A. building possessed a lobby, dark, neglected and unprepossessing', the organization havingbeen disbanded at the t ime. But on onebrigh t, sunny day Mrs. Wood not icedthat on either side of the fireplace therewere two bookcases.' Permission to usethis lobby was obtained and the librarymoved in on Jun e 17, 1921, and stayedthere three years . The response of thepubl ic was immedi at e. The volumesgr ew in number t o 3000 and the circu ,lation increased to 12,000.Depar tments we re added. Ou October H, 1921, the juvenile departmentwas opened with d istr ibut ion of 2:.books to chi ld ren. These have alwaysbeen given out f ree. Ear ly in 1!122 areference department was started . Andthe same year the "summer privi lege"was inaugurated, when all books in theren tal col lect ion which had been publi shed b efor e a cer ta in d at e were dis t ribu ted free. On January I, 192:l, thepolicy was established of removing permanently from the rental collection allbooks published more than two yearspreviously.There were some drawback s t o t helobby. Books were available to all peoplen a s s i n ~ t hrough to the meeting hallbeyond, whether or not t he re was a librarian in attendance. But books thatdisappeared usually came back.
