AT THE VERNON SENIOR CENTER
OUT & ABOUT
The Senior Center has certainly been bustling with activities since its
opening in April!
In May, the Senior Center hosted two sold out events.
The seniors were treated to: The Great American Songbook, an evening
concert performed by a very talented musical group, led by Cara
Gay. This musical group gathered from all over the state to
perform at the Senior Center.
The ladies enjoyed a wonderful afternoon at the Ladies Tea, which
featured: a variety of finger sandwiches, teas, and desserts, followed
by a performance by Kandie Carle, The Victorian Lady.
As we spring into summer, be sure to join us for more upcoming
and exciting events and programs!

MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION
CHECK-IN SYSTEM: MySeniorCenter
MySeniorCenter is specifically designed to help the staff manage the various sign-ups and sign-ins, and improve the way we report our services. The new system is extremely easy to use. Here’s how it works:
1. All members will receive a scan card (The scan card is the same as your membership card. The card does not contain any personal information. It will allow the system to recognize you.) 2. Instead of signing into our sign-in sheets, you’ll swipe your card at the scanner. 3. Press the touchscreen to select the programs you’ll be participating in that day. 4. Press FINISH.
***If you have signed up for a program at the Vernon Senior Center, you will receive an
automated reminder call from “MySeniorCenter” from Somerville, MA (617) 440-3507***

Hibernation is Over
Depression in older adults is real. There may be many factors that contribute to depression, but right now
we are going to talk about social isolation. Winter is a very easy time to hibernate in your home and avoid
any social obligations, thus shutting yourself off from the world. The more one isolates themselves, the
more likely they are to become depressed. Now that spring has arrived, let's discuss some tools that may help you
get back out.
The first tool that I teach in my Older Adult Program, is called 'opposite action' (when you act opposite to
how you feel). For example, when you are feeling depressed, your first instinct when you wake up may be
to pull the covers over your head and stay in bed. If you were to use ‘opposite action’, you would get up and
take a shower. It is a choice you will need to make and at times, may be very difficult to do. The more you
'act opposite', the easier it will become and the less depressed you may feel.
Another tool to combat social isolation is scheduling and planning; planning out your week day by day. Even
if it’s going to get a cup of coffee at your local coffee shop, getting out can be beneficial to your mental
health. With many of my older adults, I help plan their week out. For some this means going to the Senior
Center one day, grocery shopping another day and maybe going to the park. Some other activities include
going to the library or out to meet friends for lunch. The better you have days planned out, the more it will
give you something to look forward to.
If you feel that you are suffering from depression please seek out mental health services as soon as
possible. We provide same day psych evaluations at Manchester Hospital Open Access, Monday through
Friday starting at 8 am, at 150 North Main Street, Manchester.
