerator andsee (n.)_____, (n.)_____ and(n.)_____. I (v.)_____. Whycouldn’t I instead have resolved to(v.)_____? I (adv.)_____ take adeep (n.)_____. “It’s OK. I can getthrough this,” I (v.)_____ tomyself. Why does (n.)_____ haveto taste so (adj.)_____? Then Ithink of the (adj.)_____ trip to the(n.)_____ I’ve planned and the(adj.)_____ swimsuit I want to(v.)_____. So I decide to eat(n.)_____ and (n.)_____ fordinner tonight. Go figure!

Cures for Cabin FeverSick of being cooped up

indoors? Cabin fever may not be amedical condition, but it can dragyou down. Spring will arrive soon.In the meantime, here are someremedies to help you hang onuntil Old Man Winter hitsthe road:

Tune into summer. Listen tomusic that sets your mind onwarmer weather. Caribbean tuneswill transport you to a sandybeach, and any song with “hot” or“summer” in the title will refreshyour memory of lazy, hazy days.

Have an indoor picnic. Feast on aspread of summertime favorites:hot dogs, potato salad, bakedbeans, lemonade and ice cream. You won’t have to worry aboutfood spoiling or melting inthe sun.

Take a hike. Lack of sunlight cancontribute to seasonal depression.Bundle up and head to the parkfor a nature walk. If venturingoutdoors is out of the question, consider brightening your moodwith a full-spectrum lamp thatmimics sunlight.

Make a clean sweep. It’s stillwinter, but why not use the timeindoors to get a head start onspring cleaning? Moving aroundwill warm you up, and a tidierhome will lift your spirits. Withchores completed, when springarrives you’ll be free to revel in theseason’s glory.

Secrets for Soothing aSore Throat

A sore throat is a commonmalady in the winter. “TheFarmer’s Almanac” offers somesimple remedies that should helpease your discomfort:

Suck on a zinc lozenge. Somestudies say zinc helps ease sorethroats and other cold symptoms.

Gargle with warm salt water.Place 1 t. salt in a glass of warmwater. Gargle several times.

Cuddle a compress. Rest a warmcompress on your throat.

Brew some tea. Not just any tea, though. Try one of these options.

• Chamomile tea: Add 1–2 t.dried chamomile blossomsto a pint of boiling water;steep and drink a cup everyfew hours.

• Pomegranate tea: Brew severalof the fruit’s rinds and thendrink up. The pomegranatecontains astringents that willhelp ease your discomfort.

Sip some honey. Mix 1/4 c.honey with 1/4 c. apple cidervinegar. Take 1 T. every four hoursor as needed throughout the day.
