Two potential knock out blows were landed in the shape of Jackson and the professional indemnity renewals. Some firms have closed, departments have gone but then again others are expanding and putting some really exciting deals together that are going to guarantee their businesses short and medium term futures. 2014 will see further consolidation and expansion by the larger claimant operations, who will find a match in the regions’ established defendant firms in their demand for technically strong, target driven CILEx fee earners. Salaries in RTA have been hit most, industrial disease and clinical negligence remains competitive. Debt recovery A steady 2013 with departments operating at their leanest yet over the period of the recession. Salaries have not moved much since 2012 but with commercial activity picking up on the back of economic growth, 2014 could see head counts rising and salaries starting to nudge up for experienced litigators. The Jackson reforms have also impacted on debt recovery and forced many in the arena to revisit their business models. Innovative debt recovery fee earners, particularly those CILEx members with business cases or followings, will remain in high demand in private practice. Property The demand for CILEx property lawyers is outstripping supply. Five years ago property lawyers were the first to get hit and within months the recession had created a black hole in most law firms’ residential and commercial conveyancing departments. In our recent end of year survey 48% of property fee earners stated their salary was below market rate and 48% said it was about right. For some time now property lawyers have been reluctant to move jobs with job security being the main motivation behind that. 2014 will see residential and commercial conveyancers grow in confidence and be more willing to roll the dice when it comes to moving their careers forward and consequently their salaries upwards. NORTH Jonathan Nolan of Douglas Scott Legal Recruitment shares an overview of 2013 and his predictions for 2014 The last six months of 2013 were indicative of a sector coming out of recession, however the demand for talent returned as the general economic outlook for 2014 became brighter. Perhaps the most significant was the requirement that claimants now need to pay fees to take their employer to tribunal. From April this year employees will be required to refer their claim to ACAS where conciliation will be offered. If that doesn’t work then they will be free to litigate. Claimant employment law opportunities are almost non-existent, conversely there is still plenty of demand for lawyers who specialise in acting for employers. Salaries for CILEx members in consultancies have remained steady and whilst remuneration in the top 100 UK law firms has nudged up, employment law could be described as volatile. Private client follows the fortunes of property to an extent, a house sale and/or purchase will usually provide an opportunity to cross sell services. Private client has always been fertile territory for Chartered Legal Executives, entry level students who can demonstrate an aptitude for drafting can go on to earn big money getting involved with challenging and rewarding work centered around wealth protection services such as tax planning and trusts. High flyers are able to combine technical ability with soft skills and possess an eye for a business opportunity. Family 2013 was not a good year for CILEx members who specialise in family law. Public funded work was decimated by LASPO resulting in a lot of redundancies and departmental closures. Privately funded family work was steady in 2013 and may benefit from the return of the property market. Salaries are not expected to rise in 2014 though, however like every other practice area, there will always be a demand for specialists who have built up a good name for themselves and who can present a solid business case to hire.
